Thank you so much for this again, no we have to wait another week hopefully you’ll find enough time to edit and we can see you all again. Then, the kitchen counters and that is going to be the icing on the cake. I absolutely love your spice cabinet, it is just perfect. Hopefully you have an uneventful week ahead, and that all goes well for Spencer and his re-wiring of the solar panels. It is coming together beautifully. I’m so proud of all of you. When trying to get cable down a conduit that is already in place, use some string-line and a vacuum cleaner. Place the string-line at one end and use the vacuum cleaner to suck the string-line through until it gets to your end. You can then use the string-line to pull through cable, or you can attach something else that may be stronger and pull that through. I have used this technique many times with 100% success. Just a tip from a tradie down under.
@terencehood
@terencehood 2 года назад
I was going to say about the same thing, the examples I've seen they attached bits of plastic sack to the end to help with the suction of the string end.
@JohnSmith-hr3gv

You are probably correct. I know this is done with larger conduits. I usually work with 20mm and 25mm conduit and do not usually have a problem.
@krisw8419

Every episode makes me more of a fan! Why do I love this show so much??? I think I’m astounded by Spencer’s tenacity, Kenzie’s love of the simple things in life (and knowing their blessings which she highlights in her b-roll), and the trial and error of working with limited knowledge toward a tremendous accomplishment. As always, I’m already looking for the next episode-hopefully Kenz already wrapped up a few while Spencer was gone and we won’t have to wait quite as long for the next one (shame on me for complaining about time between episodes when this family eats out of a barn and showers outside for 3years!!! 🤭)

Fishtape is meant to be used with a loop at the end, and you always tape over the wires you wrap onto the loop to cover any possible wire sticking up that might catch on something. That way it's always a smooth operation. You also use lubricant where you begin your feed to assist getting past any tight spots. LOTS of lubricant!!
@WhoDatBoudreaux
@WhoDatBoudreaux 2 года назад
We use 8oz lube per 1000 ft in some cases. That's for tough spots only... But there's nothing worse than easily pulling miles and miles of underground fiber then you hit a spot where the conduit conditions bite you in the ass. Lube it up before digging it up. They sell lube in 5 gallon buckets and even 55gal drums for those who are more adventurous.

I have been following you all through your journey and am glad to see that there are still people in this country who are not afraid to follow their dreams. Off-grid living is a challenge at the best of times but during the low sun months, it could be more challenging. It might be worthwhile to consider adding a few vertical wind turbines to supplement power during that time of the year and after the sun goes down. They could possibly be mounted on the barn to give maximum height without requiring heavy-duty poles. You can't have too much backup power. By the way, your latest issue with the conduit is one I can definitely identify with. I did the same thing when running a hotline to my shed. Even at 72, we can leave our common sense "in idle" when driving forward to get a job completed. Keep up the good work, you are doing a great job.

Spencer - do this to fish the wire through conduit that has a few bends - get a roll of Polyester pulling tape, and a roll of string. You will also need a vacuum. Take the string and tie a wad of paper to the end. The wad should be able to fit inside the pipe but at the same time take up most of the interior diameter. Take your vacuum and go to the other end of the pipe to pull the wad of paper through. This will pull the string through the pipe. Now take the string and tie it to the pulling tape. Pull the string and now you have the pulling tape through the conduit that you can use to pull the wire through.

It is beautiful. 🧡👌🎃

My dad always told me 'plan ahead' when building. I not always done that and found out later that the pipe or conduit was too small. His reasoning was 'it's cheaper' to put it in now. Then have to come back later and tear everything out and replace it. When I tore out the old plaster in the farm house. I put in extra / unused conduit to the attic and second floor. Glad I did later on when something needed to be changed or added. The place is starting to look 'finished'. You'll be looking back at these project video's someday and enjoy them. Hope the family and you are doing well. Take care - be safe (you can keep those snakes down there)

We sometime forget how one person affects another Kenzie till they're not around as I'm sure Spencer feels when your away you can call it companionship or just plain old love. That's when you know you were meant for each other and you can't be without them in your life. Nice idea with the spice rack and Spencer when you're a do it yourselfer we all learn by our mistakes though its hard to accept we're just human. You looked refreshed after you came back good for you. Love you both and don't stay away so long .be careful and stay safe.

A little tip from an Aussie electrician - when you are running your conduit, thread a length of rope through as you are doing it. Much much easier to put that in first than try to thread through your 'fish tape' (or snake as we call it) after the conduit is installed.

Follow-up: Deburr the EMT conduit, and make every join as tight as possible. Long runs are much harder and riskier otherwise.
@Ruiso7

Also for old pipes, you can use a vacuum to pull through a thin rope that is tied to a piece of plastic bag. Just put the vacuum on one end and watch as it feed itself, afterward you can use that thin rope to pull a thicker rope through if the wires are gonna be thick to prevent the thiner rope from breaking. Eadier than digging the whole tube from under ground.
@Ruiso7

@@sirukin7849 for the ground the pvc is better, as EMT rust really fast when burried on dirt.

Another good thing to do when pulling a cable is pull a spare rope at the same time, that way you always have a line fished through the pipe! Also, you can use compressed air and blow a string line tied to a little rag through the pipe.

I totally agree that pulling a spare rope through when removing the cable is the best approach. It eliminates all other hitches.

I have been here from day one and enjoyed every minute. You are both so inspiring to take on a challenge like this with no experience, learning from your mistakes and no matter how things go you continue to push on through good and bad. Not withstanding the enormous challenge of building a house from scratch you gave yourselves an even greater challenge by having two young kids while still having to complete the house. All I can say is wow. And you give us a front row seat to not only watch your house project grow but also your family. I’m sure I speak for the majority when I say thank you for letting us into your lives. All the best.

Wonderful episode xx A good trick if you can’t get a cable down a conduit is to attached a hoover one end and suck a small Cotten tread down it which you can then can pull string through with, then rope and finally the cable. Or even use a compressor and blow the Cotten thread down. Both work if your lucky.

Friction in conduit increases similarly to friction on a winch. Best practice for conduit is to put pulling junctions between every other 90 degree elbow. Three or more consecutive 90 degree elbows will make pulling wire very difficult. Keep the number of elbows (of any angle) to the bare minimum and, as you found out, point all the bell ends the same direction.

Kenzie, you are an outstanding videographer. I don't know if Spence is in involved in this, too, Lord knows he has his hands full, but your videos are so beautiful and so inviting to watch. You have captured a multitude of gorgeous and unusual scenes--sunrises, sunsets, weather changes, the sky, the greenery--even the icky snakes (LOL), everything is all so stunning and I enjoy your videos immensely. Such beautiful panoramic views in each video you have created. Even the music you have chosen for the intro and at the end of the your videos. The only thing is I get sad when your videos end. And as you say editing is very time consuming, too, but you are doing a fabulous job and so are you, Spence. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. As for mistakes, we all can learn from them! You guys have been through a lot and this too, shall pass. I love your children and all the assorted animals, too. Hang in there. You are making progress. Keep up the great work, the both of you.

After working all day I would work at the house until 9pm then drive 45 min home. Saved a ton of money.... And have so much pride in what we accomplished. Now, after 35 yrs, I cant imagine doing it again but there is always something to replace or repair. So, I am still working on this house....

I don’t know if this works with all snakes, (here in Finland we have vipers that are venomous, and colubrids that aren’t) but I spray vinegar around in my garden. I do it again after the rain, it smells a bit at first, but it’s better to not have snakes around. It’s ecological and doesn’t hurt animals, and quite inexpensive on top of it, it doesn’t hurt to try! 🧐

That's how I kill weeds, too, with 35% vinegar. Also, I have two HUGE dogs from my neighbor's yard that sit up on top of something tall stored along their side of the fence and bark down at my little dogs. They put their long legs over like they're going to jump over and it scares me to death when I'm working or hanging clothes. Honestly, I'm terrified of those big dogs. One day I sprayed some weeds, and they took off, so now I spray my side of the wooden fence with 35% vinegar about twice a week. Haven't seen those dogs up there even once.

I live in Texas, kinda far from a big city, which means we have snakes around. This also means we have people who handle our venomous snakes for us, I call them our Snake Wranglers! Anyway, they tell me that scented things don't keep snakes away since they don't smell things the same way we do. They smell with their tongues, I think. That's just what "the snake people" always say, personally I've never tried anything to keep them away. One important thing I did learn about this subject is that snakes are very territorial. So if you have non-venomous snakes camped out on your property, THAT is what keeps the venomous snakes away. (And they keep rodents at bay too. Which is wonderful!) But- If you remove a non-venomous snake, just bcuz it's a snake & it creeps you out, that creates an open territory, and THEN any kind of snake could move in. I certainly don't want a rattlesnake moving in!! So after I ID a nearby snake, and if it's a "good" snake, I just leave them be. If it's a rattlesnake, or any other venomous snake, I call a Snake Wrangler, they come and get it, and relocate it. And I have to hope a non-venomous snake comes to move in next! It's just something you have to get used to when you live in snake country.

Try making a form of bullet head for your fish tape. Or bend a small loop in the end. May work for pushing through. Also when pulling something out attach a string or rope to the end so your old cable pulls a new line in for future use. Ev3n when cutting into a new conduit you can pick up the line. From where you cut in.

3 things that could have been done when running wire through conduit: 1: tie a mule tape to end of the old wire coming out to be used to pull the new wire. 2: tie a disposable grocery bag to a string and vacuum it through to the opposite end, then use the string to pull a stronger mule tape for pulling wire. 3: use a fish tape that has a factory tip on it (since they’re curved) to clear to the hub connections. When initially laying the conduit, chamfer the inside of the pipes to avoid hangups.

I have commented before to you guys, but I think it bears repeating. What you bring to the universe with each video you post is positivity and hope. Watching how humble and patient you both are on camera is so refreshing. In a world filled with pessimism and arrogance, you remind us what goodness looks like. You're good people, good parents, good citizens, etc. This May I will have been married to my college sweat heart for 26 years. Our first house was a 1969 ranch that we put lots of sweat and labor into sanding floors, painting every room, etc. You guys remind me of what my wife and I were doing in the early days of marriage. We still do projects in our current house, in fact it seems there's always a project not quite done. Our kids are now grown , one of which will be moving out next weekend, the other will be moving out likely in 1 year. The idea of living "off-grid" has never been something my wife desired, nor have I necessarily dreamt of this life. Watching how you guys have made a life for yourselves is inspiring and makes me want to follow in your footsteps. Keep bringing hope to the universe. Regards, DrewDaMan

spence , after over 50 years as an electrician ive made all the mistakes and then some , you should always oversize your pipe runs or run spares to facilitate any future changes , it'll cost ya a little more but save some heart ache in the long run , remember to keep your bends to a minimum , run your pipe as the crow flys , and to help that cable pull in smoothly use some wire lube , it can get messy but cleans up easily, if you cant get any wire lube you can use soap as long as what you use doesnt harm the insulation on the wire, youve done an excellent job for someone with no formal training so dont be so hard on yourself
