As Nick Diaz said: "You've got Floyd Mayweather making 25 million... He can't stop a double-leg"
@CM-ue6bi
@CM-ue6bi 7 лет назад
I love Nick Diaz but that is one of the most stupid things I have ever heard. Floyd is a boxer, he doesn't need to defend a takedown. Should Nick Diaz not get payed/get payed less because he couldn't throw a 180 in darts? Different sports which require different skills due to the different rules.
@jurado1010
@jurado1010 7 лет назад
+CM678 His point was that mma requires a broader skill set yet boxers who are one trick ponies get paid much more. (Also, your darts analogy is off cause it has nothing to do with fighting while takedowns are)
@CM-ue6bi
@CM-ue6bi 7 лет назад
jurado1010 Broader skill set yes, but nowhere near a skilled at punching as boxers are. Nick Diaz would get demolished by any top 30 boxer in their weight class. Triathletes have to swim, bike and run but none of them make as much money as Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps who only do one. It's because Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps bring more spectators in. Same as Mayweather compared to any MMA fighter. No it isn't, takedowns have nothing to do with boxing. You do realise Floyd Mayweather is a boxer?
@jurado1010
@jurado1010 7 лет назад
+CM678 read again, i said takedowns have to do with FIGHTING, not boxing. I see your point of who brings in more money, but you have to understand what i'm saying too, i'm not saying nick is a better boxer, i'm saying he's a better fighter overall. How do you think floyd would do in an mma fight? Probably fine on his feet but if it hits the mat he's fucked (not that he'll ever fight in mma seeing how he cherry picks his opponents to keep his invincibility aura...)
@CM-ue6bi
@CM-ue6bi 7 лет назад
+jurado1010 I read your comment fine. I know you said fighting but Mayweather is a boxer, he doesn't need to learn to defend a takedown. Exactly the same way Nick doesn't need to learn to throw darts. I agree he is a better fighter overall, that is obvious. But your original comment suggests that Nick Diaz should be payed more simply because he has decided to be decent at a few things(boxing, BJJ, wrestling etc) rather than be incredible at one thing(boxing). Like I said, I love Nick but he is very jealous that Mayweather has literally made 500 times more money than himself.

Did Toney keep talking shit after he got choked out by Couture without throwing a single punch? I can't remember...
@brainer5457
@brainer5457 10 лет назад
Dashon Corra You idiot the ref stopped the fight because couture was about to choke him out. If the ref didn't stop it then fine let the guy loose consciousness and probably die. The ref knew toney couldn't get out of the choke. Anyways even if toney knows couture's 1 move out of 50 other submissions then fine let him practice his striking, if he does come back to the mma then the other fighters will show him 50 other submissions, ground and pound, clinches knee strikes. We'll throw everything in there.
@brainer5457
@brainer5457 10 лет назад
Dashon Corra And you think that'll make a difference? If couture can only go for takedowns, then your dude is screwed!!!!!!!!!! Ground always beats striking, if you don't have 3 years of training and experience in wrestling or jiu jitsu, it doesn't matter if you're a professional boxer, you're getting taken down and pounded to a pulp or submitted. Either way you would loose that fight and you would know MMA isn't the game you want to be playing.
@brainer5457
@brainer5457 10 лет назад
Dashon Corra But you're the one who is defending James Toney? That's why we make it a big deal. Because you keep defending Toney like he's a martial arts master. Toney isn't the kind of guy to take on someone like couture. Oh yeah he'll know couture will go for the takedown. He'll be ready for that. But couture is not stupid, instead of shooting in, he'll just wait for Toney to make a mistake. Toney needs to enter wrestling competitions to get experience. It's not enough learning just some lousy MMA techniques. He needs to train in other things than just his stand up. And what the hell are you talking about? Your logic is that if someone scares the shit out of couture that'll show how inferior MMA is? How do you know if couture is scared? Do you have mind reading powers? Can you sense it with your magical spell? Or are these just assumptions.

Boxing is a singular aspect of unarmed combat, mma is the sport of unarmed combat... A very talented boxer could beat a mediocre mixed martial artist I don't doubt that, but to compare someone like Jon Jones or Cain Valesquez to someone who is using only one form of attack is laughable and anyone who thinks a pure boxer would stand any more then a punchers chance against someone like that is seriously uneducated... The boxer may have the slight advantage in close quarters exchanges on the feet but that's it.. From long range what about kicks? Clinching? Takedowns? Jiu-jitsu? Cage control? All of these things are going in favour of the mixed martial artist, it's like someone fighting using only a sword against someone with two desert Eagles and a sniper rifle! The sheer amount of weapons the mma guy has will almost always outdo the one weapon the boxer has..
@gamessportsandmore3371

***** Wrong. MMA fighters excel in atleast two styles. Also u talk about JDS when he isnt only stand up contrary to popular belief, he just prefers stand up. Btw boxers dont know how to counter kicks thats bullshit. Do you even know how fast these kicks are? And you said imagine a boxer with takedown defense. Then they are no longer boxers plain flat and simple. Besides people complaining about the fact that UFC has too many rules. Thats what makes it difficult. You want no rules? Go back to the early days of MMA. Boxers got destroyed back then just as they would now.

Bas warned Tony like 1000 times. So did Ray Mercer - he warned him many times but Tony just focused on the idea that he would connect with most fighters probably 98% of the time. The opposite is true. If he connects there is no doubt he will knock someone out, but the chances of connecting are really low if someone wants to take you down. It shifts to like 5% chance to knock someone out. It's easier to close the distance and tie someone up.

MMA requires that you diversify your attack in order to win. If I speak Chinese better than you do but you are competent in 5 other languages as well why is your craft less technical than mine if we have different goals. MrKevin9856 mma striking is far more complex than boxing. You need to watch out for kicks, elbows, knees, traps where the opponent grabs & strikes you with kicks elbows, knee or punches you, leg kicks, sweeps, or him shooting in for a takedown or judo trips. You have kicking range, punching including spinning backfist range, trapping range & grappling range. Boxing only has 1 range and 1 set of weapons & no idea of his vulnerability to other strikes. Look at the diversity of striking weapons alone of Jon Jones, Cain Velasquez, Lyoto Machida, Anthony Pettis. No single dimensional boxer could compete in standup.

As someone who is a big fan of both, their is so much that goes in to just " throwin hands" than a lot of people give credit for when you are just boxing. However there is probably 10x more science in mma, I mean you have to be dumb not to agree with this, I means it is literally the mixed science of ALL aspects of fighting, granted boxing in mma is definitely different than just regular boxing, as goes for basically every martial art. But let's face it if a boxer fights a mma fighter 90% of the time the boxer is gonna get fucked up, same goes if a mma fighter boxed a boxer the mma fighters gonna lose. THEY ARE 2 DIFFERENT SPORTS! Bottom line and both deserve much respect.

Ray Mercer sounds very ignorant making remarks like "For one you gotta be in hella shape." MMA fighters fight at most 3-5 rounds, Boxers fight for at most 12 and they don't just "train for one thing." They train their footwork, their coordination, their speed and accuracy, evasiveness, stamina, etc. I'm a fan of both, but I've noticed that a lot of MMA (namely UFC) fans act like UFC fighters are the grandmasters of all Martial Arts when in truth a lot of them stem from BJJ or Wrestling backrounds and would get smashed on their feet against any Boxer, but as would a Boxer get submitted by just about any BJJ guy or Wrestler, but a Boxer with good takedown defense would be a hard opponent to beat. What a lot of you people don't understand is that the sport of Boxing is limited yes, but the fighting style, the Martial Art of Boxing is not. No Boxer would just allow himself to be taken down easily just because it's "outside of their style." However what matters isn't the style, but rather the fighters.

+brian sheehan Wrestling and the ground game takes a ton out of you. In boxing it is a strategy to tie up the opponent and make him carry your weight until the ref breaks you up. Imagine how much more you can sap your opponents energy when you are actually wrestling them and putting your weight on them with no break. I believe that is what Ray is speaking of. The training in wrestling, take down defense, and jiu jitsu is extremely taxing on your endurance, especially for someone that doesn't have the core strength developed yet. I thought Ray Mercer explained everything extremely well and I appreciate his view on it as a former boxing champion.
@TB473
@TB473 8 лет назад
Believe me. A boxer with no takedown experience can get taken down extremely easily. I suggest you step into a local decent high school wrestling teams room. You can be humbled very quickly. I wrestled and did some boxing training before. Using your whole body takes more energy then just throwing punches. It can truly be exhausting. Especially if your on bottom with someone on top of you. It really can wear you down

If I had to pick a boxer against an mma guy, would pick a knockout artist because he may only get one chance to make a statement. I would not pick a technical boxer because he won't be facing a boxer. I love both sports but yet I lean towards tactical combat. In regards to May weather , I think he would do terrible in mma, because his sideways stance would make it too easy for the mma guy to take him to the ground. Also he won't win on points in the sport of mma. I would use a boxer who can knock you out immediately with either hand. Just to let yous know . All through out history catch can wrestlers have always defeated boxers. Even the Great Muhammed Ali lost to a Catch Can Wrestler. Read the book Say Uncle. It has many it talks about many matches that took place where a boxer lost to a Catch Can Wrestler.

***** They'll still lose if they go toe to toe, even with amateur mma guys? is that why an old Mercer knocked out Tim Sylvia with his very first punch?lol Anyway MMA is far from a real fight, no biting, no eye gouging, all this rolling around on the floor would have your head kicked in within seconds in a real fight, the last thing you want in a real fight is laying on your back looking for an arm bar, MMA have changed over the years anyway to make it nothing like a real fight, like when Gerrard Gordeu kicking and stomping Teila Tuli and Kevin Rosier when they were down which you are now not allowed to do, that's more of the brutal reality of a real fight which they totally cut out, and also brought in rounds like boxing and make them stand up if there's a lack of action because people have paid to see a good fight, not 2 guys lay on top of each other for 30 mins and hoping for a easy pay day, don't get me wrong i used to love UFC, loved watching it up to part 6 with Tank Abbott and stuff but when they started changing rules its nothing like a real fight now...wonder how handy a Gracie arm bar will come in this situation when you're getting your face stomped on?lol ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ddzeuA0KTmk.html

Sylvia fought Mercer when it was UFC 115! how on earth is that early? it was UFC 60 when Matt hughes beat Royce showing you needed more than just Gracie jiu jitsu so im sure they knew they needed more than 1 skill set nearly 60 UFCs later, excelled in the dark days and couldn't compete with today's? Tim beat Andrei Arlovski! Well it wasn't a joke to boxing was it? he knocked out a guy, who knocked out Arlovski...with the very first punch thrown...that's 100% lol can't get any better than that, by a washed up grandad boxer..the only joke here is the former UFC champion who was knocked out in 9 seconds by a guy who doesn't even know what hes doing in the octagon lol Would Mayweather out strike Jose Aldo? how do i know till it happens lol could he out box Mayweather? of course not, could he out kick Mayweather with kicks to his shins? probably yes cos he wouldn't want to box Floyd and considering Mayweather doesn't do kicks to the shins. But then again if i wanted to a watch a shin kicking contest i can go to an infants playground to see such boring girly activity or even better watch Anderson Silva's last fight.

Goat Boat I'm pretty sure head kicks and spinning back fists aren't much of a problem or not a huge thing to adapt to, their hands are already in that area. sugarsaint Mma fighters train to condition themselves to absorb and take punishment and keep going and they can deal with a boxer's punch...unless they got glass chins. and um...taking hits counts as taking punishment.....and among the hits they take are kicks which are much more powerful than a punch and most of the time the kick's striking surface is the hard and conditioned rock hard shin bone among other striking surfaces and there's plenty mma fighters who can take many hits and deal with lots of punishment keep fighting and if they can take kicks, knees and elbows in addition to punches they can definitely take a boxer's punch. and a boxer is a trained knock out machine but so is a MMA fighter and also in addition that, a MMA fighter can also potentially break or dislocate a limb or joint, choke you out(hold a choke longer after unconciousness can lead to death) and can throw you like a rag dog, slam you, take you down etc. MMA fighters have so many ways to seriously wreck someone and possibly kill someone. and a boxer does hone his punching skills but MMA fighters hone their punching, kicking, elbowing, kneeing, takedown, throwing, slamming, and ground fighting skills. and there are MMA fighters are very good boxers and very good strikers in general that could stand with a boxer. I'm not saying necessarily straight hands. I mean pure striking as in using kicks, knees and elbows in addition to punches. and mma striking is steadily evolving and improving and has definitely since the older days of mma. and there are mma fighters who are former amateur boxers and former pro boxers and some who are have backgrounds in other things too.

What's your point? That because Lesnar had a combination of fantastic wrestling and freak athleticism the ufc isn't legit? You can't sit there and say Lesnar isn't legit, Couture is an Olympian. my favourite thing is theyre talking punching power boxing gloves vs mma mits... bas rutten is the guy who set the record straight back in 2004 i believe about the differences between the two. where a tv show set up training dummies for him to hit bare knuckle, then with 4oz, then wearing 16oz boxing gloves. the difference was HUGE. like 600ft/lb with gloves and like 950ft/lb with 4oz and only a small difference bare knuckle of like 1000ft/lb

You can take an athlete/champion boxer like Wladimir Klitschko; teach him ju jitsu, wrestling, kicking, takedown defense, etc. and turn him into a championship caliber MMA fighter. BUT you could never turn A Cain Velasquez into a championship caliber boxer under no circumstance. That's the difference, boxing champions are born.
@Trentberkeley86

Sure he could. Anyone with good training and technique can be. Werdum is a world bjj champ and he's 6'4". Struve is 7 feet and he's good on the ground if you can even get them there. That's the strength of martial arts, anyone can do it.

man the arguement is stupid, todays boxers are sloppier than mma fighters with their standup, shawn porter vs devon alexander was the worst dispay of boxing i ever seen, holding and sloppy ass punches yet theyre champs! pac man is even a wild puncher, there is a short number of fighters who really have hands these days! i boxed and studied mma, i watched paulie vs judah, these dudes hardly touched eachother, boxing is not as good as mma in a street fight, when you get grabbed in boxing, you stay that way until the ref breaks you, in real life youll get slammed, in mma if you get grabbed you get slammed! in boxing if you get knocked dwn, you have a 10 count, in real life if you get knocked dwn ur gonna get pounded on the ground, in mma if u get knockd dwn you get pounded on the ground, in boxing if someone has better hands than u the fight is basically over, in real life if someone has better hands theyll try to grab and take u down, in mma if someone has better hands you can grab and take them down!! its not rocket science to see that mma is much better for a street fight, boxing is only one aspect of fighting, what happens when in a street fight the boxer cant ko his enemy, and the guy grabs and takes him out his element!! mma is the art of mastering not just ya hands but its the art of mastering ur entire body!! maybe in thr early days of the ufc it was just barbaric! mma fighters have crisp standup now and alot more skill to go along with it, a good striker mma fighter with ground game will take out a skilled boxer anyday, why? because the mma fighter has more tools and weapons! plz stop having this arguement cus its so stupid, common sense will tell anyone a man who can use his hands, elbows, feet and grappling is way more equipped for a street fight than a guy who just uses his hands..

@autonomousmale4253

+Jonathan Lechan Just FYI you're wrong. Real fighting has no rules whatsoever, potentially no time to prepare, a random location, and there's genuine emotions involved, plus raw motivation to beat the other person up, maybe potentially a life or death situation and other people could join in as well. MMA still has rules even if it is significantly less restrictive than boxing so it's not really "real", hence it's referred to as a sport.
@jblechan
@jblechan 8 лет назад
Autonomous Male it's more real than boxing that's for sure.
@autonomousmale4253
@autonomousmale4253 8 лет назад
Yes well done, have a cookie. The thing is that boxing is one of the most practical if not the most practical striking style. And the most skilled boxers are seen in boxing and that's why from lots of people's perspective boxing is better. Just like a wrestling fan might prefer to watch pure greco roman wrestling than UFC. Mixing everything up/ having less restrictions brings drawbacks such as each skillset the fighter has is a lower level of skill generally. Constantly saying UFC is better because its more real is the obvious thing to say and it's getting really old now. Some people don't want to see real fighting, they want to see high quality techniques and strategies. Grappling someone in MMA that likes to punch isn't exactly rocket science, but boxing strategies go very in depth. At the end of the day most MMA fans I speak to know nothing about fighting and just want the cheap and easy thrill of seeing someone getting their face smashed in (which shouldn't even be something to enjoy looking at and it can't be compared to watching the beauty of a one punch KO). What most of them tend to say about MMA shows they know very little. Many will disagree but the smaller minority of people that know about fighting will agree.
@jblechan
@jblechan 8 лет назад
Autonomous Male the most skilled boxers might be seen in boxing but the most skilled fighters are seen in MMA. Just cause punching is the most practical form of striking doesn't mean it's the best or the most effective. You really think mixing skills up means lowering other skills? First of all that's not true in the least, especially since prettty much all MMA fighters are already experts in one style even before training in MMA, and even if it was true, that lower skill in one area is better than someone else's non-existent skill in the same area. Grappling someone who wants to punch isn't rocket science? That sounds like a pretty good strategy to me in doing something that's better than your opponent, and grappling just an FYI requires a lot of skill and strategy. People also don't want to see running around a ring for 1 rounds. You obviously haven't talked to many MMA fans or at least real MMA fans. At least if they get hit constantly the fight is stopped thereby reducing the chance of long term damage. Most people who understand fighting know that allowing someone to take a 10 count and get punched some more is worse. What's so beautiful about that? Obviously you've been talking to the wrong people.

I would like to see a boxer in his prime be tested in this Octagon. It would have to be a certain type of boxer. Not a guy like Mayweather, who is the type of boxer that outsmarts his opponent and therefore only excels against other boxers. More a type like Mike Tyson or Sergey Kovalev. Because it's nice when you are a master in takedowns, but when a boxer like Tyson or Kovalev, with great power and superb delivery would land just one punch, the fight would already be over. A boxer can knock out any non-boxer with just one punch. Especially when he would wear MMA gloves. It's not even fair. Mike Tyson in his prime would knock out Jon Jones within 10 seconds in the Octagon. Fists are so much faster than kicks. Nobody can take down another man as fast as Mike Tyson could hit another guy in the face. Boxing is the fundament of all fighting. Because fists are the fastest human weapons available. No wonder boxers also have the best reflexes of all athletes.

@naughtybynature999

I think even a pure boxer would do well in MMA (as long as he ups his grappling game), it doesnt take a lot to knock somebody out. the fundamentals of boxing would help, because a lot of MMA fighters don't know striking fundamentals, like defense controlling distance turning an opponent, timing etc. Actually if a boxer simply relies on his punch, he gonna be taking a chance gettin in the octogon. thats what happend with james toney when he fought couture, toney thought he could ko him, was lookin for that punch. couture shot at him so low that toney couldnt even throw a punch. and toney wasn't athletic enough to scramble out the way, went down and it was over.

Boxing is a way more complicated and dangerous sport. This is a fact. Boxing takes more time to learn. I spar with MMA fighters who will tell you its extremely hard to learn the cuts, angles, and moves of boxing. Same for the boxers who spar with them and make fun of them, I tell them 'MMA and boxing are 2 different sports, We are all fighters, respect each other.' The facts are... Its harder to transfer to boxing, boxing is more dangerous, and takes more time to learn.

I picture a bunch of white frat boys going "Lets friggin train ufc bro, friggin awsome " and the other one going "fuck yea bro ! just bleed !" lmao. Like both sports though, mma for the more realistic fighting and ground game . And boxing because of the strategies and science behind it and the elite level striking. There are very few elite strikers in mma with actual credentials while there are alot of elite grapplers.

Let the foolish mma fans have their fun. We all know where the highest caliber fighters are. Making the real money with guys like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. MMA fighters don't have what it takes to be where they are. They haven't accomplished a fraction of what these legends have. The sport is not as demanding. The talent pool is not as deep. Anderson Silva is 33-6. Fedor is 35-4. Guillermo Rigondeaux (2 time Olympic gold medalist in boxing) has 475 amateur fights with 12 losses. In the pros he is 16-0 with 10 knockouts. Floyd mayweather is 49-0 , 23 of which were TITLE FIGHTS. Honestly tho, Fedor does stand out. He beat a lot of great fighters.. but the average boxer is light years better than the average mma fighter. That is not even up for debate.

Steven Larsson Wasn't always that way. Only thing that changed was because people didn't want to see the hugely drawn out matches, the 5 min rounds isn't a capability thing- its an exhibition device designed to force fighters to put stronger effort rather than the near total conservation that for non technical fans made the fights boring. Personally I with they kept the 10 min first round and then did 5 min rounds unlimited after that. Can't recall if it was Pride or K1 or pancreas that did which of what.
