I feel like the base requirement of someone being a Karen is responding to a minor inconvenience or infraction with an intent to do harm. If someone yells at service worker and tries to get them fired for a simple mistake, that’s a Karen. If somebody sees something potentially dangerous and tries to step in before someone gets hurt, that’s just being a responsible person.

I was in the mall, just enjoying my food, when these two like 8-year-olds came up to me, one holding a phone and recording. The other kid said something along the lines of like "can I get a high five" or something and I just stared at them for a second and went back to eating. Their parents were sitting a few tables down and totally ignoring them 💀 Like please get your children. What a well timed video, for me personally lmfao. First thing, thanks for another great video Jarvis! Your good heart and measured takes are much appreciated! Without giving too much detail, I just had some freaks come into my work the other day and try to secretly film a ~doing weird sexual shit with my “sister” video~ and it made me so FUCKING uncomfortable that I had to work with them and deal with this shit. Told them filming and photography wasn’t allowed there (which it isn’t), told them to keep my identity out of it multiple times, and they denied everything, and now i gotta try to get whatever video they put together of it taken down from this fuckhead’s channel of over 250k subscribers cuz I don’t wanna be on the fucking internet being tested and made uncomfortable on purpose with some weird ass sexual shit that I can’t escape as a service worker. Hoping the copyright infringement involved is enough for my employer to make the dipshit take it down. So glad I wear a face mask at work so I’m at least a little shielded, but I’ll never be the same. Luckily dude gave me his full name as was like “I have a podcast!” so that I could look up his channel lmao. It was so goddamn uncomfortable, and SO obviously bullshit. Had to deal with it totally alone on a busy ass day at work. It’s a violation of the people you subject to your “pranks” (especially when you make it sexual) and an *absolute* waste of your life. Like imagine doing this shit for a living/hobby, imagine wasting peoples time and making people feel uncomfortable and afraid on PURPOSE, and thinking you’re GIVING something to the world. Imagine thinking this shit is worth anything. It’s so sad. Such a goddamn shame, I’d be so embarrassed if that was the life I created for myself. Maybe it’s a nice reality check for those of us who doubt our value and purpose in the world lol. Even if you’re doing literally nothing in your community/the world, you’re certainly doing better than this guy is. (And I mean that sincerely. I’m of the opinion that someone sitting in a basement doing nothing except maybe giving a friend/family member a smile once in awhile has value and is important and good as they are. I think every life inherently has value, and these prankester fucks are purposely making sewage out of their lives and dumping it out the window to let it rain on the innocent people walking by on the street.) Also just want to note that although this was a SEVERELY uncomfortable, creepy, (and illegal!!) situation, I’m okay and never felt like I was in immediate danger. I wish it was someone a bit tougher and less forgiving that was working that day bc maybe they would noticed and stopped the bullshit sooner and better than I did, but I am ok and -although I am likely going to be exploited on the internet in ways I am SERIOUSLY not ok with- I didn’t feel afraid for my life or traumatized during the event. Just violated and fucking ANNOYED. PEOPLE ARE SO FUCKIN STUPID IT HURTSSSSS

As one of those people myself, every time I see a group of like 14-20 year olds come into the store with this kind of attitude everyone gets so on edge and pissed off. Pranks are funny when they're actually pranks. A prank is supposed to make the other person feel foolish in a kind of good-natured way. Watch clips from that "Just for Laughs" show to see actually funny pranks, which include people building a boardroom set around the entrance of a port-a-potty when someone is in there, or asking a stranger to take a photo of them only for the person getting their picture taken to literally become a different person when someone distracts the prankee, and then at the end the people point out the cameras and everyone has a good laugh. No employees are bothered, nobody's harassed, nobody's hurling slurs at random dudes on the beach.

See, my favorite prank is when at a restaurant, my friend asked for milk with ice in it. The waitress forgot the ice, so my friend asked if she drank a little bit, if she could put some ice in it. (very politely, I must add) while the waitress was chatting with us, she chugged the whole glass and went "i might need some more milk" and then the waitress informed us that it was the last of the milk in the entire restaurant. It was just a genuinely funny moment that made everyone involved laugh and hurt no one (except maybe the milk stock, but it would've needed to be refilled anyway.) also, it wasn't recorded at all. that's what pranks should be; tiny absurd things that turn into funny stories for the person involved to tell to family or friends later. not literal harassment repackaged as a quirky prank.

Had a kid ask me to film a TikTok for him a couple months back while I was stocking, I was clearly busy and had a considerable amount of freight to get through. He wouldn’t leave me alone so I agreed to it so he’d go away, when he started dancing I pointed the phone at the floor, told him I got it and he ran off all excited.

This video really does a good job of highlighting why all these prank channels died off. Everyone is in on the "prank" these days. They used to be mildly entertaining (although still ethically questionable) ten years ago when this was all new. The reactions were genuine and some seriously funny scenarios would unfold. Now? If anyone sees anything remotely ridiculous happening it's like, clearly they're trying to make a tiktok. As a result, you just get people rolling their eyes and calling out the situation for what it is. Not to mention that almost any time we do get a real reaction it's either because the situation is staged or the prankster does something so insane/dangerous that it's impossible not to illicit some sort of reaction.

I really think it says something about people's social and emotional development that making a career out of inconveniencing and actively harming people, in one of the most direct and immediate ways possible, is something they want.

The number of people who subscribe to this type of content in the first place, perpetuating this kind of behavior. Of course we should be angriest at the content creator, but he’s not acting alone. All those subscribers allow him to do what he does and gives him a profit motive to keep doing it. I blame all those people.

I’m in constant fear since I was in the background of someone’s vlog so my stalker figured out my new job in my new town. Now he’s broken into my place twice and I’m about to get fired because he’s a problem. BROADCASTING OTHERS WITHOUT CONSENT IS DANGEROUS.

I honestly think that recording people for TikTok/RU-vid without their consent should be illegal. It's one thing if you're recording yourself and someone gets caught in the background, but when you're focusing the video on a person that didn't consent to be filmed that should be something you can get in trouble for.

Okay: I film someone committing a crime or doing something terrible in a public space, is it illegal because I didn’t ask them politely before I did so? Also it’s so obviously a completely unenforceable rule and there is not social media platform or government that would knowingly put that rule in place.

@@courier6960 you must not know how to read? I quite specifically said recording someone FOR TIKTOK OR RU-vid without their consent. Obviously there are legitimate reasons to film a person without consent, none of those fall under things that should or even can be posted on RU-vid/TikTok.

I should start a prank channel where I find people filming pranks and then I record myself destroying their phone and then tossing enough money for them to buy a used cheap smartphone at their feet mafia style while giving them an insincere apology.
