You can get an extremely powerful rackmount server for dirt cheap off eBay. A 40 core 80 thread machine will cost you about $500 USD. Though this sounds like an incredible deal, most people will still shy away from these bargain behemoths and instead build something with a fraction of the power for the same price.
I think one of the main reason mainstream consumers tend to stay away from enterprise servers mainly has to do with their form factor. Chances are, you don't have a server rack at home and you don't want to buy a desktop rack because they look terrible. Today, we are going to try to solve this issue by building a wooden case to house this HP ProLiant in.

I think the main reasons why people don't go for these for home use is because a.) Single-core performance on these is not that good, since they're made to run server software in VMs (web servers, e-mail servers, databases, etc.) which don't require a lot of CPU b.) They're very power-hungry, so expect your electricity bills to double

They are GREAT for video rendering from what i know, but many people only want to game in them, so yeah. And they are really too noisy

@@eduardoavila646 You are right. But rendering is a multi-core operation. That's why people use servers like these in render farms.

@@needfulart4510 Yep. Most home users use tasks that benefit way more from singlecore performance than multicore. But i must say, i would love to have one of these servers, my i5 struggles hard and even bottlenecks my 1060 in rendering. Unfortunatly here where i live, used servers are too expensive, and importing stuff is also awmost impossible.

When you drill holes in a finished surface, you can place a scrap of unfinished wood on top of and beneath the finished one and drill all the way through that. it will minimize the damage to the finished board.

masking or duct-tape will also do, not as good, but will do, depending on the size of the hole

That metal ends you cutoff is the faceplate of the 1U chassis, it screws into the rack and prevents the chassis from sliding all the back into rack frame when mounted on to the rack rails, like a drawer for a cabinet.

I would build a wooden case from whitish 1cm-2cm thick wood. Starting with at least 6 big square rubber feet, then the base with some 5mm holes, then 4 side pieces for back, left, right, and front panels, these panels being screwed to each other and to the bottom, the back having 1 or 2 square holes where would fit 12cm fans, then an hole for power cable and another hole for lan/vga/other cables, maybe not holes but square cuts from top backside to allow cables to be added without effort and a rubber square block to make cables get still. The top side would have same dimensions as bottom and having 4 screws to tight it to lateral sides. Top of bottom base would have thick rubber pads to avoid vibrations, and some other stuff. and yet... some varnish finish and the AA logo at top.

I got the case of a IBM PS2 model 60-071 It's hecking huge, Fits my 1U server perfectly :)

Talk about the heat and power usage on those old old servers. Plus the expensive shipping. I don’t do any 1U server (only for low power appliances like a firewall), as they are too loud with the small fans.

nice build coming along here. Just gained a new sub. I actually quite like how well that wood turned out once stained. As for the drill holes I see some others have already said this, they wasn't wood bits and someone else suggested to put scrap wood under and above to reduce the burr. 1 other thing you should really do is slightly smaller pilot holes then go through with the size you actually want, while drilling this gives the material room to move a little there for wont force itself up od down so much causing the damage. Just another tip for the future ;)

Are you sure you wouldn't rather just purchase a small rack that could fit under or next to a table? I see a StarTech 8U 2-post Rack on Amazon for $34 right now. You'll also need to buy either 2-post rails for the server or at least a rack shelf to support it, and hopefully those will come with enough cage nuts and screws, but that sounds like a far better option to me.

I bought a Dell PowerEdge R810 from eBay with 2 10 Core Xeons and 128GB RAM for £450 ($580). I installed Windows 10 Pro which gave me one problem, the Dell website only has drivers for Windows Server for the onboard Ethernet. I installed an Ethernet card to resolve that issue. I also installed a GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card but I cannot configure it to use the card during POST so I have to use a monitor plugged into the onboard VGA port but once it loads Windows I have it set to use the monitor on the graphics card as the only display.

While I admire your effort to do it yourself,was this really that cost effective? Amazon Rosewill 2U Server Chassis would only run you $76. Might be a bit safer then using wood!

If all you need is a rack to mount the server. One popular solution is the Ikea Lack side table.

I would love this to be in a isolated box, with water cooling on the cpu's with the rads mounted on the outside.. Would work best with a 2u or 3u case with noctua fans for minimal airflow inside.. while you're at it.. screw the whole thing under your desk and there u go.. a silent server grade pc (i would use the many cores as a streaming pc or game server etc..) Great video.. (Although if I were you i would save myself alot of time just buying wood wich do not require sanding)

When the host cut the mounting tabs(the "ears") off the front corners of the box the unit was permanently damaged. The OCD part of my personality was deeply offended, and I stopped watching the video after that. I know from experience, keep the tabs!

@@morosis82 Yeah, at best he could have drilled out the rivets so they could be added back later. My HP DL360p has a couple status lights inside the plastic ear tab covers. You wouldn't want to remove these. Keep the tabs... A new world movement...

Line the inside with some sound dampening foam, in between the bits of wood on the top. Will cut down a bunch of noise.

With all do respect, and I mean all do, server are very pipertary with their connections especially power supplies. hardware raid is better than software raid. Servers are really not meant to throw video cards in, while you can do it they make special gpus for vdi, along with you can do virtualization with servers spin up many vms using esxi or hyper v, I really enjoy your videos man and projects but there is so much more you can do with this server. You’re best bang for buck is really going and getting a workstation for what your looking to do.

Yeah, if you're after a desktop, a workstation like the HP z series, or Dell precision, or whatever would be a better choice. Generally about the same cost as rackmount for this old gear, more flexible for desktop type workloads.
