The pizza with banana is often called "Africana", because banana in food is a staple in East Africa (they use Plantain in West Africa which is a different thing altogether). It's usually curry powder rather than curry sauce where mentioned. I personally really like that sweet/savoury/slightly spicy blend). Any lettuce is always put on the pizza afterwards. The restaurants are not allowed to slice pizza because the cutter is almost impossible to clean to the required standards between each use. Older flats don't have washing machines. There's instead a communal washroom with, usually, two heavy, near-industrial washing machines somewhere in or near the building. You have to book your 3-5 hour slot in advance. Modern flats do have a washer and a dryer in the flat, usually in the bathroom (never in the kitchen like in the UK).

Usually Pizza's that have lettuce/cucumber/tomatoes it's put on fresh after the pizza is baked. As for the pineapple and banana on pizza, it usually comes with curry powder and not curry sauce (at least around where I live in Sweden) and it goes really well together. * Should also note that the pizza salad they usually come with is cabbage, sometimes carrot, black pepper/salt and vinegar. There's usually no oil involved lol. ** Also to mention the standard pizza size, depending on how hungry you are it's either one meal or two meals. My sister usually buys 2 of those, one for herself and 1 for her 2 kids to share pretty much. *** To answer your question about washing machines etc. It is very common for Swedes to share a laundry room when you live in a flat/condo complex. Some do have space for one in the flat/condo but would be a cost for the tenant to buy one of their own and have it installed while the landlord usually has a laundry room everyone share by booking a time slot etc.

The pizza salad is technically what you would call a quick pickle because it's a mix of white vinegar and sugar. The washing machine thing is super common if you live in a rented apartment, sometimes the laundry room (tvättstuga, which directly translates to laundry cottage/house) is located in a separate house from the actual building (which is more common to see in older buildings or in smaller villages rather than in larger cities with newly built apartment complexes), but usually they're situated in the cellar or ground floor of the building. In some older rented apartments I've also seen fittings for a laundry machine available even though they also have a dedicated laundry room, so I guess it varies quite a lot.

About the laundry. Back in the old days apartment buildings were almost always built with communal areas such as laundry rooms with multiple machines shared among the residents of the building. You book a free slot in the schedule, usually like 4 hrs at a time, when you want to use the facility. Often it is located in the bottom of the building (the basement) or in a separate building nearby. It is great for residents living in smaller apartments or with small bathrooms etc. Ofcourse when washing machines became more affordable for the general public, more people living in flats installed their own (if they had the space). However now in the, let's call it the "post modern era", new buildings are rarely built with these communal laundry rooms. Instead, a washing machine is often included, or at least prepared for in the bathrooms of new developed properties. In fact, interior communal areas in general in newer buildings are really rare. Wich has led to a shortage of bombshelters in Swedish towns and cities. Residential developments bulit in WWII, and later during the cold war, were planned with shelters that could house whole blocks of ppl in case of bombings or nuclear warfare. I'm guessing it is more cost-effective to simply not build laundry rooms nor shelters. To answer your question - no, ofcourse not all swedes use communal laundry rooms. But it was quite a common thing back in the 20th century. I think it was a part of the social democratic project called "social engineering", or more correct/direct translated from swedish "social engineering art", were lives of ordinary people were sought to become more rational and effective. Edit: I myself still use a communal laundry room fyi :)

Pizza salad is made of cabbage, sometimes carrot, and vinegary. If you live in a block of flats, you always have a shared Tvättstuga, washing area. You book a time for your laundry. Only in the newly built (and expensive) flats do you get a washer/dryer in the flat. If you are lucky there is room for a washer in your flat and you can buy one yourself, but especially older flats don't have space for it. Since it's common with a Tvättstuga you really don't see any laundrymats in Sweden.

First of all, we usually call this pizza "Africana" that she eats and it is very good. Then we have one we call "Hawai" where it's just pineapple and ham (my favorite and I usually order extra pineapple) Now it's becoming more common to have your own washing machine and dryer, which is called a laundry stack, in your bathroom. Those who don't have it can use the house's laundry room or room where there is both a drying room and a mangle, and where I live, the appointment is handled there by the computer. I go to my property owner's page and into the washing times page and set myself up there, we have 3 hours per washing time with 2 washing machines and a tumble dryer. Here we have tags to open everything with so you don't enter the laundry room if you don't have that time. As my laundry room is an independent building, you can wash at night when you have the time from 00:00 to 06:00 to wash. Yes, it is 😀

Actually there is flats that have their own washing machine. Trevor and mine flat has both washing, dryer and dishing machine in the flat. But we also pay for the water we totally use. In houses people have their own. But in houses with flats it is still common to share in a specifique place. So you have to book your time and hold the time too. Some can also have "drop in", but then it's hard to get a time when it is available for laundry. Plus in most shared you can't wash 24/7 either.
@nasstroms

Hi Dwayne, I'd say that everyone living in any type of house has a washing machine whiole most people living in flats (rented apartments) does not. When you live in rented houses (made for renting) they normally have a comercial grade (or 2 or 3) washing machines you book and use. Saves space in the flat. Of course you'll find people that buy their own machines maybe due to special requirenments on their washing or just to avoid the hassle of booking and having to keep track of when to wash. Things look different when you rent a flat owned by a small company or single person. They do not have the funds to keep separate washing spaces with achines going so there you'd find washing machines in every flat (normally only a few flats together) Pizza in sweden is a science. I checked one of our local pizzerias and they have about 70 different pizzas (based on topping). Most of them comes in three variations. The basic, middle and expensive choice. The basic has the basic toppings. Then more toppings gets added on the next level and even more toppings on the most expensive one. I've never seen any pizza (I have bought or eaten) where something cold is added on top. So if you find a cucumber, as well as tomato, bell pepper, onion and so on pizza, the veggies are part of the topping and goes into the oven. They really cater to all tastes!

There is a law in Sweden that says that all apartment buildings must have a laundry room, unless the landlord chooses to install a washing machine and dryer in each apartment. Most apartments have a laundry room and not a washing machine not in the apartment itself. In fact, in most places, it may be better to have a laundry room than to have your own washing machine, some may have four large washing machines more of the type you use in laundries, and maybe one for carpets, so you get to wash everything even if you have loads of laundry. Dryers must also be included, but there is almost always a drying room as well.

Tomato sauce, cheese, pineapple, banana, curry powder, peanuts and either fillet of beef or chicken is a common pizza here in Sweden, we call it an Africana. The savory elements actually balance out the sweet pretty well, sort of like gingersnap/gingerbread cookies with blue cheese, another Swedish invention. For the pizza it can get dry if they aren't generous with the cheese though, so it can be a bit of a miss for that reason. Another variant is tomato sauce, cheese, ham, banana, curry powder, peanuts and bearnaise sauce. It's VERY heavy though, you can almost feel your veins restricting. 😛 Oh and about the laundry situation, it's for rental flats and smaller/older apartments. You have to provide your own washing machine which might not fit and there is always a communal laundry/drying room in any block of flats where you rent. There's a whole culture around it and some people really revert back to viking status if someone steals their laundry time or whatever. 😂

Where I live, we do have that very basic kebab pizza where apart from the tomato sauce and cheese, there's only meat, onions and a couple of pickled greed peppers, but we also have the more elaborate ones; my local pizzeria had eight different varieties, including the basic one. And yes, one of those varieties has fries. Whether or not a kebab pizza comes with sauce already on it varies too; in Gothenburg it's usually already added (or at least it was when I lived there about fifteen years ago), but in my equally West Swedish home town, they only do so it if you eat at the pizzeria, and when you order it to go or have it delivered, you will instead get it in a plastic container. Exactly what sauces are available varies too, in West Sweden, they are generally white or at least were white before you added the spices, while in other parts of the country they may very well be bright red. I prefer the "hot" one you get in Gothenburg and along much of the coast to what we get further inland in the region though, that's one of the things I really miss about living there... I think they might have this Gothenburg/west coast sauce down in Scania too, by the way, but I've never had kebab there so I don't actually know. Lettuce and similar veggies that don't cook well are added after the pizza comes out of the oven. Fresh mushrooms and sliced tomatoes can be added either before or after, so if you're like my brother and sensitive to raw tomatoes but not cooked ones, you should ask or simply tell them to leave any tomatoes other than those in the regular sauce off. My local pizzeria's version of her "Exotic" is called "Africana" and has ham, banana , pinepple and curry powder. So a mix between that and the next one really, and also with curry powder rather than curry sauce. In any case, pretty much every single pizzeria has something similar, and some have even more. I think the one closest to my aunt has six or seven banana-curry pizzas (still powder, not sauce), some with no meat, some with ham, some with chicken, and yes peanuts enter into the equation too. My American friend who tried one with banana, curry powder, chicken and peanuts really liked it, by the way. Different to what they were used to, but good in a guilty pleasure sort of way. Honestly, a lot of Swedish pizzas seem to be "We already stock this, so let's put it with some of the stuff we stock for other pizzas and see if it sticks or not." Which means that there are loads of different local varieties, and apart from Margherita you can never go by name only, you _have_ to read the description on the menu. Even a classic like Marinara is iffy since some might serve the Naples version (tomato sauce, garlic, olive oil and oregano or basil) and others the Swedish version (tomato sauce, cheese, mussels/clams and shrimp). Actually, some pizzerias in might use tuna rather than mussels/clams for their Swedish-style Marinara... Oh, and as a native Swede, the only place I've seen pizzas come in slices is Pizza Hut, and in this country they're more of a... I shouldn't say high-end restaurant, but they only exist in a few places and are defintiely aimed at a different segment of the market than elsewhere. They're not your usual neighborhood pizzeria, instead they're that cool American pizza restaurant in e.g. Stockholm or Gothenburg that you never thougth to visit. That pizza feeds two adult and quite hungry Swedes normally, or you know, one such Swede who then doesn't have to think about dinner the next day. Which I guess is why she too gave up after about half. By the way, my favorite pizza has beef, taco salsa, jalapeños and garlic on it.

There are usually 3 sizes of pizza in Sweden, Kids (or small), Standard and Family (or Large/XL) you also have the optional type of "inbakad" which makes the pizza in to the style of a Calzone (Folded pizza essentially), the standard size is usually enough for 2 people or one hungry or larger person and a lot of people like to order a 50-50 pizza if they plan to share it, me and my wife tend to do that as she loves banana and curry and me not so much. The Kids size is about half or 3/4 of a standard pizza in size and the Family is normally 2 1/2 standard pizzas (size vary from restaurant to restaurant), most vegetables are served cold on the pizza unless specified. Though not as common but some do have the option you can mix and match toppings to your choice and end up making some wild creations as long as they have the ingredients for it and if a lot of people order the same (or you yourself order it often enough) it can end up as a standard menu item.

Two of the more stranger pizzas that you won't find everywhere. 1) Vulkanpizza (you should be able to google it for pictures). Easy translate, volcano pizza. It's a Swedish smörgåsbord of 4-6 different pizzas on the same pizza. And a kebab in the middle. Why choose! 2) There is a dish in Sweden called "planka" or plank. It's a wooden board with meat that has mashed potatoes around it. And yes, that do exist as a pizza. My personal opinion, mashed potatoes on pizza don't really work. Also, when I studied in Umeå they had this tradition of rolling your pizza for easy on the go eating. Don't tell the Italians about us 😅

The rolled up pizza is probably the best (and only) way to eat pizza on the go when it is minus 20 degrees Celsius in the winter. Mind you that this "pizza roll" is only/mainly served from foodtrucks. And yes, I have tried them in the winter. The only gripe is the slightly less topping to be able to roll it...

I'm not sure about the place she is at, but I never seen 'curry sauce' on a pizza in Sweden, curry powder is quite common thou. I think that is what they got at her local pizzeria to but she assumed 'curry' meant sauce not powder (as far as I can see from looking at it, it looks like powder and cheese, not sauce). Sidenote: I dislike it but my mother love it. My prefered pizza is mushrooms, jalapenos and tzatziki (+tomatoasauce and cheese). P.S. That is a one person pizza.

about washing machines, if you own your place, or if its a insats, you usually have washing machine in your home. if you rent then there might be the option to have one for a slightly higher rent. otherwise the option for rents is a a "tvättstuga" or "washing cabin" where you can make appointment to wash. usually its a room with 2-3machines that you get access to for 3-4hours. and nobody can enter other then you. there are older versions where people could take or steal laundry.

Curry isn't British curry, but curry powder. On bananas. Where I used to live they served a kebab pizza in a semi Calzone version with proper chips/fries on top. "french chef kiss" sooo good. Nowadays there are some places that will serve you half and half. Half of the pizza is savoury with prosciutto or the like, and the other half is dessert pizza with goat cheese and marmalade. Stonking!

to answer your question about when you should/would order an "exotic pizza" (called hawai pizza by most) I think you order it when your friends want pizza and you are not really in the mood for pizza or when you are just too tired to make your own food but at the same time you dont want pizza.

That is not a pizza with curry sauce, it's curry powder that has mixed with moisture and cheese... A pizza that is pretty common in Sweden (exist on the menu of most pizza places (that I have visited in, different regions of Sweden)) is one with curry (powder), chicken, banana, (and sometimes peanuts and/or pineapple), and every combination of the above. What she's eating seems like the vegetarian version, I often eat it without pineapple but with peanuts and have garlic sauce on the side. Love your reactions and would love to meet you when you get here (seems like we share a lot of views and have a similar approach to food)!

I would like to add that for the last 25 years or so, most washing machines in Sweden display how much time your laundry cycle is going to take, so it is easy to just make a timer alarm on your phone based on that.

I'm Swedish, and I love pineapple on pizza, but I don't really like my pizza with banana. I do love bananas, but I'm not really a fan of when it gets warm and mushy. I often order a "Hawaii special" at my local pizza place, and it's the usual stuff (dough, tomato sacue and cheese) and the toppings are ham, shrimp and pineapple~ I also tend to choose mild sauce to go with it. I love the freshness and sweetness of the pineapple pieces together with the saltyness of the ham, cheese and shrimps. Also, I know this is weird for some people, but if I eat pizza at home then I tend to cut my pizza with scissors. It works so well!

Today, my go to ranking for pizza in Sweden without any order: -Pinapple, chicken, curry, chili, banana, peanuts. -Tuna, jalapeno, pinapple, curry -"4 seasons" cheese, shrimp, clams, mushrooms, ham, olives (in different sections) Back in the days when I were training alot I could call my local pizzeria and say my name and they could say "the ordinary?"... that were a kebab pizza with (of cause) pinapple, ham and half of it with spicy sauce and the other with béarnaise. Extra: Many appartments in Sweden have a limited space if you have a rental. That's the reason why you either have a laundry in the basement or a house outside the appartment building with washing facilities. If you have a larger rental or buy a appartment they more often come with the plumbing and space to add your own washer (in rentals you can have the option to add one and take a extra charge on your rent due to the added "living quality" -this can be made with many household stuff such as newer fridge, oven, dishwasher etc).. but you can most often add this by your own if you just keep the old one and move it back once you move out.

Candy pizza. Pizza with mashed potatoes and smoked moose meat, and.. of course their gold pizza with actual gold on it..

I Agree with Lasse! Banana and curry go very well together! There is a popular Swedish dish called a "Flying Jakob" fried chicken in a curry sauce with bananas and peanuts! I personally mainly prefer Pizza with my favourite mix of toppings, that are: Bacon, Ham, Onions and Champinjon mushrooms! I have even enjoyed this mix of toppings on a Chicago Deep Dish Pizza Pie at Giordanos in Chicago! Best pizza ever - imnsho! BUT among the alternative pizzas I will get in Sweden, depending on what my palate crave for the moment! Are: Kebab Pizza or chicken, curry, banana and Pineapple Pizza! And it's great! Don't criticise before you have tried it yourself! PS About Laundry! Majority of Swedes live in apartment blocks and every building has a communal laundry room!

I added garlic kebab sauce to it as well. Some other new fun ones that I want to try are "Tre Kronor" with asparagus, bacon, pork filet, tomato and béarnaise sauce, "Veronese" with buffalo mozzarella, garlic marinated mushrooms, beef filet, jalapeno, olive oil and ruccola and the "Chevré" with goat cheese, buffalo mozzarella, pine nuts, walnuts, mushrooms, honey and ruccola. Different pizza houses have different names offcourse but i believe the most common name for the one with curry sauce is called Africana and usually consists of tomato sauce, cheese, beef, peanuts, banana, pineapple and on top the curry sauce! It's a great one 😅 Personally i think fries on the pizza is a little over the top it's too much! Regarding the size of the pizza i say it's a typical Swedish size. If you are aware that Swedes loves bananas and eats about 100 bananas each every year it's no surprise it eventually made it to the pizza. The Swedish pizzasallad is similar to coleslaw but has no mayonnaise. My guess is she's living in a apartment building and in those it's not common to have a washing machine in your own apartment. Those buildings usually have a area for washing and drying in the basement or in some cases in a external building in the courtyard
