Yep! So USA had THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY since Sandy Hook? Well Australia for example hasn't had THREE in the nation's entire history. Funny that isn't it. We notably do not have the death penalty or easy access to guns, both things which change the perceived societal value of human life and turn human bodies into expendable rage targets instead of living , breathing autonomous people with their own hopes and desires that have intrinsic value. 1. Drop the death penalty 2. Slowly phase down access to guns in tandem with authorities cracking down on *illegal* gun posession so that criminal groups can essentially be locked up for half their lives if they are found stockpiling firearms. Then the somewhat legit claims of good people needing weapons in the home will be far less legit and people will have more confidence that people need to be very specially trained and have extremely sound mental health to own an appropriately low powered weapon with a very small amount of ammunition

When Brianna said, "she hates covering stories like this," it broke my heart, and when her coworker said, "one thing I can promise you, you going to have to do it again." It's sad that we have to be expecting another school shooting like this because some of these parents refuse to get the help their kid needs. There are so many children who are overlooked at home and in school with mental health disorders, these problems are distressing to children and disrupt their ability to function well at home, and in school, or in other social situations. Parents need to pay attention to their kid's behavior, mood swings, and for the love of the universe, talk to your kids, if there's anything bothering them you have a chance to address the situation before it gets out of hand. You are the parent(s) and your responsibility is to take care of your kids. It's good that the parents are being held accountable for their actions as well as that child. The last school shooting in the UK was in Dunblane in 1996. A certain Andy Murray was one of the schoolkids that survived. If a minor person shoots and kills someone with a gun that belongs to their parents. And the only reason the shooter had access to the weapon is because the parents didn't lock them up, than the parents need to be sitting right next to their kid, facing identical charges. Being too lazy to lock up dangerous weapons needs to be dealt with in the seriousness that it deserves. It's willingly putting the world at risk because of one's own negligance. Its the same as a drunk person killing some innocent traveler on the road, negligent homicide. Same should go for guns.

As a retired teacher, I can definitely relate. We drilled every year and it was always in the back of our minds that this might happen. I can definitely state that my former admins would've checked his backpack, locker, and car if he had one. So it really angered me to hear that they ignored the teachers' warning signs and didn't follow through. It's just damn stupid and horrible.. and heartbreaking.
I wouldn’t want to be a teacher right now. You are expected to teach, be a health provider, police, etc. Those teachers that jumped in front of students at Sandy Hook or were locked in closets singing songs to the small children as the shooting went over the loud speaker is unfathomable. I watched the transition last year. I had two in elementary school. In those grades they call them, “lockdown drills.” We live next door to Parkland so that was already in my mind as I sent my oldest off to Jr/Sr High where is is much more prevalent. I was use to my children no longer telling me about the drills because that was their norm now. Then my oldest came home and told me new policy at the older kids schools. They are no longer cheeky and call them “lockdown drills.” They call them what they are, “active shooter drills.” In my kids 2-story school they strategically sit larger kids, boys towards the door. They are told to start pushing everything in front of the door to block it while the other kids start exiting the windows. Even on the second floor, my child was taught hang/drop from window because they will not die from that. They might break a limb, but they could very likely die from being shot. It’s sad to be fortunate to have A.) a girl and B.) to have her be of smaller frame/stature. Sadly, it’s even sadder to be happy we have five girls because girls don’t fit the description of a school shooter. What has this world come to?
@@cherylbritt7227 I wholeheartedly agree with your msg. Profoundly, in fact. But unfortunately, with this particular topic, it's not, "what has this world coming to?" Instead it's, "this is what America has come to." 🙁
I can’t believe these admins didn’t act. My admins would’ve had the police there and things would be locked down. I hate that I have to do active shooter drills with my ten year old students. Exactly, how do school administrators and counselors ignore it? According to social media related to Ethan, students wrote that they tried in vain to tell school administration. Some students didn’t even go in on Tuesday. These kids know what’s up; the selfish administration clearly doesn’t and it frustrates a lot of people.

I see comments of other 20 something year olds saying, "I'm glad I'm old enough that I didn't experience this in school". But just think as we approach 30 and people start to have families, you will be sending your little ones to school if not the very same ones these tragedies happen in. Unfortunately this is a revolving door it doesn't just stop because you're no longer in elementary, high school or college. People need to look out for one another in America more, this could've been stopped at so many stages.

There was a SWAT standoff across my 7 year old daughters elementary school just this year, where the man apparently had fired shots before ending his life. The school went on soft lockdown and my wife and I were in a panic because we had no idea what was going on. I immediately thought of Sandy Hook. Just the thought of losing a child like this is just unfathomable.

It's ok to cry and smear your makeup. Wish we saw the raw human emotions more often. TY for being human with us. I don't like to cry alone.
@ACC I also think a video of an unarmed black man being slowly killed in public by a police officer had something to with it too. Especially when it was found out that nothing would've been done about it save for that video. Think of all the time, trouble and lives that could've been saved if someone took the time to understand why some people started kneeling instead of cancelling them? Many tragedies could be avoided if people took the time to listen to each other.

She is absolutely right! The signs of some children’s behavior is noticeable at school. If there were enough mental health workers within the school they could observe children that require some support. If educators within the school witness abnormal behavior from a student then it could be reported to a mental health team that works in each school. The problem is American schools is much more focused on distributing $$ each year to other things and not something so important such as the need for mental health workers. The lack of resources and funds for such an important reason is troubling. Funds should go towards increasing mental health workers in school settings!

Brianna you are an amazing person. The sacrifice you give to provide the news is awesome. Hug who you love and rely on them to help deal with these horrors you face.
The root cause isn't isolation & disconnection - that happens everywhere in the world. The reason mass shootings happen in the US far more than anywhere else is easy access to guns.
There is easy access to guns in Switzerland. It’s definitely something within American culture. The kids who commit these acts clearly have issues with all of the things the Sandy Hook mother mentioned. The solution isn’t simply one thing-it’s multifaceted. Swiss kids are raised to learn how to use guns. They have had ZERO school shootings. There is not one simple answer because comparisons of Switzerland to America is apples to oranges but it’s the best comparison because they too, are a nation that respects firearms. Within their culture it’s seen as a high responsibility tool much like driving a motor vehicle for example
Yes the root cause is easy access to anything.. So, like the incident in Wisconsin, the media places the blame on the suv and not the individual.. But, ok, I'll play along..let's ban all suv's and guns !
I own guns. My father owned guns. I learned to handle a gun safely as a child. All my friends, growing up in Maine owned guns and knew from an early age how to use them. We never had a problem because of guns. The problem is society and the fact that we're raising a generation of weaklings. I buy guns in order to defend my home and the very right to own them if need be.
Does it very touching and human story. The mother of the Sandy Hook child has all of my empathy. she is absolutely correct we must be more civil and more social with one another.

The GOP only cares about winning elections and power. Gun violence is meaningless to them because their base are all 2nd amendment nuts. Abortion rights are meaningless to them because their Christian/ Evangelical are against it. It’s all about winning elections
I am sorry S AVANT but your hopes are empty. The GOP will answer gun crime with a demand for more guns being held by the "good people"; not acknowledging that lots of good people do stupid things on bad days and when you have a gun that stupid thing is likely to be shooting someone else or yourself (there are about 40,000 gun suicides a year and the same number of gun crime deaths). Until the American political/social/health system starts caring and believing people can be good rather than telling everyone that they have to look after themselves and that they would only misuse any extra money they got, there will be no change.

Mental illness is the root problem. Loneliness. Isolation. She said it in the video. The warning signs were there. If someone drives an suv through a christmas parade killing women and children is it the SUVs fault? Parents shouldve done better.

As a parent that last statement John just made to Brianna just hurt. Even if we know she will cover it again very soon,John saying it like that just hurt
I had a horrible childhood . My dad didn't realize my mom was already married with kids who abandoned her 3 kids and would abandon me. Was bullied by a neighbor for 10 years , mad fun of at school how I dressed .I guess in todays world , would kill those people .But I didn't. I am 64 now training for my 10th Ironman race, did 35 yrs with the USPS and see todays kids in life as soft . In fact parents , teachers can't and wont do to kids what was done to me to keep me straight and strong . And when I was a kid, guns and that culture was not as it is today . We used our fists in school. I did beat up that bully after 10 years, not kill him. We cant change people , but like cars , we did change them to make them saver to drive , along with laws on the road. Time to change gun laws and access to them and then the gun culture will be changed which will save lives . That is within our power to change, not what is within the homes . So glad I'm not a teen today .
Old man nobody cares about you and your childhood. My dad is a cop as is my older brother and they both showed me how to shoot, not to just go around putting holes into people but to protect myself and my community. We need more good people with guns not less, and we need schools that actually do their jobs and stop letting people be harassed by other students
I've had a quick look through the first dozen or so reponses, and it's remarkable - shocking - that it's only non-Americans who express astonishment at the prevalence of gun-ownership in the USA - Americans simply say that there should be more gun controls. Well, how about exercising full gun control by outlawing gun ownership unless you have a very strong, professional reason for owning one? I know it would take at least a generation to achieve this, but - you know what - how about the USA taking the UK as its role model for once, instead of vice versa?
Exactly. Even the bereaved mother said the "root cause of these shootings was loneliness." There's a lot of loneliness here in Australia, but without easy access to guns, loneliness doesn't translate to school shootings.
@@FurianFlame129 Bullying has been around for a long time. When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s, if we were bullied, it usually ended up in a fight after school away from the school property. There would always be an audience of schoolmates. No one ever pulled a gun. The biggest difference now is social media. Bullying via social media is out of control.
@@nebtheweb8885 fights still happen like that. Problem is more and more kids have mental illness and social media and the constant source of negative information (news media) doesn't help. There were still school shootings through the 1900s though. Media just wasn't as big so you didn't see them or know about them
Watching The USA from the perspective of people like me living in France, it is absolutely insane to see individuals being proud to own guns that are causing so much untimely deaths between school kids. Can someone educate the rest of us Why some Americans buy, love and Play with guns despite their evident disastrous consequencies.
It’s an ego thing I think, there’s people that go to the grocery store and feel the need to have their gun showing while it’s holstered.. why the heck does anyone feel the need to bring a gun to a supermarket? But it’s usually the weak people with guns. Somehow that makes them feel feared and that’s exactly what they want; to intimidate.
Well allow me to explain. The USA has ~15k gun murders a year, by comparison, the fbi says there are atleast 200k defensive uses of firearms each year (ppl legally defending themselves). Also of the ~15k or so murders with a gun, the overwhelming majority are committed by ppl illegally possessing guns (over 80%), so please explain to me how preventing law abiding citizens from having firearms (gun control) is the answer. On the topic of mass shootings, the idea that the usa has uniquely high rate isn't based in reality. Its hard to actually track and define mass shootings but the crime prevention research center has a study comparing the annual rate of mass shooting deaths of the USA, Canada and Europe, and what do you know, the US isn't particularly high on the list, in fact France's rate is higher (.3 per million as opposed to .08). School shooting, while horribly tragic make up a infantile percentage of actual gun deaths in America, and sadly is used as a tool by the media to push gun control. What ppl like me in America think is insane is to look at a couple anecdotal incidents and consider that evidence the issue in the USA is the guns, especially when 80% of murders in the USA are drug/gang related.
It’s beyond belief to me , how can your lives of children ever be lost to someone with an armalite ,or any other firearm for that matter, I served in the British army and learnt respect for the gun, how can teenagers be allowed to get access to them ,
@@bnose202 the fact that an AR was even brought into the conversation just shows dishonesty. I do like how you immediately try to insult someone you've never met though, shows that you function at a very high level. The problem is, and never was, access to firearms, it is the lack of responsibility being promoted in this country that is causing these issues.
@@mikedennis8213 I will add my son is a serving police officer in Liverpool, and yes guns are sometimes used, but he and a vast majority of his compatriots would never want to be armed, your still living in the Wild West, high noon and all that shit
If it was not the guns he could easily use a knife 🔪 and go on stabbing individuals or worse running people over with a car. The root cause is not weapons it's the mental state of the criminal.
@@nilnil8411 bulls1t you may be able to stop someone with a knife. Much harder if they've got a gun as they can take you out before you can even get close
@@nilnil8411 so....explain to me why there are no such things as school massacres in other countries where there is weapon legislation and kids don't have access to guns
What bothers me and what bother all of us as well is the National Rifle Association's "good guy with a gun" nonsense. Wayne LaPierre has brought with that "good guy with a gun" nonsense and he is having a lavish lifestyle with all the blood money.
@@la_sn3ak3r19 Law abiding citizens? Civilians cannot use firearms unless if you are in the military or in law enforcement. Therefore, confiscate the guns.
I cry about the 9,941 Black men, women and children who have been murdered in the streets last year (this is 2,000 more than the year before) and CNN doesn't care enough about them to report on this outrage! Say THEIR names - well, I guess you can't if you don't even know that they were murdered!
Tucker Carlson is a real sociopath for attacking Brianna Keilar the way he did. She displays more empathy in this one video than I've seen from him in years.
@@mikehawk4714 From my point of view Tucker Carlson is fake. I used to believe him but he lies so much about Covid now and I almost died from Covid. I can't stand him anymore because he doesn't care about ordinary people. Sure, I understand why people who are better off would like him but he should at least stop pretending that he's fighting for everybody and just admit that he doesn't care about the less fortunate.
The Republicans say no abortions cause they care about the unborn, 350 school shootings since the Sandy hook shootings, why not concentrate on the children who are alive and make it safe for them with real gun control , but they turn a blind eye to this so they can keep their base happy and keep the reelection campaign funds flowing, my heart goes out to this mother and her brave son.
