I purchased an M1A with the sole purpose of creating a clone look-a-like rifle that matched the visual appearance of the M14 from the movie "Black Hawk Down" that was carried by the actor Johnny Strong as he played the role of Randy Shughart on screen.

Both Gordon and Shughart were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for their actions. Worth mentioning.

Just imagining that you're carring a .308 into battle and because of the weight and size of the mags, your ammo pool is extremely limited and you need to hold off against an angry mob that disregards their own safety to charge at you like zombies with guns. That's frightening.
@eddietat95
@eddietat95 2 года назад
I know we're on a gun channel, but I would imagine that Randy had trained with countless rounds on the platform - so much so that the gun and ammo choice debate isn't even relevant. His #1 concern would be the men in the chopper.

@@eddietat95 Which, like I said. Balls on the dude who was only there as an overwatch to support from the air with the limited ammo a DMR guy is supposed to have and pushed himself to hold ground against a wave.

@@Excalibur01 Part of the reason he used the weapon was because the M855 rounds that was standard, combined with the short barrel carbines Delta was using, tended to penetrate too well and “icepick” through enemies. So since you’re just poking a small, .22 caliber hole in someone hopped up on khat, they often could shrug off those rounds and still come after you. The 7.62 NATO round, however, did far more damage so even a drugged up militiaman was still stopped with a single shot from it. PFC Howe said other Delta guys used to tease Shughart about insisting on carrying an M14, but after seeing how poorly their M855 rounds performed, decided that Randy was the smartest guy in the unit for carrying this gun. Obviously, nowadays, we have better bullet technology to make 5.56 perfectly serviceable, but I definitely know why Randy Shughart insisted on it in the Battle of Mogadishu.

A basic M1a, modern aimpoint and a paint job is not what made Shughart's M14 special. These rifles were built from a national match spec, likely custom built by the AMU armorers. I think an aimpoint 3000 or 5000 in his actual rifle. There's a laundry list of modifications your rifle is missing, let alone differences in the parts themselves. A search of national match or m21 modifications should give you a good idea on what these rifles are truly capable of. Another difference, M14 parts were forged whereas many of the Springfield commercial parts are cast.

When a Delta Operator uses and M14/M1A over the more modernized M16/M4 and the numerous other weapon choices offered to them, that tells you something right there.

I think they could make a .22 work if you told them to. These are the guys who train to hit targets at 300 meters with a colt 1911. M-14 is a very accurate rifle, and I can imagine paired with a delta operators marksmanship, is unmatched.

So.. cool vid, thankyou.. however, for the money involved, weighed against practical use and need for 308.. I have used an 18" scout squad from rk guns for $1399 (in 2018) with a vortex crossfire forward mounted.. a very wicked combination.. I know that was not the intent of you vid but I just wanted to throw this in for the average guy with little or budgeted monies that wants to go "m14/308".

I'm not sure if you noticed any fitment issues with the Aimpoint Pro mounted to the ARMS 18 mount, but the torque knob on my Aimpoint Pro comes in contact with the ARMS 18 mount, preventing it from fitting securely to the mount. I had to replaced the Aimpoint Pro mount with an Aimpoint 30mm low ring to fix this problem.

Yeah but my advice to you as an owner of two M1a standard builds is to get the Bassett machine picatinny M1a mount. When you look into it it’s so hard to find a bad experience, and I’m not kidding when I say it’s 10x easier to mount and dismount, it literally takes 2 minutes with no tools other than the little mount specific wrench that’s included by the company.
