Dude!!! Been looking up snowboard reviews on RU-vid since 2008 and I am so stoked to come here in 2022 and find a review of this depth and caliber! Thanks for the review. I'm torn now on what to get. I'm 5'8/185lb 9 boot. I typically ride in Tahoe, and have been eyeballing the 22-23 Custom X 158 (waiting on stock to be replenished.) I'd say I'm an intermediate trying to take things to the next level on non-tree runs. I'm using a Burton Easy Living 158 right now, with some equally as old BOA Salomon boots. I'm also looking to upgrade bindings and boots and am looking at the ION StepOn's and X Re:Flex bindings. Given this is a big all encompassing (hopefully) upgrade, I am trying to make sure I make the most educated decision. Which board would you recommend? Any input on the boots/bindings?
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
The Ion SO/SO combo sounds good but you could easily go with Photon's too. You might be happier with something else that can float easier for Tahoe Riding. The CX is one of the last boards I would like to be on in deep Tahoe Pow. If you are only about Burton go Flight Attendant 159 or Hometown Hero 156 instead. Or hit me up here if you want much more accurate, in depth advice. thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-and-boot-advice/

@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
No you don't need Burton Bindings. Most bindings now have discs that are compatible with the Burton Channel System. And if you buy Burton Bindings best to buy Re:Flex and not EST. That way you can use them on non-Channel System boards.

Really glad I stumbled upon your videos. Your reviews are awesome. I am deciding between the custom and custom X. I am a pretty aggressive big mountain/all mountain rider. Many thanks! Hard to say with knowing so little about you. If you are riding clean conditions and not all day maybe Custom X. If you see more uneven terrain/ride all day/on weekends go Custom or possibly the Flight Attendant or Hometown Hero if you want better float in the deep deep you get down south. Thanks for the comparison! Still unsure what size I should go for (debating between 158 and 162). I'm 5'9, 190 lbs, size 10 boots, pretty solid build (workout daily) and ride pretty aggressively on a smaller resort hill. Riding mostly groomers, rarely park, getting into switch more, and I mainly ride for the aggressive carving (typically long drawn out but would like to mix in short ones as well). Any advice would be much appreciated!
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
Tough call. I would go 158 Custom Camber if you are throwing it around switch and making tighter radius turns and across the groomer to circle carves. That being said the 162 will carve harder and more drawn out better. You might just find the 162 a bit too much as the day goes on though.

@@thegoodridesnow Thank so much for the reply! I should specify, I think I'll go with the Custom X camber, does this change your answer? I believe you found that the 158 might be better for someone lighter? I'm currently weighing 190 but sturdy with daily exercise. Thanks for your help! :)

I’m an int bordering on adv rider, living in FL it’s really tricky to get a lot of runs in lol. I was on a 57 pure pop process for a couple weeks last season and enjoyed it but found it to be just a tiny bit washy when I was pushing hard or jacket flapping pushing 60 mph etc.. would a 58 custom camber be a good choice? Just looking for something with a little bit more hold with the same if not more pop. Just curious if the custom camber would be much less forgiving or just a small loss in forgiveness. I didn’t find the process difficult to ride but I had a few moments where I felt like the board was going to wash out in sketchy spots. Would love a board that I can still jump around on but have that hold and response when bombing groomers

Now I'm looking for a camber snowboard and primarily ride all mountain. I've narrowed my choices down and the sizes available are 153, 154, and 156. Thanks for the review, second season in a row I'm looking at my board thinking I made a huge mistake. I rode a 2006 custom 154 bought new until 2021 when I decided to give it away for free and buy a home town hero, what a mistake! I sized it wrong and ended up selling and buying into a 2022 warpig last year. Here I am again just nostalgic about my custom looking for that same magic only to find I should maybe be looking back into the family tree. Hmm My only real complaint with the '06 board was that it took all 125 lbs of me to throw around at the end of the day it was a heavy beast. Maybe something like the terrirtory manager (out of stock ugh) will give me back that dose of camber I want without some of the draw backs you mentioned of the custom. I'm mostly in the trees physically, figuratively, physcologically and philisophically when it comes to these boards so appreciate your vids and thoughts. Cheers!

I most recently rode a Kemper freestyle 161 (flat? I think) camber, which felt really good. Previous board I rented was a 155, and I felt like that was a bit small and sketchy. I feel like 158W is where I’m headed, since everyone seems to say 162 is too big for people around my size, and the 158 might be too narrow for an 11 boot? Or do you think 162 is manageable? Finally someone who agrees (somewhat) with me... I still can't understand why the Custom is so popular, to me it's just an inferior version of the custom X - at least since the design overhaul. Two seasons back, I bought a Custom 156 to complement my Custom X, I wanted a second board that's just a touch more forgiving and the Custom promised to provide exactly that. I quite liked it the one day I rode it but as soon as I straped onto my Custom X at the end of the day to compare it against, I immediately noticed how much better the Custom X was, the Custom felt like a plank in comparison. The CX feels way more lively and light so it's much easier to engage turns (not to mention if you like messing around or do park riding). And here's the kicker: the Custom even feels stiffer! So it's much slower turning, it almost feels sluggish/plankish but it's still feels stiffer longitudely and torisionally (not really stiffer but slower to engage). Also, the Custom X does feel noticeably lighter! I weighted both and in absolute measures it's not a world of a difference but man on snow it is definately noticeable! Not only when doing ollies and spins but also when engaging the board into a turn - it just feels easier to handle (for reference I'm about 78kg/172 lbs). The only positive I could attest the Custom is that it felt a bit more damp. So all in all the Custom X ist just a better verison of the Custom and everyone considering getting a Custom should get a Custom X in my eyes! It's a great board for riding groomers and I use it on most days I even bought a second one in 158. if someone is intersted, I wrote a more extensive review/comparison in this thread: www.snowboardingforum.com/threads/burton-custom-x-review.262095/#post-3367313immediately

You probably wont see this comment, your reviews are amazing, they give the most detail and you cover so many different items. Im just wondering if i move my bindings along the channel on the custom camber so that they are center and dont have any set back , so i can ride switch the same(for park riding), will it effect how it turns/rides just generally all around the mountain (except for the fact that the nose will be shorter and tail will be longer than used to)?, im new to setting up boards so i dont really know how this works.
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
Many thanks! So I have to do a video on this but if you want to center your bindings on the board move it up 12.5mm up from the reference stance marker. Then you have a board centered on sidecut. You don't want to center it on board because the nose is longer than the tail so you will actually be forward on sidecut which isn't ideal. Make sense?
@chazladtheboss9606
@chazladtheboss9606 Год назад
@@thegoodridesnow what will a board thats forward on sidecut change when riding
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
You mean past being centered on sidecut? It will not ride as well and it's not recommended. With the Custom Camber I would suggest riding it close to reference stance for groomers and set back as far as you can for powder. You can ride it 12.5mm up from reference but don't go any further.
@chazladtheboss9606
@chazladtheboss9606 Год назад
@@thegoodridesnow so if I want to ride park/switch I should just keep it reference? Or move the stance 12.5mm up so the nose and tail are same length? Like is it better just to ride switch with a bit of a longer tail then to move the bindings 12.5mm up? Sorry to bother you with all these questions, I really appreciate your quick responses.
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
Keep it on reference or 12.5mm forward from Reference if you want to ride switch. The nose and tail will not be the same length and don't try to center the bindings in the middle of the board. The nose is longer than the tail so if you try to center your bindings on the board you will be too far forward on the sidecut and it will ride weird. There is a big difference between being centered on sidecut and centered on the board. For riding switch on a directional board like this it helps to be centered on sidecut. Just use the "REF" marker on the channel.

Hey dude I live on the east coast, icy groomers, is this a good traditional camber board that will help me focus on carving ?
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
Yeah it carves hard in good conditions. I have found the Custom X to not hold an edge as well as some rides out there though. So have many of my crew over the years. For east coast carving look at the Gnu Gremlin, Gnu Banked Country, Lib Tech Ejack Knife, Yes Hybrid, Yes Optimistic and Yes Standard Uninc.
@Corythehausbaus
@Corythehausbaus Год назад
@@thegoodridesnow what about the lib tech dynamo ? I am debating between magne traction vs just traditional camber... hard choice
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow Год назад
Yeah that could for sure work too. Not as disrupted a sidecut as the boards I suggested above (has mellow mag) but still more grippy than the Custom X. The Dynamo is actually full camber with only a passive bend in the middle that doesn't touch the snow. It feels like full camber. So you are comparing pretty much full camber and MTX vs. Traditional Camber.

Very. I've ridden this board in various designs for almost 20 yrs. Its been twinish to pretty directional but never a directional twin. Look carefully at the sidecut of the Custom and then the Process, Name Dropper and Free Thinker. You can see the sidecut has a slightly more shallow entry near the nose and a deeper exit near the tail. I would say its more twinish these days which is very close to a directional twin. Hi. My height is 182 cm, weighs 85 kg, Boots size (Salomon) is 43.5. I mostly ride the slope. I need a carving board and, to a lesser extent, to ride near a slope in fresh snow. Would I like a Burton Custom X with a length of 162 cm? Thanks.

I'm exactly the same, and I just ordered a 158W Custom from my local Burton store. From past experience (owning and renting), and advice from the guy in the store, the 158W seems like the perfect fit for me (and my EU size 11 feet).

@mikeuptegrove

Why’d you size up from the custom to custom X? Wouldn’t you want to downsize to compensate for the extra stiffness in the X?
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow 16 дней назад
Its lighter and more chattery/less fun in uneven snow. So sizing up makes it less chattery but it's still more than the Custom.
@mikeuptegrove
@mikeuptegrove 16 дней назад
@@thegoodridesnow more chattery than the regular custom? But if it’s stiffer and you size up doesn’t it make it harder to control because of the stiffness? You think it’s lighter weight is what’s for sure making it chattery and not it’s rigidly from the extra carbon? I ride a 156 regular custom and you think the x should be sized up? Thanks.
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow 16 дней назад
Yes, it's more chattery than the Custom. It's most likely a combination of carbon, the lighter core, and the thin top sheet. I've ridden many boards with lots of carbon and lighter cores that also have rubber, urethane, thicker top sheets, or even metal in the core to dampen the ride/reduce chatter. I know nothing about you, so it's hard to say if you should size up. I'd at least need your boot size, height, and weight to suggest a size. @thegoodridesnow

I paired Clews with the Burton Deep thinker and it rode fine. It should turn the Custom easily. Only concern is the bottom of the clew is all hard plastic so it could dammage ur topsheet over time but that is the same for most boards.

The edge hold of the Custom Camber isn't as good as some boards these days with very disrupted sidecuts but if it's only on your heel side that is something on your end. It might not be centered correctly, your highback might not be rotated or your turning technique heel side might need some work.

Sharpen contact point edges. They are probably factory detuned but you'll get more grip by sharpening them. Just yesterday rode on really hard pack with my Custom and edge hold was just fine.
@thegoodridesnow
@thegoodridesnow 5 месяцев назад
Great to hear that works for ya. I have and it helps but then gets more catchy and still isnt there with many disrupted sidecuts. I had a friend who tunes boards full time. We did an in depth tuning test with Burton vs Lib & Gnu over several days. Burton always had less grip and felt more locked in.
@pjk-rips
@pjk-rips 5 месяцев назад
@@thegoodridesnow Yeah would be nice to get to try some fex magnetraction board some time. Then again I really like full camber and haven't got any issues with catchiness even with fully sharpened edges. Started in the 90's and probably slammed back in the day enough to learn to keep the edges from catching lol.

Thanks for the in depth review, Switched to full camber version this season, got second hand pretty cheap from my friend, this thing is beast, I love the thrilling feeling when hitting jump. Question: how Salomon assassin / assassin pro flex feel compare to the custom camber? Was looking assassin / assassin pro for hard icy condition, and learning butter tricks. High intermediate ability (I guess) 40% of the time spent in the park and love craving also hard charging. Thank.
@thegoodridesnow

I would pass on both and instead get something that is more of a true twin with more disruption in the sidecut like the Rossignol Jibsaw or YES Greats or YES Basic Uninc or Gnu RC C3 or Lib Tech TRS. Old question but having ridden both Assassin is a notch softer and has way looser forgiving feel on snow. Once I got used to Custom's precision I basically couldn't ride with Assassin anymore as it feels so washy compared to full camber board. Custom holds it's edges notch better on hard snow because of stronger camber and stiffer flex but it will wash out on hard ice too (what wouldn't?).

And I can't decide. Custom X Custom X Flying V (though I hear if you are beginner its good, but it looks fun in chop. Even though I grew up riding nothing but camber for over a decade before the advent of new shapes, I gotta say that I do appreciate a multitude of board shapes. I still ride pure camber boards about 75% of the time, but there’s certain situations and days where I find other shapes can take my overall enjoyment in my riding day to new heights. Like in all reality, if there’s 2+ feet of fresh powder on the mountain there’s no way I’m taking out a camber board short of the Lib Tech Retro Ripper, but I’m still more likely to reach for a rear foot camber and rocker from the waist to the nose board for a day like that. As for a Flying V or a C2X or anything like that, they’re terrible for traversing, but if the day is a little icy they can be truly excellent for keeping the day fun
