Building Community: Developers in FFXIV vs. WoW

The creativity and community in FFXIV constantly amazes me and is one of the reasons I am so much happier in Eorzea than in Azeroth. Tried something a little more serious today. Let me know your thoughts on how to build a better community in FFXIV and WoW down below!
I think Yoshi-P and his team do a really wonderful job providing different ways for players to co-exist and engage with one another in game regardless of playstyle. WoW on the other hand feels like everything just pushes people toward raiding & dungeons with everything else just there to support it.

Something I have been noticing since I started to play FFXIV, I never see or hear people complaining about balance or if something is overpowered or underpowered. No one seems to care, even the hard core raiders it seems to be more of a matter of the players and community with all content. I cannot remember the last time in the 15 years I gave wow that I enjoyed it as much as FFXIV

Sad thing is WoW used to be like this in regards, Blizzard as a whole. There was a time when in game if you messaged for a GM it would be minutes and they would respond and help you, there was active forum discussion between players and higher ups, there was extensive quality control and polish to their release and then after becoming Activision Blizzard, all that slowly boiled away.

I remember my first Blizzard GM. Very friendly. After they helped me solve an issue with an item I had accidentaly deleted (I was a newbie and the game had been out for only a few months, leave me alone) they asked if I needed help with something else. I asked them if they could show me the 'final boss' of the game. I had Lord Kazzak dropped right on top of my head. Needless to say, my level 7 self perished. And so did most of Stormwind. He proceeded to make jokes in the Trade Chat before signing off. Was an unforgettable experience. Nowdays? Dear lord, calling it 'soulless' is an understatement.

The Blizzard I loved and grew up with ceased to exist a while after the Activision merger. Of course the Blizzard of the early 2000's cared about making a profit, since that is what allowed them to stay open and keep making games. But there seemed to be just as much care about the products. From my own experience in the corporate world, things don't change on day one after an ownership change. They don't want to scare away the talent the subsidiary has. So they change things bit by bit, day by day until every decision is being driven by profit only. The WoW devs who truly cared about the game and the world start hearing "no" a little more often every month. Then one day it really hits them that everything has changed. Then you start seeing some of the older guard start to leave and things rapidly go downhill.

That was really well done. I’ve never even seen that first interview before so I was glad for the extra Yoshi P knowledge. I’ve also noticed that many of the new FFXIV players who recently came over from WoW seem to be the most shocked about things in FFXIV that AREN’T simply raiding or PVP like the Gold Saucer, character housing, and various forms of RP. Having played many other MMOs I still find that shocking because those things exist in all the other games I’ve played. I kind of wonder if I could never get into WoW because perhaps those sorts of things were missing or inadequate but I honestly never got far enough into the game to say despite trying several times to do so. Coming from comparatively newer games like SWTOR, ESO, GW2, PSO2, and FFXIV I just found WoW really hard to get into because there weren’t people around to help or give advice which to me is a staple of the MMO experience as if you’re not going to interact with strangers then it’s not really an MMO but just another online group game with a really boring single player mode…oddly enough, kinda like a Call of Duty game.

Honestly, I feel that I joined FFXIV on the trial some months back and while the story had some slog points in ARR by the time I got to and through HW I was just looking around at all the stuff I had and hadn't done that I just wanted to do so much but was obviously limited by the trial, so about a month or so ago I bought the complete edition on sale and already pre ordered EW and man I have always had something to do, whether it's lvling alt jobs to figure out what I wanna main or opening up trials,raids, or dungeons. Even been working on relic weapons along the way, but at the same time I still find so much casual content like crafting, glamor, housing etc the list goes on, I have my sights set pretty high but I joined a small FC and their teaching me as much as they can, while not all of them aren't looking to do the same stuff I am they are supportive and it's a lot better than the crickets id get from asking any guild I've been in for advice, I look forward to more adventures in Eorzea and beyond

The one thing I love about FFXIV the most is that everyone I've met are humble about what they do. I've never met any elitists who attempt to gate-keep me out of doing content or attending social events, and god knows how much I've experienced that in Overwatch and LoL. In fact, I felt encouraged to clear high-level content like Raids and battlegrounds. Even if I do poorly within my first attempts, no one really flames me or belittles me just because I'm new. That positivity goes a long way for players like me who are veterans in other toxic gaming communities.

@rayhatesu
@rayhatesu 2 года назад
Honestly, most of the hyper-elitism knocked itself out of the community when the Crystal Datacenter opened up, since before the biggest place where elitist arguments happened was within the OG Aether datacenter between people on Balmung (like myself) and people on Gilgamesh. It was a constant cat-and-dog fight because the "hardcore raiders"(note, Sargatanas always had better raiders) and the RPers couldn't see eye to eye, almost a case of the trope "Evil can't comprehend Good"(your take on which was which is as good as anyone's). Once they were split and could only jab at each other out of game, stuff simmered down immensely.

Devs to Community and Community back to Devs. Its a relationship. FF14 is still consistantly building on the relationship while Blizz has already forgotten about how important the relationship is. One builds on your emotion, the other just aims at your wallet.

That's actually really sad for the WoW player base. I really feel for them that their Devs don't seem to give 2 shits about them. I hope they one day get a development team that honestly and earnestly does their best for the community that has stuck with WoW through thick and thin.

It's so normal to accept it over there... they kinda lock you in with making you constantly log in each day just to keep up, so you don't really have time to think about communicating with others or connection and socializing. I've really been trying to let everyone know how different Eorzea is and how much more the developers care about everyone's enjoyment regardless of what you want to do.

It's simple, really. Wow needs to have more non-combat oriented systems. Housing, crafting that actually matters...jumping puzzles, and mini-games that are not these whole complex systems...What makes the Gold Saucer so great in FF14 is that it allows for different levels of investment, you can go hardcore in Triple Triad, majhong, or Chocobo racing, but there are also the casual JACTA, the mini and mega cacpots, and they are all united by the same currency...Unless Wow starts thinking about these activities and build them as a part of the core experience, not mandatory, but core, they won't succeed and will just add yet another system here and there like pet battles that feel just like that, another system.
@Snorlax9
@Snorlax9 2 года назад
Their philosophy: If players are into Golden Saucer thingy, lets copy it and make 3 currencies for each attractions. Make sure they are gonna spending hours to grind for the currencies in order to get entry to the next level currency, and of course players could experience some little RNGs that they can get a bunch of currency which they dont need
@cobra7282
@cobra7282 2 года назад
The issue is that even if WOW had a gold saucer type thing in their game they would likely ruin it with some silly ass system within. Even if their intent wasn't make you feel like you have to grind it they would still end doing that anyways.

@@Professor_Popo The lead WoW game developer never even discussing the concept of community is depressing so I feel like any joke that has even a chance of working would have to be about being disappointed or depressed. The only community building I've seen in WoW is the RP community(which to give credit where due was easier in WoW than FF14 because of official dedicated RP servers), and even that one, while I overall thoroughly enjoyed it and made lots of friends from, was plagued with toxicity. The RP server I played on was home to a bunch of fanatic Sylvanas simps who tried to police everyone else's RP by bullying everyone who's roleplay concepts they didn't agree with out of the RP scene. Worst part was that since they acted like angels on the official forums, the community managers(who never bothered to check up on their ingame behavior) had their back.

Reading your comment actually makes me feel bad for people who wants to RP and get abandoned by their own RP community due to concept conflict. Every MMO has the RP community to be honest so I don't think RP is something special and unique from FF. I hope you find an RP group who accepts who you are and share the same collective mindset. I think 9.2 will be much better for WoW scene and I hope so. Cause I don't want FF to be the top, at least not at the moment. P.s.: regarding the official dedicated RP servers, every Data Center in FF has their own RP servers and they RP all the time I tell you (yup, I'm looking at you Balmung, Crystal, do you know that your whole Data Center has less than 1% TEA ultimate clear, OMG, how is that possible? I've been in servers that had tons of people of all themes, from an entire ishgardian community, to people roleplaying over several month long war campaigns in the bozjan southern front, to more public friendly festivals and performances; its rather nuts what the game allows you to get away with. Every video I watched, every site I visited, every article I read, has always been about systems, stats, metrics. And I always thought mmos were all about these things until I started ffxiv. Wow not only has been keeping its players in a bubble of dillusion all these years but it has also given the same dillusion to all potential mmo players. I can't imagine the number of people who never tried an mmo just because they had the wrong idea about them. Ffxiv's explosion hopefully will bring even more thousands of people to the amazing experience that an mmo can be. Thank you for letting this be known to all of your viewers. 👍

We were worried, because despite the state of the broken game, we saw the potential for a great game and were playing it, despite how broken it was up to that live letter. We were completely shocked when, instead, he said that they would keep 1.0 running with one team, while the rest worked on 2.0 aka ARR. Those were the best 2 yrs of our gaming lives. All my years playing MMOs... I started with Runescape in middle school and got divulged into WoW and then Celtic Heroes after high school then Avabel ONLINE, SWTOR in 2013. ArcheAge, Blade & Soul, Black Desert Online. In 2017, I met someone very important to me who gifted me a trial week in FFXIV. One week and I saw a massive difference in community. Everyone was just *there*, having fun, hanging out, making their own communities within a world. I've never seen, aside from the SoulsBorne community, a more positive playerbase and devteam than what exists today in FFXIV. When Asmon began playing XIV, getting Dark Knight I was in tears watching the greeting everyone gave. Lining up just for one person, you don't see that very often. It's too special of a community. I'm a very heavy PvPer, and I'm anticipating the day Asmon goes in because I know for a fact, if anyone will listen to advice or feedback on anything it'll be YoshiP. We praise this man for being so humble and so into his own game, it's incredible how many people he touches in these interviews. Just an edited note here: I wasn't even interested in the MSQ when I discovered pvp during my 7 day trial. I met my mentor who became one of my best friends, we ran Palace of the Dead as a duo, ran it as a team, challenged each other to be better duelists. Players across XIV never give me problems about not doing story because I practically live on Wolves' Den Pier. Instead they duel me, sometimes I give advice or they give advice, and we grow.

I'm one of those players who, although I do spend time leveling up and challenging myself, spends time just exploring the world for the scenery and vistas - to smell the virtual roses, as it were. As someone who really hasn't played MMOs for several years prior to getting into FF14 just a couple of months ago, I am absolutely floored by how respectful the FF community's been. Even when I've flubbed a Duty every now and then, I never felt like I was being attacked for screwing up, making an honest mistake, or finding myself overwhelmed by the creatures I drew too many of to myself. I personally haven't played WoW, so I cannot compare direct experiences... but from what I've learned, it sounds like FF14 has set my expectations for future MMOs really high.

i have worked among many a company in my years at the work force. some going on for 20-30 years strong, and have no signs of stopping. some that had potential, but failed years later after 10 or so years of a honeymoon phase. there are a number of factors that lead to the latter case, but per this video's focus, the lack of a sense of community is one of them. not just between client and businesses, but also internally among departments and the hierarchy. and we know now, Blizzards' workplace is total mess. and this is rather reflective of the developers mindset in refusing to mingle and build a community with their players, rather instead to hardheadedly push what they think is right. WoW has enjoyed it's honeymoon phase, which ended years ago if former players are to go by. and they're now on a slow descent. it's simply a matter of time till they truly crash down. they still have a chance to revert course, but they need to do a lot more than simply give vapid lip service and empty promises, all for appearance sake.

And then people wonder why so many leave WOW for FF. People don't want to just get more power. People want to play these games to interact with other people. Sometimes in their own way. I have an extreme sense of Anxiety whenever I'm in a large crowd and I love small groups of people. I feel comfort when I'm in a small group, but that's me. I still feel good when I'm with someone else. Not necessary doing something together, sometimes just sitting there in town, talking, or not doing anything. Just being there. And FF gives me chance to feel that. Or to lost in a large crowd. Or go and fight alongside with someone. It's a complex thing but still, I feel it. It's fun. And I want to have more fun. I don't want to just be best raider. I did Savage raids, I did Extreme fights, they are fun, but I love having options. I love to love the game.

I remember in the old days, there was a bit about a WoW player having passed away, her friends and guild arranged for a lovely in-game funeral cause she loved the game and had so many friends on there. It was on a PVP Server and the rival faction was allowed to make an appearance to pay respects... You knew what was coming, I knew, and somehow they didn't! They actually announced the funerals location and time in a Hostile Zone! SO 1 player on the rival faction came, and fed information to his group as a sizable raid crashed the funeral, killed almost all the attendees and even killed the Dead Persons avatar. Classic WoW antics...

The worst part about that story... is this is the kind of behavior that that game and that community endorses. It's such an enormously dysfunctional hellscape that treating people like trash is the norm, it's a societal standard there. So much so that it they take it out of the game as well and treat their friends that way. For example I had a friend that didn't agree with me that the WoW token was basically RMT and they started hurling all kinds of insults at me despite me never once insulting them and then acted like I was in the wrong to take offense to that kind of behavior. They actually think people who are not toxic pieces of shit to each other are toxic, the whole thing is flipped. And then when all their friends quit the game, they wonder why they are alone.

I don't recall where I read it, but an article asked the question: Would WoW benefit from a reboot? And the fact of the matter, I think that may be the only way it could survive going forward. It has lost so much respect and fanbase, and more with each new expansion, that it's a matter of time before something more extreme would need to be done to save the product. A reboot would give Blizzard/Activision a chance to really figure out the best way to cater to their players rather than expect the players to continue catering to the developers. I don't imagine they would seize that opportunity, if i'm being honest.

It's late to start copying xiv if anyone was wow. All these side contents and mini games have existed in xiv long before it became phenomenal. This is something I'm happy that xiv devs have done. It shows their character and dedication to the FF legacy. If wow ever started copying xiv, it would end up being a comparison. By the looks of it the wow devs have some sort of problem with their ego and pride. They can't even step down to really listen to their players and would tend to stick to what they want wow to be. It's a bias they have developed thickly through the years.

He's just doing what he thinks the people on top wants him to do, he doesn't consider or think about the players. Yoshi-P and his team is now where Blizzard was back in 2004 when WoW was released. This shows in the overall quality of the game, as well as in the players within the game. WoW is more or less condensed down the the DPS meter, 98% of the game is played through that little window. Wow and Blizzard are doing their best to damage control their game and earn as much $$$$ before their days are over. As WOW bleeds players day by day they just seem to fuck up more and more and I really can't see WoW being around for much longer at this rate. @Maria_Erias
@Maria_Erias 2 года назад
I agree. I've been a fan of Warcraft since Warcraft II. I remember Blizzard's early mantra with regards to their games of "We'll release it when it's ready." I rode the highs of launch through vanilla, BC, and the peak of Wrath. Then they started the systemic changes in Cata and began to "dumb down" the game for "broader audience appeal", which continued even more into MoP with ability pruning and class homogenization and I was out of there. I came back in 7.2 in Legion and fell in love with it all over again, but BfA shook me and I was done a month into Shadowlands once the curtain was pulled off the rusty, creaky guts of the unending treadmill of chores that was considered "content". After the recent lawsuits came out and Blizzard promised a "change", I got hopeful. But it looks like the changes they're implementing have nothing to do with making a better game. Turning portraits of women into fruit. Removing jokes and flirt voice lines. Removing the /spit emote. Really, Blizzard? Your game is a flaming dumpster fire and your company is falling apart around your ears, and these are the changes that you deem critically important to renew your fans' faith in you? Then datamining of the recent 9.2 patch has come out showing that the core "fun" "lore" feature of the patch is not only time gating, but time gated to the point where it would take months to unlock it all. And that's not even months of content - it's just weeks of sitting around, waiting for a timer to finish rolling over. They have truly lost their way. The people at that company are standing on the shoulders of giants, and instead of learning lessons from the good and bad both, they're ignoring the good and simply trying to whitewash the bad.

Bigger doesn't mean better. In fact one could argue that's one of the reasons it's floundering. It has all these players but is unable to sustain or make them happy any longer. As for the addon and tracking things, that is also part of WoW's ongoing (non-Company related) problems and why Yoshi doesn't want them in XIV. They do nothing but breed contempt and force players to only play so their numbers get bigger. Nothing else matters. Sure people will say "I only run DPS meters for myself so I can see where I need improvement." but that's a bold faced lie 99.9% of the time. People use the meters so they know who to target for kicking and ridiculing.

The difference between WoW and XIV in a main philosophy. WoW wants you to play wow and keep playing wow and only wow so they can get your sub and buy stuff from the cash shop. You are a customer to them, not a player. XIV says its fine if you take a break, they WANT you to do what you enjoy, so that they hope that XIV is something you enjoy when you do it. WoW believes everything in the game needs to be required to be done, that everyone needs to do everything to be satisfied so WoW fights with their veteran and newbie fanbase since they cant add hardcore content without wanting it to be required and they cant add casual content without wanting it to be required. in XIV the only thing that is required is the main story quest, everything else is optional. So they simply add what people want. Do you want to get into housing and interior design? its there Do you want to get into fashion design and glamour? Its there do you simply want to kick back and play minigames? its there do you wanna progress the some of the hardest content in the game? its there! ITS ALL THERE because it is optional.

I mean, I always preferred JRPGS because I like the visuals, the bright and effects of magics and etc, I don't feel western rpgs too much amused because the lack of these stuff I'm so used to, still played some tho, but I think they are not my favorite taste. I don't know if I can make my point clear, I think it is something cultural and the tastes between then are very different, however once again it is my opinion of it. Even Yoshida think it is wrong this fight, but for other reasons. When I watch these videos of yours, I felt different about this FFXIV x WoW thing you do, I feel they are valid because you are expressing your feelings towards Blizzard as an ex-player of World of Warcraft. I think you are not making these videos because you hate wow due to some game rivalry people put on this, but I think you are sad about WoW situation, I feel you make these videos because you want your home back, you want your Azeroth back, not only you, but a lot of wow refugee want WoW like he was years ago I guess. I never played WoW and me saying one word about this game would be invalid, for example I don't know why people are so mad with 9.2 patch I hope you are enjoying Final Fantasy XIV and I also hope WoW can be that amazing game again for you and all the refugees

Very right here... I am incredibly sad about the state of WoW and Blizzard as a company. With everything going on there, I feel disrespected as a customer and player, and I wish they would just listen to their players because we love Azeroth and the Warcraft universe... but at every turn for many years now I feel like they've been pushing us away. The horrific revelations from the lawsuits recently was literally the "straw that broke the camel's back" for me. I can never look at that company the same way again... but I'm happy to be able to make Eorzea my new home. I'm very happy here.
