Since the gold plates are not available for examination, the specimen of characters that Joseph Smith produced is the closest we will ever come to testing Joseph Smith's claim of having translated the Book of Mormon from anciently engraved gold plates. Are these characters traceable to any ancient language? Or are they the product of Joseph Smith's imagination?
This video is part two of a three-part examination of the Book of Mormon characters.

To my untrained eye, the characters in the sources Vogel showed in the video look very similar to the 'Caracters' that were supposedly the ones Joseph Smith sent with Martin Harris. It would make sense that, if Smith was copying from these sources, he would alter them just enough to make them dissimilar to anything else. This would naturally render them indecipherable. He did something similar with the 'Facsimiles' in the Book of Abraham where he filled in part of the rim of the Hypocephalus by copying and slightly altering other markings found on it. (See Facsimile 2 in the Book of Abraham). Modern day Egyptologists are able to see that his attempt was an obvious fraud.

deskjockie49 Also I thought we covered the Book of Abraham subject! You're all NO LONGER going around BLABBING that''Joseph Smith didn't translate the Egyptian the way that the Egyptologists say that it's supposed to be translated like!'' As you have came to realize that the Egyptian papyri WAS NOT ever supposed to be translated the way that the Egyptologists say that it's supposed to be translated like! Now bam you go to something else! p.s. why don't you post that info supporting where you said ''he filled in the part of the rim of the Hypocephalus by copying and slightly altering other markings found on it. (See Facsimile 2 in the Book of Abraham). Modern day Egyptologists are able to see that his attempt was an obvious fraud.'' Why don't you post that like I say!
@deskjockie4948

@116220591188058722167 No, Richard, I have NOT come to realize that "the Egyptian papyri WAS NOT ever supposed to be translated the way that the Egyptologists say that it's supposed to be translated like!" On the contrary, for decades, the Mormon church claimed that Joseph Smith actually translated the Egyptian papyri. Joseph Smith himself said that he "was continually engaged in translating an alphabet to the Book of Abraham, and arranging a grammar of the Egyptian language as practiced by the ancients." ( History of the Church 2:238, July 1835 ) It was only AFTER the Egyptian language was deciphered and the ability to read the 'translations' of Joseph Smith were found to be ridiculous gibberish that the Mormon church had to come up with the new idea that it was a 'spiritual' translation. "..the Egyptian language as practiced by the ancients"! Did the Egyptians practice a 'spiritual" language? No, I don't think so. As to my statement that Joseph Smith 'filled in the missing part of the rim of the Hypocephalus, check out what your own "Egyptian scholar", Michael Rhodes, had to say about it: "As stated by LDS Egyptologist Michael D. Rhodes: "A careful examination of Facsimile No. 2 shows that there is a difference between most of the hieroglyphic signs and the signs on the right third of the figure on the outer edge as well as the outer portions of the sections numbered 12-15. These signs are hieratic, not hieroglyphic, and are inverted, or upside down, to the rest of the text. In fact, they are a fairly accurate copy of lines 2, 3, and 4 of the Joseph Smith Papyrus XI, which contains a portion of the Book of Breathings. Especially clear is the word snsn, in section 14, and part of the name of the mother of the owner of the papyrus, (tay-)uby.t, repeated twice on the outer edge. An ink drawing of the hypocephalus in the Church Historian's office shows these same areas as being blank. It is likely that these portions were destroyed on the original hypocephalus and someone (the engraver, one of Joseph Smith's associates, or Joseph himself) copied the lines from the Book of Breathings papyrus for aesthetic purposes. ( Rhodes, Michael D.. "The Joseph Smith Hypocephalus . . . Twenty Years Later" (PDF). Retrieved 15 March 2014) If you do your homework, you can easily find renderings of the original and doctored hypocephalus on the internet.

Richard Holmes I did. He 'attempted' to translate the Egyptian language, and failed laughably. “the remainder of this month, I (JS) was continually engaged in translating an alphabet to the Book of Abraham, and arranging a grammar of the Egyptian language as practiced by the ancients." (History of the Church 2:238, July 1835) A 'grammar of the Egyptian language as practiced by the ancients" doesn't sound like a 'spiritual' translation to me.

I thought I had the truth and that God would help me bring people to him, but I was generally pretty disappointed in God's ability to perform. I also acquired a certain cynicism towards the General Authorities during my mission. Alma 32:27-30 basically encourages people to pretend to believe, as a way of increasing their faith; it eventually occurred to me that even the General Authorities might be winging it. To Vogel and any other LDS viewers: I thought that it was known which chapters in the Book of Mormon these characters were copied from. I heard this somewhere but can't remember where. If there is such a quote, it would be a reasonble task to use computers to see if there is any correlation between the Whitmer document caractors and the ENglish text in the BOM. If an LDS source provides the BOM citation, I am sure Vogel would be willing to take up the challenge.

So let me get this straight... -The language of Lehi, a Hebrew prophet who had lived in Jerusalem all his life, was Egyptian. -It was important to get the plates of brass to preserve the commandments and the "LANGUAGE of our fathers" (1 Nephi 3:19). Now this was Nephi talking, so if the language of his father is Egyptian, it follows that the plates containing the writings of the prophets and Lehi's genealogy was Egyptian. -Preserving the Egyptian language was so important, that Nephi, who had never killed anyone, cuts Laban's head off. -But as soon as Nephi starts writing his own plates, he "reforms" Egyptian into something completely unrecognizable (as shown in this video) as do all his successors. Even though often times the book is supposed to be quoting directly from the brass plates. -The original plates keep being handed down from generation to generation for 1000 years as something sacred, but the preservation of the original language never happens. -The other reason to get the plates, to prevent their people from "dwindling in unbelief". Also fails. How could anybody today believe this book is for real? ... Oh, wait I forgot, they prayed to god and they had a warm, fuzzy feeling, which is the best, most reliable and irrefutable proof that the Tower of Babel is history rather than a fable, and this book wasn't a crude fabrication by a snake oil salesman.
@robertbeadles8342

Lehi said they where of the tribe of Joseph, Joseph’s sons where Egyptians and where taught in Egypt, and they taught their families in Egypt. It had been >100 years from their departure from Egypt. Much like English we have writings yet if you go back a few hundred even with writing our own has changed to. Note the changed Egyptian note was made by Moroni 1,000 years later.

@@robertbeadles8342 Biblical Historians mostly agree that the Exodus was a mythical event and patriarchs such as Abraham, Israel, Joseph and Moses are fictional characters. There's no chronology for the exodus and those who believe in it place it somewhere between 1400 BC and 1200 BC. So, if true, you're correct in saying a long time had passed, up to 800 years, But in all that time there where many interactions between Judah and Egypt which aren't mentioned in the Bible or the Book of Mormon, because they expose the embarrassing history of the Jews. Judah was conspiring with the Assyrian Empire, which included Egypt and Babylon, to become a territory, while selling out the Northern Kingdom of Israel and fellow "chosen people" for conquest and destruction. Their plot worked and Israel was destroyed while Judah prospered by controlling the olive oil production and market in the region. Egypt and Judah for years around the time of 1st Nephi were practically part of the same empire, so they must've had plenty of interaction, commerce and travel, and used the Egyptian language which was common at the time. Eventually all this came back to bite them in the rear, and you didn't need to be a prophet to know trouble was coming. When Assyria fell, Egypt and Babylon rushed to gain power over the region, conquering Judah and Jerusalem with it. During the Persian Period, following the Babylonian captivity many books of the Bible were written, including hindsight "prophecies" of the destruction of Jerusalem. Also, the Pentateuch was consolidated in writing from legends and traditions, to give the Jews an identity and unique "history" as the chosen people of God, giving them the moral authority to claim having exterminated the Canaanites, when in reality they themselves were just self-hating Canaanites. Notice that in the Exodus it is claimed that at every city Moses (told so by God) order all men, women, children and even animals completely destroyed. There's a reason for that: It was a political claim to replace the Canaanites as the occupants and inheritors of the land, claiming they didn't exist anymore. Tragically, in the XX century the Jews suffered the Holocaust where millions were killed, but this time for real, not just as part of a fictional narrative. In 1831-1835 Josiah Priest published "American Antiquities and Discoveries in the West. 1835 is 5th edition and says "22,000 copies have been published within 30months..." So, more than 50,000 copies seems reasonable. Around pg 122 are examples of so called letters of Phoenicians and Americans. copied by Dr Adam Clarke. Elsewhere, Quoting RF Rafinesque: "The similarities between the African and American Letters used....beyond a doubt ...were also known in the Americas..." A comparison is provided. All nonsense. Then Egyptian and other comparisons are made. Illustrations provided. But interestingly it says The Atlantic antiquities are more obscure than the Egyptian. "No CHAMPOLLION had raised their veil". So, Champ' was known. There are other references to Champ'. It's often claimed Champollion was not known in the USA. And that Joe did his translation at such a time. If Joe had spent $1 on just one edition of Priest's book he could have saved himself a lot of trouble. I bought 4. For $30-100. Poor Joe.

Curious, that 30 of those characters are essentially identical to 30 such characters found on the Rosetta Stone, which was not available to Joseph Smith. Champollon had not published his analysis of Egyptian from the Rosetta Stone in English, and Joseph Smith did not have a library in backwoods New York that would have had anything remotely relevant. Moreover, Barry Fell, a Harvard linguist and a non-mormon, declared that the language resembled "reformed Egyptian".

'Reformed Egyptian' should appear on thousands of artifacts, pottery, plates,coins, buildings, if it was used by them. Nothing has been found, from the great civilization that flourished for centuries,( as Joseph Smith claimed). While his primary professional research included starfish and sea urchins, Fell is best known for his controversial work in New World epigraphy, arguing that various inscriptions in the Americas are best explained by extensive pre-Columbian contact with Old World civilizations. If any of this bogus reporting were actually true, it does nothing to explain the appearance of the Book of Mormon itself. Linguists far more schooled than Dan Vogel have considered not only this small representation of the characters from the Book of Mormon as translated by Joseph Smith, but have also considered the Book of Mormon by its actual translation as relating to languages akin to what the BofM refers to as "reformed Egyptian." The cognates between many of such languages is staggering and more than sufficient to prove that either Joseph Smith was a fraud of such brilliance that the likes of him have never been seen anywhere else, especially considering his utter lack of any higher-order education, or the BofM came about exactly as he said it did. And if Joseph Smith was nothing more than a charismatic charlatan, and the BofM so obvious a fairy tale, then people would be making up such fairytales right and left. But in point of fact, the BofM is a highly complex, lengthy, and utterly consistent record that even the best of writers would find impossible to duplicate. More to the point, all of the accusations leveled against the BofM are EXACTLY the same accusations atheists level against the Bible. The Bible is simply a composition of stories, written over the space of better than a thousand years, with self-fulfilling passages designed to fool the gullible, with a questionable historicity, made-up dates, names, situations, people, you name it. The Bible itself states nowhere in its pages that it is the last of all revelations to come from God, that it contains everything anyone needs to find salvation, nor does it indicate which passages should be taken literally or be taken figuratively. What did the meridian Saints use then to "know" that Jesus was the Christ if there was no "Bible" and the OT was only meant for the Jewish people?! To argue that the Bible is true because you believe it is from God is just plain irrational thinking. God doesn't need the Bible to communicate to anyone, but as men are moved upon by the Holy Ghost their recorded words become scripture, and it is that same Holy Ghost which then bears witness to men on earth that the Bible is true. The same is true with Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon!

@danvogel6802 Год назад
No one has deciphered these so-called “Reformed Egyptian” characters. Parallels between the characters and Egyptian have no more authority than similarities to English. Besides, I have shown from internal evidence that the characters appear to be artificial and invented. No doubt some people have made up stories to explain the Book of Mormon-like the Spalding theory-but that doesn’t prove the Book of Mormon is an actual translated history. The Book of Mormon is as complex as any text, but it is simple where it should be more complex and complex where it should be simple. It is not without contradiction, and there are many stories that don’t make sense. I’m not sure anyone would want to duplicate the Book of Mormon, but there are many things in history that are unrepeatable. Comparing the Book of Mormon to works of literature isn’t appropriate. The Book of Mormon isn’t great literature, which requires a different process and should be compared to other revelatory or automatic texts, though the Book of Mormon wasn’t necessarily produced as automatically as it seems. Your last point is a logical fallacy known as ad hominem circumstantial. Your appeal to Bible believers to reject criticisms of the Book of Mormon based on similarity to the arguments of skeptics and atheists against the Bible has nothing to do with the validity of the evidence against the Book of Mormon. Learn this fallacy and don’t repeat it. Ironically, you tell Bible-believers they don’t need the Bible only the Spirit, and that Spirit will tell them they need the Book of Mormon.

He was trying to test a hypothesis that if the BOM characters are fakes, perhaps one can find a source from which Joseph Smith got ideas for making the fabrication. The smoking gun could have been a book that has several alphabet Examples, and Vogel finding a mapping between the characters in the Whitmer document to all the character displayed in that book. What Vogel states at the end is: he and others who looked very hard, could not find any such source. Therefore, either the characters are from a completely unknown language that evolved in such a way over 1000s of years that it has no similarity to any other ancient alphabets OR Joseph Smith was a very clever fellow and created characters that just happened to be varied enough that through coincidence, have no obvious source. So, even using Ockham's razor to choose between the 2 choices above (meaning which is the simpler possibility), it is hard to choose between the 2. So the characters are either real in absence of finding something they could be copied from, OR Joseph was a super super genius OR Joseph was extremely lucky in creating fake characters (like 1 out of 999 Trillion) that defied close examination. I think Vogel should have explored the deformed English concept further, it was the best evidence of fabricated characters.

Many of the characters were 'deformed occult'. That is, they bore resemblance to occult figures and glyphs. A fervid imagination could create almost anything and con the simple into belief.. It isn't the fraud, it's the abuse of doubters that makes all these details intolerably important. Oh, yeah. Do any of you believe a long dead man will judge you? That GAWD will let a criminal, liar and adulterer admit or deny you eternal life? That's just Law.0. Old Law. New con. Can't put any simpler.

Andy P I agree the lack of proof does not prove something decisively. Concerning the Book of Mormon though we have proof that Joseph Smith is a liar, which one can conclude from scripture that that makes him not a prophet, which therefore makes the entirety of the book of Mormon heresy and charlatan. It's so obvious to see from the Kinderhook tablets and the Book of Abraham and the story of Joseph Smith's Revelations and the events around his death that he is indeed a con man. He was also a convicted fraud.

Andy P yeah, you and every other super devoted cult member of any cult or sect anywhere in the world. You’re taught to look for a certain feeling, and then you’re put in situations every week that trigger certain responses in your body chemistry. People have studied this and found that the same feelings are felt in a ton of various situations, including listening to music that the person likes. It’s literally just a release of endorphins that give you these feelings of ‘angelic teachings’. I guess this ‘WEEK’ human just explained your situation. Ps. I think you mean to say, ‘weak’ a WEEK is Sunday through Saturday. 👍🏻 Also look up simple church history, you will learn pretty quick that the current church is not like the church in the mid 1800s. And you will also find that the church has vastly whitewashed their history and covered up so many of the ugly things they used to do and teach.

Lucy Harris, was indeed skeptical of Joseph Smith and his "golden plates" story, and steadfastly refused to give or loan any needed funds whatsoever. Only if she was allowed to see the plates for herself. That was her final discission... She went to bed stubborn and angry. The following morning she capitulated and even insisted on donating money ($28.) She also told a story of an angelic visitation in which she was chastised and shown the plates. There were at least three other women who saw the plates (or the outline of the plates under a cloth.) These are not included in the eleven "official" eye witnesses. Most would leave the Church for one reason or another. None would ever retract any of their initial claims. Judge the Book of Mormon on it's content and nothing else. There are no experts today, who are able to prove or disprove a thing... BTW, One of the most difficult languages to understand and read today, is "15th Century, Middle English." Most writing within the Book of Mormon, predates the birth of Christ, and then only 385 years thereafter.

In my completely uninformed opinion, this looks exactly as shoddy as we might expect from someone who misspells "Caractors". And I believe that the story that it's a "copy" is a rather pathetic and unsuccessful attempt to muddy the waters (-as if whoever copied it would have made any mistakes). If I had to guess, I'd guess Joseph wrote it himself. And that it was not intended for anything other than to personally brainstorm ideas for a made up language. It was probably never intended to be seen by anyone, or even kept. But I'd guess that someone did find it, and went public with it as a subtle way to expose Joseph as a fraud. Unable to suppress it, perhaps after decades, the Church could only try to glorify it, and mistify it, and just hope that no followers ever think too hard about it.

To my recollection, Vogel did not say the Book of Mormon is not true. He is saying that the lack of evidence of finding an ancient alphabet that is similar enough to the BOM characters is to be expected. He implies with his tone of voice that he believes this is evidence enough to prove that Joseph Smith made the characters up. TO me, it is evidence that the language of the Nephites evolved so much over 1000 years of isolation that it became unique, so there would be no match to any ancient alphabets used in the Old World. TO me, the lack of evidence is a strong indication that the BOM is real.

Till Ayala, yes, I have read the Book of Mormon. Yes, I prayed about it. I come from pioneer stock. I was a Mormon for 25+ years. I was a missionary at one point. Then I changed my mind. How about you? Are you a convert to Mormonism? Have you ever read the entire Bible, from the first page of Genesis to the last page of Revelation? The problem with the witness of the spirit is that it is not very good at sorting out true ideas from false ideas. It is not as truth-sensitive as we might want. Suppose 100 people decide to read the Book of Mormon, because they really want to know if it is true. 98 of them feel nothing, or have some sort of experience that suggests to them that the Book of Mormon is false. Maybe they have a dream about their dead mother telling them that the Book of Mormon is false and their soul is at risk. Or maybe they just feel bored or disgusted when they read the Book of Mormon. These 98 people shrug and move on. The other two people read the Book of Mormon and have some sort of experience that they interpret as telling them that the Book of Mormon is true. Maybe they have a dream where their dead mother tells them that the Book of Mormon is true. Or maybe they just feel really good and excited when they read the Book of Mormon. These two people join the LDS church and talk about their experience with the Book of Mormon for the rest of their lives. People like these two people are all the LDS church needs to keep going. But that doesn't explain what happened with the other 98 people. If we did the same experiment with 100 people reading the Quran or 100 people reading the writings of Ellen White, we would get a similar result. Most people would feel nothing, have a negative experience, or get a feeling that these books are false. But a few would have a good experience or get a really good feeling, and end up becoming Muslims or Seventh-Day Adventists. How is your good feeling different from the good feelings that Muslims get, or Seventh-Day Adventists, or Jews, or Buddhists? I'm not sure what you mean by reading the Sealed Book of Mormon. Is this something you have come up with yourself?
