Finally somebody realized how to do it. They do a ton of money selling everything but fuel, even to people doing only quick breaks, so to people doing a long stop, it's like shooting fish in a barrel.
@larsoleruben
@larsoleruben 3 года назад
Exactly. They have realized that selling food, coffee, etc will make a super nice extra profit to the electricity sales they also do. And with batteries they can purchase power at night when it is cheap, and sell it during the daytime for with a huge profit. Seems only Circle K is in for it. In denmark we see Circle K and OK doing the same.

$/hour = visits/hour * $/visit. Charging takes too long and they don't get many visits, too short and people don't spend much. Wonder where the sweet spot is and if they would be discouraged from installing the next crazy fast charging technology. I'm guessing about 15 min charging is about right, long enough for people to grab a coffee and a bite, but keeps the turnover high.
@TransientTRP
@TransientTRP 3 года назад
When I had a gas car, I would fill up and go. Almost never did I go inside the store. When I'm fast charging my EV, I'm wandering around looking at whatever is nearby. If there's a store like this, I can guarantee I'm going inside and looking around.
@rupe53
@rupe53 3 года назад
@@msmith3395 ... I think your 15 minute analogy for charging is about right for charging. Comparing that to a "gas only stop" on a road trip I just finished, it takes almost 15 minutes to gas up, restroom break, and grab a snack. (2 or more people in the car) OTOH, add in those tables (inviting people to take a break) is a deal changer, and probably jumping the average time up by another 10 minutes. This is where marketing a service will win out and people will spend more money. It's a win for a business in the long run.
@davidshipp623
@davidshipp623 2 года назад
Yes the great thing about EV’s is the rest break and the fuel break become the same time. It would actually be good to have some slower chargers as well in other parking places, so that those staying for a whole meal have a bit more time. As someone else posted in Bjorn’s eTron GT video, range anxiety is becoming eat anxiety.

Interesting. A Gas station company not treating EV charging as an afterthought. In UK closest we have is Gridserve who have started opening EV only charging stations with the weather cover, amenities etc. Norway is much further down the vehicle electrification route so you would expect gas station companies to have come to the 'adapt or die' realisation. I can't wait in 10 years to see them rushing to stay in business. We also have Circle K but all them here stopped selling fuel. This is the way to go. If need to build new or just rebuild it can be done. Though many places already had a rebuild in the last 10 years so by time EVs are everywhere in US it will be time to refresh again.

It is funny how quickly things change. This station is next to a brand new section of the road. They spent 4 years building it. When the road build was launched, they quickly anounced they would build a gas station there. At that time it was gas only. A little time later, circle k wanted to also add chargers. But local politicians did not want to give up more space. And now, a few years later, this is what we have! Talk about a total turn around! Also Bjørn - the hill you went up on too see the roof, will have a "MAX" burger joint eventually.

Not really practicle. It would require industrial ventilation and filtration systems because tires produce a large amount of particulates as they wear down that are not healthy to breath in. All that tire rubber mostly goes into the air as dust rather than the road from the friction. While not nearly as bad as exhaust fumes from ICE vehicles, all that tire rubber dust being breathed in by the station attendants would not be good for their health. A large solar canopy that covers the whole lot would be a healthy compromise.

Nice catch. I predict we'll still call them gas stations, just like we have cigarette lighter jacks in the car, but no cigarettes. There are a few more sayings, we used to say in the 70s, 80s, that still carried on, but the device or function is gone... cell phones now are more used as a computer and rarely to make phone calls... laptops rarely are used on your lap now... Bookmarks on your browser, came from real bookmarks for books, to hold your page so you can return later. Computer tabs and folders, were from real paper folders that had tabs on them. Add another 20-40 years, nobody will know why a website is saved as a BOOKmark.. There's no book to mark.... Keyboards may disappear and be replaced by dictation.

Here in Oztralia we have 20% of homes with solar on their roofs and under 1% of new cars being EVs. When you say this is the futrue, it’s like a Jetsons cartoon for us.

Hi Bjorn, thank you so much for this focus of the new era energies stations. I was wondering if a sufficent space for an ev + a big trailer/camper to charge will ever exist. I guess it will be possible in this new station design. Like to see many more in France and in Europe !
@davidmichie
@davidmichie 3 года назад
Norway already has some of the lowest emission electricity in Europe thanks to hydro. There might be 30-50kW in solar on those two roofs and on a rainy day would probably be generating less than 10kW.

Stuff like this makes me even happier that I moved to Norway some 14 years ago in my 20s. Hope they start popping up everywhere here or at least where there's more traffic.

Looks great. I also like the "gas station" layout. Less clumsy than chargers in a straight line imo. Maybe in the future there will be wireless chargers in the ground if the output becomes good enough. Anyways I hope these kinda charging stations becomes the standard.

The concept is great and well thought out. What I think is important: Every CCS outlet must have the same basic power and voltage characteristics with load balancing among at least 4-8 outlets, because otherwise people will start arguing in a way like: "Why is your e-UP 'blocking' the 350 kW outlet although it only gets 35 kW?! My Taycan needs to charge with 270 kW now and the only thing left is the 50 kW triple charger! Go move your e-Up to that thing!". I think the alpitronic Hyperchargers are not optimal for that, since they only have max. 2 CCS outlets between which to balance, but in the case of this new CircleK-station they are applied "correctly". I think the modular concept inside the charger (X times 75 kW) is best for stand-alone charging spots, but as soon as 4 or more stalls are involved, the Tesla or IONITY concept with centralized "cabinets" and connected dumb plug holders is more flexible.

@@zetadimensions yeah that's true sadly !! we do have some government incentives in Canada but I believe they are far less generous than what most of the European countries can enjoy. It's not like there is "no" demand in my country; I live in a city of 1 million people and I see several EV's on the road whenever I drive around town; they are coming but slowly.

They now have to open their network to non-Norwegian or non-Nordic users. Their app is not available in my country’s AppStore and the few apps/cards I have don’t work on circleK. Gridserve in the UK at least managed to add a credit/debit card reader so anyone could charge their car even if it’s slightly more expensive. 👍

This is how charging stations should be. Here where I live in the us they treat ev owners especially Tesla drivers like 2nd class citizens. They put the chargers as far away as possible like they don’t want to use them. Here in Michigan the Tesla chargers are all at grocery stores called Meijer’s the Tesla chargers are literally as far away from the doors as possible. I don’t understand why they do this.
@dennislyon5412
@dennislyon5412 3 года назад
If you put them closer to the doors - you know who will park there, right? Just look at the single EVgo chargers at WM in Ohio. Say thanks to Meijers for their forward thinking!

Bjorn, this battery pack in a container is to address peak charging issue. Probably electricity provider does not deliver power to cover all charges and if there are all in usage batteries can balance missing power and charge when stations are not fully utilised. I saw this solution in Poland.
