I'm a bit surprised to learn Bootsy didn't meet Lonnie Mack until just a few years ago, because they both gigged around Cincinnati as young musicians AND more importantly, they both recorded as session musicians for the famed KING records in Cincinnati. Mack worked more with Cincy label Fraternity, but I think he actually recorded on some James Brown stuff. Maybe that was before Bootsy's time. I believe Bootsy and Catfish Collins actually started playing at KING as a young teenager.

Lonnie Mack had an essence in his playing that couldn't be replicated...I had the good fortune to see him play live. He was as humble as it comes and every bit as good as it seems. I don't know, but I love him like a brother.

I love Lonnie, saw him with SRV in the 80s in SanDiego, but Roy Buchannon is the king to me.

The other day I was reading an article on "famous guitar players that use Flying V's" and Lonnie Mack wasn't even mentioned. What a shame.

@@bigrigJim His influence far outweighs his fame . That's would be ok with Mack though. He wasn't concerned about fame and fortune at all. He deliberately avoided big record labels and the demands and hassles that came with working for them for most of his career. He was probably better known in Europe and Australia than in the states. He just wanted to play when and where he chose and he did.A lot of well known rock guitarists acknowledged his importance in shaping the way rock guitarists play today. If Jeff Beck is playing a tribute song in your honor at his shows, you know you're a top player and a pioneer. Lonnie was literally the first rocker to play a V. He had one of the very first ever made. No 00007 serial number. 1958

+beachidiot Phelps "Catfish" Collins is Bootsy's older brother, who played guitar with him through their life. He and Bootsy were in James Brown's band, and after that, Parliament Funkadelic, and of course Booty's Rubber Band. Catfish passed away not to long ago though... look him up on here.
