Former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick talks about the 1996 MTV Unplugged concert that led to the reformation of the classic lineup with makeup. It also would lead to his departure from the band. Here he talks about that bittersweet experience on the "Rock Solid With Pat Francis" podcast uploaded on 6/5/15.

Bruce Kulick strikes me as a pretty solid guy and a good guitarist to boot-Gene and Paul are the worse off without him.

I always love hearing interviews from guys like Bruce who give a different perspective other than the current members. And in them you get a feeling of what it means to be in any band; KISS or any other band. You really get to see a side of the music industry which can make people realize being a star isn't what it's all cracked up to be. Album obligations, tour preparations, booking shows that don't conflict with other bands headling, ensuring the money that was generated for a show remains safe, etc. Best example being the Led Zeppelin concert show (The Song Remains The Same) from Madison Square Garden in 1975. During the concert, all the money mysteriously disappeared. To this day I don't think anyone knows who stole all the money that night.

MTM Unplugged is great. I'm glad to hear that Bruce doesn't have any animosity over the reunion tour

Carnival of Souls is a great album. Very under-appreciated album in the catalogue..

Yeah I agree. It's too bad they never toured for that,or made any videos,or pretty much any promotion for it. I don't think that any of those songs have been played live at all ever. And that's just a shame. I think this (End Of The Road) tour setlists should have included at least one song from every album! But no,we get the same old setlists that they've been doing for over 20 years, except with one or two different songs thrown in there to kind of mix it up a little.

Always thought Bruce was a class act. This just confirms it.

As an Ace fan since the 1970’s Bruce Kulick was the best replacement. Loved Mark ST.John,Vinnie Vincent. Again I love Ace,but Bruce brought it to another level.

The unplugged show was in 1995, not 1996. Anyway, great interview.

Sometimes I think gene and Paul only did the reunion tour because they saw how much money they can make if they put the makeup back on and have ace and peter

I read that Gene and Paul hired a consultant to figure out how to put the make up back on, everything that happened was carefully orchestrated, nothing was by chance.

They still would have done it if eric carrr was still alive. It would have played out welll because peter ended up quiting again. So eric carr. Would have came back in his fox character.just like the first time.

Bruce found out first hand ,the number one danger of being a replacement member of a legendary band. Unless the guy you replaced is dead, the band can bring back the original, classic and let’s face it more profitable member back at anytime

I wonder if Bruce thinks that the reunion would've still happened if Eric Carr hadn't died....

Eric was on the way out of KISS in 89/90/91 regardless of whether or not he had died. Read Paul's book.

I think all the members except the final 4 got screwed when it comes to the RRHOF I can’t help but think maybe the hall would have treated them better if Paul and Gene did not treat them as hired hands which is what they all were. After all the smoke clears Paul and Gene paid off the other 2 founding members For the name and paid the other 6 members To be hired hands.

They should of kept Bruce in the band and let him create his own character Not Tommy Faker
