The filling around the building wall should be sloped outwards to prevent water from settling there. Also consider planting grass to absorb water around wall. The water proof chemical should also be used for plastering.

Hey Sis! Thank you for sharing this very valuable lesson. The masons also did a great job with treating and re-plastering the fence wall. I am glad that you were able to treat the problem. I am sure that any plants that you add in the future will help to absorb some of the water coming up from the ground and block direct water contact with the wall when it rains. Again, thank you Sis for this valuable lesson shared with us. Continued success to you! 👍🏾🌼

Also, be sure to try and get some vegetation (plants, grass/sod) near the areas near the house and wall. This could also help absorb any overflow from rain fall . I've had to show grass seeds around my home to prevent puddling of water and the muddiness as an end result on the walk way of my home after it rains.

One of the best methods of preventing water dampness AFTER CONSTRUCTION is injecting waterproofing membrane to the damp proof layer/course of the wall. Holes are first drilled into the lower section of the wall then a special injection equipment containing the waterproof membrane is injected into the crevices of the wall to form a membrane.
@jennifermcleod3802
@jennifermcleod3802 2 года назад
Greetings Joe, I thought you had to damp proofing membrane at foundation level. Is this what happens when there is membrane laid?
@joemensah9557
@joemensah9557 2 года назад
@@jennifermcleod3802 hello Jennifer, it is also very good practice to waterproof the foundation and prevent dampness caused by GROUND WATER. Basically dampness is comes from two water sources, 1) is ground water and 2) rainwater. Ground water can be prevented by waterproofing the foundations I.e by applying waterproofing paint bitumen or polythene sheet for the foundations. This method is commonly used in basement construction and for foundations in waterlog areas to prevent raising damp. The second source of dampness is rainwater splashing onto the exterior walls . This usually happened when your outside yard have been concreted over. so when it rains it splashes onto the exterior house wall , from the floor, causing dampness on the base of the wall, and overtime causes dampness . To prevent this , the polythene sheets used in the foundations should also be extended into the external house walls, about 150mm above the finish outside ground level . This is known as the damp proof course These should prevent dampness. But if you live in a heavily water logged area , you should consider installing ‘French drains pipes’ close to and around the house to collect raising ground water and channel the water to a gutter.

Thanks for sharing and hopefully saving those of us coming behind money and headache, AshantiQueen. The gate has totally transformed the space. Looks really good how the whole yard is looking now. Question: does the entire wall need to be plastered with the RMV mixed mortar? Or can it be applied to a lower section of the wall only?
@AshantiQueen

Eric Anku: Thank you for the complement. I entire fence wall was plastered. However, only the lower section of the main building was treated and plastered.

You Ghanaians are very funny. A house is not something to be constructed like a toy or doll house. The project must be inspected at every crucial stage. Why is damp proof course (dpc) inspection not mandatory in Ghana? And then you talk about "all houses in Ghana have this problem" ! Goodness gracious! How can someone spend thousands of dollars on a house without following proper building procedures. Ladies (& gentlemen), always have a QUALIFIED architect supervising your construction instead of leaving it in the hands of a foreman and indisciplined workers. Stop cutting corners to save money. The following stages of construction must be inspected by a qualified inspector. 1. Foundation (excavations) 2. Damp proof course and membranes - (dpc) / (dpm) 3. Drains - before they are covered 4.External wall before plastering 5. Roof structure 6. After completion of the building. A building should never be occupied before it passes all inspections.

@@AshantiQueen its not about which country I'm from. It's about we Africans learning from one another. Don't always look for commenters who only say good things or compliment and praise you without pointing out your mistakes. A mistake pointed out is an opportunity for someone else to learn what should be done to avoid the problem. Water dampness exists in some US homes (and tends to be in houses with basement foundations) but it's never overlooked during construction. Need to make sure a damp proof course membrane is placed during the foundation level at the top of the substructure to avoid rising damp. Use roof guttering to prevent penetrating damp. Ensure the plot has good drainage and appropriate sloping

Sorry to see this happening to your beautiful house,my only advice after all the repairs you did is please channel all the rain water from the building property,I don’t see any rain gutters and it’s drain pipes,well when it starts to rain observe the water flow around the house,if you don’t have rain gutters please erect them to help proper drainage, thanks.

Unfortunately some of the buildings are being put up by people with little or no knowledge and experience in construction. There are key steps to be taken at each stage, including damp proof membrane and introducing of waterproof chemicals to the mortar for the block laying a the foundation level to help control any form of damp rise. Others are also driven by cost saving so do not see the need in spending the money on waterproof treatment and this comes back to bite them hard in the very near future when they move in their property. We have produce a very detailed video on our channel which show the process involved in damp proof treatment.
