We used wonder board over sheet rock or in place of sheet rock . It's been over 30 yrs so not fresh in mind which but was to prevent h20 damage behind tile. I have heard great things about this sluther product so hopefully in the long run it will pay off for you.
After watching you do this Schluter system I can say I'd never use it, I remodeled both our bathrooms 15 years ago with just cement backer board and tile, worked great, tore out one bathroom last month to remodel again and had ZERO water damage anywhere behind the tile in a shower that had 3 people using it everyday for the last 15 years.
Totally agree with you. My own personal showers are both done this way. It's fine and will last for a long time. If you really want to make it bomb proof then use Hardie or durock and then apply Mapei or redguard sealant. It'll last longer than the house probably will.
Kerdi is kinda a PITA the first time you do it. Definitely a learning curve. After you have done is once, the subsequent times are waaay easier and faster. I have gotten pretty good at it. Plus now, I use the Kerdi board instead of the membrane over drywall. It’s even faster.
I've done hundreds (thousands?) of tile jobs over 50 years.....Schluter is super expensive and not even necessary. Just use cement board and fiberglass tape over the joints, around the faucet/shower head, and screws with TILE ADHESIVE (like mud over drywall tape), and set the tile. Caulk the joints (corners and along tub) after the tile is set (and BEFORE grouting)letting it set up for a day. DO NOT use pure silicone, but tub and tile caulking, seal the grout after a few days and you're done.
They refuse to listen. People have been telling them to do that for 2 years and they put regular drywall in and to this day refuse to correct it. They're making it way harder than they need to. Hopefully they dont take long hot showers. It's not the wall getting wet as much as its the humidity of the room. He originally did not put cement board because he was worried about the distance between studs thinking that somehow cement board would not hold.
The pure bliss you will feel when you have your first bath, or your first hot shower! It's been a long time coming, but you have created an absolutely stunning home and family and it's been a pleasure to watch!! Thank you!!! 💖💖💖
Looking like the bathroom shower and tub waterproofing is being a challenge. Spencer will conquer this project as has done with everything else and the tiling will be easier. The bathrooms after it is all tiled and sealed and stuff will look great!! Can't wait for your next video, which are well done!! You all take care and be safe.
My week is not complete till I see how you all are doing. Got worried not seeing you all and glad all is alright and your doing a great job Spencer and the help you get from Kenzie is great and love seeing those babies.
@John Freeman “they could pay and have it all finished” LOL you clearly must be new cause the whole point of this channel was to document themselves BUILDING their house. You clearly have never built a house by yourself with no experience (sound familiar? Oh yeah, that’s Kenz and Spencer to a T) bye stfu and don’t watch if you’re gonna spread hate, you’re doing nothing but contributing to their paycheck. Nobody cares what you have to say kick rocks.
Glad you're finally getting the bathrooms done, but seriously, it would have been one of the very first things I completed! AND doing through 2 pregnancies, and 2 children - this woman is a SAINT, Lol!❤😇
The editing of the videos is of such good quality! Keep up the good work Ken's. Until the next video, and I am sure that Spencer will have about completed the bathroom. Man this guy is so detail oriented. Absolutely amazing work Spencer throughout this entire build. I believe that this channel is so deserving of each and every subscriber that it has and probably deserves a Million more.
It hasn't been the same without you, I am so glad that you are back. your little princess is a real Character and so sweet and your little prince is cute and i love his smile, Spenser you have done an excellent job of every challenge. So the first attempt with a bigger piece wasn't successful but we all come across these problems, Mackenzie You are a brilliant mother and you are so lucky to have 2 adorable chidren,
Can't believe y'all are almost in the home stretch. I'm excited to see what tiles y'all selected and paint colors for the bathrooms. Spencer you rock and are doing a great job.
How time flies. Been watching since the foundation posts were poured. It seems like forever ago, but your journey has been an inspiration and gives me hope that one day I can live out my childhood dream of living off grid in the middle of nowhere. 🤣🤣
Celebration is not far away. You guys have worked yourselves to the bone getting this home family ready. These babies have been with you from start to finish, giving them a forever home is wonderful. So happy to see you, I kept looking for you. This is my #1 show to watch, I’m 76 and watching you young people gives me a sadness that we never tried any of this when we first married. You’ve built a special home. I hope you don’t mind but I’ve kinda adopted the 4 of you as family. See ya next time !!!!
Glad to see another video, the waiting is torture I hope y’all working on another project? Cause I know I’m not the only one that love’s y’all your just an amazing family .and Spencer needs his own company for real I’ve never seen anyone with such talent.
Personally, I'm not too worried, I think they're as much addicted to this work after achieving such master level of excellence, as we are to being their fans!
Great to see you back. What you have achieved is so impressive & juggling all of the work whilst raising two little ones is admirable. Your home is coming along beautifully. Look forward to your next post x
So glad to see a new post. Evidently I’m not the only one missing you guys. I agree Kenzie is swamped with the kids and the filming. Glad all is well and you are doing good!
Glad to see y’all back. By the looks of it we have all been worried about y’all. I’ve been watching and now I’m asking are y’all only doing one video every 2 weeks. We all miss y’all. Love all that y’all do. Thank you for sharing your time with us.
I think anyone that has been a parent of two little ones, will attest to the work that it requires, -never mind having to care for them in a literal construction zone. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn that Kenzie has decided with beginning of a new year to drop back on her postings. I’m certain Spencer would agree with how much they both are working. I believe I can say that while the news would be devastating to us all, our love for them both would understand! We may need to prepare ourselves with the idea that they’ll post as often as they are able. Perhaps as the kids get a little older we will enjoy a little more of our “fix” of the beautiful family. 💖💖💖💖
Once the house is done, Spencer probably will need to return to work. It was a blessing to make an incredible living while working on the house, but that can’t last.
RU-vid pays for all of it. Our support pays for all of it. Similar channels with more kids and more animals upload at least weekly. They’re going to learn quickly that the youtube money dries up quick if you don’t bring the consistent content, and a lot of stress comes with that income loss.
There is still a lot to be done. If they decide to share the next steps that's wonderful. If they decide not to well that's good too. I'm very glad I was able to see this part of their journey. Blessings on everyone in these complex times. 🌱🎆🍁❄
It feels like there's a lot of projecting of feelings going on here in this thread... Have y'all considered that they've ALWAYS been doing YT AND kids ! It's just how life is for them. For you, life is different. I, for one, am going to look on the bright side. My glass is half full. 🥛
I call them "working words" instead of cuss words. LOL. Love your videos, the videography is beautiful, love seeing those littles, Beau is so cute with her wide eyed wonder about everything. Enjoy every minute you can, they grow SO very fast. Pace yourself. We can get along with a video every couple of weeks, your family life comes first. We will be here waiting.
Watching you two has taught me to be patient with my projects! I was inspired and redid 2 rooms from floor to ceiling. Next- I am tackling the kitchen!
So glad to see you all back and thriving. Beau sure is a daddies girl, so sweet. That sweet little guy on the floor is going to be walking before we know it. The grow so fast. I always wondered how many days in these vlogs. So out of curiosity (and too much time on hands) I counted Spenser’s shirts. A total of nine in this one. I love the shots of your night sky, here in Phoenix at night you just don’t see many because of all the light pollution. I miss the stars and especially the Milky Way. Be safe and see ya’ll soon.
I just wanted to let you all know that I have watched many container home video's but I really love yours the best ! I have been watching you and your growing family from the start . I envy you all very much ! Please take care and be safe ! Love you all Keith !
Boy! This one took a minute! Glad you’re back, most of all, glad you’re all well. I understand it cannot be easy to keep these videos going, content and the kids, nonetheless, great job! Looking forward to the tile! God bless! 😃✌🏼
Wow! Spencer you are amazing. Your patience and perseverance during times, when I’m sure you wanna rip your hair out, you get the job done and you do it well or you do it over and you do it even better. Much love to you guys your home is amazing. Bo is just chattering up a storm that’s all gonna turn into real language real soon. And baby boy is getting so strong lifting himself up. Thank you for sharing your beautiful family.🍏💕
Yay, another video! I love the shots of the night sky and the shot through the wind chime. I hope when your home is all finished that you find miscellaneous projects (even trying new recipes) because your followers (including me) will go through withdrawals! I am looking forward to seeing the bathrooms in final form. A big hug to you and your children :).
Good to see you guys back again! It’s coming along nicely! As a carpenter/renovator I’m impressed with how you have done so much and with fairly good proficiency. I was wondering though how come you didn’t continue the Kerdi membrane over the inside corners? Now you just have an exposed inside corner, which is the most likely point for leaks to occur. Maybe I missed something. You guys are doing amazing, my Wife and I love watching your progress and look forward to the next video. Stay Safe!
Spencer, it is SUCH A JOY to watch someone with your commitment to quality, safety and optimal functioning in EVERYTHING you build and make. This is so rare in the modern world, and I love to see it. I'm a quilter and just had to take apart a whole baby quilt and redo it this past week ~ wasn't right; didn't wanna fudge it. Now it is remade and beautiful for the brand new person who will receive it. 🙂 Sending love to you all ~ and Kenz, I HOPE you will continue on into filmmaking; you have created SUCH beautiful, beautiful work for us all; thank you for sharing your lives with us.
I lived in very cold places in and out of the US. I refuse to shower outside in cold weather. Stay warm guys. Spencer, you are doing an excellent jobs as usual!!!
Hey, greets from germany. Some input from my point of view: we use special treated drywall for wet rooms. then we apply a coating that controls the suction of the dry wall, then start with schluter. been thru most of your pain in one or the other way. your doing great and have good thoughts on the mayor issues, keep it up. 👍
Hi Guys, you two are such an inspiration .and working so hard to have things your way. I AM so sure it will take along time to post that video of when the inside shower is operational . That I'm sure will be an exciting day .week. month, no cold ,storm, snakes lol 😉 stay safe and happy. 🇨🇦Craig
I give you props for using the Schluter system and while it may be no better or worse than any other waterproofing system, I convinced that Redgard or Mapei's waterproofing membrane is the way to go. Not only is it cheaper, (way cheaper) it doesn't have that many steps. Roll or brush it on like paint two coats is best, use the manufacturer seam tape for when two different surface angles meet and you're ready to tile. Plus it can go on sheetrock whether green/purple board (mold protection), white, cement board/hardie backer and you don't have to worry about wetting the surface first prior to laying down thinset as thinset or any type of custom or non custom mortar sucks up the moisture. No worry of rushing and seeing thinset dry.... Have all the time in the world to cut your tile and place them where need be.
Ok, you two! Looking good, getting there! Looks like we need to talk new projects for the channel! How 'bout a workshop, or barn refirb? Also, congrats for getting within earshot of 200M views!!! incredible job, not only on your home, but also on your work on the channel!
Priorities are set in life, and being a parent clearly requires attending to that top priority. Vlogs will be made when they can be made. Stay safe and happy. Blessings❤.
Awww, after scrolling through a lot of these comments, I can see I’m not the only one who worried and cares about you guys, thanks for updating us and posting a new video! Your content is so admirable, wholesome and touching. Spencer, you’re doing an amazing job and you even handle the hiccups well! I bet if you ever make a mistake or feel low, all you have to do is take a step back or even look at the walls because everything exists because of what you learned and the hard work you both put in! Seriously, congratulations you guys, even if the journey is coming to an end for us viewers, your journey is really just beginning with your beautiful home and family! Thank you for such a beautiful look into the process and what you’ve taught us all through your own trials. I look forward to your posts, as a lot of followers do, and the sky is the limit for you. I think it’s also safe to say if you ever have future projects, house or non-house related, you’ll have support from your RU-vid community no doubt! God bless!
Oh wow, I have checked your channel 2 or 3 times a day to see if you had posted anything. I was so worried that something was wrong because you had not posted in so long. I am so happy to see that everything is ok and you are all doing well. Spencer you have done just an amazing job through this whole build. You have had to learn as you go, so if you run into a little trouble, even though it is frustrating look at all you have accomplished. Once again I will say Spencer you have done a wonderful job!!!!!!!
Your children are adorable! Please keep filming after you are done with the house. Mckenzie you are braver than I am with 30 degree showers. I am so excited for you to be done with your home.
Happy to see you guys, we all miss you and hoping all is well with you and family. Spencer I know you are trying to get everything done but why not finish one of the bathroom completely so you'll have to use while you work on the other. Good luck my dear.
Glad to see all is well with y'all! Your content is so awesome, it's always great when you upload your progress. Spenser you are amazing, don't be too hard on yourself! Everything is coming together beautifully! 🥰💕🤗🙂
I've been with you guys from almost the very beginning. It's hard to believe how much time slips by with all the projects, it's you two building and us watching. I am trying my hardest to build my daughter an RV so she can go to school in it vs rent an apartment. It's super hard when I have several health problems, one being eds which is a severe case of it and my life is likely going to end soon, but I won't give up on getting her rv built, I'll build it one foot in the grave...
I never thought when I 1st started watching your videos. I would be so invested in watching you guys progress. Your guys are an inspiration even when things are not going right. Blessings to you all ✊
It’s looking great Spencer I remember my 1st. Bathroom renovation and the mistakes I made it’s all a Learning situation and you guys will enjoy this time when you look back over the years. Keep it going love watching your family grow and love the Videos
Always too short! Love that you're almost ready to have a shower inside!! That's so great! Not sure what we'd do without you guys, when it's more than 7 days, I'm having withdrawals, wanting to see what you're up to in the house! LOL! Have a good weekend, thanks for the video. The kids are so cute, love hearing Beau trying to talk. (from Sandi)
Speaking for most of us, two weeks between videos is too long! But, we're all glad to see you are well, and still making progress on the bathrooms. I noticed that your vines are growing over your windows, and that's not good. Keep your vines off the window frames because they will cause a multitude of problems. Trust me I'm a professional.
I recently went old school, durock to studs then mortar and tape all the seams and screw holes then aqua guard it, worked like a charm........much simpler than the sluter setup and MUCH cheaper
You are doing a great job under a very stressful situation with a new baby and toddler. Don’t be so hard on yourself. If you need help on some things, get the help and don’t feel bad about it. Love your family
As a parent I know kids are the biggest thing in the life of young parents. Im really happy to see you guys find an excellent balance in your videos between the kids and the original content! Often kids take over young RU-vidr's videos, which make the videos not about the original subject anymore . It make me stop watching it. ! Not in this case, really well done!
I would have done the one piece shower and tub. Amazing job anyway. I am curious what the content will be once the house is done. You might want to start advertising that. Coming soon! Cooking? Cleaning? Car repair? Lawn care?...
I hope after the 2 bath rooms are finished we will get to see the babies room! Love ur channel & go back to re-watch each one over several times! Keep up all the great things you r doing!!
I just can’t figure out why a working shower/bath wasn’t done very early on instead of one of the very last things to be done. Glad you’re getting to it now though & I’m sure y’all are so you won’t have to shower in below freezing weather
It's so awesome to see y'all finally getting to work on the bathrooms before winter comes. Spencer you have persevered through so much!! Mackenzie is a lucky woman for sure! I'm sure it is exciting and exhausting at the same time. Nice that you get a little comic relief with the little ones around :) Hats off to you Spencer for all your hard work and I'm looking forward to seeing how the tile looks in the bathrooms. May many blessings keep coming y'all's way :)
Oh you’re not supposed to use drywall as a shower. You’re supposed to use cement board then you can put tile directly on the cement board and all looks pretty. Mainly because cement board doesn’t absorb the moisture off of the stuff you’re putting on the wall and the plaster in sheet rock wall does absorb water. Sorry about that but I thought you guys knew it
The time honored education of “learning from your mistakes.” The main thing is to keep plowing forward and as Winston Churchill said, “Never give up!” You sir continue to be a good example of this, based on the excellent results of your home! Stay the course, mon! 👍
Hey Guys, Glad to see that you're back..! I'm learning as much as I can and enjoying that your family is our family too..! Thanks for taking the time to do videos when you can on building your awesome home.. step by step .! Thanks and Stay Safe..!
Spencer, you made me SO glad that when I rebuilt two main bathrooms that I used tub surrounds. A lot less work. And Kenzie, I can't imagine how difficult it must be to wash that gorgeous long hair, especially in the cold outside. When you finally get your indoor shower you are going to be one happy camper.
Why 2 weeks between vids now? Used to be one week. Miss you! You guys are still my favorite channel! Your children are getting so big so fast! Can't wait to see what tile you pick for the showers! Love the outdoor shots of the cows and the scenery around your home.
So glad to see you. Was worried about you all. Really miss seeing your videos and was hoping everything was.ok. Good luck Spencer on getting the bathrooms finished.
Yay!!! So happy to see y’all again! Have been with you almost from the start and miss you at times but we all understand that you guys have a lot on your plates. So it’s lovely to have a peek again 😊
Your children are lucky you are making a lovely, comfortable, warm and safe home for them; I’m hoping your dogs aren’t still living outside and under your house.
It won't be long now. I'm so excited for you to take your first shower/bath inside. Kensey you are so patient. You guys are awesome. I love how you support one another. Your journey is a beautiful thing to watch. What a blessing.
Last video I was confused. This video I’m still scratching my head. I’ve built a house so I know about delays, but why was trim around the windows done before indoor showering? Was it product delay?
God Bless you and your Family. This is amazing. What a Love Story. The Strength of God is like No Other. Love and Respect. This Young couple with no experience need positive attitudes from watchers. They had to learn as they went along. We all know lessons can be hard. It is trial and error. The have had to work around the Weather, Quality of Products, waiting for Drying times on paints, caulk, etc. The worked projects around a sleeping child. Thats hard enough. The Hardship of not having the comforts of home as we know it. They also needed rest and when your exhausted it becomes harder with all aspects of moving forward. I have Great Respect for this couple. Keeping God as your Rock in Life will help you have the Strength and Happiness to Live your Life in His Grand Plan for you. You are Blessed.
McKenzie and Spencer you guys are amazing . Spencer such a perfectionist and he works so hard and never gives up . McKenzie you are always there to encourage him. The bathrooms look so professional . Well done you guys ... Great job !
I have watched u 2 since the beginning, but never comment. I just wanted to say the joy I have experienced while sharing in your journey has been immeasurable. Thank you for sharing this with me, God bless you!
