The time has come to start this restoration project of an old mud wagon from Washington state. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles brings many challenges and this project os no different. Much of the story behind this coach is beginning to unveil itself as I spend more and more time with it. Follow along on the discovery.

archaeology is the study of people and how they lived through artifacts and the sites they were found at. This isn't archaeology. No documentation was done, no measurements written down nothing was recorded about the original wagon.
@RobertFay
@RobertFay Год назад
@@captainfancypants4933 *- Your contribution would not feel as if its intent was to be mean-boned to make other's meaning wrong if you had only first said something like; "Agreed: per the gist of your meaning".* *- I doubt the type of people here would hit the thumbs down button, but I would not be surprised that many might have thought of it, and then chosen to leave you all to yourself alone.* *- I doubt you did mean it to be mean-boned. Rather, you had a truth to contribute.* *- Please, what would be the correct terminology you would use for the sleuthing that Dave is doing to figure out something from a past time without document ion and measurements from an artifact within the archaeology of a previous culture?*
@motagrad2836
@motagrad2836 Год назад
@@captainfancypants4933 is correct based on the college coursework I had. What you are witnessing is "living history". If it was completely gone and being recreated from scratch be people who were not trained by others but solely relying on archaeological remains then it would be experimental archaeology. The lines can be done at times, but they exist. A trained blacksmith making a horseshoe or a switch making a sword is not engaging in experimental archaeology unless they do experiments (aka, look at Tod Cutler's channel). Engels coach shop is great in trying to maintain a record of the wainwright and wainwright crafts

Throughout my life I've often sarcastically repeated the phrase "I could watch him work all day", but with Dave Engels I say that with incredible sincerity and respect!! From the construction of the 20 mule team Borax wagons where I crawled aboard the Engels wagon, to the current project where a remarkable wagon will rise from a literal pile of debris, I am constantly amazed and educated by the incredible talent, knowledge and dedication to the craft that Dave brings to bear on every single project. This is where the decades of experience really pay off, along with close attention to details. On the issue of the nut being 2" from the iron instead of 1 1/2", could it be that there was another 1/2" layer of something there? I've run into this in trying to restore old machinery, where they didn't have a shorter bolt, so they used a long one with a shim. This wouldn't happen in a factory, but maybe in a barnyard.

@@rfd0798 I know all about those splinters. A large portion of woodworking is smoothing wood so you don't get splinters off of it. Once I got a splinter making some routed signs and I was like I'll teach you, you dirty so and so piece of wood! So I grabbed a torch and burnt all the splinters off of it. Then I was like, Hey I like that look. So then I started burning all of the signs I made. Now that's a step in the process. But that happened a long time ago.

Since there don't seem to be any pictures, it's going to be real difficult argue with whatever you choose to do but I certainly understand the mental turmoil here. But for a time machine. Of one thing I'm positive, the quality of workmanship in your final result will exceed that of the original.

Fascinating, thank you. Going through a similar process with my car. Finally started the ash frame. I know what the body looks like now I make a frame to fit. The factory ones were quite simple. Lots of simple butt joints and metal brackets to reinforce everything. I stick to factory as much as possible but with no plans or a real one to measure a bit of it is guess work. I find wood much harder than metal to work with. Metal is more forgiving with mistakes!
