The leading straight punch is the backbone of all punching in Jeet Kune Do. It is used both as an offensive and defensive weapon to “stop” and “intercept” an opponent’s complex attack at a moment’s notice. When you are standing right foot forward, your right punch and right leg become the main offensive weapons because of their advanced position. When fighting, keep your strongest side up front.
Other than the Finger Fan or Eye Jab which uses the same basic technique with more range and against a weak target and requires good accuracy. The JKD Straight Lead is an excellent aggressive first attack to initiate using all 5 ways of attack outlined by Bruce Lee. Simple Attack/Simple Angled Attack, Attack By Combination, Hand Immobilizing Attack, Progressive Indirect Attack or Attack By Draw. The straight lead can be used as part of all of these ways of attack and an essential basic move for footwork, biomechanics, range and efficient speed. Learn it well!
One of Dan Lok’s passions in life is martial arts. Like many young kids, after watching a Bruce Lee movie, it changed his life forever. At 17 years old, Dan started training in martial arts seriously because he was being bullied in school. It wasn’t long for Dan to learn the techniques he needed, and gain the confidence necessary to defend himself.
Dan has studied with legendary martial artist such as Bruce Lee’s original student Ted Wong (tedwongjkd.net) and Joe Lewis “The Worlds Greatest Fighter” (joelewisassocia...), making him a second generation student of Bruce Lee - in Bruce Lee's authentic art of Jeet Kune Do (JKD). He's also a third generation student of Ip Man (Wing Chun Kung Fu).
Dan has also trained with other great instructors like Sifu Adam Chan (www.pragmaticm...), Canadian lightweight boxing champion Tony "Fire Kid" Pep ( / pepboxing , and Octavio Quintero (www.theartofjk...)
For Dan, martial arts training permeates every area of life. It’s not a hobby, it’s a way of life, and it influences how he does business.
Martial arts gave him the confidence, focus, and patience to push through these obstacles and to keep fighting when he felt like giving up.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Dan is NOT a full-time martial artist and he doesn't even claim to be that good of a fighter.
He's simply a successful businessman who enjoys the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee, just like you.
He doesn't have any online martial art videos, seminars or expensive "private training" to sell you. Quite frankly, he doesn't need the money.
He simply wants to share his passion for the art of JKD (his own version of Jeet Kune Do) through his RU-vid channel.

Thank you for posting this tutorial! I remember reading in Teri Tom's book The Straight Lead (student of Ted Wong), they described at length the importance of the Phasic Bent Knee during the SLead. Also many other body mechanics too, as you are fully aware. When I first read her book, I was surprised to learn that Ted Wong stated that Bruce Lee borrowed from Jack Dempsey's vertical fist (boxing) mechanics. I loved how Ted Wong / Teri Tom wrote that the fist in the SL lands its target before the front heel lands!

I use this in my self defense studies and I tried it in boxing sparring and the guy had to stop because it was so unorthadox and directly powerful, it is like a jab but a cross in one shot. I found that whatever punch they throw you can hit them faster because of how direct it is thank you

I practice Shotokan 4-5 times a week. I've been "stuck" trying to get my timing right. I've been coached by many but to no avail. I walked out of class yesterday morning still not quite understanding and a little frustrated. Right after class, I discovered your video. "The Proper Way" (@ 3:26) gave me the breakthrough instruction I've been seeking. Timing is everything! Xie xie!

Well done! I learned independent motion technique a long time ago, and it's second nature to me now. When I teach students to do it I'm always surprised how hard it is to learn, but I have learned to tell them that it takes a long time to master it. Combine it with an independent motion lunge punch with the left hand :-)

Dan, what you're teaching in this lesson, I've been saying for years. In the late 80's, I was riding the public Bus. I was attacked from behind (I was hit in the back of my head). I knew I had one chance to hit this guy. I got up and just as he stood up ,I snapped a vertical fist. It looked like I was going to tear his head from his body ( his hair stood up on end). His front teeth caved in. I can see he was trying to bring his teeth down with his tongue. The front lead is a devastating punch. Keep up the good work Dan, your lessons are outstanding. ✊👍✌

Watching these videos made me realize that I’ve been calling my training from years ago at trident academy of material arts the wrong thing, I always thought it was taekwondo, I always wondered why I’m most comfortable south paw hands like water and relaxed with a diagonal stance, never understood why my straight jab has knock out power, people say I’m crazy when I tel them I feel the strength coming out of my forearm to my fist with just a twitch of my hips Edit: I was taught speed stamina and technique is key

i learned & mastered (at least i'd like to think i did) this punch from reading the book, "bruce lee's fighting method". one thing u didn't mention is that the hand is relaxed until it snaps at the end like a whip. it's a powerful punch! bruce borrowed from fencing, etc to develop this punch.

'HAND TRIGGERS FOOT TO SPARK'..........The hand goes FIRST then the REAR FOOT SHUNTS THE BODY FORWARD a nanosecond afterwards.......Some people get it wrong by instinctively putting the foot first. But the hand going first IGNITES the foot. And the REARFOOT isn't on the toes. It 's off the foot arch. Very, very hard to get right.

4:17 I'm sorry, correct me if I'm wrong. I played this in slow motion, frame by frame. The rule for the Lead Jab, is "hand before foot". But in the slowmo, your foot moved first and landed first before the fist strike the target. It didn't make any difference to the boxing jab.

Can this be a punch used to knock people out in boxing, why or why not? I know traditionally in boxing crosses, hooks, and uppercuts are used for KO's. Also, I do question why boxing teaches to turn the fists. From what I read bareknuckle had vertical fists originally.
@taylorbee4010
@taylorbee4010 6 лет назад
About my last comment My Sifu doesn't teach a lot of punching to beginners outside of basic Kung Fu strikes Reason being he wants us to be strong first and not try to hit his 30 year old bag which is as hard as rocks at the bottom. But really I never see him whip this out or teach it, even though it is common in a lot of what I see online. I think he CAN (he uses the jkd "rock on sign" hands with the finger and pinky out for measurement while he's in stance), but the style is a little different. Defense and footwork are emphasized first, and form. But every tutorial (this is one of the few good ones on it imo) see it as almost basic training, even though it is very difficult even as described by Bruce himself. Why is this? I would think my Sifu doesn't want a beginner to try this and smash his wrist or get beat up for trying it without a solid foundation. I was not trying to be sarcastic. There seems to be dispute about this move.

Crazy my boxing coach always gets mad at me cause ive always jabbed from my hand lowered cause I always felt it was quicker and more powerful. He always sais "you're not gunna land that against elite fighters" then I spar pros and they get caught too and tell me its cause fighters don't usually throw a jab like that.

Hello Dan , but you left out the gravitational element of the straight lead , and the knuckles used , and the contraction \ relaxation of the hand , but everything else was correct , and my final comment is that only Bruce could really fight this way , he trained it for his own use , anyone else would be better served to learn any other fighting method , not jkd , only Bruce
