Brock Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo play quarterback at the same exact level. This might be surprising to hear with all the hype surrounding Purdy, but if you look at their stats and how Kyle Shanahan structured the offense, there is no difference between the two QBs. In what ways are they so similar? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Brock Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo’s play on the San Francisco 49ers.

The fact that a rookie, who was the last person chosen in the NFL draft, had stats that were "almost identical " to a nine year seasoned veteran, has to say something more than what was put forth in this video.

So Brock Purdy, in his rookie year essentially had similar stats to Jimmy G, who was a 9th year QB who had started in a Super Bowl. This to me is a strong indicator that Purdy has a lot of yet untapped upside potential, given what he was able to do in his rookie year. Brock Purdy is still a young work-in-progress that realistically can improve greatly with experience, while Jimmy G clearly has a large enough body of work for us to know Jimmy G's true ceiling. I'd happily take Brock Purdy over Jimmy G at this point in their respective careers.

That's because Purdy can avoid the rush, hes very evasive. Jimmy is a statue that has to force throws to avoid sacks. Jimmy is also unwilling to look downfield so his options are limited. I appreciate you and your work Alex. A simple comment cannot contain the things I disagree with this video on, and would instead say that the way Kurt Warner & JT O'Sullivan broke down Jimmy vs how they break down Brock - and the words they use when doing so - say everything that needs to be said. When watching Jimmy, we hear lot of, "I'm not in the QB room, so I don't know exactly what they are teaching, but (X, Y, and Z) doesn't make sense to me." When they talk about Brock, not only is that never said, but the exact opposite. They comment on the fluidity of his movements and processing and how it all fits together. When Brock makes mistakes, there isn't that bewilderment in tone and word choice which they use with Jimmy, but rather they say they understand why the mistake was made and in processing and how they wpuld like to see it done better from the perspectives of veteran QBs. Not a sexy one sentence hot take, but 🤷‍♂️. Much love.

He does objectively have some things Jimmy doesn't. He is insanely quick, like his 10 yard split is the same as Christian McCaffrey, super high percentile of QBs, only a few active QBs have better 10 yard splits than BCB. That gives him high key incredible mobility to make plays outside the pocket, juke defenders, etc...While his arm isn't special or anything, he at least appears to the eye to have a bigger arm than Jimmy and or more willing to go deep. Maybe it's not Herbert 60 yards down the field, but it's good enough for 25-30 yard passes down the field, which Jimmy rarely attempted. That said, I of course want Trey Lance to get a shot and see what the 49ers have or don't have with him, and I don't want the 49ers to get rid of Lance when they could have something special.

If Jimmy had a slightly better arm the Niners have a ring already so yeah Mac could have been perfect because of Shanahan's play calling ..Let's hope Lance turns out okay at least...the Niners have too good a team to not have a good player behind center and we just found out from the Eagles that a middling QB like Hurts can get MVP votes with the right team around him

One thing that's hard to diagnose on tape but is absolute a huge plus for Purdy over Jimmy is his ability to adjust placement mid-throw. The issue is Jimmys career as a whole. Almost everyone said Jimmy was having a great season in relief of Trey THIS YEAR but Jimmy’s been here for half a decade, we knew it couldn’t last. We’ve seen the lows of Jimmy (a 30 year old veteran), and the fact that Jimmy’s arguable “best” is Mr Irrelevant rookie QBs current, with room to improve, I think there’s much more reason to be excited. I think the key differences between the two based on the eye test are: 1) Poise. Jimmy is generally thought of as a game manager due to his limited upside and yet makes a ton of turnover-worthy plays due to panicking. Brock certainly had his own lucky breaks but you would expect more of a difference between a 7th round rookie and a vet. 2) Mobility. The ability to just extend plays behind the line of scrimmage is so valuable in today's NFL. While Brock isn't gonna scare defenses running downfield, the few times when his o-line lets him down don't automatically lead to a sack or turnover like they do with Jimmy.
@t4d0W
@t4d0W 11 месяцев назад
QB mobility is a huge factor IMO in Shanahan's offense. Sometimes the pocket will be messy but the Niners talents around the perimeter are so good that you gotta give em a lil more time to get the space when the defense coverage is onto them. Trey Lance held that promise but that is only on paper if he can't keep building reps on the field due to injuries.

Great breakdown. Would love to address several points. 1. The defense argument - the defense absolutely reached a new level once Purdy stepped in, and their added production reflected in the score. But it's also true that with the offense rolling even more, the defense was given more opportunity to beat up on opposing teams once they fell behind. I think it plays both ways here, not just "the defense gave the ball to Purdy more often." 2. The INTS - Jimmy and Purdy both finished with the same TD-INT ratio. But I don't think that's fair at all. One of Purdy's INTs was a deep shot while mopping up a blowout to the Chiefs at the end of the game. Another was a 50/50 ball on a fourth down in plus territory that ended up being an arm punt. One bounced off his receiver's chest, and the last was flat-out a bad throw. He was way, way more secure with the ball in the air than Garoppolo, which is a huge reason the offense felt better. Of course, in football, you're going to get INT-worthy throws that fall safely and great throws that get picked, but I think he has a little more here than he's gotten credit for. 3. Statistical regression is (probably!) incoming, as you said - it's hard for a quarterback on a half-season hot streak to keep that up full-time into next year (see, Jimmy G [2017] and Geno Smith [2022]). But Purdy's also a first-year rookie. That bodes much better for his long-term ceiling than Jimmy G entering his, what, ninth year in the league? Thanks for the continued great content. Looking forward to the next one.

The most level-headed analysis I've heard so far. The reaction to Purdy is just like the reaction to Jimmy in 2017. Jimmy was better than what we had before so we exaggerated his ability. Purdy is a little better than Jimmy, definitely more mobile, but that doesn't make him a top-10 or top-15 QB in the NFL. Thanks for addressing the dropped picks. I can't stand when people say "dropped int's don't count" when Purdy's throwing an inordinate amount of passes right into defenders' hands.

As a niners fan I can say the problem is Shanahan wants to be QB 1, 2 and 3. Even if a QB makes a awesome play, if it's not what Kyle wanted, Kyle gets mad... But it's not, and will never be, his fault that 4 QBs got hurt the year. He usually goes through at least 2 QBs per season. If Jimmy stays healthy this year, after the foot surgery, a lot of questions have to be made

0:49 Yes, their 2022 stats are essentially the same. However, the crucial context there is that we're comparing Purdy's rookie season to essentially Garoppolo's *best* season. Those stats pretty much represent the ceiling for Garoppolo, but for Purdy they're, if not exactly the floor, something we'd expect him to build off of. I also disagree with your point that Purdy can't progress beyond his first read or two on a play; I've watched other analysis videos that show numerous examples where Purdy makes important plays by finding his 3rd read - he did this twice for TDs in the wild-card game alone. He also has demonstrated excellent ability to learn from mistakes both from one game to the next and within games. I agree that Garappolo was a good quarterback overall. I think Purdy demonstrated he was approximately as good as Garappolo, but with the potential to get even better. Ultimately, the reason the 49ers let Jimmy walk had nothing to do with hating or undervaluing him - it was simply that they figured Purdy offered them at least the same capability at a fraction of the cost, and they've got plenty of other uses for that money.

I don't think this is Jimmy's season, if you look at it, this is really just his 3rd year as a starter and you really can see progress in his play, he noticeably had less ints, was more loose with the football and took better care of it, also I've always felt shanahan has restrained jimmy into a script, limiting his play, so, he definitely can improve a lot, as he is probably about to enter his prime.... But oh well, it's just time to watch and see for ourselves

A lot of teams wish their 1st round QBs could measure up to Jimmy Garoppolo after half a rookie season. Way too early to start declaring things like "Brock likes to hold onto the ball too long", as if that's not something every rookie QB goes through.
@t4d0W
@t4d0W 11 месяцев назад
I agree on this. Jimmy played the best standard of what a pocket QB should do in the modern NFL to attack the middle of the field that even most first round rookies can't do. So if Brock is capable of doing that while adding better pocket mobility and recognizing coverages better, he's prepped to surpass that floor that many 1st~3rd round QBs can't even clear.
@joeynickles7962
@joeynickles7962 10 месяцев назад

Great video. It's definitely going to ruffle some feathers since Brock's wholesome story is still in it's honeymoon phase, but I'm glad you put this out there, because it's not that outlandish of an opinion. The folks at PFF were essentially saying the same thing this entire time as his passing grade charts similarly to what Jimmy's output was, while acknowledging he did add slight value with his mobility. I'm a 49ers fan, and while his rise has been really exciting for the last pick of the draft, I don't have a feeling he'll be the next megastar in the league at the QB position. He's on a dynamite roster with maybe the best offensive coach in the league. And that's ok, as it doesn't invalidate what he's done as he's still miles better than some other guys that have been around with Shanahan like Beathard or Hoyer. I'm really just happy he's on a rookie deal, and I will say that watching the games I felt a lot more comfortable with him in the saddle than Lance. Jimmy G sadly wore out his welcome with the fanbase, but if the 49ers have another younger, cheaper, and not injured riddled Jimmy QB than that's a win. He's already injured though, so who knows how his recovery will shake out. I'm hoping for more of the same, and that he's not a flash in the pan. Appreciate the spotlight on the red and gold. Cheers mate.

A rookie in this system is great, he played to what was expected. He ran the system with his strengths. For a scheme that is complex Shanahan, this was expected. I didn't expect him to do more. And the CPOE (while a little under ~3%) proves that. That's why we got Trey. The QB should run the scheme and exceed it. Good schemes, good ideas, but inflexible execution. He didn't just magically land a QB that plays exactly like the last one. He crammed his latest QB into the same damn system. Jimmy G shrinks in clutch moments, and Big Cock Brock showed absolutely no fear as a rookie 3rd stringer during a deep playoff run. Didn't get in his head and would have won that game if he didn't get injured. Jimmy G on the other hand lost to the Chiefs in a superbowl that probably 70% of the qbs in the league would have won.

Great detailed analysis, but the key here is realizing the whole with Purdy vastly out weighs the parts, even when factoring the several things he does exceptionally well. As a rookie, he was performing as a top five quarterback towards the end of the year, and if his surgery and rehab go well, there’s no reason to believe he won’t be even better this year, if the 49ers really commit to him as the guy. What I wonder with Kyle Shanahan is whether he can overcome the problem his father Mike Shanahan always seemed to face after coaching Steve Young and John Elway - which is how to commit to a less than hall of fame talent at QB long enough and completely enough to elevate an average physical talent player to a championship level. Mike Shanahan always had excellent offenses, but couldn’t elevate Brian Griese or Jake Plummer or Jay Cutler or RG3 to their full potential. Kyle almost did it with Matt Ryan, and it all fell apart after he left Atlanta. Bill Walsh to an extent got lucky in that his own coaches wouldn’t support switching to Young from Montana, and instead of going in the tank when Walsh was jerking him around Montana’s competitive nature sparked him to his best years as a starter keeping Young on the bench. Kyle Shanahan and Purdy might be able to do something amazing together, but not if Shanahan views him as a disposable/replaceable cog.

Amazing!! Now I know they will advance to Superbowl then lead against Chiefs until 4Q! Purdy gives 49ers massive amount of cap space so they can bring other high-priced FAs until his(or Lance's) second contract = there window is 2023/24/25. As always, huge thx for your detailed explanations. Yet another true gem.

I would love to see one of these on Brady or Montana before either ever won a superbowl.

Well Tom Brady has seven super bowls and Joe has four both of them being MVP so you sound slow

ALEX‼️ Thank you for making this video. It seems like an unspoken rule in the sports world to make any criticism on the “godly” Kyle Shanahan. Brock Purdy is a good QB, but he’s already older than Trey, and he just had a surgery that could really set him back!! Not to mention, CMC really really helped him. Purdy is good, but I don’t think he’ll ever be an MVP, or maybe even win a super bowl. This is coming from a 9ers fan. Jimmy always played like a rookie to me, made the same mistakes rookies made, even though he was 30 years old! The funny thing is, Brock found the most success when he was moving outside of the scheme and of what Shanahan wanted him to do 😂

Aye Shadow good to hear from you again brother. Jimmy was underrated, Brock was overrated. Good he grow? Sure, and I hope he does. But the hate was way too strong for Jimmy for everything he accomplished

Wait. Do you think the 49ers currently have a QB on their roster that CAN be an MVP?!??!?

Little doubt that Purdy went to the right scheme for him. That being said, why Purdy over Garoppolo? Former is on a rookie contract while the latter was expensive and injury prone. Pretty simple.

Would have liked more A-B comparisons of game film rather than a PFF summary to fit your narrative.

Regardless on me thinking Shanahan gets a bit overrated it's wild to me that many fans don't think coaching matters. Shouldn't it be a coaches job to make sure no matter what player is playing in any position that the team can still function? Don't get me wrong your video is a great analysis about how the two players compare so I feel the issue is more a psych eval on fandom. They are never all satisfied regardless of the situation, many just like change for change sake (though I do feel some coaches/front offices do the same thing sometimes). That very much runs with my theory that there is a reason professionals run teams and not fans, the lack of attention to detail or people skills. The real question for the 49er's is if spending all that capital on Lance was worth it. Can he truly elevate that offense regardless of how QB friendly it may be? And as well what are the current injury statuses of Lance and Purdy? Because at least early on that may play a factor.

Brock being the same as a nine year "ok" QB is not a flex

I think you’re seeing this the way. This was Brock’s first 7 games he’s playing on a rookie contract. So while he is only slightly better than the vet, due to the context of the situation, I would consider him way more valuable to have on the roster since he will develop, Jimmy is already a Vet
