Where are you grounded to when you are welding? I don't see the ground going directly to the part you are welding on. Are you grounding through you lathe? Surley not, that would damage the lathe in many ways. Maybe someone else removed the ground from the part before you turned the lathe on? There at the last but it sure look like you went straight from welding to turning on the lathe, Hmm I don't know . Other than that, a fine job from my point of view.
I dont think this kind of welding will never successfull because mechanical propertise of original shuft iron is too much different that wellding joint hence it will has lower capability to high tourgue , it would be better to make the thread connection in such a manner that revesily twested from tourque direction
