BTS - The Truth Untold (Reaction) 

“The Truth Untold” is based on the story of the Smeraldo flower. -In a village of northern Italy called ‘La Città di smeraldo’, there was a small secluded castle. In that castle lived a man with grotesque appearance. He was the love child of a duke from a powerful family in Florence. The duke fell in love with the daughter of his gardener and gave birth to this man. The mother of the man passed away from excessive bleeding after giving birth to him. The wife and children of the duke wanted to kill the man, so the duke sent the man away to let him escape. The man hid himself in the old castle, lonely. probably, it was because of the hatred he received from birth and while he's growing up that he didn’t open his heart to anyone, he got angry and hid if someone tried to approach him. His only joy was growing flowers in his garden. But one day, a girl appeared near the man’s castle. The girl in ragged clothes lifted her heels, jumped over the garden fence and stole the flowers. The man got angry at first, he spent the whole night to guard the garden. But in his brief moment of sleepiness, the girl picked flowers again and ran away. It happened for several days, until one night the man pretended to fall asleep and watched the girl go. He was curious. Without realizing it, the man waited for the girl, and one day he followed her. He covered himself with a cloak and after following here the man discovered, the poor and weak girl was selling flowers for a living. The man wanted to help the girl. He wanted to teach her every method of growing flowers he knew, he wanted to teach her how to grow beautiful flowers. But he couldn’t come forward to the girl. She would be scared of him, she wouldn’t love his grotesque appearance. In the end, the only thing he could do was to grow and take care of the flowers so she could keep coming to his garden. The man decided to make a special flower that doesn't exist in the world. He started to make a flower so that the girl could sell at an expensive price. The man shut himself in the castle to make the flower. After countless attempts, the man made a flower that never existed in the world, and filled his garden with that flower. But the girl was nowhere to be seen. No matter how much he waited, the girl wouldn’t come to his garden. The man grew concerned and went to the village with his face covered. But he discovered that the girl had already died.

I had the great opportunity to see them live in MetLife Stadium in 2019 and the vibe that was felt in the stadium when they sang this song was so impressive that I cannot describe it in words. I had goosebumps and the silence of almost 70,000 people just listening to this song, when in the rest of the concert what we did was just shout and sing, that special moment was magical, really it was impressive. One of the best concerts of my life.

So, I absolutely think the deeper theme of this song is exactly what you were talking about ..... the concept of perceiving yourself to be ugly/inadequate and chaining yourself in loneliness because of it. It fits with the album series it was produced in, the Love Yourself series. I actually think your analysis was very insightful and hit the nail on the head. The 'story' the song uses to deliver this message, though, is based off the Italian legend of the smeraldo flower. In brief, the story is about a man who lives alone within a secluded castle and wore a mask because he was 'ugly'. The only thing that brought him any joy was the garden within his castle, in which he cultivated many lovely flowers. One day a beautiful girl snuck into his castle garden (reminds me a bit of the Beauty and the Beast story, actually) to steal his flowers. Eventually he secretly followed her to find out why she was stealing his flowers and discovered she was selling them because she was very poor and it was how she was keeping herself fed. He wanted to help her and slowly fell in love with her, but he could never bring himself to have the courage to actually reveal himself to her, so what he did was work on cultivating the most unique, rare, and beautiful flowers he could so that it would help her when she stole and sold them. Ultimatley he decided to grow the 'smeraldo' flower, a beautiful flower that had never before existed in the world. But when he eventually succeeded, the girl never came to the garden to steal it. Eventually he went secretly to the village to find out where she was and discovered that she had died .... he had lost forever his chance to tell her the truth of who he was or that he loved her. So the 'smeraldo flower' is said to symbolize 'sincerity that could not be delivered' or, per the title of BTS's song, inspired by the story, "The Truth Untold".

This song is so touching, making me want to cry

this song had to grow on me at first but it has become one of my favorites, i love it so so so much. A detail that'll help u understand the song A LOT more,, the song is actually based on an old "fairytale(??)",, fictional story, sad ending. The story is called "la citta di smeraldo " and goes as so,, There was this guy who was ugly (he received a lot of hate and cruelty for his looks), he lived isolated in an old run down castle and had a garden of flowers, the only thing which brought him happiness. One day he saw a girl enter his garden and he watched as she stole some of his flowers, he was bothered by it at first but eventually started becoming curious about her and even began waiting for her to come. One day he ends up quietly following her after she stole his flowers to see why she is doing so and learns she is poor and stealing the flowers because she sells them to make a living. He wanted to help her but he was afraid of scaring the girl away and so he comes up with the idea that the only way he could help was by creating a flower so beautiful that doesn't exist yet (Smeraldo flower), so that she can sell it for a lot of money. He works on it silently for a long time and after much trial and error he finally created it and places them in his garden so she could come "steal" them. But she suddenly never came back, he soon learns that she had passed away already for he had locked himself away for so long creating the flower. that's the story, you can even search it up if u want ! but this is the story this song based off of and i hope more of the lyrics make sense now,, your interpretation was pretty good but maybe knowing the story could add onto your interpretation and give u a better understanding of the song,, also thank u for reacting to The Truth Untold, it's such a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics,, and the live performance is just beautiful 😭😭💖

It's a sad song but a beautiful one. It's all about regrets, and I think we all know how painful it is to have regrets in life. It honestly gave me the chills the first time I watched the live performance.

If I had to choose, I think I would want to see Magic Shop live, just because the song feels so much like a personal conversation between BTS and ARMY. It would be amazing to be part of it in person.

Gorgeous song… they did it absolutely perfection… but jk in this especially in his end harmonys and ad libs… chills everytime man … I love them doing this song… never disappoints

I've seen a lot of videos of this live and behind cuts where they literally ad lib the harmonies. At one practice Suga had a live mic and was messing with them. 🤣 There's a performance where Tae had such a sore throat he couldn't start the song and he broke down in tears when he realized the crowd was singing his part. I think that was what happened with Jimin once, too. There's also one where one of them messed something up and Jungkook tried to look like he was crying but he and Jin were trying to control their laughter. Anyway it's a very sad and beautiful song and story. Thanks for reacting to it.

Glad that you're back! I wouldn't say I'm an ARMY, just a sucker for lyrical analysis and I like listening to your interpretations:). One of the reasons I like songs in foreign languages is that you have to look up the lyrics which is like reading poems. Idk just the fact that you don't know what the song is about when you first hear it and only later finding out brings a whole new dimension to it imo

If you like ballads, you might want to react to BTS’ Your Eyes Tell. It’s in Japanese, there is no MV, and this is an OST for a Japanese movie of the same title (which is a remake of a Korean movie, “Always”). It’s a love story about a blind woman and an ex-convict (or something like that). It’s one of my fave BTS songs. And each member shone through, even the rap line IMHO. Please check out the live version with English subs for this one :) then you can compare it to the studio version :)

i'm pretty amazed that you made out even as much from the song, not knowing, making the connection with the Smeraldo legend. pretty good Brad .😊💜 I think this song (and your reaction/interpretation) shows what NamJoon once said in an album review: BTS puts songs to an album following a concept, a story, that they want to tell. It's important to listen to the albums completely, from start to end, in the order the songs were put on it, to get a full picture. It's kind of like reading a book. you need to read it beginning to end, for it to be understood. if later, you really liked a chapter, you can read just one part, bc you already have the storyline. I'm not saying this to critique you Brad, it's maybe more of an advice to baby ARMYs, who want to get in to BTS more. 💜💜💜💜💜
