Building the TotalBoat Sport Dory: Episode 30 - The Guards and Inwhales + Audience Q&A

We're getting pretty close to finishing up and launching our TotalBoat Sport Dory!!! In this week's Episode we answer some great questions from our audience as well as taking a close look at how Lou installs the guards and inwhales.
The guards go on first and are made out of one long piece of lumber. We will cut a 45 degree bevel on bottom side of each guard using a fence attached to our table saw. The pieces will then be bedded down with polysulfide and wood screws.
The inwhales are slightly more complicated. Made out of much lighter pieces of lumber they will run inside the boat from the breasthook all the way to the transom. We need to transfer a series of angles and measurements in order to get the fit close and then use a final saw-fit cut to make the piece fit tightly into position. The inwhales are then secured to the boat with rivets that go directly through the guards and each frame.

The Dory is turning out really nice. I'll bet that hull slices through the water very easily. Whoever ended up with it has a nice, well constructed boat.

Hi Lou, No matter if you are French or French-Portugese or vice-versa you are an outstanding American shipwright. I have enjoyed every video you've made. Please keep up showing the many fields of knowledge a shipwright has to have to build a boat. I would hope that a lot of young people get to see your work. Thank you Lou for making the videos and I wish you all the best, Joe

Lou, thank you for sharing another story. I find great satisfaction in watching you design and build a thing of beauty that must give you great satisfaction to contemplate. I also greatly enjoy watching you identify and address challenges in the building process using the large store of knowledge and skill that you have built up over the years. Your explanations are so concise and clear that it is a pleasure listening - But I admit I must join those other subscribers who would love to see you address the brand new challenge of building the oars using that same wealth of skill, knowledge and the patience to do it right. Thanks again.

Another great series Lou and the Sport Dory looks fantastic. A 23 foot V bottom skiff would be really interesting to watch being built and it is the size of boat that I would want to build. One of the questions I had about the work skiff in series 1 is how could you turn it into a V bottom hull?

I'm still enjoying this boat building series. I'm noticing that a lot of geometry is involved in boat building and rather than trying to calculate all of the angles, lengths, arcs, etc. you 'eyeball' much of this, making it fit skillfully and professionally!....and that I really like! Each video is quite unique and this keeps my interest and me motivated to continue (retired now) woodworking as a hobby. Thanks and I'm looking forward to the next video. ....13

One problem with using live or natural edged boards on a boat is that it necessarily includes the sapwood. The sapwood's prone to rot and insect attack, and in a marine environment it's almost guaranteed to give you problems. With air-dried wood, even in a house, there's the potential for boring insects to have hitched a ride in the sapwood from the wood lot or saw mill, and then you start noticing little piles of sawdust on the floor in odd corners.

I know my comment is a few years after you made this video. Have you been watching the restoration of the Tally Ho boat on the Sampson Boat Co channel. I have learned a lot from both your channels. In the 1970’s I had built a small hydroplane racing boat from Clark Craft plans. Now that I am retired I would like to build another boat.

Hi Lou ! Concerning your name, I think your grandfather was right. I am French and it sounds like a southern french (Occitan) name to me. Although, as portuguese and french languages have common roots, it's very possible that there's a portuguese equivalent to this name (probably with some minor differences in the spelling). Thanks for your videos, I'm learning a lot !

I'd like to second the set-up with Leo from Sampson Boat. His rebuild of the 1910 racing cutter, Tally Ho, using purple-heart for the keel, is quite educational as well. I wish he showed a little more detail and explaination lime you do, but it is still looking like it will be a beautiful yacht when he is done. I don't know if you could go to Oregon, I think that's where he is doing he project, but to see you on site with Tally Ho, and the conversation you two would likely have, would be awesome. Wishing this could come to pass.

Hi Lou, I agree with you on not leaving the live edge. I feel your aesthetic decision is great. The live edge would have detracted from the annual rings (that are beautiful) and the interesting joinery. Well done! I too look forward to the rings coming alive. I know you said you'll be painting it white. However, given your comment on the breasthook coming alive will you be oiling the wales and breasthook?

I love what you are doing and I hope to build a dory as soon as the wife will let me. That said, this is the second video where my heart was racing the whole time you were using the table saw. I see that after 50 years you still have all your digits but I worry for the yahoos with too much money that are looking for a new hobby. To make that 45 degree chamfer I would have used a chamfer bit in a router. Without a a router i would have used the tablesaw with a standard throatplate in place. I teach all of my apprentices to run stock through the tablesaw like they were shooting pool. You don't have to fear the table saw, but the moment you lose respect for it, very bad things can happen. I love your work, just worried about the yahoos.
