I used to watch Doris McMillan on Channel 7. I remember when she broke the story. I was surprised to learn about the circumstances regarding her birth. I had no idea she was mixed. This was decades ago and probably the first time I became aware of "brown war babies."

I feel very sorry for all the babies that would be adopted because the mothers must give them away !!

There were also a lot of “brown babies” born in post WWll Italy to Italian women and African American soldiers. Years ago, Ebony magazine did a feature story on the subject.

It happened anywhere in the world where there's a U.S. military installation -- and continues to this very day! My husband was born in The Philippines to a black G.I. father (Air Force) and Filipina mother back in 1958. He was adopted when he was three years old by a black airman and his wife while stationed at Clark AFB in Angeles City.

England too and many of the GI's wanted to marry their overseas girlfriends but were not allowed.

@@ilovegoodsax and plenty of white American GI's fathered children too. The difference with them they would have been allowed to marry their girlfriends. In circa WWII the Balck GI's couldn't because of Jim Crow laws in the USA that were still on the books. Those laws got thrown out by the US Supreme Court in the 1960's thanks to Robert Kennedy and the Lovings.

I feel that I was luckier than many children born to service men and their wives. My parents were mixed race who met in Brooklyn during the war. Even so there was racial prejudice though I didn't feel it as deeply as those who lived in the south.

Julian Searcle, I like your response. Yes, humans come in all shapes, sizes and colors. God is the creator of all humans for those of us who say we believe in God. Thus, I believe and strongly believe that He knows what He wants. I suppose when we get down 6 ft under whether the color of one's would really matter. Even now, what really matters is peoples' hearts and how they love they have in them to give.

I have a good friend who was born in Germany and eventually adopted by an African American Parents in the early 1960’s . Found out that he was adopted just before he left for school. Jr. High one morning.

It's just so hard to understand how all these women were having sex w/o some kind of protection. Knowing what happens when you have sex, babies babies, babies. Knowing it was such a taboo, and knowing there would be dire consequence for their children.

Many wanted to marry their girlfriends in WWII but were refused permission from their commanding officers because of Jim Crow laws back in the USA. I read of one case in England where the couple stayed in touch for years but he could never get the money up to go back To England to marry her after he left the military.

@Nancy golf4life Your comment is so ignorant. She is telling you what she is and who her parents are. It really doesn't matter what you think she looks like. You will not change her DNA. ugh!!!
