Episode 21 of Sailing Exodos. Both Yanmars 1GM10 threw all their oil out. Replacing both head gaskets and finding the source of the stupidness!

Haha, well, nowadays you can get a lot of know-how from the internet (read: RU-vid), but I have had a mechanics education long time ago, so there are some things still lingering around in my bald head :-) And my brother is a real mechanic, so always handy!

Hahaha! If you need to do everything yourself, you automatically learn how to do the jobs :D And yes, that 1 cylinder - it looks like every boat we buy, has at least one of those!

Hey Wim, this repair was already a few months ago for you. My Yanmar 1GM10 also leaked oil from the head just like that. Your video was very inspiring and helpful in doing this job myself. Thank you. Keep making nice videos of your adventure with Anja. Thank you.

Hey... I already reacted on your comment... Strange. So, again :-) Glad that our video was helpful! Good to hear. And yes, we will try to keep making these videos. although I hope it'll be more sailing and exploring videos than repair/refit videos 😁

Ahah You have don that before.. top job ! Nice instructions. Lovey engines , they cant go bad if proper maintenance is preformed. A little tip is not to use “kroonstenen” They are in most cases the cause of trouble. On a starter system the wires and connections are kept simple and direct. Use krimps and solder to make it perfect. The reason is that if the battery is low on voltage and you start the engine the amperage is humongous high. That can cause the connection to overheat. A fire hazard is imminent. But nevertheless awesome job well done. My respect to you sir

Yeah, kroonsteentjes are causing a lot of trouble. I am going to order a new wire. I have to rewire lots of things anyway. But too much work left to do that right now.

Tenc un veler Gibsea 26' amb un Yanmar 1Gm10 i tenc la culata desmontada per falta de compresió. Aquest vídeo m'ajudarà a montar-lo.

Hey, I just watched your engine video with great interest. I have 2gm20's and they were both completely ceased when I bought the engine. They are almost identical to your 1gm10's. To cut a long story short, I have rebuilt both of them completely over the past 2 months and finally have them running nice. Your starting problem, I had exactly the same problem and like you I pointed at the ground, the batteries and the starter motor. After messing around with everything I was still suffering intermittent starting problems and couldn't work it out. In the end it was actually the gear selectors that were at fault, you wouldn't believe it but they have a cut-off switch in them that prevents the engines being turned over if you have it in gear. Of course you wouldn't have tried to start in gear but the small pressure switch on the underside of the selectors sometimes stick and prevent you from turning the starter motor. If you take a look at the back of the start panel and trace the wires coming from the start switch you will see it runs to the gear selector and then off to the starter motor. Simple fix is to remove the pressure switch out of the circuit. Took me a week to find this problem, I thought I would share this with you and hopefully save you a headache. @@DoubleUThings It was a week of searching and diagnosis. without looking at the selector you would never know its there. Looks like you got to the bottom if it. 1GM's are a great engine, simple and straightforward to work on. Keep up the great videos, we watch every episode :)

check the head bolts after several hours of motoring. some head gaskets need to be re tightened . Groeten uit Holland !
