Jerry Quarry and Mike Quarry were the stars of a family in which the patriarch, their father Jack, had "HARD LUCK" tattooed across his knuckles. Maybe they never had a chance.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina team up to remember the Legendary Quarry Family.

Ring Magazine ranked Jerry Quarry as the 27th greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. One major victory that Jerry Quarry had in his prime is that Heavyweight Champion Big George Foreman backed out of 2 scheduled title bouts with Quarry. Foreman stated that Jerry Quarry was the only boxer that he purposely ducked in the 1970's.

Jerry was being over medicated by his brother at the time of the West Coast Hall of Fame night. The family came in and took Jerry away from his brother and he wasnt so out of it after he got off all the medications

Remember hearing about Jim and Jerry at Bellflower High School. They were known bullies. Would knock a guy down in front of his girlfriend. This guy said he dreaded seeing them. Relieved when they left the school.

Jimmy did break Uncle Jerry’s back just before that fight. He also did break his back 2 other times. Once when diving into a pool from a rooftop. He didn’t tell his parents for a year and for gang green from not getting treatment.

You've got to wonder why jerry couldn't stop an over the hill Floyd Patterson, a glass-jawed Jimmy ellis and a robotic Thad Spencer

I communicated with Jerry’s brother James back in 1998. He did say he knocked Jerry out. To this day that’s the one thing James ever said that I questioned 🤔

1:27:05 Agreed he should have never been there. Jimmy arranged that fight. James Quarry to be clear.

Can’t believe James did that, he loved Jerry. Very surprised to hear that 😮

There's a 1964 film covering British fighter Billy Walker, but in that film there's some amazing medical study on brain damage and doctors involved in the study are interviewed. Way back in 1964, physicians had a understanding of boxing related brain damage, how the brain gets knocked around like Gelatin, and how a latency period occurs before the damage is noticed, they quoted a 14 year latency period before seriousness becomes noticeable. When you look back at the long history of some fighters, that 14 years is certainly relevant. Anyway, it's old school, but it's certainly worth a look and it's a bit shocking, relevant information concerning boxing & brain damage was known way back then. Here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QXIzJmBqnvw.html Have a nice Christmas, Sincerely Slade

Oh, another quick point I meant to share from the film. So, since there's a latency period of 14-16 years before the extent of damages start to show, that means damage is always occurring but you can't tell to what extent the damages are until much later.

There is so much information shared here about my grandpa Jack that is just unfair to his character. Some of the info is correct, but some is just not even true. His name is not James by the way. Demonizing a multifaceted human being to fit a narrow minded narrative is wrong. He was not perfect and came from his own unfortunate background without the tools to know better. He ALWAYS worked hard, never taking welfare, and waiting for Christmas every year to get a new pair of work boots, but he made sure his kids had a home and food and showed them love by spending his free time teaching them the things he knew! He was also a very articulate man who sang and wrote, much like Uncle Jerry did. He taught the boys how to play chess and the girls how to sing. Taught them all about the Bible(Baptists, not Catholics). Later on in life he taught them the business of tires that he worked in for 20 years. His behavior was at times abusive! There is no excuse for that! But to propose that he was simply and cruel man and a sociopath is ridiculous! I know men like that exist and creating a “character” like that sells books, but he was not that man. He wanted to teach and guide his children and after being raised by an abusive father and told at 14 he had to leave the home because he was too old to feed anymore, he was left on his own to make due and learn from the streets. This is where he boxed and obviously had enough talent to pass on to his boys that Johnny Flores was willing to take them on! Also, as far as his career Johnny and Grandpa Jack were CO-MANAGERS for 7 years! Not all of the decisions fall on Jack, but that’s all I’m hearing. As far as his hurt ankle, my mom was there when he hurt it just days before the fight. He slid into second base, laid there in pain and started saying he thought his ankle was broken. His wife ran over and stood over him yelling he still had to fight because they needed the money! But why not just make that out to be all on Jack too? He’s already the bad guy! And I will tell you this. My uncles LOVED boxing! Shoot, my aunts loved boxing! My uncles boxed long after my grandpa was out of the picture. He even said he felt responsible for what happened to my uncles and even regretted introducing them to that world. He was not an a perfect person and made many terrible mistakes, but to make him out to be someone he isn’t is not right. It’s unfair to his legacy and his family who remains. He is not some character in a book that people should feel free to rip apart without regard to the truth. Our family is far from perfect, and many people have their own agendas when they share their sides of the story. Did anyone ever ask Jimmy how old they were when he gave Uncle Jerry the 10 count? 🙄 Not everyone is honest and even if they are sometimes the honest truth doesn’t sell and writers take liberties. On top of that people just love to feel like they know things about people when they honestly just don’t. It helps them feel a part of something I guess. My point though, if you’re trying to give accurate historical background, you should do better!

Aris gotta lay off the Sudoku during the show. When it's Patrick's turn I'd prefer a phony smile..a friendly nod..smth... not trying to nitpick,I enjoy the podcast,but..Okay now he's doing household chores! A comment on another video, called Patrick "the old guy" and Aris "the young one"..as in "respect your elders"🤔..as in the disrespect must be generational.😏 Gil Clancy said Quarry could really box in the gym just wouldn't stick to it on the night. Bad man nonetheless. Great show. Keep it up.
