I am preparing for a deep winter backpacking trip. With so much gear to bring, I was a little bummed out about carrying the weight on my back in the deep mountain snow. But after doing some research and determining that there is a better way...I decided to build myself an expedition sled. Also known as a Pulk Sled, I have selected the Jet Sled Jr as the basis for my build. In this video, I go through the process of converting this basic sled into a mountain ready piece of gear that I will rely on as I head into the deep winter cold.

Nice pulk build. I also built min using the Jet Sled Jr. The only other major difference is that I added a couple of pieces of channel aluminum (1"x1") on the bottom of the sled. Attached to the sled using a button head bolt with the button head on the outside to try and minimize any drag......with a nylon lock nut inside it with the bold flush to the height of the nut so to minimize anything catching too badly on it. These "rudders" keep the sled tracking more solidly on side slopes and helps it track pretty straight behind me. Love seeing others build nice functional equipment. Great job.

I like how you attached the polls to the front. I'll be using the same method to attach it behind my 4-wheeler for trapping.

I think as long as you reinforce it you'll be good with the 4 wheeler...should do what you need.

Nice Job! I was about to shout at the screen "why didn't he put the holes on top" when you answered the question. Can't argue with your logic and those lashing loops turned out great. I made a homemade pulk from an old Flexible Flyer sled. It did not work that well. Got me a Jet Sled now, and I am going to copy your design, pretty much. Thanks so much for sharing. I agree that the harness poles and belt are the trickiest components of the system to get right. Rope stretch sucks. My setup was very similar to yours. I found that my belt tended to pull down on my hips. This year I am looking to add some shoulder straps to prevent that. Cheers!

After pulling mine it worked extremely well. I enjoyed the experience from beginning to end...the build was a fun challenge! There are many much better ropes or lines that could be used inside the harness poles. I might upgrade mine this year. I had no problem however with what I built...it was quite perfect actually! The harness worked great...but you could certainly add the shoulder straps to spread out the load a bit. I think i towed about 75 lbs rather easily, but the trail was a highway. Good luck!

Great job with the build, and good idea putting the holes on the side vs the top. Will be building my pulk sled in the coming days. Thanks for the ideas on my future build.

Glad it was helpful. This year will be my 3rd year with the Pulk. I refine it every year based on my prior lessons. Gotta say, this was pretty solid and didn't need much tweaking!

ooops I watched Part2 first. I wrongly thought the videos from a while ago were part1. I admire how you make it work for you. That molle pull/harness is very cool

I always fuss around with my gear. Sometimes it's over complicated. Sometimes it's simplified. I think this one's just right, where I got a system built to keep organized, but easily accessible too.

How did it pull in the woods, specifically the pole arrangement? Looks like a nice set up.
@outerlimitless

This setup worked great...was super smooth and had good response in turning...I like it overall and might make some very minor tweaks, but the poles, sled, harness...all worked very well!
@williamkeil8414

Excellent job for sure. Most people mount the rope loops on top of the pulk, big mistake.
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 5 лет назад
Thanks! I took quite a while thinking about how to build this. I was definitely concerned with mounting the rope on the top due to the lateral stress it would create. I had an amazing experience pulling this last year and I look forward to getting out there with it again this year!

Only because I don't know. I live in central TX and have no experience with sleds. Why use poles over the rope for pulling?
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 5 лет назад
Basically the main reason to include the poles is because the rope is not rigid. If you don't have poles, then the sled will slide into your heals on downhills or whenever you come to a stop. The poles aid in turning as well...as you turn your hips, the poles pull and push as the same time...helping turn a tighter radius and maintaining control. Did I explain that ok? Hope that helps!!

I been taking gear into the wilderness with a sled for a few years now and i need an upgrade the old one was to narrow and was creaked in many places. I wanted to ask you how does this one pull over brush and rocks?
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 4 года назад
Every sled will struggle with brush and rocks...it depends on your location I guess... I try to avoid heavily rocky trails in general.

So I'm about to bull the trigger on buying this sled. But I'm wondering now that you have used it for awhile do you regret getting the Jr.? Do you wish you had the larger one? I'll be going solo and dont have a ton of gear but wondered your thoughts. Also will the bigger wider one track as good? I snowshoe usually in deep snow not on trails. Would love your thoughts. Thanks!!

I actually have filmed a full sled update that will be coming out in about a week. In essence I prefer the Jr. My update video goes into detail why...and I think you'll find you gain some perspective. If you didn't see it, I had a couple other videos already posted that cover that sled. It's a solid choice. More info soon!!

@@IRAfallon glad to have you aboard! The upcoming video covers an update to my Jr based on thes lessons I've learned along the way. Are you building a pulk? Or using the sled for other purposes?
@IRAfallon
@IRAfallon 4 года назад
@@outerlimitless yeah I'm building a pulk. I love snowshoeing and winter backpacking. I've always just used a backpack but just couldn't get quite enough gear to be really comfortable and my pack was just to heavy. So it wasn't always that fun. I dont know why I never thought of a sled!! Lol. This is going to be a game changer!!
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 4 года назад
@@IRAfallon nice! It really is great. You'll have to select your trails carefully, but the gear selection vastly improves with the sled. My haul is usually 70 lbs roughly in the sled.
