The writers were not fans of the source or they wouldn't have "fixed" everything so poorly. They aren't good writers, I suspect they aren't good readers either.

And the characters too! Its so nice to see that they didn't just approach this as another job. You can tell they understand the characters they are playing and its so lovely to see.

Well casting is fine, but the writing is just utterly bad and most of the time its totally missing the source material and characters and how they are depicted. Writers didn't read the source material or then they did not understand any of it. Much of great things in the show but as an adaptation it's just bad...

I loved how he said there should be a wheel of time university lol. Makes me think a step further and with for a wheel of time theme park or medieval fair.

He's one book short of that though, which means he may not have known about how literal his statement was, the statement of being near the top of the mountain and how the view is incredible.

@@amys0482 I guess Rand will meet Min in Fal Dara in episode 7. Very short interaction with Rand will happen just like the eye of the world book. Different place but same circumstance. This is just a speculation.

yes min is in 2 episode in the first season. elyane will appear in season 2. they decided to push the caemlyn visit to season 2 along with baerlon. practically it would have been to rushed in the allotted time to be able to really feel like a seamless transition from location to location

Also, as you know, "rand" (in Dutch) can connote other meanings: edge, rim, and border, for example. Lan is from the Borderlands, so he has a connection too, that way.

I think that is actually the point of having him look like that. My money is on them mentioning seeing the hooded figure to each other, and then he shows up like that at night and scares the piss out of them, lmao.

I have similar feelings. I'm not 100% sold on Egwene just yet either. Rand's casting is another one, but he's decent enough. As far as looks are concerned, he's certainly pretty. I wish his hair was longer, but that's just a irrelevant nitpick of mine. I think over time, they'll probably grow into their roles. I am absolutely loving Lan, Moiraine and Nynaeve's casting. I also love Barney Harris (Mat Cauthon), so I'm pretty concerned over his recasting after this season Hopefully Dónal Finn will do a great job though, but it's definitely going to be jarring, at least in the beginning.

What are you talking about? Not too many Changes? Perrin has a wife who specifically doesn't love him who he kills. A woman can be the dragon for some reason? Mens arrogance led to the dark one being released? Egwene and rand bang? They're literally teasing a romance angle with Perrin and egwene. There's no baerlorn. Tom doesn't have a patchwork cloke. The character stuff is what hits the most. They didn't need to she them up and all of the character dynamics are completely butchered. Nynaeve was adopted for some reason? Non of this is necessary. At all. Amazon have Judd 11,000 studio notes just for the pilot.

@@undead.rising It’s very likely that Barney Harris’s reason for departure is something very serious and personal that he had no control over, like a health crisis. In that case, it’s not shaming him to leave him out, it’s a respectful decision to give him privacy and space while he’s dealing with something challenging.

It's not "incredibly shameful" to respect his privacy.The rest of us don't find it "incredibly awkward" that every interview has not included all the major members of the cast.

Min is Kae Alexander, she's already on season one, most fans believe they'll be Lanfear and Verin (but I think Aviendha is going to be on season two too)

If you watch past the first few episodes, they didn’t change the fact that the Power is split, or many of the underpinnings of the magic system that I can see other than the specific detail that the Dragon is known from the start to be a man in the books. Which is a change you don’t have to like, but also won’t matter at all in the long term, since they’ve been clear that who the Dragon is has not changed from the books, and all the signs are there. For me, I don’t mind the change, in part because I honestly felt that the Dragon needing to be a man was a plot hole or a failure of imagination on the part of Robert Jordan in the books. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the books, but that was one piece that always felt out of place to me thematically. The whole narrative of the WoT sets up this yin-yang between men and women where neither is greater or lesser, and they can be different and still support one another. But it’s odd, because the books go to so much trouble to set up gender equality as a driving theme, and then they also say that the messiah figure in this universe, the most powerful channeler must always, always be a man? It felt out of place, like a sort of “Yes, men and women are equal and saidin and saidar are equal even though they’re different, but men are more muscular in real life so even in this fantasy world using a power that is not physical, they must be STRONK.” Honestly it diminished saidar for me and made the Wheel feel imbalanced, that only a wielder of saidin could ever be the most powerful channeler, and that even casual saidin wielders are generally more powerful. I know Robert Jordan said some mealy mouthed stuff about how women are more skillful with their weaves even if they’re less powerful, or whatever, but let’s be real: the messiah figure always being a man tilts the book universe in favor of saidin being more important, and undercuts the yin-yang concept. I get that it raises the stakes for the Dragon to be a man, but I don’t see why it HAS to be a man for the fear of the Dragon’s rebirth to be there. After all, you’re still talking a 50-50 chance for the most powerful person on Earth to be doomed to madness, which I don’t consider enough better than a 100% chance to be at all comforting. If anything, it might just contribute to the prejudice against a male Dragon for the Dragon to possibly be female, because certain characters might assume that whether the Dragon is male or female is what will determine whether they save or break the world. Anyway, that’s just my take: if you’re attached to the book’s interpretation where the most powerful character absolutely must be a man, that part of this adaptation will rub you the wrong way. But not much else has changed with the magic system, if that makes it any better for you.

@@melanieenglish2664 I mean the Dragon needing to be male isn't really a pot hole at all. Its a pretty well laid out part of the story. The entire background with the male part being tainted by the dark lord as a final strike against Lews Therin and Lews Therin shattering the world in his grief sets a tension in the story for every single person to be scared of any male channeling. I also think the power of the male vs female channelers was carefully planned out. Individual male channelers are on average quite a bit stronger, but they aren't able to link like Female channelers are. This means a tower of all male channelers would struggle against a tower of female channelers as groups of 13 would be able instantly shield or sever any male channeler without any chance for resistance. The point isn't that the dragon is supposed to be the most powerful character, its that everyone knows he is going to go mad and destroy the world (in what is assumed to be a similar fashion to Lews Therin) and yet he is the only chance of defeating the dark one. That tension between him being terrible for the world and yet being the only chance the world has is super important, you just wouldn't have that with a female channeler. A super powerful female channeler is going to be revered like the Amyrlin seat so you just wouldn't get that internal good/evil conflict. Its also important that the Dragon is a man because he needs to have no one to teach him how to use his power. That's another major conflict point that is super important imo.

Narratively, yes I agree that the Dragon in this age needs to be a man for the reasons you state, and it’s very good that they are not changing that. My perspective is more that in the canon of the universe, I don’t see why it has to be a forgone conclusion that the Dragon is always and in all ages a man. Particularly because the main reason people fear the Dragon, the taint on saidin, is actually a pretty recent development in terms of the scope of how many ages the Dragon has been reincarnated in. It would seem to better balance saidar and saidin, to me, if there’s at least the possibility that in ages long past a woman broke the world and tainted saidar, and that cycle is repeating itself and playing out slightly differently again and again and again. And even if that can’t be the case, and the Dragon does have to be a man, it would also make sense to me in universe for some of the characters to believe that a figure as important as the Dragon couldn’t possibly be a man, because of the prejudices women hold against men who can channel. Or that they would fear a female Dragon because they’re worried that she might “finish the job” and taint the other half of the Power. Idk, basically I think there’s plenty of ways that the narrative can still work with this possibility left open, and that Jordan could have explored. As for your point about women being the only characters who can link, I don’t disagree with anything you said about it but I also didn’t love that part of the book canon lol. The same way that men being per se stronger felt a little like a lazy “men strong” stereotype, only women being able to link felt like it was saying in some way “women are good at making connections with one another and men just aren’t, so only women can link.” Which again, felt like a lazy stereotype that diminishes the depth of the bonds that men can form with other people, and that they form with one another in the books. I found some of the ways saidar and saidin differed to be interesting and engaging and cool, but the strength disparity and the linking disparity seemed like they took the magic system in a weird direction to make a questionable point about gender, to me. So basically I agree with you that that is how the books are, but you named another of my least favorite parts of the magic system so I don’t feel all that attached to it.

​@@melanieenglish2664 This is such a perfect encapsulation of how I feel about WOT, and it speaks explicitly to an inherent bias in the author that is antithetical to the themes in the text. I can understand the reasoning for why it has to be a man, and I accept that in that universe the explanation of why it is a man, but I think the execution and the hermeneutics is lazy. Like you said, it's out of place, for all the reasons you mention above. The WOT universe works so hard to establish the rules and functions of how that world operates and then it contradicts and undercuts all of it by making the prophecy be phallocentric. The fear that it is a male channeler is absolutely warranted but I always felt that the prophecy itself should've been genderless.

Caemlyn is in season 2. hope it transition well to the screen but we do lose out on prob one of the most memorable iconic scenes of all time in the entire series with rand climbing the wall and and seeing logain for the first time.

If you can’t hear this Perrin pause on everything he says, or hear the hunger in this Egwene, or hear the struggle in this Nynawve. Then only looks matter to you, and this book series wasn’t meant for you.

lol yeah some of those camera shots seem to have been more focused on her mole than anything else in the scenes. dead center screen and zoomed in so close part of her head and chin didnt even fit in the shot...weird choice to shoot a scene imo

guessing you havent read the books at all. i honestly had a concern for this when they released this in 2021 in the age of ''men bad'' that that fact alone would be so much more emphasized and to non readers would correlate current political climate to this series when in actuality it was written like this decades ago. Because of that i feel they made a bad decision to cut the breaking of the world from being the first thing you see and instead put in liandrin and the red ajah which are notoriously known for their disdain for men. anyone who dont know the actual story will 100% assume they are pandering to current toxic Ideology.
