Really cool stuff. I wish they sort of put all of their synth stuff together in on unit. This kind of thing but also the PCM based stuff of the GR-55 - real pianos, strings, etc. The guitar stuff has always been the sort of sleeper of these units. I'd love to just hear the variety of sounds it has and its sort of limits of that. Thanks!

@@LeonTodd That's nice to hear. I did about 20 but can't remember all the names. I think Fooled You Again (The Who reference one), Stratosynth, Ambient Scape were some others. My favourite one was 'Discovery' I think. Play a single note on either top strings and hold it with CTL2 to run the Arp. Then do bass roots on the low two strings and some harmony with the pad on the middle ones. Quite good fun when you get it going. It was tough to do as we didn't have the Mac/PC editor and couldn't use external controllers for the patches (like extra switches and expression) so you couldn't go too deep with it. If you do have that stuff it's a very powerful unit with all the assignment stuff. I'll have to see if I can get it back off Boss sometime and dig a bit deeper with it. I did a bunch for the GT-1000 too and it's me playing the track in the promo video for it ( not on camera though ;) ). Keep up the good work mate. Love the channel. I was an 80's shred kid so you know I'm digging it!! :D \m/ T

Cool, also having this thing laying around for some weeks - still waiting for a new guitar on which I can install the Synth pickup. Don't want to damage my other guitars. Looking forward for more videos - for me unique and interesting patches from scratch are more interesting than the presets.

I am thinking of adding this to use for modeled guitars and all you need is a guitar with a great neck and a floyd I am thinking of getting a cheap Harley Benton that has a good neck and adding the graph tech ghost pu hardware to make it 13 pin roland ready and use nothing on the Harley Benton pickup wise only the modeled guitar stuff and then if that works out maybe order a custom kiesel with 13 pin or modify something nice from Ibanez or sterling.

Wow, so many fun sounds. Wouldn't mind seeing your take on how to mimic a couple of these presets on the AXE FX. But, I'd be interested in just about anything you want to show on it. The track you did sounded great. How about a cover of Gary Newman's Cars with a Ragdoll spin?

@@LeonTodd Oh yes it has arrived! I'm love the Plexi amp I'm so blown away how I feel like I'm really playing the amp for real with all the Red, Orange Crunch/lead scenes! Still haven't gone through all the different amps yet though. I just ordered the EV-1 today. I'm actually listening to your Sy-1000 Deep Dive #1 right now. I'm really struggling with if I should go for the Sy or not just because I own some very expensive synths but play the guitar much better than I do the keys. I would also like to be able to play my synths with it too. Or there's the Artiphon or the JAmmey as you know I'm sure cause your such a badass! Even the seller of my FM3 recommended you and I said .oh yeah I watch to Leon all the time! I have owned several other GR synths and still have 2 GK pups and all the cables so I don't know if I'd be better just going with buying like a Eventide H9 but then again the FM3 might be able to do all that unless the CPU is too limited.

I am using the SY-1000 with all the Effects Bypassed and I process the V-Instruments (Nylon, Acoustic, Synths, Bass, Alt Tuning guitars, etc) at the Axe-FX III. Try that, and you will be amazed with the quality of the results. Some Boss AMPs and FXs are quite good (although it is a pity that you cannot load User IRs), but Fractal Audio provides an extra professional touch. Specially with the AMPs, CABs, Delays and Reverbs

Hey Leon, thanks for putting this together. I've got a GR-55, and had a GR-1 before that. I was always frustrated with the ghost notes you would get on many of the patches with short attack times. I'm wondering, do you find you do get extra notes sounding, particularly if you're not playing immaculately clean? Thanks.

Holy hell that thing is Soo cool! There's so many things we as guitarist could do with that just in the background of a track. I'd love to see you build some custom presets just to see it's full capabilities. You've sold me, gotta have one of those bad boys! I could most likely do my cover of the Terminator theme. Edit: I had no idea you had to install a pickup for it. Which is ok I would just have a hard time picking the guitar I want it on.

For what it's worth; you can use the Dynamic synth stuff with regular pickups. Just like the SY300. You do lose out on instrument modeling and alt-tunings; which is a big loss imo.

have you tried to play it without the pickup? i.e. going straight through from the gtr output to its input and if so, does it track the same or affect the sound? also what do you think of its price? its quite expensive imo and it is mainly targeted to a musician who centers his repertoire around synth sounds and not someone who just wants to add a flavor or experiment. you can get the sy-1 for that for 200€. thoughts?

Great demo Leon. and the analog sounds are really fantastic. Its a shame though that they didn't include the PCM tones like the GR55. I'm sure they have come a long way since then and this thing would be killer with it. But without, for anyone who uses PCM tones, it's a bit of a dealbreaker.

Leon what’s the difference of having the pickup or just plugging into the sy1000??? My wife bought one for my birthday today and didn’t come with pickup so I was wondering what’s the difference if you just plug in vs the pickup

No guitar modeling, limited synth ability. Worth the extra first to get a GK IMO as I think the guitar modeling is one of the best features.

I toured with the Roland VG-88v.2 , bought it about 20 years ago, cant believe the pickup (Gk-3) still as bulky as it was 20+ years ago. we need a new one the gr-55 is so dated already.

My Dad still has an original VG8 that he bought new. I always remember being so amazed as a young kid hearing violin and sax sounds come out of his guitar. Agree that a slimmed down GK would be amazing.

"First impression" is always good (Lol.)....but what I would like to know if you had used it a few times (i.e., recording and gigging, etc.) if you noticed that there are any Ghost and Running notes. For instance, Roland GR-55's Nylon and Piano sound (responsible for the PCM1 and PCM2 effects) does not able to do consecutive chords/notes. Most of the time - if you press 4 notes - you'll only hear 1 to 2 notes (ghost). On the other side....if you press the same 4 notes, you might hear the first or 2nd notes....then they might repeat 5 to 8 times for the same note (i.e., "G"...and then, it continue running as, "G...G, G, G, G...G", etc.). I've already contacted Roland awhile ago; they had NOT replied. I know there's a problem with GR-55. So.....my question is - does SY-1000 have the same problem????? Sorry, I'm not sure if you know - since this is your "first impression." Thanks.

You know, if you like this kind of stuff you might like using an Ableton Push2 with Ableton Live. I have a Push2 and it's so powerful in creating things like this quickly. Check it out if you get a chance. I picked up a used Push2 pretty cheap off Reverb.

Personally I am mostly interested in the guitar modeling to see what it sounds like into an axe fx 3. Classical patches from the GP10 sounded great and I would use this guys settings and translate them to the sy1000 he did such a great job on the presets he created for that unit ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ssRzCBg_HzQ.html Im just interested in the SY1000 for its guitar modeling and pedals that are some what unique and not available in the axe and its loop to use an EHX attack decay. If I want to do synth stuff Im using plugins and that cheap software jam something or other that sends midi out to plugins or hardware if connected up and I have a lot of great sounds in plugins that I would rather use. I play keys anyway so I am just more used to getting sounds with synth stuff on keys.

Turbo Lover intro and incidental sounds were done on the old 1984 GR707 guitar & GR700 synth... I am lucky to own these units and it’s my favourite sound. BTW the middle repeat licks on Rebel Yell are also the 700 / 707 ✊️😊

Finally we see Leon is human!!! The master of all things demo is human!!! This demo didn't display anything any of the Roland synths can't do. You say it tracks so much better but you didn't show this. Any of us that have used synths know it comes down to one thing and one thing only. Tracking. This demo didn't show any better tracking than any Roland products. It comes down to one model. Piano. PIANO. Show the tracking of the piano patches and you have something. All the patches you used can hide all day in mediocre tracking. Fast runs and accurate tracking are the only thing anyone that uses synths really cares about. They can ALL sound lush and full with chords. /sigh.... the quest for better tracking continues on.... Leon is still undefeated in my book however lol....

There are no "Piano" sounds in the SY. Or any other PCM tones; while we're at it. The dynamic synths track d@mn near flawlessly. As does the GR300 emulations. It's the OSC synths that are slow to respond. Very rich sounding and perfect for things like the Blade Runner preset. If you want to do fast runs; dynamic synth or GR300 is the ticket.

Had the Sy300, useless junk. Now the required special pickup has returned on the SY1000, more expen$ive junk. All we asked for was synth solo patches (more than one usable patch) that are actually editable, not just strummy strum strum sfx patches and without the required chunky special pickup
