Dan The second type is used in Wing Chun, but it comes down on the knee cap. The stop kick is nice on the knee to lock it back but it also works great on the hip bone. Similar to the utility of the shoulder stop. Check out some of the Vietnamese Wing Chun videos working on the mook jong. Are you looking for a custom made mook jong or octopus made to your specs of body ergonomics?? Let me know, I can help.

The real secret to this kick, once you've mastered the basic mechanics is to land your kick before your other foot lands on the floor. Watch Bruce's footage executing this kick on the heavy bag in his backyard in slow motion. You'll notice his foot lands almost simultaneously, but just milliseconds after the kick hits the target. Easier said than done, but worth mentioning.

LOL. It ain't a movie. If you don't have the second foot on the ground, you won't kick. You will simply push yourself away from your opponent

I was obsessed with the side-kick as a teen, I ended up running 2 martial arts clubs. The only thing I would add, if I may, in a full power side kick your body should be turned so you see it with one eye...on the kick side of course. Great stuff Dan!

Dan is the only guy (in my opinion) that can emulate each movement almost like Bruce. Its like watching the Dragon drilling in 2018. He (Brice Lee) was my first intructor, who taught me how to kick, just by watching his movies. I was 7 Years old. Thanks Dan for your knowledge and for keeping his legacy alive.

Hi Dan, I am very thankful for your time and knowledge within these videos, it has sparked an interest in me. I have noticed in some videos, you mention the principle of non-telegraphic strikes in which you attempt to not "queue" your opponent of an incoming motion. This is fascinating to me as many modern combatants do the exact opposite! My question to you, if it's not too much of an inconvenience, is what about the principle of "non-intention"? From my basic knowledge, I believe I understand that JKD is heavily influenced by Bruce Lee and with that said, does the philosophy of non-intention play into the teachings? Thank you
@TheXternalHunter
@TheXternalHunter 6 лет назад
Great vids Sifu. I always remember a TKD seminar where the side kick was described as drawing the letter C from resting and flowing up to the target. After trying this it seemed much more powerful than a hinge technique for that type of kick and felt less back force to yourself upon impact.

Thanks for the great video! Lee often used a counter rotation of his upper body to increase the power of his jump into side thrust kick. I don't like to do it myself because it moves my hands too far to the rear away from the line of riposte from my opponent but I do agree that the counter rotation does increase the power of the kick. Another point is that side kick, especially the sliding side kick that you demonstrated is especially effective when used as a counter stop hit against an opponent who has opened up his middle line as he charges you. Then his movement of his body center towards you adds power to your kick.
@Docinaplane

Very nice tutorial! Dan, your technique is excellent! Your tall student will be quite formidable once he learns to turn his hip as you do and do the kick in one motion. I've recently modified the long distance kick a little after watching Bruce in videos turn his upper body away from his opponent at the end of the kick. I realize I lose sight of the target at that moment, but as the kick is already there I don't think it's a problem then and it feels more powerful that way.

We'd called this lunging sidekick the "Thunderkick" back in the day, lol Power would be increased by (A)having the plant-foot land closer to his opponent while (B) flowing towards and exploding "through" target. Otherwise a lot of momentum is lost in the widened gap; momentum being the "booster" to an already powerful kick.. To that you add a stationary(immoveable)target(beam, wall or tree)to gradually build up ability to master the kick as Bruce Lee said that when you can kick a tree with your hardest kick without breaking your stance/losing balance-then you understand that kick(paraphrase). The latter is excellent for any kick intended to "dismiss" your opponent The 45 degree angle is a great example of the art and principal of JKD: each one is to use what works and is best for them; discarding what doesn't "fit"-hence "No Way" becomes "your way" making each JKD practitioner unique in his "honest expression"... I love it!

Ah ya!! Thank you for that amazing detail I always thought you bring the rear foot up and planted right next to the front foot but placing it behind your body that's where you get the power that's what generates the whipping action that makes that kick so powerful👏👏💪😎

Dear Dan, inspiring videos and definitely one of the most powerful sidekicks I've seen. I have a question cause I developed that kind of side kick for myself quite some time, but I'm not sure what is the better technique to combine power and speed. When you show at 4:23 how to contract and extend you body, it seems that your whole body has a little twist at around thirty degrees. The following sequence at around 4:28 it seems that your whole body has not that twist and is more of a natural side kick stance., also at 10:27. I tend to think that for more power and speed the little twist at around 30 degrees is better, cause you extend like a spiral afterwards, but in a lot of cases (what I have seen in different side kick tutorial videos) it comes with the danger of making a back kick and losing body control. What is the better way in your eyes, twisting your body also around 30 or 45 degrees or try not to twist your body and being straight parallel to your partner? Thanks for your advice, Carsten
