Actualy, your Border Collie has OCD. They need alot of mental stimulation, if you don't provide them with it, thier minds will start to fixate on other things, such as reflections and shadows. Which is also why you should never have them chase a laser, it can lead to server OCD. They are a herding breed that is trying to chase something they can never catch. It can actually really mess them up if left unchecked. So don't just assume he is stuipid, and train your dog :)

If you have one like I did you must spend time training it, or it will end up training you.

Well, she was smart enough to actually try to get it off of herself instead of just sitting there helplessly. I’d still say it was a very proactive move, if not a smart one.

@@robo3715 nah she’s just a little dopey lmao, I had another one who held up the smartest breed standard, he was very intelligent and loyal he sadly passed away earlier this year though. I think she got used to relying on him to guide her around + it’s just her personality, she’s very silly.

Thats a good point, that is evident when she tries to take off the snood (hood). Her claws rotate and grips it like a cat which dogs normally can't do to that effect.

I boarded my horse at a barn where the owner had a border collie. The dog nearly drove the horses mad with his constant attempts to herd them.

I had the same cross, he was a nightmare pup but once we learned obedience he was the smartest most gentle dog, he would heel off leash when we lived in downtown Vancouver!

Hmmm, liking the happy hoodie is not a qualification of "Good Dog". It is a matter of personal taste. If a dog is willing to put up with the noise of the blower(each individual dog has its own unique personality), the happy hoodie is irrelevant. And clearly this particular dog was willing to put up with the sound of the blower. Additionally, trying to escape the bath for the first time is entirely natural, and due to its nature, would disqualify it, too, as a disqualification of "Good Dog". And personally, I believe you should re-examine what the definition of "Good Dog" is. And I will remind you, each and every individual dog has its own unique personality. That is a thing. I will give you an example. I had two collie-border collie mixes, from the same litter. One would do anything to please the humans, was the perfect dog, to his very last day on this Earth. The other one could not have cared any less. Both were raised the exact same way. But the two were so distinct from each other, not even training could "fix" it. One would love to chase after the ball, to get the smile and the customary "good boy!" when it returned the ball for another throw. The other, would just watch you throw it and not give a shit. One would try his hardest, jump his highest, to catch the frisbee, for the cheers of the humans. The other would just watch, because he just did not care about any of it. And so-on and so-on. One drank the human Kool-Aid, the other hated the human Kool-Aid. The two had distinct personal tastes and personalities. I loved them both unconditionally, both were "Good Boys".

I think it's great that she does that too. Dogs have to smell everything, their sense of smell is so superior. They check it out and see it's not so bad, so they're not so scared.

Can confirm you were totally being herded, my girl Cleo does that when we use the riding mower. Needless to say, she has to stay inside when that comes out because she can and WILL nip those tires and we aren't letting her hurt herself lol.

I swear sometimes they actually understand English fluently, but just don’t let us catch on! The way they understand our communication and can communicate right back blows my mind. Granted, you have to be tuned into each dog’s nuances so it can be difficult for outsiders to pick up on subtle things that are obvious cues to us. Ours looks us up and down and doesn’t even move at walk time if we don’t have the right walking trousers or shoes on. There’s so many other things, but BC’s are just incredible and I’d genuinely struggle to have a different breed now. One of our best exports 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I think its a confide space thing Boarder Collies like the open space and it seemed like a form of claustrophobia

So true I am in my second year owning a lovely BC but just when I think we’re good I need to learn something more to keep him content / peaceful / happy

I've been attacked numerous times by collies. Each time I responded the same way. Lethal force, immediately. First one I snapped its neck after it bit me the third time. Shoved my fist in the other's mouth, then beat it down and nearly killed it. Three years ago, I shot one dead. Have had TERRIBLE experience with this breed of dog. Smart perhaps, but more like dangerous. This breed needs to be illegal due to its aggression, stubborn and "herding" Mentality. Guess what you dumb dog? I'm bigger than you, smarter than you and when you attack me I'm not going to even remotely back down. I will use lethal force to kill an aggressive dog, and have done so before

They are definitely for a first time dog owner that is for certain. They naturally want to work so unless their owner has a lifestyle which allows them to tire out the animal physically and mentally, it won't go well. Our girl Gemma exhausted us. We took her hiking, swimming, car rides, she was happiest when on the go.

I have a collie and he’s the laziest herding dog I’ve ever seen. He’ll play, but only with other dogs or by himself with his toys. After that, he’s basically Homer Simpson on the couch.

Mine used to try and round up rain, which is of course impossible. I'd have to bring him inside or he'd destroy the back lawn trying to herd raindrops.

Doesn't need smart for finding treats. A lab can tell where you keep them just by walking past it.

A border collie is anything but a house dog. They go slightly nuts if kept in a house all day and will destroy the place sooner or later. Only get one if you are going to "work" them.

Terrible apartment dogs!! They are cute but absolutely need a yard to run in at the very least! My sisters’ BC named Neytiri will bring a toy to be thrown until the end of time, if she had her way lol

exactly why i would never be willing to get one. its aesthetics are so beautiful and by far my favorite for all dog colorations, but i wouldnt be willing to put in all that work for its breed

We had a sheltie the same way. Big yard and 2 young children to herd, not to mention protecting the yard from the birds... good lord did Emmy have it out for birds. Dad felt totally comfortible letting us in either yard or even leaving us home alone (age 10 up) because Emmy would have died before letting anyone near us kids.

Yes. A friend of ours had one & that dog herded all the little ones away from the edges of the yard back towards the house by instinct!

I had a dog like that when I was a kid- some kind of dalmatian/great dane/german shepherd mutt my grandma found in a box at the dump as a puppy. Her name was freckles and sometimes she'd let me ride her like a horse

My Australian Shepard pup was (literally) an actual pain in the Achilles heal as that was his means to heard us. Man those puppy teeth were sharp. That was a long time ago but I still remember him. Great dog that always slept between my legs (on top of the covers). When I had the time, I played my own game (as a kid) to try to slip out without waking him up. I never won.

Like many breeds of dogs, Border Collies were bred to serve a specific function - in their case, herd sheep (and other livestock as well). What was important to the persons who owned them and used them, was their value as a working dog, and NOT their appearance! Over time, by choosing the best working dogs as parents to the next generation of puppies, the working instinct genes were concentrated - and the ones that didn’t work, became pets for non farmers that did not contribute to the future of the breed. In the original breed clubs that developed, the written breed standard is far looser - this is a dog defined by how it WORKS, and NOT its appearance in the “beauty contest” of the dog show ring. In at least one Border Collie registry, if the owner even shows it ONCE in the AKC Conformation show ring, it *will* lose its registration papers for that original registry. Herding instinct and talent is a very complex, multiple gene trait that very quickly dilutes and evaporates if owners start to select for other characteristics, like head shape, ear set, coat type, back length, foot placement during movement, and the like. Border Collies in the USA that were bred for the conformation show ring (what you see when you watch Westminster Kennel Club show on TV) look VERY different from those that work on real farms and ranches all over the world, and they most likely don’t have 1/10th of the instinct or 1/100th of the ability to do the job for which they were developed.

Mine herds my rake when raking leaves, and my shovel when shoveling snow. Also a sliding screen door.

My dog He Is a half collie half Lakeland Terrier and he has exhibited herding behaviour. We have taken up into the fells here in Cumbria and a lot of farmers have sheep that just roam the area Meaning on our walks up there we encounter a lot of sheep. Our dog has displayed and shown herding instincts. I have a lot of experiences with Collies. I have relatives who are farmers up here in Cumbria where Collies are probably used to there best ability up in the fells I have known a lot of collies even ones that have NEVER even been on a farm and are generations from actual herding Collies and yet I have seen them interact with sheep just as naturally as farm collies , not with as much skill tho but that comes with experience not instinct

@@mkgaming5823 my dog was only half Australian Cattle Dog and she herded us as a puppy. She eventually stopped, but that was her instinct, to herd us absolutely everywhere and grab hold of the bottom of our pants to drag us where she wanted us to go. My pajamas had holes lol.

Actually she was rather relaxed... You can see her body completely untensed and even calm when she's being brushed, she probably isn't quite sure about the camera getting close or the water and the happy hoodie but other than that if she were stressed she wouldn't sit still.

@@lilskipper4683 Some dogs pant excessively when stressed I'm sure that was what Pat was talking about given Groot was chugging like a train engine during the trim. SHe is a very well trained girl though and as GwtD said very smart so she likely knew after the first try that attempting to bolt was fruitless.

@@mousepariah3884 Dogs also pant when they're hot, considering she has a LOT of fur and it's also winter there's probably heating in there. If that's the case then she would be panting loudly/a lot to cool off... Not to mention it doesn't matter if they're the smartest dog in the room, if they're stressed and wanna get away they *will* do it.

we have known four generations of one (working) line of collies, plus more from other breeding lines. you can always tell when one of this specific line is near you from the 'steam train' sound. The other lines just don't breathe as fast, whether relaxed or working or stressed. it. just a family thing for them!

Rough collies and shelties are a little lower energy. They will still need plenty of daily exercise though.

@@AshleyM120 ....I know full well my dog has no concept of the Latin alphabet, it's just fun to say "he can spell." He figured out the phonetic consequence of "w-a-l-k" too, he fetched his leash. It was meant to be cute, not literal.

I hope so but many Border Collies, especially young ones, have a mind that goes 120 in a 50 zone. So, they'll usually always be stressed by having to stand still and do nothing. They usually hate things that require some 'chill'.

My sheltie would 100% cheat at tasks and such to get a toy or treat it's funny

My sheltie is a terrorist 😂 he will take a shoe hostage. He will not damage the shoe, but he will stand over it until a treat or extra walkies/agility course play time is offered in exchange 😆 he's so smart, so good at his job, knows all sorts of words & parlor tricks. Good boy but oof that mischievous streak is so real 😂😂😂

Neurotic is definitely a good word for most of them I have met! I have a feeling the ones I met were just not exercised enough and developed separation anxiety and all kinds of weird behaviors and definitely makes me understand I wouldn’t be able to give them enough exercise lol. My dogs like to run around a bit then take a nap 😂

I totally agree, have mostly had herding breeds. They do best when you give them plenty of exercise and a JOB. My mother always said I was raised by our border collie, I was his little sheep, to herd and keep in our yard. I had a Shetland Sheepdog who would get obsessed and would "Sheltie-spin" in tight circles, if he couldn't be walked or exercised much. Now there are 2 Aussie-mix rescues here who herd each other and play lots of tag and games, on top of walks and dog-park visits. They keep me active instead of seditary and sitting too much. Speaking of which, gotta go, dog-park time!!!!

We gave mine a lot of puzzle treat toys. That helped keep him mentally stimulated and I used to walk him everyday before I went to school in middle and high school. Some days he’d walk up to 6 miles

I was 'raised by a border collie' also. Mom would hand me chunks of milkbone treats to shove in various pockets, tell him to "keep her in the yard" and turn us loose in our 3/4 acre & unfenced yard. It was the absolute best childhood. I have had several other types of dogs since, but am particularly drawn to the collie & aussie types (2 of them asleep at my feet right now).
