Willow legging it off the stage at the end was improvised - Buffy and Xander looking startled wasn't acting, they really didn't know she was going to do that!

I don't get why people think the puppet looks bad. It's a literal wooden puppet both in-universe and outside and it looks and moves exactly like a crappy wooden puppet would. It's not supposed to be a flashy and agile cgi monster and that's what makes it even more funny.

This is the first Buffy episode I ever saw. My housemates had been watching from the start and kept telling me it was a good show, but since I worked the nights it aired, and our VCR was broken, I'd never been able to watch it with them. To be honest, I wasn't at all convinced that I'd like it. My housemates were generally much fonder of action-adventure genre stuff than I was, and from the few ad spots I'd seen, I wasn't left with the impression that this show was the sort of thing I'd enjoy. But then, the week this episode aired, I was home from work with a nasty cold, so I finally watched that silly cheerleader-fights-vampires show my housemates had all been talking about with them. And yes, indeed, I was utterly charmed by it. Enough so, in fact, that I insisted we get the VCR fixed so I wouldn't have to miss any more of them.

The evil puppet cliché being twisted on its head is, to this day, I think, still original, in that you don't see many, if any, _good_ puppet characters under this context. I think both Giles and Willow are book smart (read it in a book and spit what you've read back out). Giles just sticking his head in the guillotine, even without knowing Mark is the demon doesn't show he puts book knowledge to as much use as the demon might need for smarts. And Willow is still too young and naïve for the kind of smarts the demon would need. The network made a comment to the writers about the end credit scene about their nervousness of the "sex with mom" moment and called it Shakespeare. I still laugh hard at that.

The network did more than comment. They cut it from repeat airings. It was added back on the DVDs and repeat airings on other stations. (I also still laugh at their "we know it's Shakespeare, but...")

“If you don’t like kids, why are you a principal?” I can tell you, after 11 years as a teacher… I started out thinking kids were the best thing in the world. I hate them now. The very few genuinely sweet and nice kids are like a shining beacon among the sea of horrible little snots. 😂 And yes, I’m trying to change careers before I lose even that last little sliver of hope LOL!

the underwear thing is about confidence and humilation. people struggle to perform on stage with an audience because they are afraid how the crowd will react...but if you picture them in underwear then you know that they are in a place of awkwardness and that gives you more reasurance.

I was never a fan of the 'villain of the week' episodes, but this one is one of my favourite ep in S1. They portrait the evil puppet cliche in scary movies so well, I was totally fooled the first time I watched it. And then the unexpected twist: a (wooden) suit does not make the man (dummy)! The final scene is hilarious: when the curtain opens, you just see the scene through the spectators' eyes: 'I don't get it' Lol It's the perfect representation of the classic comedy. But also of the classic tragedy: the monster is defeated, the hero's body carried in triumph after the ultimate sacrifice. And then there's Snyder! Remember: he won't allow people to be eaten in his school.... and also smoking...

The Puppet Show IMO was a good episode for a few reasons: it gave us a massive red herring (it tried to make you think the dummy was evil when it was something else) it introduces the new principle in a very good way (and the reference ot the old one is hilarious) you learn about Buffy, willow and xander's dislike for theatre this is the first time you hear mention of previous Slayers

The principal isn't the monster of this episode, but that doesn't mean he's good either. He clearly cannot stand children or teenagers. But I knew Armin Shimerman from before Buffy when he played Quark on Star Trek Deep Space 9 and before that when he was a recurring character on the Beauty and the Beast tv series starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. Good actor. But we will never like Principal Snyder as much as we liked Principal Flutie. But then, Principal Flutie got eaten by the students, so somebody had to do the job. The question is, who would want to be principal at a school where the last principal was literally eaten by students?

Hmmm...just watched it, I really like the character development in that one. You probably put it together later that the Kiddie League coach was the ugly man - he caught up to Billy after the game and assaulted him so badly it put the kid in a coma, which is why the coach ended up behind bars where he definitely belonged.
