In this video I will be building a custom metal fuel tank. I will be using my miller matic 252 mig welder. I will be using a circle burner to cut the fill and pump holes. I will also be air testing it after it is completely built.

A little tip for welding around threads when you have a torch available, just turn your torch on using only acetylene on low and and hit the thread with the black smoke, the carbon prevents weld spatter from sticking.

Just a screw a nipple in the threads

This project was a good example of a good plan and working the plan. Liked the air testing sure beats filling with fuel and finding a spot weeping fuel.

Great job Sir. This job brought back some real old memories! From fabricating 220 bbl oil storage tanks in high school OJT to welding similar tanks like your building to hold hydraulic oil for accumulators to operate BOP’s for the oil field. If my memory serves me right we’d use 5 psi to pressure test. Thanks for sharing this. Oh, man that circle burner looks great along with a clean tip made for great fit on those collars

Ever since watching your first video talking about the standards you hold yourself to and quality of work-striving to make better welds each time, I try to get better and make each weld the best that I can. Thanks!

Pretty cool. I build big tanks for standby gen-sets. We're talkin from 200 gallons up to 8000 gallons for CAT, Cummins, Generac, and a few others. Mostly duel wall tanks and a few single walls. EDIT also, Austin, if you build another tank of some sort, I'd be glad to talk with you and share info.

Nice work, Austin. I'm glad you checked on the test pressure. I know from experience that it doesn't take a lot to blow up a tank. Apparently, 15 PSI will do the trick.
@2nickles647
@2nickles647 6 месяцев назад
Yes sir. You canculate the lxwxh and get the total area. You want to add 5 psi and recalculate. You will find how much actual pressure is in the tank. You will be surprised how much.

Used to make hydraulic and fuel tanks using very similar methods, I would use a clamshell type of bend where only 3 sides on each side needed welding. The flat bar on top is a nice feature.

when I'm doing full round mig welds I'll tuck the gun conduit between my legs or pinch it up against the bench with my thigh-that frees up the two or three feet of conduit so it's not dragging on the edge of my workpiece.Also I do a dry run before sparking up

When I worked as a tank welder,we always tested our tanks & vessels with air & soapy water; or " hydrostatic ". So we had to have our steel as clean as possible, our company also did sandblasting & painting/ coatings , so we always had an industrial air compressor in the yard.When I was learning tank welding, collars & couplings had female threads & nipples & swedges have male threads.and back then the mig welder had just been invented & so we didn't have one,most of our tanks & vessels were stick welded with 6011& 7018 rods.

Most of my career I have done fixture welding and you were just talking about where your Mig lead Falls how I have mitigated problem when it's a problem is I will put the whip over my shoulder so that it's straight in line with what I'm doing and this also keeps it from being kinked because you know right where it's at it doesn't work for everything but when you're in a tight space it has always worked good for me

I like the torch circle cutting jig, although I am curious why you go with a torch instead of a plasma cutter. Consumables for plasma cutters are so much more less expensive than gas.

Be careful using air to leak test, because it's compressed it could explode.

Nice job, not sure what the limit is, but anything high pressure always test with water, never air.. If goes tits up with air your gonna know about it. With high pressure water failure it's much safer.. Low pressure as you done sure be ok.. 😊

Question wouldn't a tig weld be more in the class of a prettier weld as you said for the top, with no sanding or grinding. Just asking not meant as negative feed.

For me with mig, I have to wear ear protection. The sound drives me nuts. I can hear it just enough to tell if I’m having a problem with the surface of the material otherwise than that, don’t need to have it blasting in my ear.

Austin, what pressures are you running on your oxygen and acetylene? What size tip did you have in your torch? My cuts don't come out near as clean as yours running a size 00 tip (for stuff 1/4" or less) and my acetylene set at 4-5 psi and oxygen around 35-40psi.

Yeah hydro for sure, but this is more of a leak test. No way in hell I would be using a ball valve, at least have a leak test gauge with a schrader valve and a safety blow off. But I like all my arms and legs.

@ardennielsen3761

the pipe that the pump attaches to to pull fuel from the bottom of the tank sometimes falls off as the fuel slowly burns the tape off the threads... loose then falls off, oil and gas resistant Permatex works better. ?stoichiometric flash point pressure of vapor in tank? weird how fuel burning in a tank lets out a lot of air then seems like it quit only to then continue burning letting out more burnt air, like its breathing stops and starts... but i guess 3/16 7018 on 1/8 wall tanks is confusing, very large surface aria coverage just pulling it away like spray arc on a mig. different surface finish. bigger rods make sealing easier

3/16" plate for a fuel tank ? a little heavy ? The thickest I made was a 40 imp.gallon tank was 10 gauge . with 2 baffles it was over 200 lbs . a sheet of 10gauge 4X8 sheet is about 200 lbs . I stick welded it back stepping the weld (weld towards your last weld ). The baffles stitched welded
