This hit so many things I'm going through today.I have a bad tendency to not tell people what is bothering me that they did and just kick them out of my life.I guess I'm afraid of making them upset but then I hold resentments because I dont want to upset them.My therapist said I can protect myself without kicking people out of my life.The mean what you say but dont be mean was pretty good.A lot of this video applied to what I go through.

Boundaries and setting them are concepts that I only awakened to as an adult. Years of 12-Step work and therapy have helped me get to the point that boundaries are more about self-love than "being selfish." Thanks for the video and for telling me about it on Instagram.

I might make multiple comments on this so that I don't forget. When it came to all the people that I was around it did not matter what I said. They would cross my boundaries. I think the most important thing was my pain tolerance and me setting limits with myself. I think my body was telling me that it could not take people crossing my boundaries. I think the biggest part of it for me and still is to this day and my PRIDE will say something different but I physically can not handle when people cross my boundaries. When I am finally honest with MYSELF then I can start making decisions to start protecting myself. You really opened a can of worms with this one. When I was in LA and I was going to meetings I had a couple girls ask if they were getting beat up if I were to jump in and I said no. They didn't get it. When I was out there I was constantly seeing people fighting. I would go the other way. Boundaries for me is self-protection. Seeing people go towards the crazy. I was out in LA for the first year of Covid and BLM. If you were going to do a BLM protest with doing yoga in the park sign me up but if you are going to yell at police officers and destroy businesses then no. To me that is what boundaries are. Now I am in Denver. I have tons of choices. I purposely go to a grocery store that is 15 minutes away rather than to many that are within 5 minutes away because that further away one is peaceful. Granted I could also say that the employees are slow but that would be coming from the part of me that is chaotic.. OOoo there is a lot with this..

You said a whole lot more after my comment but what comes to mind is self-care. Why am I setting boundaries. To protect myself. The thing about aggressive/assertive and where I am at with that is that sometimes I am ok with being aggressive to protect my boundaries. Sometimes I am even ok with being passive. Driving in LA is like no other experience. Now I am living in Denver and it really does not take long to get anywhere. I am constantly cut off. When I see a Mercedes Benz I know they are going to cut me off. I have a choice I can be aggressive or I can be passive. The weird thing is that when I am passive and let them cut me off and let my foot off of the gas I normally get to all of my appointments early. Weird how that works. My heart rate and blood pressure is lower and my body is less stressed. So I would say in that instance being passive is my boundary. That is also my self-care.

Sounds like you are on the right track, Darin. Go where the peace is! Surround yourself with peace. Connect with peaceful people, those who give you strength.

Thank you for sharing this information. I'm taking Addictions Studies classes thru Community College and becoming a SUD someday, but I don't have any experience of substance abuse of any kind, grew up in a different country, came to USA back in 1990 I'm never around anybody that abuse alcohol, or drugs of any kind. How can I relate those feelings and experiences if I didn't have any?
@DRKJFOSTER

I would suggest learning as much as you can about SUD's and also as much as you can about compassion. An understanding of SUD's and how to be compassionate toward those with SUD's is critical.

@@DRKJFOSTER yes, I ordered books about compassion, empathy, caring about other people, and understanding how trauma can impact other people! and how the human brain works when it comes to chemical dependency.
