This vintage chronograph was full of bad surprises. The restoration of the Landeron 48 watch caliber was not a simple task. I love to work on this type of vintage chronograph but this one tested my skills. Hope you will enjoy this restoration

You should invest in some 'Evapo-rust" for any iron or steel parts that are corroded, it reacts with the rust softening/dissolving it and leaving the part with a protective coating on it. Will save your cleaning solution from becoming dirty and make it last longer lol 👍

Amazing work my friend, I’ve never seen that technique to balance the balance wheel, very cool. I also noticed that you didn’t use a rust remover?

Thank you for this beautiful video on the rather difficult restoration of a very cool watch. Apart from you talking too much - as usual 😉- there is one thing I do not get: at around 16:40 you put the balance staff onto a tool that seems to be not equilibrated correctly. I know a similar tool from my slot cars, and if you do not center it correctly, you might as well do without. However, it is maybe only the shadow that makes it look like this.
@FrenchWatchCollector
@FrenchWatchCollector 11 месяцев назад
Sorry for the talking but it is my style. For the balancing of the balance wheel it is because the camera is at an angle. This is why it looks like it is not aligned
@ethanmenezprat

A little tip. Using à glass pen is better to get off the rust than a brass brush the glass pen is harder than the brass and don't scratch the métal
@FrenchWatchCollector
@FrenchWatchCollector 11 месяцев назад
Yes I have a glass pen but I find it scratches the parts a bit more

Tres Bien.. That was a great restoration of a vintage chrono. Yes..a Lot of work to clean up the rust etc...to get it to function at all.. plus the repair to the balance. Great work and great looking watch. What kind of strap did you put on it..? - Excellent work. Thanks for the tour..!!

As a beginner at servicing watches, I noticed that when you were disassembling the balance wheel assembly to remove the broken balance staff, you marked the relative position of the hairspring stud on the balance wheel with a marker. Is it necessary to similarly mark the relative position of the impulse jewel to the balance wheel when removing the roller table or is that an adjustment that can be compensated for when correcting the beat error?
@FrenchWatchCollector
@FrenchWatchCollector 11 месяцев назад
The impulse jewel normally is at 90deg compare to the spoke of the balance wheel. This is why I don't mark it because it is most of the time in this position
@fredruthven4566
@fredruthven4566 11 месяцев назад
@@FrenchWatchCollector Thanks! That's good to know.
@hockeyrd99
@hockeyrd99 11 месяцев назад
@@fredruthven4566 Just make sure you check it before you remove it. Sometimes they are not at 90deg. Also, as a beginner you may want to mark it anyway so you don't put it on upside down and have the roller jewel facing away from the pallet. You may also want to check the hairspring stud position before pushing it on. Lots of things can go wrong if you slip trying to turn it with a tiny screw driver like he did.

Great work and great video! One thing that jumped out at me is that your lift angle is set incorrectly to 52, but should be 42 for a Landeron 48. This different (10 degrees) will make a pretty significant different in the amplitude. So the amplitude is really not going to be close to 340. Nevertheless, great results!
@FrenchWatchCollector
@FrenchWatchCollector 11 месяцев назад
You are right but 340 is too high and with the correct lift angle it will be around 300 which is good

Fantastic revival on something that could have easily been discarded. If you get chance on a future video please show how main spring and barrel arbour are connected (the power for everything else). I have never quite seen how they are attached, I understand there is a hook which links them together but on most visuals they are clipped into place and I'm usually left uncertain if they are even linked! Thanks

Hello Dear Frenchwatchmaker, I have just watched your video fitting a new balance staff and fully overhauling this Landeron 48 . I have one with a broken balance staff and needs full overhaul but there is NO RUST ( luckily) So how much do you charge for this repair, I would like to know before I send you my watch for repair?
