Hi Craig. My reaction to what I have seen is that as the valves are so clean that some one has obviously been in there to do some work. Perhaps something happened like the end of a spark plug broke off or it dropped a valve, I'm thinking that because of the marks on the top of the piston. The other thing I would definitely do would be take the barrel of and inspect the piston rings for wear or breakages, if there reusable then hone the bore to get rid of those nasty marks so the rings, if in good condition , can be run in nicely. would be silly not to at this stage. Just my thoughts. All the best Mike. 👍

My old garden find (no barnes found here)XT350 was so siezed that the kickstart shaft snapped when somebody tried to kick it, it had been sitting with no carbs fitted for years but after a few days with WD40 & plenty of tea , i put a spanner on the crank and it moved, and got the bike running after i got hold of a kickstart shaft, the engine will get stripped down eventuly. Kèep up the good work !!

If it were mine having got this far with stripping it down I would at the very least have the barrel off to check the rings. It won't be the piston catching in the bore, it will be the rings and at this point it's only a couple of minutes to do. It would be a shame to put it back together, put it in the bike and then find there's poor compression because of a broken ring which might cause further damage to the bore.

I think that bore looks as if it hasn't seen much running. I would take it to an engine builder and have them give the bore a light hone. I would then buy a new set of rings and put it back together. Perhaps pop the valves and check how good they are whilst the head is off.

Craig, you really need to get that extension built on your shop. I know I will keep watching even if it is building a shed rather than a bike. My shop is a shed so I would be quite interested to see your ideas.

Consensus here has taken the words out of my mouth. I had a 500 (B33) for many years. Pushrod tower is 2 nuts and it's off, barrel slides off and you can check big end (Last forever) and yes, get the bore glaze busted and some new rings. Looks like someone has allowed or didn't notice the magdyno strap came loose as the slots the dowels fit in have been worn round. Those engines will run on TVO (tractor vapourising Oil). I can't remember the ratio now but I think it was petrol and 20% parafin

I'd definitely just give it a light hone and put it back together Plus if you lift the barrel you can check the big end Also sometimes you get corrosion on the valve seats so I'd at least fill the combustion chamber with petrol to make sure they are still good Cheers

My father inlaw was crazy about Bsa bikes, he would say Triumph's were to "saft" soft for pulling sidecars and they didn't have the metal in them lol but if he was storing engines any length of time he would cover everything in greese and loosly put it together again, this reminded me of him.

@valvegeek
@valvegeek 2 года назад
Fascinating, thanks for that. Reminds me I was advised if leaving an engine for a while, turn it over until at the end of the compression stroke (relatively easy to do by feel with a kick starter), where the piston will be at the top and both valves are shut. Nowt can get in from outside (via the valves) and the bore is mostly only open to the crank case. Altho it only works for singles, or parallel or flat twins where both pistons are at the same position. For the 'other side', that's not on compression, the valves would be exhaust nearly closed and inlet just opening, so almost the same and still better than a wide open valve. 😁

Hi Craig, I concur with the other commenters here but would add that the build up (grease) you've encountered may be an early form of assembly lube! I saw this recently on a car engine on another youtube channel, Barum Engines. The fluid evaporates over time and leaves a sticky residue. Hope this may shed some light. Cheers for the channel, keep up the good work.

I don't normally comment as you are normally working on a level that is beyond my abilities. This time it is not the case I must have pulled a hundred of those engines apart as a penniless teenager. You could buy one for a fiver. You are only 5 minutes away from removing the bore & piston. Then a clean-up of the ring grooves etc. and I'll bet the rings are in spec. check the bottom end and it'll probably run for years. It's the right thing to do & costs bugger all. All the best.

A small piece of carbon could have stopped the piston in the bore and the oil might have softened it enough to get by.

Maybe try with some acetone if you get that ridge away. From over here, it looks like contact corrosion and pitting. Time for a full overhaul. That engine is too precious to wreck it with half done jobs.

Its great to see "you especially" fired up like that couldn't happen to a better guy, seeing the end of projects and start of new ones especially diversifying from the Enfield's is probably helping, myself looking forward to the Ural. It was good there was little issues with the engine but you should know most old British bike owners especially in the day will use them till they near stop, some of us intervene before it stops. Im also fired up at the moment just finishing a shed 26'x12' with a 9' door on the side allowing great in and out access, built by myself over the last year to house my best bikes meaning 'as in your case' I won't have to wheel 4 bikes out to get to the one on the lift, after a days work this can be a chore especially as I have to manoeuvre them around a Frogeye Sprite I just put a 1275 engine and gearbox into but still on axle stands and in the way. The last vid on the seat you made was excellent and made to look easy. Im looking forward to Dan collecting his bike maybe this weekend?

@David_Walker16-3-51
@David_Walker16-3-51 2 года назад
Looks like a BFG plate, British Forces Germany. Issued to service personnel serving in Germany up until the early 1970’s. The distinctive plates marked them out as potential IRA targets so after that, right hand drive vehicles got a standard UK plate and left hookers got a German plate. I made the mistake of buying a nice 1956 oval window VW still on BFG plates, sadly I didn’t get the necessary documentation to re register it in the UK. Eventually, I let it go, at a loss to a bloke who had no scruples and promptly “rung” the car with a UK registered scrapper.

How much will it really cost to go through that motor and fix it? Hone the cylinder, new rings, new gaskets, and maybe a bearing or two? Worst case the cylinder needs to be replaced. I'd hate to see it go from bad to completely wrecked for the fairly small amount of money needed to fix it.

Judging by the ease with which it came apart, I think somebody, probably years ago, knowing it was going to be unused for ages, stripped it, cleaned it up, greased it (to prevent corrosion) and re-assembled it, fairly loosely. Their thinking.......possibly........re-assemble to keep all the bits together......greased to prevent corrosion in storage.....if required at a later date, strip, clean out, re-assemble correctly to re-commission. Just my guess, but it makes some sense methinks. Could do with a "glaze bust" in the bore at the very least.
@nightster6378

@Eddie Hitler Firstly I apologise too Craig for my view on his channel. Of course I know I can ignore it Eddie but people make the same comments time and time again and fall about with laughter each time they hear it, it appears is a tad childish so I'm not sure why should I ignore them. A joke can be hilariously funny the first time, after repeated by the originator 40 maybe 50 times or more they deserves little more than a grimace at best. When repeated by others after years thinking it's still hilarious just to gain a little heart to their comment, to raise a smirk is more than enough and thats only due to the idiocy of who makes the comment especially by the over 12-year-olds who think they're grown up's. Maybe idiocy is harsh and infantile is a better description. I also enjoy the comments I make usually to expose a narcissist, similar to the narcissist who enjoys entertaining his audience trying to destroy other channels and insult their viewers, and not only one channel having set himself up as the RU-vid Police out to protect everyone from harm. OUR HERO. I also enjoy the hypocrisy and lies from the same narcissist who claims he does not remove comments and blocking comments from being made on his channel then when called to question can't handle the truth. Just like when asked when he is going to build something better than the ordinary Allen Millyard a challenge he accepted and Delboy challenge he made and is yet to do. Putting his name in front of a designers name an engineer who designed an engine 40 years ago and puts claim to it after making a few plastic parts on a cheap 3D printer and loads of promises. To get told to kcuf off when called out for taking the piss out of people with Parkinson's disease, down syndrome, or those of a lesser education. I guess I can see why he hates me LOL. I consider getting blocked from making comments and having my comments removed an achievement and a victory especially after my invitation to meet with him in person was ignored therefore not accepted.
