Bosch Kiox Ebike Display Updates: GPS Navigation, Custom Views, Retrofit!

Bosch announced several updates for their Kiox electric bike display this past week. These will be free for existing Kiox owners (though a dealer may charge you to install the new software). I've listed a few of the updates below and welcome your feedback!
Navigation including distance from destination, automatic screen orientation, and ability to plan routes with the official Bosch ebike connected app or in their online portal (routes are then sent to the Kiox display)
Navigation is compatible with Komoot and OutdoorActive applications which help you find and explore new areas to ride!
The update also includes technical improvements such as stabilized Bluetooth (more reliable connection between Bosch KIOX and smartphone)
The views and layout of the Kiox display can now be customized to only show the readouts that you choose (only see the ride data that you want)
All of this is available as a software update from 2020 onwards... and Kiox can be retrofitted if you've got a Purion or Intuvia display! Before this announcement, you had to purchase an ebike that came with the display already installed. The two biggest reasons that I would pay for a Kiox upgrade is because it offers wireless compatibility with heartrate monitors, and a Micro-USB charging port to keep your phone charged while riding (or possibly other USB powered portable electronic device).

I just upgraded my Trek Supercommuter +7 from the purion to the Kiox. Took over 2 weeks to ship from Italy but it was so worth it! Looking forward to the upgrades!

Sweet!!! Nice upgrade here, glad it went off without a hitch. I’m guessing you’re in NA and had to ship from Italy since they weren’t selling individually before?

Every time I turn on the bike the display reads "eBike system update necessary. Please contact your bike dealer to perform an update."

I asked my local shop last year if it was going to be possible to upgrade from Intuvia to Kiox and he didn’t know. I had given up on the idea, so this is great to hear. I particularly want the power and cadence view, but just in general the Kiox is such a nice display. May also use the HR function possibly. And it’ll keep my 2017 R&M bike relevant for much longer. Which is awesome because I can’t really afford to replace it any time soon anyway.

Yeah! I like Kiox also, and had confirmed with Chris from Propel that you could upgrade to it... but Bosch wasn’t selling it independently last year, so you had to choose ebikes that already had it preinstalled. Good point about the cadence view, I really like that stat! Which R&M model did you get? I love their bikes :)

ElectricBikeReview.com Delite GT Nuvinci with the external battery. I’ve talked about it before so there’s not much new to say. Other than I had to mount my single battery in the upper slot because there seems to be an issue with the locking mechanism on the down tube mount and the battery almost came out a couple of times. Luckily the top mount is fine. And it also means I can charge without taking the battery off every single time, which is weird restriction if you don’t have two batteries.

I’m so excited! I’m waiting for my new Superdelite to get here, and already I have a software update for the Gen4 motor and now a software update for the Kiox display! Thanks, Court!

ElectricBikeReview.com - I have seen several inconsistent reports about the Gen4 motor updates, some saying the torque increase applies to CX and SPEED, others saying CX only. They are leaving room for EBR to settle this with the complete and correct story on the Gen4 motor updates. We all depend on you, Court! And you were FIRST with the Kiox news! I didn’t see any mention of the Kiox update before EBR.

Hi Court, your sporting a cool, new look. :) I really like the idea of GPS function on ebike displays. The only problem with requiring Bluetooth connection to Cell phone, is that you will be charged for DATA while using it. Very expensive. When you use a Garmin Edge or other cycling GPS, they don't require data usage. GRIN TECH has GPS tracking/navigation on there systems also. These work thru the self-contained, onboard system.

@@ElectricBikeReview Well if Trudeau takes on an open boarder policy(I won't need a Passport), i might just ride of there. I love Vancouver BC... Before 9 1 1, i went up there most weekends to visit. It would be an interesting interview with Justin from GRINN comparing their GPS system to the bosch gps system.

I recent purchased a Kiox for my new Trek Verve+ 3 that I will be using to do a 7 day ride from San Francisco to Santa Monica in 2 wks. Since ALL the other bike computers I have owned over the years (several Garmin and now a Wahoo) have had integrated GPS, it didn’t dawn on me until I did a Labor Day ride, that my new Kiox (less than 30 days) doesn’t come with integrated GPS. For the price of their products, Bosch needs to offer what every other upgraded cycling computer has and that is integrated GPS. In order to track my 7 day ride, I need to have my phone on ALL day which is going to kill my iPhone battery and me possibly incurring unnecessary data charges. This really sucks! I just got a txt from a friend who said “These days how does a bike computer not have GPS?” 😡

I guess it is good that the Kiox is retro-fitable, as the Intuvia displays on our R+M bikes have experienced a variety of issues. I originally chose Intuvia over Kiox due to the Kiox display being so small and hard to read. Navigation is not really a feature I care about, since I ride routes I am familiar with 99% of the time,. I do want eShift for our Rohloff bikes. Due to the special cable, I have found the usb charging on the Intuvia is not very usable (I really want to power my sports cam with it). I wish that Bosch allowed integration with my Wahoo Elemnt GPS bike computer, as that would mean I could see the data I care about on the Wahoo display and I would no longer need to attach separate speed and cadence sensors to the bike. We have one ebike with a Purion display, that is: 1) trouble-free, 2) simple, shows what I need, 3) does not take up valuable real estate on the handlebars in the center. If only is a Purion "2.0" could integrate with the Wahoo, it would be perfect.

Excellent insights... I like your suggestion of Purion 2.0. To be honest, I feel that the Kiox display is smaller and more difficult to read than Purion, and I’m not sure about Micro-USB charging reliability. However, it has lots of great features and I’m glad that it has become an upgrade option! I’m most excited about the new Nyon, especially with it coming to North America!!

No helmet. Seems so odd! Kiox remediates the connectivity issue that has been pointed out in like every Bosch system EBR video!

My Kiox bought new on 26th July 2020 has a fault showing that the unit has no charge and turns the bike off. Waiting for a replacement.

Hi Richard! I think you might need to visit a shop to get the update, and it might not even be out yet... Bosch just told me "Summer 2020" so it might be a week or a month until shops have access. I'm guessing sometime in July but maybe others will chime in if they know more details ;)

So I saw one of your videos with a 13 year old boy having his first electric bike and I said a question in that video and the question was where is this electric bike center something like that because I'm trying to buy my first electric bike and I had the same problem as that kid I was searching on the internet and they were too expensive and I don't know if it's going to fit me as well like my height and everything and I am 13 years old I am having the same problem as the kid and that's my question is the Bike Center store is it still there and can you give me the time when they open and where is it located at. thank you that is my question.

Okay, yeah! The Electric Bicycle Center is a store that is located in Fullerton California. The former owner, Sam Townsend, moved to Thailand with his wife. The store is now owned by Mike, who owns the Fullerton Bike Shop just next door. I think they sold most of the cheaper ebikes and are starting to carry different brands now, so I’m not sure it’s as relevant to you as a young person. Hi Saad! I don't think so. This was something that I asked the Bosch Reps when they told me about the conference. I think you need to schedule a visit to a certified Bosch ebike dealer to have them do it. And, I'm not 100% sure the update is even available yet? I'd definitely call first ;)

I called my Trek dealer. The update is done in the store.

You do not need to use the store. I have upgraded mine at home. the ebike connect app will download and transfer to the Kiox. The update will be released in stages so not to overload servers. Just make sure you keep your phone connected to the Kiox. the Kiox will let you know there is an update (not the App). you can choose to install there and then or install at power off

It seems some people are getting confused over the updates. The kiox update is over the air and can be done at home through your phone. The gen 4 motor update to 85nm must be done in store
