jin’s video log is really important to me because i didn’t quite understand at first, why he seemed so sad and worried about getting a cold. i only recently realized that because he’s the oldest and it was early in their career, he didn’t have anyone to look after them. as the oldest hyung, it’s his job to take care of all of the members, and it would be untraditional if he were to show any weakness or get ill

It's weird to thank you for this, but it's really so rare to find people, who are reacting to them, who appreciates their art, trully. You guys are amazing, I love listening to your discussions. Also I totally agree, Bang PD is honestly such a beautiful person, I'm glad he gave them freedom to creativity, otherwise I don't know how I would've found worth in myself by my own. Can't wait for following chapter!

We are incredibly lucky as a fandom that BTS vlogged their journey from day one and shared all the footage with us. I think that even though BTS had fewer rules at their agency, they were all ambitious and self driven to the point that they enforced rules on themselves. I believe the weight pressures were also self imposed. They know the idol industry very well and know the Korean beauty standards expected to be competitive in the industry. Our western celebrities also strive for whatever the "Hollywood" beauty standard is. It was ingrained in them from early on the value of the team....when one shines they all shine. Yoongi's stage name (Suga) was chosen by him because it was the starting two syllables of his favourite basketball position...Shooting Guard. When RM & Suga joined BitHit (the 1st two members), it was meant to be a HipHop/Rap group without choreography. Hitman Bang changed the direction of the group and as you can see RM and Suga had to make a difficult decision about staying or moving on given those changes. They faced so much negative backlash from their rap communities as a result of staying. Thanks again for your thoughtful perspectives. I promise you that every chapter gets better and better.

The part where Choi Siwon is prophesying the rise of an Asian icon always grabs my attention. Even he, while rightly predicting the future, must have not considered it being BTS in his wildest dreams. He most probably was thinking about one of his juniors, who without a doubt are also very talented idols. No one saw BTS coming, not even BTS themselves. BTS often joke how they used to laugh when BangPD told them they will be world stars. I don't know if BangPD really knew it in his bones or was just motivating his young mentees. It's weird how the title of this docu-series always gives me goosebumps "The Rise of Bangtan". Aneesa did a phenomenal job in weaving an engaging and informative work through her edit. As much as BTS makes you an ARMY, ARMYs also contribute a lot to make people ARMYs 💜💜

I am an elementary school teacher. In today's society, our young people go through many obstacles. Sadly, many go through trauma nobody could fathom. I have taught 19 years. I became an ARMY in my 40s, when a student introduced me to them. Through the years, many motivational speakers have come to our school. They all made a difference. However, I use BTS, as RM has instructed to use them, to show students they can do anything and everything through hard work. All 7 of these members have 7 individual stories. They were not born rich; they weren't given this. They. Worked. These boys teach my students more about dreams than I ever could. Thank you for your reactions. I love them and both of you.

When it comes to weight, there's no requirement for BTS really. It's the members' themselves who get really strict on themselves because of society's perception and expectations on how a KPOP idol should look like. But as time goes on, the boys eventually get more comfortable and we saw them accept themselves and try to love themselves the way they are. They love to eat! They often advises army to eat a lot and stop losing so much weight 💜

let me add to this, whenever BTS were asked about their trainee days and something to do with diet or food, they always say because of limited resources and their company is small in early days choices for food are limited. I am sure even BH let them eat anything they want they were also taught to have discipline in their diet bcoz of the stamina and energy they need to put up to do a lot of work.

Bang PD is truly a genius, but he is also incredibly kind as a CEO. Not only to BTS but also to other artists under his label. Korea still has a very strict view on the LGBTQ+ community, and even 10 years ago he let his artists express themselves freely like Jo Kwon who talks about how it was Bang PD who let him be himself and even bought him high heels to show he truly accepted him. Big Hit as a single company under the Hybe label still only has 3 artists signed. Lee Hyun, BTS and TxT. Lee Hyun is like BTS' older brother, and the love they have for him is super sweet when you see content they release with him. But in the same turn BTS are also super respectful and helpful towards the newest grp TXT. Its like a family (they even have a family portrait video on bangtan tv where all of them get together). Bang PD grew a truly stable company. A lot of the people who were with BTS from day 1, still work within Hybe or still work directly with BTS in the same roles. There is also a great video from The Island where Bang PD is speaking to the newest group to come under Hybe (enhyphen) about the importance and respect they should have for there fans.

There are members who tried to leave the group because of how difficult things were. RM went back home and tried to quit the team but his dad told him that if he quit now he might end up regretting it for the rest of his life and so he came back. J Hope tried to leave too and he said Jungkook clung to him and cried and wouldn't let go and so he decided to stay back. So even though their company treated them much better than other kpop companies, they had such a hard time simply due to the level of excellence and quality they were attempting to establish. The first thing they were publicly known for, was their sharp and impressively coordinated dance moves. They used to practice even 13-16 hours a day for weeks on end. Plus the financial standing of the company was also a scary aspect. Imagine putting in so much effort and the company not being able to get you a slot to perform. That's why they say, "Did you see my bag?" in Mic Drop. (bag=back) In korean when someone says they have "Backing" it means someone's pushing for you, that maybe rich parents pushing opportunities for their kids or influential companies putting out articles and media support and getting easy broadcast slots. But BTS didn't have any of that. They had to make up for all that with sheer skill and excellence.

Seo taiji actually invited BTS to his concert in 2017 and they even performed together on stage on a metal song, coolest thing ever. Seo taiji said that he is passing his torch to BTS. Out of all of the kpop idols that came before him, he only acknowledged BTS as his real successors, decades later.

There is also that idea that Bang Si-hyuk (BTS' father) created BTS around RM, since he hired RM on the spot the first time he heard him rap in an informal audition. That was when he started hunting for people who could work with RM to complete the line up. That said, it seemed that the audition was not only based on skill but based on affinity with the very first member and the core of BTS... RM.

I've only watched clips, but that show is fantastic - it's relevant and fresh today as it must have been back then! And I believe that Seo Taiji himself has said that BTS are the ones today continuing his legacy. High praise. Btw - gentle note - I really hope that Jared and Jordan learn how to pronounce his name right. It's a common mistake in the west to pronounce the transliteration "eo" as "eh-oh", while in fact it's just "oh". It's the fault of the transliteration convention (damn thing), which attempts to differentiate a short O (hard to find an example in an American accent, but an English ... shot, spot or hot) from a long O (Owe, Show, know - but without a diphthong). When a Korean says eo in a word, it often sounds very like a soft ah to an ear used to English. Sorry to Bang(tan) on 😂, but it hurts my ears a little every time! 👍💜

I think something to add to the collectivist vs. individualism point is that they combined the two world views successfully, which I think is a very hard thing to do. As you will see through their career, and even more so now, there is great pride and love in the boys for being a part of the whole that is BTS but also they have always supported each other in their individual projects. This was something I noticed and loved about them early on and that is that members doing their own thing sometimes was and is not seen as a betrayal of the group or like anyone elevating themselves above their brothers but as something to be celebrated with the whole. I feel that in most western groups when a member “goes solo” it’s the end of the group but that has never been the case for BTS but instead is an extension of BTS through each member’s individuality.

This is a great series! Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) shared that she has been working on this series (her labor of love) for over 3 years! She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work! I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and BTS fan since pre-debut! She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. *(Cr: "FY" on yt)* I think it's important to notice the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, etc. While the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. BTS stayed until late hours because they WANTED to, while the other trainees HAD to. Obviously BTS had things they had to do too, they could've not made it to debut as Jimin almost did due to short training, but instead of using that as a fear to hold over them Bighit seemed to use it to encourage them to work harder and improve themselves. BTS were allowed to make mistakes without worrying they'd be thrown out of the company. I'm very glad that they all signed with Bighit, and that Bighit has caused a shift in the Kpop industry, lots of newer companies are giving their groups more freedom and treating them better due to BTS' success. These companies see that idols don't need to be punished and forced to do things in order to succeed, BTS are proof that freedom and happiness should be the most important thing. *(Cr: "Shannon" on yt)* Now plz understand this 1st episode shows two sides, one is typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, whereas subtle hints of BTS and bighit being contradictory different is shown, BTS is different from other K-pop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don't do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start. *(Cr: "Kayla Kulik" on yt)*

So glad you're finally starting this series!! Just wanted to point out that even though I absolutely love how informative and well put together the series is, in episode 1 when the editor mentions the problems surrounding the kpop industry, the editor fails to mention that one of the reasons bts were gaining alot of popularity even frm the beginning was due to the fact that their company didnot enforce any of those rules on them. All they were asked to do by their ceo was to be genuine and honest towards their art. They had no dating bans, didn't have their phones taken away, no harsh diets were enforced either. Everytime a member worked overtime or did extreme diets, they did it out of their own will. I notice alot of newer armys think bts had to abide by all these rules too so I hope it helped. Looking forward to more💜❤️

Their teamwork and the team has become so good, obviously, not only because of the culture, upbringing, but also themselves. Other interns and BangTan themselves once said that Namjoon, as a leader, from the very beginning, always tried to make sure that instead of simple rivalry, they all helped each other (which is also obvious, because if you want to be a team and good team - you have to do it). Also some information related to their nutrition&diets/body image: Seokjin. From the very beginning, he also held the position of "visual" of the group (which doesn't mean just looking attractive and representing the group). In the early videos, Jin doesn't talk about his life with happiness. His attention is almost entirely focused on his body and his struggle with learning to dance. And, for example, then, at some point, Jin decided that his difficulties with dancing were due to a lack of muscle mass, so he started going to the gym every day to develop his muscles. He said he goes to the gym while everyone else is asleep, which makes you wonder when he slept. Also, in those early videos, Jin talked about food, but not as something he likes to cook. In fact, Jin was saying that he had to start cooking for himself because he didn't have anyone to do it for him. He talked about trying to find ways to cook better food for his body. The cooking was done out of necessity, not for pleasure. Maybe he got some pleasure from it after all, seeing how much the band members appreciated his cooking, but he didn't do it for fun in the early days of working with BTS. As it was said in the video by other people: if your body does not meet the standards of the company and your team, if you does not look handsome enough, then your career may be in jeopardy. Jin was also once called a "pig" by one of the managers, whom Jin eventually publicly confronted during the "Open Your Heart" segment of the episode "Rookie King". In one of the early video blogs, Jin talked about this topic too, also saying that he disagreed with President Ban, who also apparently also talked about Jin "getting fat." Jin also shared his anxiety that he was "feeling weaker and weaker." He was worried that his weak body would negatively affect his singing and dancing, which would negatively affect other members. Obviously, Jin was focused on being a strong member of the team, which means becoming a better dancer and singer, as well as maintaining his role as a visual. Once, when In appeared on "Baek JongWon's Top 3 Chef King" - he said that he "didn't eat anything but 2 packs of chicken breasts every day for a year." Also, at the same time, J-Hope said that Gene did it because "he is a Visual for the band, and maintaining his weight is something he needs to be aware of every day." Jimin. One day, during their presence on the "New Yang Nam Show", a photo of Jimin with a large group of other students was shown, followed by a video in which Jimin danced contemporary, group exercises, while studying at "Busan High School of Arts" (BHSA). Jimin said that the photo was taken in his first year of high school. As the members slowly figured out which of the many students depicted was Jimin, Namjoon called Jimin "fat" in the picture. His former modern dance teacher Kim Do-Kyun then gave an interview for this episode. She told us a little about Jimin as a student. It seems that he was full of questions then, especially those concerning the improvement of his body. Then, one day, he asked her how to make his muscles look better. Then she gave him unknown advice, and she said that the next day he returned with the words: "Teacher, I did the exercise! And my muscles look very nice after that." - and that then he took off his clothes to show his muscles. [* before entering "BHSA", Jimin said that before that he had only danced "popping". a person can wear any clothing that is comfortable when performing this form of dance. however, Jimin had to wear a tight-fitting balletoutfit for his ballet classes, and in all his dance classes he had to stand in front of a mirror with his classmates. you can hear countless comments from dancers about how their bodies compare to other dancers when they look into these mirrors. teachers can be very critical of a dancer's body, and maintaining a certain weight is required in many dance studios and schools] In a video blog dated February 12, 2013, Jimin expresses concern about weight gain. Two days later, on "Valentine's Day", he was recording a log with Jungkook. They started comparing how many candies they got, and Jimin consoled himself after learning that Jungkook got 2 to his 1, saying, "I'm happy because we're on a diet". Jimin explained, "Since the "New Year," I think I've gained a lot of weight like a pig". Jimin continued to criticize himself, "because I'm a pig, because I'm a pig... because I'm fat and my face isn't pretty... with the hope that I will be beautiful if I lose weight, I go on a diet". [at the very end of the video, 15-year-old Jungkook, who was listening to all this, said: "I'm a pig too." and it was then, perhaps because Jimin was aware of the influence he could have on Jungkook in this matter, that Jimin's face became sad] Much is said about the eating habits of BTS members in a December 2014 interview with "10Asia Magazine Star": Q: Anyway, sitting in front of Jimin, it seems that he and the other members are pretty skinny. Jimin: I need to show everyone manly male composure. Namjoon: Jimin is very scrupulous in his self-control. Jin: He only eats once a day! Jimin: I've been like this before, but now I've changed it a bit, so it's not that extreme. When others see that I only eat once a day, they worry that I will faint and tell me that as long as I regulate what I put in my mouth, I don't need to worry so much. Q: Do you eat only once a day? Jimin: I'll have breakfast and lunch. Taehyung: Before the debut, all members had a fixed menu. For example, we could get all the oil from tuna and make a sandwich with it. Namjoon: It was disgusting… Taehyung: So Rapmon-hyun and I are always trying to figure out how we can eat something else. Namjoon: We're always figuring out how we can sneak into a convenience store (laughs). But Jimin has never broken the rules, because he hates looking very fat on TV. Everyone sets priorities in their own way. Although Taehyung and I will control our drinks, the other members of the group may not. We think we may have to control our food, but we still have to fight and move on, so we can eat as well! In fact, just practicing our dancing is a great exercise, so even a little food won't make us fat. Q: It seems that Jimin is quite strict with himself. Namjoon: Yes, he is very strict with himself. [speaking of Namjoon's words - there are enough stories about how some of the members could leave the rehearsal to actually eat ramen (noodles) in the toilet or when they were eating ice cream, and when someone came in, they hid it in their pocket because they thought it was there was their manager] + In an interview with NOW3, April 7, 2016, Jimin was asked what other people say to him the most these days. He replied: "Don't lose weight." Jimin also said that his parents are concerned about his weight loss. Like all members, Jimin has come a long way to himself, a lot of work to love himself. In addition to being excessively strict with himself in relation to his singing and dancing, he was also fixated on his body: muscles, the size of his hands, his height. Since he was young and was in the environment he was in, his idea of "masculinity" was strongly related to appearance &sexuality. But over time, he learned to accept and love himself much more, changed his way of thinking about the idea of masculinity. [speaking about this and about the other members, especially the older ones - at one of the concerts Namjoon talked about it - that the ARMYs were the ones who helped him to love and his appearance] The last thing I want to say is: - as a person who, because of his studies (and now work), very often had and has problems in eating well and properly - to be honest, when I now think about the times of study, and especially about the time when, for certain reasons, for a month, if not more, I only ate in the morning and late in the evening, which means that between meals could take from 8 to 10 hours.. I wonder how I was able to survive all this, and I am even more amazed how they were able to survive. even removing all the stress and countless other problems - just from the way they ate and the fact that they could not sleep for weeks - this is already part of what you can call "real hell". they are heroes. - what I also really appreciate about them and their relationship is that when they were young, they could also joke and tease each other a lot without thinking about how much pain they could cause each other. (for example, Jungkook often joked and teased Jimin for his height, and Taehyung, because of his character and behavior, was called "strange/alien") but despite this, they also always sincerely worried about each other, helped each other, took care of each other, respected each other, admired each other, loved each other - they remained a real family&team.

While I agree that this documentary is one of the best (if not THE best) out there, I'd like to reiterate that this is still fan-made. BTS have their own official docuseries, as well as official movies that accompany those docu-series. It's good to have those as a guide/starting point since it's done by the members and label themselves. They're very insightful, honest, and informative about the members' views, personalities, artistry, etc. You could do them on your own time if you're interested. I would love to give you a guide to starting if you ever need one, but you seem to do very thorough research yourself! hope you enjoy, borahaee

i agree but those dont give the insight that this one gives us on their pre debut and debut, even when it comes to their hardship that they were victim of, they dont like to talk about it in their official docu series. so this one is in a category of his own. but i agree . they have to watch the other docus in the future.

@@bonobonoyaaa.....7729 I don’t think you seem to understand the intention behind it. Aneesa the creator of this series, wanted to show how different BTS is when compared to “other groups” She included bits and pieces of others to really highlight what makes BTS different and what makes Bighit as a company different from any other k-pop group out there. To draw that comparison you need to show other groups too. I have seen every single official movie, docu-series put out by bighit but NONE of them show their journey or story from day one. They only cover their experiences from their world tour and behind the scenes of it. We will be getting an official documentary series that would cover their entire story soon which is “Beyond the Stars” that is soon to air on Disney plus but until then this is the ONLY docu-series that comprehensively narrates their story from Day 1.

I honestly believe the “something different” that those of us who truly respect the grind, work ethic and tenacity that BTS exhibits is because they are the epitome of perfect synergy. From the time they spent together all those years working on how to be a singular unit while maintaining their individuality is unmatched and imho will be difficult or close to impossible to ever duplicate again. I credit Bang PD with allowing them or really investing in them as the “head visionary” to come into their own as artists and mature into just good, caring, loving human beings.

The crazy thing is the songs I tend to love were not even the main tracks. Their album content is so deep and tends to shine brighter then the comeback songs. The rap you asked about at one part was the intro for 2kool4skool ep. Jordan can’t wait until you see the cypher’s and outro tear (watch the Wembley stadium live stage it will blow you away) by the rap line. Jared looking forward to you seeing the vocal line in particular House of cards live and Jimin’s solo’s. You have about a years worth of content in front of you. Enjoy the journey.

This wasn’t mentioned in the documentary but here’s some info on Hit Man Bang that will help you understand why he runs things differently. 1. He used to work for JYP one of the Big 3 (there’s 3 main music companies in kpop, JYP, SM and YG). He got his name Hit Man Bang because he constantly wrote hit songs. 2. He left JYP because he hated how the trainee system was run and decided to start his own company. That’s why he treated his trainees different than others. 3. He actually had one group before BTS, Glam. But that group didn’t succeed. 4. When Hit Man Bang saw RM rapping that’s when he decided to try again, creating BTS for RM.

It's actually true about all those harsh moves pulls on the k-pop idols. But--- in BTS situation, it was them who pull harsh and pressure on themselves. They worked hard to gain the respect they wanted in this industry. The respect to be name as someone who can be your Anpanman in difficult time. They pressure themselves to the core that their body couldn't take more. They had major injuries to major health conditions but that doesn't stopped them to look brave in front of this society to show that---- that THEY ACHIEVED. They always thought of things that can make someone's life a bit happy. They were happy to see other happy because of them--- and that's what they did for what they wanted. BTS ARE LEGENDS!

They've been through so much and a lot of it really early on for so many reasons. I'm glad that even the first episode was this informative for you!! Suga did play basketball in fact on of the meanings behind his stage name is that one of the position he played (I think it was his favorite) was shooting guard. The process to debut is really intense, there's actually a documentary on one of the other trainees that nearly debuted with BTS called "I Was Almost In BTS" that was released on RU-vid. He talks about his experience with the other BTS members, their day to day life, and reminiscing on memories with them. We look at them as people we admire and look up to as a fan, the former trainees look at them and they see their friends that they lived with, practiced with, went to school with, etc and just want to be able to have their friends back. It's such an emotional rollercoaster just to watch and learn what they go through to achieve this dream and what they do with it once they debut, I can't imagine what it was like to actually be the one going through it.

The difference in individualism vs collectivism in the western vs Eastern culture can be seen even in how the game of "musical chairs" is played in japan compared to the west. we each fight to have a chair each time the music stops until you are the last man standing, while with the Japanese each time the music stops they have to find a way to make sure that Everyone fits on the remaining chair down to the last chair. so they have to find a way for 10, or 8 persons to fit on 1 chair leaving none out or all are out

Korean age - international age is slightly more complicated than just adding two. For Korean age, you're 1 when you're born and ageing happens on New Year, not on your birthday. So for example, V who was born on 30 december was one year old when he was born and two days later on january first, he was two years old.

Honestly the company didn't imply restrictions interms on weight it was the members themselves and unfortunately in korea visuals and looks matter alot so they themselves used to put pressure so they diet themselves
