I know, it sounds weird🤨 I saw the show in it's original run, so watching these reaction channels the last few years to Buffy and seeing how they can forgive Spike for all the bad things he's done only because they think he's so handsome, has really made me hate the character even more🤷‍♂️

I love how people are seemingly able to forgive Angel, Darla & Dru for centuries of DAILY murder, yet have a problem with Spike because of one thing they don’t like. How many men, women & children have they murdered, not to mention raped & tortured over the years? Thousands? Tens of thousands? Talk about being shortsighted..

Right. Accents. Anthony Stewart Head puts on a posh accent for the role even though his natural accent is Cockney. He coached James Marsters in a Cockney accent for the role of Spike. It gets better over time but in this episode it was rushed and he was still getting used to the prosthetic fangs.

Oh noes ! I'm surprised at the misinformation from a fan after all these years - neither Antony's real accent or Spike's is Cockney! Drusilla's accent is Cockney. Anthony Head's accent is North London, not East London, and that is the accent that Spike has, and was fortunate enough to be able to learn from Tony on set. I'm guessing that you are American and think that a working class London accent is called Cockney - no - you have to be born with in the sound of the Bow Bells to be a Cockney. It is a working class East London accent - well a small area of East London actually. We have several working class accents for London, there is a very definite South and North one, in particular. Then there are the posh accents, and general southern England accents middle calls accents, and received pronunciation, that are not specific to London, but spoken here. Yes, I'm a Londoner. Saaarrf London , mate. ( South London , lol). I knew that someone was gonna say Spike was Cockney, when he never ever has been. I bet at least one other person has as well.

@@bellatronics You're not wrong, but you're not completely correct either. The modern Essex (North of London and where I'm from) accent is actually closer to the original Cockney accent than you would find in London today. ASH's real accent is closer to Cockney than Giles' RP accent. To be a true Cockney, you are correct, you would have to have developed the accent within earshot of Bow Bells, but you don't technically have had to have been brought up there to have developed that particular accent, you just wouldn't be classed as a 'True Cockney'. ASH's real accent is EE (Estuary English) a hybrid of Cockney and RP.

3:40 James Marsters is american, but his role is not. So Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) worked with him to improve his british accent.

One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign. School Hard is one of the greatest episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Season.

I thought you said 'he' too - and I though, no wonder she can't figure out if he's attractive or not ! it's a bit weird to be attracted to someone the spitting image of your cousin. :D :D Awkwaaard !!! For the record, a huge amount of people find James stunningly attractive here, and he had a massive fan base that was partly due to that as well as his good acting and charismatic character he plays. Though not for everyone of course, beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that. :) Twas a weird one for me at the time, really shook me up as the only man I had ever been attracted to at that point. I was like bloody hell !! I must be a bit bi at least. I know quite a few fans that have said that Spike/James has caused them to question their sexuality, or be the person when they were young that made them aware of their sexuality. :D I find Dru absolutely gorgeous too, and find them a stunning , yet dark and gothic couple.

"She's giving me Jinx vibes..." As someone who's seen both Arcane and Buffy, I can inform you right here and now- Jinx is probably a far safer person to be around than Drusilla. Think about all the lore you heard about vampires. They're demons that take over a dead body, but take the memories and something of the personality of the dead human. Then imagine what happens if someone who's exactly as crazy as Jinx with all those mental issues is turned into a vampire. Take all of Jinx's crazy, and then add the BtVS vampire's sadistic delight in causing pain and death. Spike is actually the stable and grounded half of that relationship.

"She's constantly working and saving and getting no credit for it." Well like the song says, "Wealth and fame, he's ignored, action is his reward" pretty much holds true for all superhero types like Buffy. "School Hard" one of the best of the second season, things only get better from here

Every good hero's journey needs a villain and Spike is just so gleefully evil he adds what the show needs. This is the episode I mean when I tell new Buffy watchers to just wait, the show gets so much better. This is the one where that process really gets kicked off.

When I first saw Spike I really thought he had a real English accent. Anthony Stewart Head even helped him on the accent. When I first heard James Marsters American accent on Smallville I thought it was fake. Maybe it's because I'm American that it sounded so well to me.

@@lenr112 Of course, in this episode, Spikes accent isn't so much British, or American, but just mostly 'teeth'. They must of done a good job on the prosthetic after that - so they just overdubbed him when in 'vamp' mode.

@@lenr112 Yeah I mean when I first saw this when it came out I was like 8 or 9 so I had not heard much of actual English accents on American shows. At the time it sounded close enough to Giles that I thought he really was. But hearing his true accent after first seeing him on this show was wild! It still sounds weird to me today lol.

@@UTU49 But I always think that Angel has never watched Star Wars in his life, and has no awareness of it. He's just not a pop culture type of guy! Spent too much time brooding, and too much time wallowing in alleys avoiding humans for decades ( All safe! Dakara is at 3x16). So I always think that Angel had no clue what Spike was on about and who Yoda is, though of course he knows exactly what sire means since it is their own vampire term. I have seen this bought up , usually in a humourous way, in loads of fanfics, but never in any of the discussions on fan reaction vids. And nether is the fact that Spike is a Star Wars fan ever mentioned ! People are too busy getting excited about the fact that Spike has arrived. :D It's an important clue to the character of this vampire though - that he enjoys human things, like films, also shown by him and Dru going off to watch tv together. Quite different to the vamps from season 1 eh.

The actor who plays Spike also played Captain John Hart on Torchwood. And one of the dads in Marvel's Runaways. And yes, he is hot. More attractive than David Boreanaz in my opinion.

James does such a good job with his accent (and I'm an American who grew up in England) that even all this time later it's still weird to hear him talk with his natural accent. Of course it's not perfect but it's as close as any American I've ever heard. Cheers.

Well, he *eventually* manages to make a decent job of the accent. In *this* episode, though? The accent's absolutely dreadful in this episode, largely because up until the very last minute, he was told that he should be playing the character with a Texan cowboy accent. Once you know that, it's easy to hear that cowboy accent bleeding through in a number of places here. One of my favorite things about British reactors is watching them reach this episode and struggle to figure out what on earth Spike's accent is even supposed to be. Fortunately, he does improve quite dramatically later on.

Finally you meet spike!! One of the great characters on this show. On season 7 of spn "shut up dr phil" when I found out James and charisma were going to guest star I was so excited. Even that episode you could see the chemistry all around

Already a patreon, but still going to watch this, as it's always worth seeing Spike's introduction all over again. Many people say that Xander finding a sanitary product in Buffy's purse, then Spike saying "I smell the blood of a young ripe girl" think others read too much into those scenes, and putting any sort of significance into them is a bit of a stretch. All I'd say is that the writer deliberately wrote those two scenes, and that line of dialogue, and put them into the same episode only 20mins apart. Yeah, that was deliberate.

And so we meet William the Bloody, aka Spike, and what a fun ride we are getting on.... (more fun and less ritual, just the way he called it...lol).... Glad that the "Annoying One" is finally out of the picture... I read somewhere that the character was originally expected to do more but Whedon decided it would be best to write him out as it would be extremely hard to keep showing a child vamp that supposedly doesn't age, and he already looks a little older than he did in S1... so best of all worlds...... and we get Spike so big win for us! Great reaction D, and loved seeing your Mum pride relating going on.... and you get a CTU from me today! Keep em coming!

yes spike is british, he became a vampire in the days of old england. the reason Spike lost to Buffy is because the previous slayers he beat were alone, that is usually how slayers fight, but Buffy had friends and family supporting her. Spike didn't take that into account.

And James Marsters said he based Spike's accent on Giles (actual English actor), but American English accents are usually some cartoon version of cockney (and i have no idea how to spell that). xander was rejected by buffy, which he blames for Angel being around, Angel likes Buffy and Buffy likes angel, but they are not rushing anything and I think that makes xander think he still would have a chance if Angel was not in the picture and Angel is ofc jealous of Xander being alive and can be with buffy all the time, even if just as a friend

I guess you missed that Xander freaked a bit when he pulled a tampon from Buffy's bag? Or that Joyce hit Spike with the flat of the axe because she's not a murderous fiend. And did you miss the Snyder and the cop mentioning The Truth? Regardless, they retcon which of them sired Spike, in the future; but yes, Angelus *was* his Yoda.

Kinda. That was Joss's idea. But he was a bit clueless about what Sid was actually like. James always says that Spike is a lot more like Jonney Rotten. And he's absolutely right. But it's the unhealthy besotted romance that causes the Sid & Nancy comparison. Ah, actually I remember now, James' story is that he was asked to 'give us Sid' and he was like - 'no, you really don't want me playing Sid, you want your punk vampire to be Jonny Rotten and that's who I'm gonna give you.'

You did NOT just call Willow "Powder"!!! Oh...I thought you were talking about the MOVIE "Powder". How old am I that my first thought was a movie from 1995?!?!?! (Yes. I've also seen Arcane.) Hellooo SPIKE!!! Now you must decide, who is hotter? Spike, or, Angel. (Bwahahahahaha) Ok...you're definitely not wrong about Xander being the "Chandler" of the show. "Spike has killed 2 slayers..." Stakes just got raised (ALL pun intended). Back at The Bronze Xander is trying to find a stake in Buffy's purse and pulls out a tampon. At the school Spike says, "...I smell the blood of a nice...Ripe...Girl." The "Annoying One" is finally gone!!!

Always try to keep it affordable. My impala tier will be going up to £2 in the next month or so just to cover the inflation of the mess of the world we’re in (can barely afford a food shop these days) but I haven’t raised prices ever, I just added new tiers in the past
