This past December (hence the Christmas decor) we gifted a local church w/ a Keys Rig Makeover. In order to help others who may be considering a rig upgrade, we recorded the entire process from gear decisions to setting everything up so they can use it for years to come.
Trying to research this on your own could leave you with a long list of questions (and a headache):
What gear do I actually need?
How do I know everything is compatible?
Will I be able to train my volunteers to use this gear?
Why is everything so expensive!?
This video lays it all out step by step with a fresh approach to modernize your keys rig with a quality setup your volunteers will love.
After watching this video you'll have:
1. Solid gear recommendations that won't destroy your ministry budget
2. A reliable keys rig that's volunteer friendly
3. Longterm Professional Results

Hey, David! Thanks for the video, it really got me inspired. Wish our church had the budget for such an awesome gear update but maybe we'll get there as time moves on. I'm currently using 2012 Macbook Pro (upgraded it to 250Gb SSD and 8Gb RAM) alongside church Korg PA500 (sometimes I think this thing predates the Universe). A few questions I have in my head: 1. What's the benefit of using powered USB hub? You still plug it into your laptop USB port, right? So it should be getting its power anyway. 2. How did you fix the hub beneath the laptop stand? Double-sided sticky tape? 3. How do you keep Korg Nanokontrol in place? I don't know, maybe it's just me but when I move sliders on my KNK - the whole thing moves along with it. Again, double-sided sticky tape?
@SundaySounds
@SundaySounds 2 года назад
Hi Lumios! Glad you were inspired! To answer your questions: 1 - Powered USB hubs tend to be more reliable as they receive power from an outlet to then power all the devices connected to them. If you have lots of power hungry devices plugged into a hub (say a hard drive or two) that can sometimes cause more power requirements than what your computer's usb hub is rated for, which in turn can cause random disconnects. A powered usb hub tends to eliminate that issue. Some hubs like the one we are using also have power delivery - so its actively charging the Macbook at the same time - eliminating the need for a power cord (and also freeing up a valuable usb port - this model only has 2). 2 & 3 - We used some heavy duty velcro for both

Hi David I keep circling back to this video but I can seem to figure this out I just bought a MacBook Pro for my rig at church. When I connect my Nano, Audio Interface, and Midi Keyboard (SL88) into a type c adapter it doesnt register the Keyboard into mainstage. Im not sure how yall connect yours but it would help a lot!

Hi David this video has been super helpful! Thanks for all you do ive literally watched most of your videos and if it wasnt for those I would have not been able to learn setup our current rig...in my church we are in the process of upgrading our gear as well because our hardware is just too old exactly like this video so I wanted to ask about two things...first we are thinking of getting a macbook pro becase we want to run prime to the in ear monitors and use mainstage for the piano patches so in your opinion should I stick with a pro or would a new M1 macbook air handle both softwares simultaneously?...also we have an old focusrite saffire thats just too old to be compatible with the newer macbooks so I wanted to get your thoughts on getting a presonus VS a scarlett for our rig.

We haven't tried running both at on the same machine, if you are going to try that we would recommend upgrading to 16GB of ram. You might also consider running either Prime or Sunday Keys from an iPad to keep the setup a bit simpler and audio separate.

I just recently re-watched the M1 MacBook Air video and am considering it vs. a MacBook Pro for a strictly church-owned keys rig. What would you say are the criteria for considering upgrading to 16GB vs. 8GB? Would it only be based on the addition of plugins like Omnisphere or Native Instruments?
@SundaySounds
@SundaySounds 2 года назад
For MainStage using a M1 mac with only 8GB has been enough in all our testing with Sunday Keys - but it does seem to use close to all 8GB when just running MainStage. For 3rd party plugins like Omni, Piano Plugins, or even Ableton Live 16GB is highly recommended.

This is great but as a REAL beginner I need to know how everything connects and with what kind of cables! You said yourself “…after some obsessive cable management…” Too obsessed to share? I‘ll probably figure it out but am a bit perturbed that I need to reinvent the wheel. I’m not angry and so appreciate what you HAVE put out there for all the BIC’s buying your product but thought it might be helpful to you to hear a real audio infant’s frustration. I can’t wait to get past the setup stage! My gear is in the Mail as we speak. 🙂 Thanks again for all the info.

@SundaySounds 2 года назад
Hello, as far as connections go, there can be a ton of different approaches based on the gear you use and the system you are connecting to, so there isn't really a one-size-fits-all approach here. However, if you do have any trouble getting things connected don't hesitate to reach out to our customer support and we can help walk you through the process. sundaysounds.com/contact If you are using an audio interface, you would connect that to your computer, then in your software (such as MainStage) set the audio output in preferences to that interface. Then run audio cables to your sound board from the audio interface. These will probably be 1/4 cables depending on your audio interface's output i/o. If you aren't using an interface, then the headphone jack is pretty simple to setup, use a 1/8" to 1/4" trs cable from the headphone jack to your sound board. Both interface/headphone jack solutions will likely require you to use a DI box before you connect to the sound board. If you need more usb ports/usb a, then you can connect everything using a usb hub like we did in the video. Most keyboards will connect via usb to your computer. If you are using an audio interface that has midi ports, you could also run your keyboard into the audio interface via midi cables that way.

Hi, now that it has been a year more - did you find any beginner piano that will be portable and allowed in economy class hand carry airlines specifically from saudi or canada to philippines ? I want something to learn with as a beginner and will last a lifetime - same with roland fp30x but I want it to be way lighter - either synth or real weighted piano. Pls help ❤ I am looking forward to buying this piano from saudi arabia. I just bought roland fp30x from a music store yesterday - but i will return it back because of this video ❤️ I never played piano but I am really willing to learn - I hope someday you make step by step piano tutorials for beginners & I will watch day and night after buying same piano as yours. 1.) One also concern is - if you take this to your gigs - can you use a normal X piano stand to hold it in place while playing? or do you always do need a flat surface? 2.) Changing that built-in battery how hard is it to replace? Is it easily replaceable in any battery shops?
@destinychurchincheyennewyo8865
Hey David, I have all of the equipment, signed up and watched your MainStage Basic Course, but I must have missed how to connect the Korg nanoKontrol2. I'm connecting it through an old Yamaha P250, so it will need to use the midi in and out cables. Do you have a diagram connecting keyboard, nanoKontrol and macbook?
@SundaySounds
@SundaySounds Год назад
We just plug the nanoKontrol 2 direct into the Macbook. If your Mac only has USB C ports, you could use a USB Hub, or what we usually do is just have a USB Mini to USB C cable for that to connect direct to the Mac.

@danzirvine
@danzirvine 2 года назад
you are never going to get a Mainstage setup for PC. Mainstage is a apple based product developed by apple as a live performance counterpart to their musical creation package Logic. Sunday Keys worship template on the other hand has been made for Mainstage and Ableton Live. Ableton live is another music making package rivaling Logic but was initially made for Live performance Since 2001, in turn it can be run on stage and used in the recording studio to compose tracks. It is available for Mac and PC.

Hi David, again just want to ask, is 256gb ssd internal storage could handle storage space if i want to use not only mainstage, but other apps like logic pro, ableton, & omnisphere?
@SundaySounds
@SundaySounds 2 года назад
You might want to consider upgrading the storage if possible, or look at picking up an external solid state drive that you can store the sound libraries on (you get more storage for your $ this way). MainStage and Omnisphere sound libraries take up around 60GB each. You can store them externally, but then you have to have that drive connected anytime you use them.

Hi David..do you think the MBA M1 has the same power with the new MBA M2 to run mainstage 3?
@SundaySounds
@SundaySounds 2 года назад
We recommend the MacBook Air M1 for a MainStage keys rig, you should be good with 8GB of Memory unless you plan to use other 3rd party software like Omnisphere or Native Instruments, then we recommend upgrading to 16GB of memory (or if you plan to use Ableton Live you need 16GB memory). We haven't seen real world performance yet with the M2, but so far the M2 MacBook Air seems like a slight performance upgrade (can upgrade with more than 16GB memory), with a better design (yay for Magsafe!). If you're on a budget the M1 MacBook Air is a solid choice still.

@SundaySounds
@SundaySounds 2 года назад
You use an audio interface to output sound from your computer to the sound board. They typically have balanced outputs so you get a more reliable signal than just using your headphone jack. You also tend to get lower latency using an audio interface. Depending on what model you get, you might also be able to connect other midi hardware into it. Some models also have multiple output pairs so you can send just piano on one, pads on another, etc.
