He was one of the best flatfoot dancers I have ever seen. We will sadly miss him. He was my favorite dancer. RIP dancing buddy. You are greatly miss with us old dancers.
I didn't know Paul passed. I'm so sorry to hear this awful news. he was truly the best of the best. rest peacefully, Paul, and thank you for the many years of enjoyment. there will never be another.
Bluegrass is one of the best enjoyable music in the whole world, full of fun and happiness, take from me I am cuban as a latino many people dont know what they are missing out
So very similar to U.K. Northern Soul dancing. This gentleman could take the floor at an all-nighter and put guys in their 20's to shame. Absolute buck-dancing legend.
Could you please share some video of the type of UK dancing you mentioned then tag me in the discription or comments so I won't miss seeing it. I've very interested in other cultures and lifestyles. I suppose that explains why I did so well in college while taking subjects like history and anthropology.
Mr Paul Shelnutt is dancing our heritage. Buck dancing, clogging & flat footing dancing as well as our Old Time Bluegrass music came over to VA, TN, NC, &KY by our Scottish-Irish ancestors in the 1600s. We are proud of our heritage and we sure will miss Paul this year at the Bluegrass festivals. God rest his soul. He passed away at the age of 70 this past Oct. When this Video was made he was only 62. So it really bothers us here in the south when people call him an OLD MAN. This is degrading him. Thanks for your nice comment. It takes a lot of energy and you have to keep dancing these three dances regularly in order to keep dancing these. I am there and know it. RIP dear friend Paul.
@@2martins The dancing Mr. Paul Shelnutt is doing is Buck dancing. This as well as flatfooting and clogging as well as Bluegrass Music was brought to VA, TN, NC and KY in the 1600s by our ancestors from the Scottish-Irish. We love our heritage and want to keep it alive. We will sure miss Paul. He passed away at the age of 70 this past Oct. When the video was made in this site he was only 62 years old. But he didn't stop dancing up until he passed away. He went somewhere here in the south to a bluegrass festival every weekend. He was one of a kind. We loved watching him and dancing with him too. Best in the nation that is for sure.
Hats off to these fine gentlemen!!! I pray that my knees and ankles hold up long enough to dance after I reach the years they have earned!!!! God Bless you!
Ol' Rattler was a song, originally recorded by the legendary Grandpa Jones in the 40s or 50s. Grandpa Jones hailed from Kentucky. He also was a regular on the Country show Hee Haw.
Thank you . I couldn't take my eyes and ears off of the musicians or the dancers. I just love things that connect back to our heritage and a simpler way of life. This Summertown festival was by far the one where I had the most fun plus there were so many pick'n circles to enjoy playing with. There was one group of kids, the oldest may have been 17, that had a player for each of the typical bluegrass instruments. I was blown away when I heard them playing in their own pick'n circle. Their musicianship and skill level on each of their instruments was way beyond their age level.
Thank you. Old Time Bluegrass at it's best and the best Buck stepper in the Nation. RIP dear friend Paul Shelnutt. We love and miss you at the Old Time Bluegrass music.
Paul is the best buck dancer in the Nation. I am a clogger and love to watch him and Thomas Maupin Buck dance. RiP dear Paul. You are going to be truly miss at the festivals this year. You are one of a kind.
Why aren't there more people out there dancing to bluegrass like these guys! I love bluegrass, but I won't go to bluegrass shows because nobody dances and if you dance you are a freak. These guys are awesome dancers, I want to see more. Let's start a bluegrass dancing revolution!!! I am serious.
I've seen videos of Bill Monroe playing with his band and sometimes hed get so carried away by the music he bust loose and buck dance on stage holding his mandolin.
So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr Shelnutt. I will keep watching these videos as the years go by as watching him is watching cultural history in practice. From a (now saddened) fan in the UK.
Damn the fact my dad wanted a better life. He was from the Appalachians, all I yearn for is this life. I visited the Appalachians a few times in my life and I truly would not mind the simple yet poor lifestyle.
I'm from the Bronx, but I love this stuff, especially the silver guy with mismatched socks. I would love to see this in person and maybe join in the dancing. This looks fun. I'm tired of pop, rap, rock, salsa, merengue, freestyle, and other music.
I watched this earlier today and it has gotten stuck in my head. All day long I've been singing, "Rattler was a good old dog, as blind as he could be - But every night at suppertime, I believe that dog could see Here, Rattler, here, here, Rattler, here Call old Rattler from the barn, here, Rattler, here I only wish I could dance and sing and play like these boys do. But my dogs seem to think I sound pretty good!
He was only 62 when this video was made. He passed away this past Oct 2021 at the age of 70. We sure will miss him at the Bluegrass festivals and other places he went to dance here in the South. RIP our dear friend Paul Shelnutt. I know you are dancing in that happy dancing ground in the sky.
i love the style of this dancer =) my grandfather past away at 20.12.2020 and i hope this grandfather in the video is fine today and is dancing like 2013
Thank you great video thumbs up all the way. My very first time to see this joyful music with dance thank you for all music band & camera person too till next joyful day keep smiling with lol politely & safely dance ,happy
Due to Covid I'm not certain if this very large twice per year festival is still being held. You can Google it and find out by searching for: The Summertown Bluegrass Festival. (In TN) Also there's a big bluegrass blowout once each year at Mountain View, AR. Even when the blowout isn't going on they have bluegrass jams nearly every Friday and Saturday night. They have it on the town square. The musicians huddle up in pick'n circles of 4-8 musicians and there are several of these circles. There's a concessions vender or two, the kids are completely safe playing tag, hide and seek, and catching light'n bugs as the older women sit in lounge chairs and knit while enjoying the music and each other's company. There are campgrounds, cabins for rent, motels, and B&B all in the area.
@@abmrose No. My biggest challenge in retirement is ironically managing all this free time. I've accomplished some goals, lost weight, getting into better physical shape and other things but I haven't found the discipline yet to fit everything in. We'll see. Retirement is still a work in progress, but I'm loving it.
I’m shocked that a person of color would post that they like this. Just like they had “Whites Only” signs they had signs that said “ No Mexicans or Spanish people “ allowed. This was the only dance the slaves were allowed to do at special occasions. This can be considered a review of history, or racist as hell. Not the music being reviewed, but the fact white people are calling it having fun. Bluegrass is another genre or music just like rock,gospel,hip-hop,...etc. this is my comment of opinion and if you don’t like it ......
It’s so neat how many genres of music that were created in the US. Bluegrass is a combination of multiple cultures including Irish, African, and Native American. The banjo originated in Africa, the jigs from Ireland/Scotland, and some steps/rhythms from Natives.
I had such a fun time playing my guitar with all the various pick'n circles. There was about 2,500 musicians there playing in groups of 4-8 each day of this four day festival.
I just Googled Paul Shelnutt 's obituary, and I was surprised to find out that he was a Vietnam veteran. So, Paul Shelnutt, thank you for your service to our country.
The only people that say that are anti white racists. Ballet, tango, classical ball room, swing, disco, tap dancing, line dancing, sword dancing..... ALL WHITE dances. Just because white people dont dance the new popular rap music dances doesn't mean we can't, it just means we are not inspired by a culture like rap that promotes ignorant, hateful, low I.q. Violence and degeneracy. Plus, gangsta style is ridiculous. Big shoes, colorful oversized clothes... Rappers look like clowns and dance like them too
@@adriannasanchez468 Ma'am, Tango is definitely of African origin. Swing, modern tap dancing, and disco have roots in Black America as well. No need to be hateful, racist, and inaccurate. And also, no one wears oversized clothes anymore. Have a blessed day.
Yeah he's won many Buck dancing championships he died a couple years ago but he was a real nice guy and boy that dude can flat out shuffle them feet I wondered about those socks and if you were different colored socks so that he could keep up with which was the left and which was the right or who knows lol.
