This film breakdown analyzes San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s ability to only throw to just the middle of the field. Garoppolo is a good quarterback, and has won a lot of games, but is quite limited in where he can successfully throw the ball. I know where he’s targeting, you know where he’s targeting, every last defender in the entire NFL knows where he’s targeting, but still, he’s able to play successfully. How does he do it? How do defenses counter? And how do the 49ers counter those counters? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Inside the 40 yard Pass triangle 🔼 QB are in control and credited 75% as they can force self defense catching or hit them in the throat with the ball.. On the edges and outside its 75% receiver credited with little on the qb. Every nfl qb can pass arching sideline balls letting wr track them down and run under it or 50/50 physically take it out if the air. Espn and some of current style protestors are backwards pushing what they want the game to be over the last decade. West coast schemes want to beat the defense before the snap. They like to use vet qb so they can pre snap read and run routes into the soft areas of the defense.. You can't scheme up one or two route reads blindly into unknowns defense so you have to trust the qb eyes to check them into the right pre snap call .

It’s insane how much he’s making per game for how he’s playing. Put Purdy in. 49ers are more than likely not SB material this year anyway. They have the roster for the most part, but too many injuries and an inconsistent and highly predictable qb doesn’t bode well. At least after the season is over they can get a good idea of what Purdy is made of. We already know what Jimmy is made of, and that juice ain’t worth the squeeze.
@rhmayer1
@rhmayer1 Год назад
@@bobstark4201 Take away Wk1, when Jimmy didn't play, and the 49ers are the #1 DVOA passing offense in the NFL right now, believe it or not. But if you include Wk1 then Patrick Mahomes moves ahead of the 49er's -Wk1 rating number, so Jimmy and the 49ers are more honestly the #2 DVOA passing offense. I like Brock Purdy. But you honestly think Purdy is ready to beat that? I think Jimmy's juice is worth squeezing. I'm not sour on him, despite his limitations. He helped take us to the NFCC last year, beating the #3 seed with #1 rated offense and the #1 seed, at their homes - with two throwing arm injuries. I don't think any QB in NFL history has gone as far with 2 throwing arm injuries. (Sure, he rode on other star player's successes. But he enabled those other players' successes.) And this year he's HEALTHY, playing well, and we have even more weapons on both sides of the ball. Also, he may not be a great passer, but he's an ELITE team leader. Not enough is talked about the importance of QB leadership. Jimmy instills confidence in his teammates. They've said they'd walk through walls for Jimmy. Ever hear anyone say that about Aaron Rodgers? Jimmy has a short memory and doesn't get emotional after one of those WTF bad passes or INT's. He doesn't get all upset and spiral down making more mistakes, like Dak Prescott in last year's Wildcard game, who made some bad passes and then more mistakes, spiraling, couldn't dig his team back out of the hole, made more mistakes until that doozy at the end. (It wasn't all on Dak; plenty of dumb mistakes by the rest of the team.) Jimmy comes back after bad passes often with a string of beauties. He's led a number of impressive comebacks even after making bad throws, like that Wk18 Rams game last year - down 17 pts. and helped lead the team back to victory, propelling them into the playoffs with a RELENTLESS attitude, now confident they could come back even if trailing on the scoreboard. People don't realize how important that kind of attitude is, how it plays a role in success. Jimmy helps lead that relentless attitude. Jimmy always plays cool and aggressively, winning or losing. He's rock steady emotionally. And he has a short memory for his teammate's mistakes, too. Where AR12 punishes his receivers who drop his passes by refusing to throw to them again even when they're open, and overtly chooses favorites, Jimmy rebuilds his receiver's confidence and throws right back to them, and usually spreads the ball around well. Jimmy brings out the best from his teammates. AR12's selfish attitude resulted in Jimmy outperforming the league MVP in the critical 2nd half of that playoff game last year with more completions, higher cmpl%, yardage and points. I think Dak's and Aaron's poor leadership skills compared to Jimmy's better leadership skills are one of the reasons those better QB's lost to us and have a worse post-season record than Jimmy's. Jimmy also has good reads on defenses and makes good audible calls to change blocking assignments for run plays, that he doesn't get enough credit for - not just a decent passing QB. Jimmy has his limitations. But he also has qualities like very good leadership that don't show up in the stats, but may help explain why he has a strong W-L record.
@bobstark4201
@bobstark4201 Год назад
@@rhmayer1 Leadership skills are intangibles and are highly subjective, especially when saying he "instills confidence in his teammates". And if you want to discuss confidence, let's do that. Many times when Jimmy is pressured or sacked, the next play is a skiddish one where he is prone to making mistakes. I remember last year, watching a game with friends. Jimmy got sacked the previous play and as he hikes the ball he looks completely frantic and I say to my friend, "he's freaking out, he better not throw an interception", but that is exactly what he did. That's not a quality you want in a starter, especially one of his tenure. One would have to be blind to say that Jimmy is the future of this team. We all know he's not. Jimmy knows he's not. The owners and the coaches know he's not hence why they were wanting to let him go and eventually just made him a backup, exactly where Bill B. kept him. There's also a reason why none of the other teams picked him up when they had the chance, in spite of the apparent qualities you believe he has. Because they all see past the success the Niners have had and intelligently don't equate that with Jimmy being a top tier qb. He is highly inconsistent. He will be near flawless with you one game and near completely fall apart the next. Either way he walks off smiling, but if you made 250k each game for just showing up, wouldn't you? Just to prove a point, watch all of Jimmy's fumbles and interceptions the past 3 years. Also notice how so many of those turnovers came in key situations bc assumedly the pressure got to him. Jimmy is not usually key in the clutch, though he has had his moments. But that's Jimmy. He will never give you consistency. If you manage him properly, surround him with an all-star cast and don't expect too much of him, sure you can win games with him, maybe even a SB. But that says more about how he's managed and the players around him than it says anything about him. Honestly, how the Niners play football completely flies in the face of conventional wisdom. They don't rely on their QB, they make him one part of a very large machine, which is why people mistakenly attribute success to Jimmy, because that's what you do in football when an offense has success, you assume the QB is the force behind that. But the niners have a "next man up" philosophy where each player takes their turn in carrying the team. Put Purdy in and look to the future, see if he's part of it or not since we won't be able to know if Trey will be. But one thing is for certain, Jimmy has been and will always be a good backup quarterback, not a franchise starter.
@rhmayer1
@rhmayer1 Год назад
@@bobstark4201 I don't disagree with your points but I think you just take them a bit too far. You say he's highly inconsistent, and will never give you consistency. What game this year has he played poorly? Even in their losses this year he's played rather well but the defense more notably played poorly. All their wins this year have been blow-outs and their losses were mostly defensive blunders due to lots of starters out, injured. For his 6 and a half games this season he has 11 TD passes (tied for 11th) to 4 INT's (tied for 10th) which is good, not great - almost a 3:1 ratio. With Jimmy's #2 DVOA passing game efficiency you really want to put Brock Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant 2022 - the final pick of the 2022 draft, in now - in the home stretch of the season??!? Purdy hardly knows the playbook and has zero NFL experience. You can't be serious! I think you and I may disagree about why the 49ers wanted to move away from Jimmy. It was not primarily because of his inconsistency as I think you argue, but rather because of his injury-prone history. And c'mon, the reason no team was interested in Jimmy was because he had shoulder surgery and NOBODY is going to trade for an injury-prone injured QB until they see how the recovery goes. I think a number of teams saw Jimmy Wk2 or Wk3 and regret not having made a move. Jimmy certainly has limitations but being injury-prone is/was his primary perceived limitation, I believe. (And look how far he was able to help take the team last year with TWO throwing arm injuries.) As I said before, this year he's healthy AND has even more offensive weapons to further diminish the impact of his other limitations. His long ball is also underrated, or overstated as a limitation. I know he's not consistent throwing downfield - but apparently no one else is either, at least last year. Another surprising statistic, from last year, was that he had the highest Cmpl% in the league for passes 40 yds and more. Yeah, he gets a bit skiddish when getting sacked and pressured, when the O-line is not providing good pass pro. But I've seen him come back from bad throws a lot more than spiraling down. He's led a lot of comebacks. When I refer to his leadership and instilling confidence in his teammates I didn't just make that up from my own subjective observations. It's what's been reported by the players on the team a number of times. It's an established reputation for him, here in the SF bay area. (Not sure if you're in the local area.) Some NFL QB, I forgot who, got a lot of press coverage last week for going over to a dejected receiver who dropped a ball. The sports pundits were making a big deal about the QB boosting the frustrated receiver and how special that was, showing great leadership. That wouldn't even get reported here; that's routine for Jimmy. He's highly motivating. Even CMC talked about how well Jimmy really leads in the huddle when asked what he thinks about his new QB. HIs leadership is really not subjective. He's always supportive and crediting his teammates at the podium, and never points to teammates after losses. (He never mentioned the defense after the blowout loss to the Chiefs despite it being the worst 49er defensive performance since 2006, allowing 6 TD's out of 7 Rams drives, interrupted only by a missed FG attempt, and then allowing 4 consecutive TD drives. Instead Jimmy just talked about the whole team not playing well despite his offense putting up 23 points, only 1 point less than Josh Allen and the Bills put up to beat the Chiefs the prior week.) There's just no comparison to someone like Aaron Rodgers, who's a magnificent future HOFer for sure but just terrible as a leader, IMO, and I think his poor leadership performance shows on the field and in the score occasionally. Jimmy also makes key audible adjustments after reading defenses to shift blocking assignments for run plays - he makes significant contributions not just to the passing game, which he doesn't get enough credit for. I don't think there's any denying that Jimmy saved the season after Trey went down Wk2. They're lucky they didn't trade him and would not be making a SB run without him. They most likely would not have been willing to make the 4 draft picks trade for CMC if they didn't think they could go all the way this year - with Jimmy. And I don't know any other backup QB in the league with a 4-2 post season record. He's a seasoned vet and starter. Last year he was Top Ten in both QBR and Passer Rating - at or near the bottom, but still Top Ten. All your criticisms about Jimmy's play are valid, just not as bad as you describe IMO - at least not that bad this year so far. I think only injuries will stop them from going all the way this year.

This was a pleasant surprise to wake up to. Thanks for highlighting my boy Alex. Jimmy definitely is limited, and folks rag on him a lot for it, but despite those limitations he still finds a way to play well with Shanahan's help to be a viable starter in the league. That Cover 1 robber for a while has been what usually nukes Jimmy into a turnover, as he just routinely seems to get fooled by the linebacker lurking over the middle or the defensive back coming downward for an INT. It can be frustrating to watch the same turnover over, and over again. I did like that in the Atlanta game last weekend the 49ers took more shots deep, and had success with a few, but they were wiped out by penalties or drops. Hopefully now with CMC in the mix things will get easier in some ways for Jimmy.

He has a step, and has to flatten out his route which allows the corner to play through his hands and force the incomplete. Coulda been caught with a better timed jump (high point). Jimmy has a great skill set for this kind of play style, prolly one of the best outside of Brady. Not a huge arm but good anticipation, a quick release and good touch (for the most part). His main problem is when he tries to play Superman, I think his mindset overestimates his physical capabilities at times but he gets more hate imo than he deserves. I don’t really understand the hate either for someone who’s just a genuinely good guy but people actively root for him to fail for whatever reason 🤷

They use so much pre snap motion I wonder if thats part of the problem with Kyle's inability to win from behind. When down and running hurry up it's seemingly more difficult to do all the pre snap stuff that helps a QB breakdown coverage and gain an edge. Just a thought I'm no Alex though. One thing I definitely know is I'm stoked Josh Allen is on the Bills, and opposing defenses need to cover the entire field, Go Bills!!!!

What’s important to remember here, is the middle of the field is the hot zone, the most congested, but also where most balls are thrown to across the league. . Jimmys distribution has more to do with Kyles ball-control play design than anything else. Jimmy wasn’t drafted as high as the 2nd round because he can’t throw a big boy pass - and this “limited ability” assertion is well overcooked by now , based on ignorance of both the position , and league knowledge. Jimmy is a winner, short and sweet .. his biggest hindrance hasn’t been limited ability , it’s injury .. and we could describe almost any QB outside of the few top studs as “limited”, couldn’t we .. lastly , his pass catchers have let him down mult times so far this season , most recently ATL.

Wish he could fix that but in 6 years it doesn't seem to be the case. Now with Lance we have the opposite problem even when he returns healthy next year. How do you fix all that? It's not like you can just pluck out a solid QB out of thin air. It seems to be our unicorn. We could have drafted Mahomes instead of Solomon Thomas but that's done. What do we do now?
