Kitano is one of the greatest contemporary directors. For me, his masterpiece is Sonatine. Hana Bi and Violent Cop are also stunning.

Watched this as young kid 11 or 12, stuck with me through life, had friends choose the criminal life, I saw no future and went the other way,no mater high you reach, this movie taught me you will always fall in that world ✌

Well... He was mocked and not taken seriously first in Japan when he started movies because he was primarly a comedian making stand up, then when he win prices in Europe he was taken srsly.

One of the things that threw me off about this movie was how organised the Mafia was in comparison to the Yakuza. It made the Mafia look like assassins. One of my fav movies regardless tho

He's amazing in ''Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,'' but his blonde, depressing, depiction of Zatoichi was heartless, and banal. It showed no initiative, no creativity except perhaps to dye the hair white, and then foolishly to interpret Zatoichi's blindness as a ruse.
