British guitarist analyses Greta Van Fleet - Please don't mention Led Zeppelin!!! 

Josh (singer) is a quirky, awkward, weird, unapologetic front man. He's not boring for sure. Young man is already a star.

My son introduced me to these guys. And as a classic rock lover I am so happy that he did. Pure talent, no autotune, kind of like going back in time.

Yes the singer, the riff, the groove, and the presentation screams Led Zeppelin but SO WHAT! They're awesome! Very tight. Great to see young kids playing stripped down, bare bones rock and roll. Puts nothing but a big smile on this 51 year old face. And for those of you who are complaining that they sound like Zeppelin, would you rather they sound like the Osmonds?

I found these guys from a post someone shared a few years ago and I was like, “WTF” these guys are awesome!! I’m 60 and a lifelong classic rock fan & these guys take me back there. They are just fun to watch!! 🎤🎸 I immediately sent the video to my 3 daughters who were like, “damn Momma they are amazing” I stumbled across your channel recently and I’m so glad I did! As a huge LZ fan these guys rock. Being compared to LZ is a complement no one is saying they are copying LZ.

Great, finally someone who appreciates GVF musicianship and fresh and crisp sound and just about everything about them, rather than comparing them to the almighty LZ. Sure the LZ fans, like myself, will love GVF! I can’t remember the last time I was so excited about a new artist when I heard them for the first time. There is another one that gave me that feeling recently, Tash Sultana. Ever so different genre, but same kind of energy. Well done Sir.

I'm 42. I've not been so excited about a band since hearing guns n roses for the first time. They just have a 60s 70s vib about them. Utterly love them. Just let my dad who's 73 have a listen. The smile on his face said it all!!!!! Epic

I'm 55, grew up on the now classic rock bands, I just discovered Greta van fleet, and have been listening to them the last couple of days and I gotta say, I get goose bumps listening to them, absolutely fantastic, these guys are awesome.

I'm 59 and have seen GVF live twice - the first time 2 years ago. I heard once "if Robert Plant and Janice Joplin had a child/grandchild it would be Josh". You can hear them both in his voice. I can't imagine sitting motionless like the audience in this video... love this band.

I don't remember the last time I've been this excited about a band since I discovered THE SAINTS in mid eighties. I just met three young guys on 220 bus in London. They spoke in an American accent but turned out to be European (Netherlands, Sweden, etc. ) Anyway, I told them about you and GRETA. So I'm doing my best to spread the word! They seemed very interested. So with a bit of luck they'll follow the lead and subscribe to your channel. I'm 55 and my youngest son who's 18 introduced me to Greta. His favorite band. He loves Zeppelin because he listened to my stuff as he grew up. Man Greta just made me smile!!!! Great rock and don't care one bit who they sound like. Just freaking great band! Rock Lives!

What's fantastic about these kids, they stayed humble growing up and took to their parents musical influences. Josh was not interested at first, but then he decided to join his brothers. At first he didn't have a mic and realized he had to sing louder to be heard. It was then that he and his brothers realized that he had power. GVF is a young band. It will be interesting to watch them grow.I think they're pretty damn good now. If you get the time, could you review one more? I suggest Edge of Darkness or Black Smoke Rising. Great review bro!

I liked their clean sound. Hope they do well. My 22 yr old grandson showed up while I was watching it. And he said; “Nana, aren’t you a little old for this kind of music?”

When I first heard these guys I honestly thought it might of been Zeppelin. Either a new album or songs that were never released. I’m 51 so I grew up in the 80s but I listened to music like, the Stones, Earth Wind And Fire, Bee Gees, The Doors, etc. And I fell in love with the 90s music after that for me, music took a downward spiral it’s good to hear a REAL rock band these days.

I saw them friday in Paris and they blown my mind! The audience was thrilled because they are such talented musicians. I was in front of the bassist and he is soo good! Plus he plays the keyboard which is rare for a rock band nowadays. They all really feel the music and it’s so refreshing!

It might be because I was born in the sixties , but they sound like a good hard rockin` band to me . Like someone said in another comment about this video , " Since when did bands stop sounding like one another ? "

I LOVE the fact the guitarist plays in "Beatle Boots" (sorta), the singer is in Berkenstocks and the bassist is barefoot.....ALWAYS. I can't get enough of these guys.

The more you listen to their music the less it sounds like led zepplin. Just sit on the music and you’ll discover there quirks. They’re still evolving just give them timing

FiI loved everything about this video, right from the beginning when the music cues up and you said, THAT'S how you start a track!" Your enthusiasm is contagious and your commentary about the band's sound is intelligent and insightful. Stuff like the way the lead player riffs to fill out the sound and how the band's sound is right for the room-- I kept on thinking "yeah he's spot-on with that." It's not only your insight but also your sheer love of rock that is so obvious. Made me wish I was there. Thanks for another great video. (Edited to spell Fil's name right.)

When I was young (back when the KT boundary was forming), I used to go to the record store (like you said), grab the new album I'd heard about and counted the days till I got, and bring that thing home and listen to it whilst staring at and closely studying the album cover, projecting my whole existence onto it, and using the art work to fuel my little daydreams. It really was a complete experience to buy a record back then.

I saw these guys in concert May 12th. I'm 44 years old man and they absolutely blew my mind. To be a 44 year old musician, and have a bunch of 20 year old dudes blow your mind like this? These guys are definitely talented, and I'm hoping that they can be the Catalyst to bring rock and roll back onto the radio.

This kid has tremendous vocal range. Like the guitar work too. I don't care who they sound like. This song can stand on its own. Hell, I'm just excited to hear good old rock music again. ☺️😎

I’m late to this video but I’ve been into GVF for a couple years. I’m 61 now, and my 20 something son turned me on to them, as he’d heard all my favorite bands from the 70s-80s, Rush, Zep, Triumph, and many others Your analysis is spot on. They’re a tight band, they have the musical sensibilities of the great bands of the past, and they’ve got incredible skills and talent that simply will not be ignored. And I agree that the crossed arms crowd was bemusing. I would’ve been rocking out and pumping my fist in the air! Great job, Fil! Always love hearing your takes on music! 👍

I just heard Greta Van Fleet Anthem Of The Peaceful Army album. They have their own sound. Yeah us old folks that grew up with Zeppelin back in the 60's, would say yes they do have some of that sound. But Greta Van Fleet has their own style of music. Greta Van Fleet is an American rock band from Frankenmuth, Michigan, formed in 2012. Their parents brought them up with 60's blues and rock and that is the style of music that we need to come back. Not this new pop. Thanks for the review on them.

I'm 60, I grew up on Led Zepplin. This is no rip off of Led Zepplin. These kids are amazing. And being from the Mitten myself it's doubly exciting to know they're from the Great Lakes as well. Sure, I hear the Zepplin under tones. Like you hear the Sinatra in Michael Buble. It's because it's a sound we love so it comes out of our musicians as naturally as sap flowing from a tree. I can only hope these guys do something else Zepplin did, and that's be around with their own sound and their own lyrics and their own audience for decades.

Best rock band I've heard in years. I buy everything they release as soon as it comes out. I love LZ but these guys are not LZ, they have their own vibe. 57 years old and love this group.

Phil I went see them in New Orleans on 12/20/2019 and take it from someone who saw Led Zep once and Robert Plant & Jimmy Page twice they are not copying Led Zep. The energy in a sold out auditorium was through the roof. Age range was from 8 to 88 it seemed and everyone sang along which was not the case seeing the before mentioned. My brother had reservations about going but after they were done I said lets go and he said no wait they should have an encore. He was sold hook line and sinker on this band. Their performance was flawless as well. They rocked a rather large house. I also think this is their best gig and should package it as a live album.

Hey Fil...I totally agree with everything you said from the vocals, guitar playing and overall group tightness. what I like the most is they are different .it's so refreshing to me to hear a modern band sound so classic. Back in the day music was really a art form .you could clearly distinguish one band from another, instead of sounding like what's selling in the moment. these guys are awsome for coloring their music outside today's norm !!!

One of my biggest complaints regarding bands is the "sound like" complaint. Even Elvis was accused of ripping off acts as was Led Zep (listen to a little Muddy Waters). That there are influences in rock is a GOOD THING! I am so glad that these young men are PLAYING INSTRUMENTS, not using AUTOTUNE! There stage presence will come. And spare me the wardrobe complaints (like R & R is about conformity!). ROCK ON!

This is a great video. It's cool to hear an analysis of Greta Van Fleet by someone who knows what they're talking about. I knew the band was great (I've been obsessively listening to them for the past few weeks) but hearing it in a more technical way makes me like them and appreciate them even more.

I live about 45 minutes from where they grew up in Michigan. Shocked you are reacting to them!!! The audience just sitting there shocks me!! I am jamming just watching it now!!

I love Led Zeppelin, I really do, but they have not made a record in almost forty years. These cats are great and really rock. We should all be thankful for them in this time of prefab crap.

I LOVE this band! The neighbors must have loved them when they were growing up! I'm 59, grew up on all the 70's music, been playing guitar since I was 13....I LOVE these guys!

I'm 67, I heard these young fellows for the first time a few months ago and immediately purchased their three albums. They are such a breath of fresh air. They are also wonderful to listen to when being interviewed as they are very well spoken. Thank you so much for analyzing their music. Nice! Catching up gradually on your catalogue of videos. Will do a deeper dive into their stuff. Good on them for pushing through wifh energy facjng that dead front row in such a cramped space.

Great band, love these kids!!! I am in my 70's and have been able to see so many great bands/groups of the 60's, 70's and 80's in person. This group gives me chills to think of where they could go.. I hope that I get a chance to see them in person. Side note Fil, many concerts I went to like Doors, Rolling Stones, Cream etc were in venues with afixed seating and not any room to jump around. Lol

Going to see these later this year. Can't wait. Proper old school classic bluesy rock.

Having been to the wkqx sound lounge a few times, I must say, they’re killing it for the tiny room they’re in. It’s a room off of the wkqx break-room/lunch room in the NBC building in Chicago. No security really, just radio staff. If you notice the people sitting in chairs, they have since changed it to small couches for a more intimate experience. Sound lounge performances are put on for local folks who win a chance to see and meet their favorite bands for free via a text to win system. They pretty much ask each band to play three songs, answer questions for the crowd or tell stories in between each song, and then take pictures with each guest. It’s a pretty awesome experience. Usually the band is playing this show around 11am, and usually putting on a show somewhere in the city later that evening, and wkqx often give tickets to the winners to see the evening show as well. Just an insight as to why no one was on their feet! Believe me, Chicago loves Greta Van Fleet. If it wasn’t for the decorum of a business building at 11am, I think everyone in that room would have been going nuts.

I fully share Your Enthusiasm for this excellent Band. A friend recommended I check them out about 6 months ago and I was totally blown away. They are solid, tight and exciting.

I can only say This band is an awesome new band that may save Hard Rock,And all rock in general. I live in Saginaw MI ,USA Frankenmuth ,MI is right next to Saginaw .MI. Rock has been around since the 1950's. There are a ton of talented Musicians and singers around here always has been. Problem has been bands had to go to Motown (Detroit) to break into the bigger circuit's. This area has great musical traditions. Stevie WONDER, Madonna, ? mark & the Mysterians, Grand Funk Railroad, Bob Seger (From Ann Arbor)about a 100 miles from Frankenmuth&Saginaw and many ,many more fine bands. I am 68 and have been playing and singing Rock since I was 14. Yup I'm an old guy. But I still rock, Have played all over the U.S. with many bands. I just hope the people give these guys a chance because they are the real things . We are proud of them. Rock ain't dead here in MI. I hope it is still strong in the British Isles and all of Europe. I enjoy your Quality music lessons and your insight. Rock ON,

When you bought a record, getting home and going through the motions of putting it on the stereo for the first time was an event … you don't get that anymore :(

I’d love to see them Live, but haven’t crossed paths with them yet. It is awesome to hear nu instant classic rock! I also enjoyed your comments on the physical aspect of the music buying experience. Pursuing the vinyl for hours was my favorite entertainment back in college continuing with CDs. Sadly, I had to sell my music collection a year ago to travel fulltime. Fortunately, I still have my digital friends but it’s not quite the same.

Thanks for covering this Fil. A lot of us have been waiting for your review.. They have changed so much since this after months on the road. I first was exposed to these guys about 6 months ago, have been following them since. They've gotten phenomenally better just in the last year. the drummer and bass player just graduated high school. I'm excited AF about their potential!

It's rare to find good jam bands out there, great review and you pointed out some things I completely missed.

I saw them live in NY recently, and is crazy how good they’ve gotten within months. Super young artists who need nothing but support.

They are great great guys as I have met them a few times and my daughter has sung with their Dad's band a few times now too. Great people!

I LOVE GVF i grew up on LZ, Doors, Van Halen etc etc...so excited to see a new young ROCK band on the scene...as they say there's nothing new under the sun...everyone has been influenced by someone, LZ included & the guys flat out say this is the type of music their folks played around the house...how can you not be influenced. Wish everyone would just relax & enjoy the music or decide its not for them & flip the channel. GVF nails what a great performance band looks like, so much fun to watch them having fun...Josh is a great frontman. I don’t get the hate these guys have been getting as of late. Yeah, they clearly take a lot of inspiration from Zep... And? Who cares?! If you don’t find these guys even remotely talented something is wrong with you. They rock.

Just now saw these guys on "Saturday Night Live" last night, I was floored in 30 seconds listening to them. I went straight to RU-vid and found a bunch of there videos, The drummer play's guitar also, Plus, He's great on guitar!! I'm 64 years old and love this "Classic" Vibe music, Oh, The guitar player play's a real $30,000 1961 Gibson SG/Les Paul standard guitar, They're a big ticket guitar, Most guitar players keep switching around guitars on every other song, Not this guy. Outstanding !! :)

LZ... I hear it ... but I also hear AC/DC in the riff.. and a touch of Aero Smith... but this music (bluesy rock has been missed for sometime now....very refreshing)

I grew up listening to Zeppelin. Them and RUSH have been my top two for years. Having that gritty sound done in a new way with new tracks has been great. When Greta Van Fleet hits my area, a ticket I am buying. Surprised it took me a while to run across this video. You have a new subscriber Fil.

great video. it sounds nice to hear a musian spaking about technique and interpretation. For someone with a classical background I really miss those elements in music, they make a great difference in the overall sound. I love this band and obviously when i first heard them they recalled me of LZ. They are really very young so their references are still very fresh, but I think that they really have all the ingridients to follow a path of their own.

I never seen ppl just sitting there like their board with this band playing, crazy, id be jamming, clapping stomping and getting down, I can't believe these boys just picked up the instrument and tought them selves, amazing band, my Favouriteee,I Love, Love them, Jake and Josh are twins❣💘 🎸🎤🎶🎼

When I really like an artist I always purchase their album - even though I convert it to Lossless format! I have their From The Fires disk. Great to have a hard copy and support the band!

So glad to see you comment on Greta Van Fleet. I have only just discovered them. I am a big Zeppelin fan and saw a post about a comment Plant made. Sure there are some similarities, but they are still individual. Not a copy or tribute band. These are brilliant. It has been years and years since a band gave me this excitement. Wow 😮 incredible. Pure rock attitude, no bad press or gender reassignment,, or stupid tantrums at the press. Stay off the drugs and heavy drink and these will be a new entry into rock history. We nearly put the history book away 👍

Fil , Paul McCartney spoke to what you mentioned about downloads. He and friends would buy an album and study the cover pictures,lyrics or whatever was on the cover before the bus got 'em home where they played it. So I liked you bringing that up and forward. Peace.

ok so im a young black guy from boston right, and ive always been open minded to different music genres especially rock but primarily ive always listened to rap and hip-hop greta ven fleet has opened the door up to so much good music from them and old rock bands like led zep, and honestly being new to the genre i think i like gvf sound more

I just heard "Heat Above" last night. Im just about 24 hours in and Im a solid Greta fan. They are going to be in concert Aug 5th and 6th pretty close to where I live.
