In this video I show how to make a driveshaft to connect my 4L80E transmission to the stock E39 medium case differential. This required making an adapter to connect to the E39's unique 6 bolt pinion flange. I used 1350 u-joints and yokes from Spicer and a driveshaft tube from swracecars.com. I do need to have it professionally balanced, but this gets the car mobile.

Years ago we would use that Same Spicer piece for running pumps on Roll Off Trucks that used a drive shaft to operate the pump.

Glad to see it went together like you planned.

Anyway I can get one of those adapters for myself? You'd be saving my life!

Does it matter on the color of the power steering fluid? The old power steering fluid in my 2003 gmc envoy was red but I replaced it with a clear power steering fluid that said it was good for suvs

Is there anyway I can get an update or an adapter made for myself? I have a 89 535i with and LS1 in it and currently looking to go one piece driveshaft with no luck! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

The adapter works well. In hindsight, I probably should’ve balanced the adapter. Sorry I wouldn’t be able to make you one because I have no idea what the dimensions of your diff pinion flange are and I’m sure they’re different than my e39. Check out Seems Legit Garage. They might have an adapter for your car.

I've noticed oil filters will say they can last up to 20,000 miles but oil should be changed every 5,000 so what would you say if I just changed the oil and not the filter until 20,000 miles?

I always change the filter when I change the oil. I have actually seen some oil filters become restricted and cause lower oil pressure before the “change engine oil” light came on. On newer vehicles the oil life monitor will allow you to go almost 10,000 miles and from my experience, the filter becomes restricted by then. The reason an engine oil filter becomes restricted is because there is combustion happening inside of the engine and it’s producing other contaminants and acids. Also fuel contamination of the oil and thermal breakdown due to the heat of the oil.

You're inspiring me to LS swap one of these E39s! Do you know if the 5-series e39 engine bay is the same size as the 7-series E38 or E65? I'm planning on a single turbo LS setup in an e39 5 series but it looks like there won't be much room between the accessories and the radiator (unless the stock fan shroud is just extra bulky). Thanks

I believe the e38 is very similar to the e39. I have plenty of clearance between the radiator and front of the engine on mine. These engine bays were made to fit a long inline six and a wide DOHC V8. Most turbo ls e39s that I’ve seen have the turbo mounted on the right front of the engine bay.

@Pete's Garage I noticed the 6 cylinder E39s get an aluminum subframe while the v8 E39 540s got the steel subframe, do you think the aluminum one will need to be upgraded?
@PetesGarageandperformance

I’d use the aluminum one because it has rack and pinion steering which allows you to be able to run a rear sump oil pan. The v8 subframe uses a conventional steering setup and a front sump oil pan. The only factory LS front sump pans were the GTO and trailblazer pans. Many of the people who start with a v8 vehicle swap out to a 6 cylinder subframe for an easier swap.

@@PetesGarageandperformance I guess with BMW everything is so over-engineered that the aluminum subframe will be more than adequate for turbo LS power
