Cut for show. Finish...for DOUGH. Yes, removing scratches from car paint is a hugely important part of paint correction. But it's in the refining stage -- where patience, technique and focus must course through a detailer's brain and body and manifest a result -- that the true potential of a car's paint can be realized.
A car that is refined properly evokes emotion -- turns heads. Makes people say...wow.
The problem is, I never knew what polishing technique to use. Medium pad, soft pad, firm pad? Fast arm movements. Slow. Less product. More? The options are endless, and the nuances are often overwhelming.
The problem with paint correction is....there's no "Standard Operating Procedure." Every paint is different. BUT FEAR NOT!!! I BRING GOOD NEWS:)
In this video, I'll show you a time-saving trick that's about as close to an SOP...with consistent results...that I've ever found.

Nice Job Man!! I had totally been using those techniques both the faster movements to finish and using very little product and even just residue on the pad to finish out. Conversely, the Purple KC pad and MicroCut slow, steady and pressure also finish out SUPER nice! Very interesting techniques that work! I'm glad you had Andy explained some things....I'm always trying to find ways to explain what we do because our polishing technique can look very different than what many see on RU-vid, so I find myself trying to explain the whys and hows. We tend to break "rules" all the time and find new ways to achieve the finish we want. We also understand that there are so many variables that come into play with each vehicle and situation....only experience can teach you how to deal with what one may encounter. I find that everyone has their own "style" or "technique" that they have learned over the years that works for them. Awesome video and explanations man!

thanks Phil! and last time i checked...once someone thinks they have it all figured out, life humbles them haha. I had this crazy "sticky" jaguar paint from 1997 and it was the hardest to figure out i've ever seen. i had jason rose walk me through some options but it was just a real bear. Every time I polished it would leave these cirlce/half moon marks on the edge of my section. needless to say the technique in this video did NOT help lol...but that's what makes detailing fun, always learning and even if we don't know, we know how to experiment in the moment and make adjustments.

Heck yeah! That makes me smile. The last technique with slow arm movement is your "surest bet" for awesome clarity every time. Keep pads clean and I like to swap out a new pad for every panel.

@@nicksdragon6929 it's not ideal for finishing to be honest. I would say if that's your cleaning method you'll want a lot of pads. Clean pads are everything if you're striving for the best finish. But you can play around with it. The rupes brush is okay, but I like it more with microfiber or wool as opposed to foam.

Great video thanks! Completely unrelated question, how did you export your sound in this video? Somehow your voice channel (and buffer) comes out mostly on my rear left speaker, I have own my surround sound system (5.1) for 2 years, and this video is the very first time that this has happened. The music comes out from my front speakers and slightly back speakers.

Reminds me a bit of how they teach the Optimum Hyper system. Leaving the compound residue, trusting the system more than managing it, etc. I've always been kind of a rebel when it comes to faster polisher speed and arm movement, so this is right up my alley. The single biggest "secret" to finishing soft paint for me has been soft high quality towels, residue control and working very clean. I've been super obsessed with the rotary lately, and I already have M3, so trying the micro cut purple pad might get me back into that DA life. Thanks! Dope production on this one too. 👍👌✌

Thanks man! I feel like leaving h9 residue and going to m3 just didn't make any sense to me...and the fact that it works blew my mind. I've been grinding my purple pads pretty hard though, and if I had one critique of koch it would be their pads are great but seem to degrade quickly compared with other foam I've used...so lately, I feel like the consistency of results has gone down a bit when using purple pad after h9. However, the speed 6, slow arm movement, work m3 until translucent technique is money money. It's the koch system too so it must be them crazy Germans having figured something out haha

I've been doing more rotary work as well. It brings a gloss that da doesn't match, although I'm not sure why. I still feel more comfortable using a da/microfiber to get edges of panels

@@HawkProDetailing Thanks for the info! I'm ordering some pads! Rotary is alot of fun, I started using it with small pads and extensions to really dial in tight spots and gradually started using it for everything. It cuts fast and it really can finish better when everything is working together. I've been using Xtreme Solutions LVR 496 a lot recently and it's been amazing, especially finishing finnicky paint. Any special tips to extend the life of the pads you've found? I don't like flooding and pad washers personally, I basically use the Apex method, (a spray of cleaner, soft detail brush and blow out after every section.) I guess I should skip the spray of cleaner for the Andy technique. How often does he swap out that pad when he's finishing?

Finally someone that understand the speed + rpm's rule ..this technique is actually from the CNC area, milling and turning.. I never understood why most detailers use low rpm's + fast feed instead of the other way around.. it doesn't make any sense.. as a miller if I wanted a shiny and smooth surface it was with more rpm's and less advance. the mathematical formula of advance x rpm's over the tool diameter, is perfectly applicable in this profession as in a dentist, in a quarry, in a carpentry among other professions with this concept. Congratulations for the video where you explain the 100% correct way how to make the perfect finish in the correct and efficient way and not in the huge waste of time that many do.

Nick...Thanks for all the advice you provide. I'm doing my first polish on the MIL's new car before coating it. I bought this H9 & M3 with pad combo you suggested. Will either of them stain any plastic or rubber trim if it gets on? Wondering if I need to tape it all off or not. Using the M3 only this 1st go around after claying it since paint is new.

Honestly you can buy blue paint tape at wal mart or ace or just go to o Reilly and see if they have tape. Even the paint tape from these stores doesn't pull of paint especially on new car. Sometimes it leaves a line when you remove tape, but it comes off with a quick polish pass. Just make sure to clean your pads frequently between sections and having a number of pads is helpful...I started in paint correction with one pad for a car not knowing what I was doing...now I prefer about 10 to swap out in between car sections like one door, swap pad, next door one pad, then swap etc. Don't overthink taping. I would tape anywhere you're afraid the polisher might bump into or get sling. So I tape rubber around windows, I tape emblems, I'll tape the plastic around a side mirror. If you get staining trying isopropyl alcohol wipe OR your degreaser/all purpose cleaner FULL STRENGTH on a towel then rub spot. Jason rose advice I saw on a video is to use your plastic dressing like a meguiars hyper dressing on all plastics first...when compound sling gets on there it wipes off easy cause the surface is "greasy" or whatever, don't quote me on the terminology lol. Interesting concept but that's more around sling (I think) than polish on pad staining it if you get sloppy with your passes. 75 percent defect removal tops should be the goal. Do not go after deep scratches, especially as a newbie, it's just not worth it in comparison to the value of the car and your experience level and you are the only person who will see it. The goal for you is just a nice shiny car from 5 feet away that is properly polished and prepped to take that coating. Enjoy!

When it comes to piano trim, 3 inch purple pad with m3. Slow slow arm movement, speed 6 on my rupes 75e, a little bit of pressure. Work it until you see the surface through the oily polish and check it. It works great I promise

They scratch super easy. There is a Ford TSB for it. The process is to use 3M Perfect It finishing polish and a foam pad on a polisher. It’s super easy to polish. I use a little bit of Sonax Perfect Finish with a light polishing pad and light pressure usually.

Would the arm speed and machine speed (6) change based on temperatures like for a mobile detailer outdoors on a 90 degree sunny day?

Speed 6 is my go to. I would say just start playing around with the technique immediately so you can figure out the ins and outs. Thay way when you run into issues you will begin to have the muscle flexed of how to work around it. When my purple pads start to degrade I notice the finish being impacted. Often going to a 3 inch purple pad gives me more control and I get the clarity I want. Worst case, speed 6 and a little pressure and very slow arm movement and you will love what m3 does for ya:)

Interesting...might have to try that. So how many MF pads do you use with that? Just the one and keep blowing it out or do you eventually get a new one after say 3 full panels?

I swap a new pad every panel but I'm just OCD like that. Every paint is different but this method works super well on most paint. If not... I do the speed 6 method, even pad pressure with 3 inch purple pad and m3 and because the small pad is like a scalpel I get mirror finish. Not super efficient but always works even on finicky black paint

Great video , im having trouble doing paint correction myself i dont know if my car has to much protection as i always apply wax , spray coatings but i use like strio wash from adams and still cant get a good result still beadin , what product strong i can use for strip wax and sealants? Also i have the chemical guy polisher 5 inch with the foam pads , i also have wool pad from meguiars and the adams 3 inch polisher with micro and foam pads and i tried every combination with different compunds i have meguiars , carpro and chemical guys and i dont know if its my techbique but cant get rid of the swirls . Any tips appreciated thanks

Scratches are one thing. A straight line, that seems random and deep. "Swirls" or "spider webs" that seem a little more consistent are another. I like microfiber and a compound to get the swirls out. Lots of technique variables in that step but you will be left with a new pattern introduced in this step. As in, you eliminated car wash swirls...and you've introduced a tighter web of what people call "DA haze" ....those are less deep in the paint so you would then polish THOSE out using the techniques outlined. You could follow the instructions and products I recommend in this video or attend a training. Get a body shop hood and just mess around though before you start hammering on your own car lol

So yeah , you can also clean up anything left with the P6. Let the Wax set up. Wipe out with a slightly damp cloth. Apply whatever sealant you like. M302 is good. I use it with a ton of different combinations. Chase any of the JesCar , Rupes, Menzerna most of your favorite cutting compounds. Add a dab of it with Griots Correction Cream , I did all kinds of crazy stuff with it last year. Use it with Xtreme Solutions 367 ice. I mean together on the same pad at the same time. It works great. M3 is a staple in my stuff now along with Xtreme Solutions stuff I use. Basically add M3 to any diminishing compound or finishing polish and you’ll get a better finish.

Can this compound and polish be used on all color cars ? If yes , should i compound the entire car and leave the residue and then start polishing the entire car or should I compound a small area and then polish that place alone and then Move to next panel for compounding and polishing ?

Both are fantastic on most cars yes. I don't like the idea of doing the whole car this way because once the compound gets caked on there it won't play nice with this method. So I would go panel by panel. I prefer h9 with a rotary

This is actually a very old technique, learned a very similar process back in the 80s from a guy that worked at my dads shop. I believe he moved back to Japan and opened his own company , he was kinda of crazy and smoked like a chimney but man that man was so skilled .

Bro I'm sure there is a better compound out there. But this is all we use. M3 and purple pad have proven themselves on black paint over and over. Will we use something else one day? Perhaps. But this line up is legit

M3 I’ve been using for the last year now. Along with other compounds M3 is one of the top finishing polishes you’ll find. Sometimes as you see in the video it’s all you’ll need.

It's called GRIP to cut and SLIP to polish. Grip and Slip baby. That technique is very similar to the Jab technique I use for a mow down correction technique with short movements then long then back to regular to finish out. You can do low arm speed less passes or faster arm speed more passes or a mixture of whatever you want. shining shoes is mainly created by fast rubbing with some product but not too much and no pressure or light pressure. the same applies to paint most often. I still love to finish with a rotary at very low rpm like 350-500 rpm than use a DA. paint correction/ polishing is a game of adaption. rehearsed routines lack the flexibility to adapt - bruce lee. so always have an open mind to other ideas/methods and think outside the box. Like me using deburred wool and jewelling polish to correct swirls or paint dry spray on painted plastic bumpers but also on metal panels in small areas. keeps the wool pad moist and prevents clumping so the fibres can keep working.

Great video bro! I wonder how 3D one would work as it can be used as compound or polish. I wonder if you leave it on the paint without wiping off for polishing step since it is a diminishing abrasive and stays lubricated long. That is not a bad idea to try using 3D one. Correct with a wool or microfiber pad, leave it on and change to a finishing pad maybe put 2-4 dots and polish. That would make a good video...🤔 Is good to think outside the box.

Amen Darren! This is madness. I don’t even use diminishing abrasives anymore. Ain’t got no time for that. I want my products working at their peak the whole cycle and I want to short cycle my machine to reduce heat swelling the paint and hiding defects. I bet I can cut and polish a car faster than this dude could with this technique and an hour head start lol

You forgot to mention, STOP USING TAPE! My first and second polishes I used tape, accidentally bumped it unknowingly and there were always ticks left behind no matter how many times I blew the pad out! Looked glossy and better than unpolished, but Little hair scratches everywhere! So irritating!

Not sure I understand. Are you saying that masking tape is what causes ticks and scratches? Thats a first hearing this. How do you suggest protecting surfaces then without using tape?

@@MrBod4life yeah I was using the “delicate” version of scotch masking tape assuming it had less glue residue to leave behind. Regardless, when I hit it with my machine, I think it picked up residue up and was leaving hairline scratches anywhere I used that pad.

@@MrBod4life try kamikaze kamoi tape only available in the US through Esoteric or 3M precision. Those are the 2 I use when I have to tape an area that I will be polishing over as opposed to might bump into

I don't think its the tape honestly. I use regular blue painters tape from Home Depot and the only time I ever encountered a problem is when you lift the edge of the tape and it might hit the adhesive. So you may be spreading that onto the paint. Has only happened a few times to me

nice video!! You need to show that guy who "doesn't care for detailers" how to use the correct lighting in order to film paint to show the correct paint correction process. That guy is forever famous for ALWAYS saying it's impossible to show the paint on camera which doesn't make sense since just about every other detailer is able to do it.

Haha I hear you. Finishing paint is tricky as hell-- the speed 6 method with m3 and purple pad, with slow arm movement, is the best results with no technique change I've found 🥳

Bruhh...hyper twins sounded great as a concept. Haha I could never get them to work though. People swore by hyper polish but I didn't know anybody using hyper compound. Opti is solid don't get me wrong

@@HawkProDetailing I've only done personal vehicle so never needed compound. For quick 1 step that is 80 to 90 percent corrected without taping and no worries about trims...hyper polish is awesome.

You gotta try the purple pad/m3 combo with that technique man:) it's a system from zee Germans. I don't feel the paint warm up at all. Like i said it's my go to when I can't get piano trim dialed in
