Broke It Already - PV Fault Code on KTM 300 XC 2023

Took bike out for ride with my son and had the Fi lights blinking when idling. Rode the bike for almost 2 hours and bike ran great, but anytime it would idle or have very little to no throttle the Fi light would start to blink. Video goes into how I diagnosed the error and what was attempted to fix it.

Thanks for the reminder that I need to pass on the 2023 and see if things improve for 2024. I keep getting drawn in with the idea of a fresh new 300 to replace my 21 XC. 3 of my buddies have TBI’s and all have had flashing codes. The motor runs great but not sure I want to deal with the visits to the dealer for clearing error codes or doing software updates.

This error is from hitting start button while bike is running. KTM has since come out with an update so it doesnt cause the error anymore and people are close to getting the ECU accessable for adjusting the mapping. 2024 will be very similar, just will have the updated flash software the first bikes didnt have but can get now.

I picked up the same bike yesterday. 10 minute test ride and I noticed the same problem as yours. 5 blinks at idle. dealer did PV reset procedure with their computer and cleared code. I rode for another 10-15 minutes and then 1.5 hours today, no issues. Bike felt faster and idled better after code was cleared. I think PV wasn't operating properly while code was active.

I just got my 2023 125 xc today. I just hit 1h on it and noticed this light come on as well. Was running it around for the break in period. Have to say with all the issues that I had with the dealership as soon as I bought it now this I'm pretty pissed. This is my first new bike.

Have you been following highlandcycles on utube? He has this same bike an is going though it. I told him about your issue an video to see what his take on it is. Hopefully you get this issued fixed fast. Good luck.

Yep been following him for a long time. Thanks for letting him know, but not sure anything can be done with the current things I have at home. Ill be going to a dealer I trust to have them look it over quickly tomorrow. Hopefully have an update for others then!

We have the same problem, rode the bike for the first time Sunday and after 30 mins this happened. Local KTM dealer wants $160 to run a diagnostic test, if it proves a manufacturing fault they will refund the payment. Not sure we can prove its a KTM problem, other than its happening to all KTM 2 strokes.

Ktm has a new update via software flash to fix this exact problem, use that with your dealer to get them to fix it. If they still want to argue the. Just call ktm and have them deal with the dealer for you

I've been trying to get my 23 250xc to run well enough to ride for 9 months. Dealers are not capable of proper diagnostic on these bikes.

Who's bright idea was it to change a rock solid mechanical system that has been working for 2 decades to electronic. Every time they take a step forward, its two steps back. Perfect bike would be a TBI, with mechanical power valve and kick-start.

that would be a solid bike you describe, but the electronic PV does make the map switch actually something you want to use. There is quite a difference between the white and green map, and thats largely due to being able to essentially swap your PV springs with the push of a button. This really becomes helpful if you have a hare scramble where half the race is wide open desert and then the other half is technical rock.

@@joshmundy Ya that is a cool feature, just not sure I love it enough for the extra complications it brings. If you look at the mild map on the older carb models, it was a solid 5HP off the top, which is pretty significant too.

A bug when you push the starter button when it is running. I believe KTM is working on it. A few other channels mentioned the problem, cause, and no fix yet.

Alright if that is a one time issue. If it is a repeating issue then KTM needs to correct it and also supply computer programs with access for more control with the ECU directly to the end user.

I agree. I am working on a cheap and effective way for users to inspect and clear the codes themselves, more to come after I test my theories

I had the same code on my bike. I reset the position per the manual and the code continued to blink. Put 10 hours on it like this, everything was fine. I took it into the dealer to get a new hour meter yesterday, and he said the only codes that pulled were a tip over sensor. Anyways, they cleared the codes and it stopped showing up at idle, but I haven't been out for a ride yet to test.

@@wfo_racer I call BS on that code, or the diag tool wasn't updated or something. There's no way KTM would continuously flash a code every time you drop a bike that's meant to be dropped.

from Service Manger: "If the problem occurs again I won’t charge to delete the code, the reflash should take care of the problem and a case is started with KTM tech support. The 2023 has a new switch different from the 2020." wfo: KTM Claim has been opened so now they know and will attempt fix when IDK

I agree! I work in IT, i know all about always avoiding Rev1. Luckily I have a very reliable YZ250X I wont be selling just incase this turns into a headache, but I am optimistic it wont be an ongoing issue

5 slow blinks I have same issue (code) but at all rpms. My manual for my 23 XC 300 says Exhaust Valve Error code and bike is in the shop as of today.

Let me know what they say. I have not heard of it at all RPM range. Did you try the PV reset at all? Do you think your PV is working correctly?

@@joshmundy Yes I went through the power valve reset procedure heard it (servo?) try to move through its range to recal but did not clear code. It feels seat of the pants like it is working ok or at least opening. Now remember sometime at shutoff I get a little not loud backfire or swoosh sound as the bike shuts off. .

This is really similar to powervalve reset issues the tbi TM bikes are having….. both have tbi & both have electronic power valves

I get what you are saying, but this is a race focused bike. If you want quieter and more trail focused you would want to look at a XC-W or TE

Yes. The dealer can clear fault codes. Also, KTM has an update out for the TBI bikes that also corrects this error so it does not show up again for accidently hitting the start button while bike is running

@@kellybrown6988i have a 2022 yz250x and a 2023 husqvarna tx300 and i will say the only area the yz shines over the husky is with its simplicity of some parts like the tech, everything can be fixed by you, on the other hand with the husky its a little more complicated but in my opinion its worth it.

Was the bike still running as it should ? Or did recalibrating the pv get it running correctly again and are you simply left with the fault code ? Eg can it still be ridden while displaying the fault code

Dude it was running awesome! Super crispy and always responsive. I didn’t get the PV to reset but it was blinking entire ride and always was good. Should be going into dealer tomorrow

@@joshmundy To be precise the code was cleared and I had no light blinking when I drove it up my truck bed ramp. Got home rode 1 mile down dirt road NOW steady ON without blinking! so yeah lit up always gonna put tape over it until KTM has a software change/reflash fix

At time 5:25 the left handle bar light was green

Yeah that’s when connector first plugs in. The manual makes it sound like you will hear the PV adjust, which it never did until throttle back to 0, and that after 5 seconds of connecting is when it will turn green and stay green. Green was only on for a second when it first is connected and everything is powering up
