Andrew. I've been watching probably 25 - 30 of your videos in the last month. You are one impressive young man. Vast knowledge of all things mechanical & and energy rarely seen in people. I'm a retired 3M Executive - never had the nerve to start my own business. Worked 30+ years for a Fortune 100 company, always had a great income & benefits. YOU are what makes America great. Fearless & never look to anyone but yourself for help & success. I admire you so much Andrew. Your ability to have fun at work & play is infectious. Thank you for always finding a way to make every video - not only entertaining - but meaningful as well. Job well done.

How old is that truck? I used to drive one that was more modern than that 30 years ago. They stopped putting crash gearboxes in trucks here in Europe about 30 years ago and the cab on that truck reminds me of a model A ford car. Trucks today drive just like expensive cars with automatic gearshifts and every creature comfoft. I don't understand why American trucks are so primitive.

Im a Truck Driver..You should change the stick shift Handle to one that has a Splitter on it.. Much easyer to Shift with the Splitter at your finger tips, instead of reaching down every time.. Keep light pressure on the stick shift before you shift, so when you let off on the accelerator the stick will slide out of gear and into the next gear quicker and better timed with the engine RPM Nice Truck, its really gonna make your job easyer
@Tokatt
@Tokatt 5 лет назад
Im an european truck driver and I love American trucks so reading your comment I would like to know that couldnt you just step on the clutch every time you shift?
@cornishlad97
@cornishlad97 5 лет назад
Tokatt The US trucks do not have sincro-meshed transmissions like a normal manual car that you or I drive every day. The sincro-mesh allows you to move the shifter from any gear to any gear without having to worrying about matching engine and transmission speeds (this is to put it simply!). With a non synchro-meshed transmission the driver has to do the work that the synchromesh does in a normal car of matching shaft speeds. So basically without a synchromesh you have to match the engine and gearbox speeds regardless of whether the clutch is in or not so you may as well just not use it. Rev to the top of one gear, lift of the throttle and move the shifter to neutral then push the shifter into the next gear when the revs fall to the correct point. Tricky to get the hang of I know! The manuals are mostly made by Eaton fuller and mostly come in 9,13 and 18 speed variants. But they each shift in a standard 5 speed gear box patterns just stacked on top of each other with different gear ranges. So in a 9 speed you start in low range 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 then shift to high range and back to 2, 3, 4, 5 and there’s your 9 gears. For the 13 and 18 speeds this pattern is the same but the 13 speed the high range 4 gears are each split in half and an 18 speed both high and low range gears are split. It’s a big job and a learning curve to drive these trucks! Hope this helps!

@dennissmith460
@dennissmith460 4 года назад
@@Tokatt You can use the clutch if you choose,. In fact Eaton Fuller reccomends double clutching their transmissions. Thing is that floating gears is much easier, and as long as you do it right, it doesn"t hurt the transmission. I've been driving truck for 34 years, and I always float gears.

I just stumbled across this video, and it's the first one of yours I've watched. I'm a 72 yr. old guy, been around trucks and equipment my whole life, owned and operated triaxles, dump trailers, lowbeds, road tractors, and owned several backhoes, excavators, and dozers, and done all my own maintenance. So that being said, I wanted to offer you some corrective information. You referred to that Jake brake as an exhaust brake, but that's not what it is. It's an engine brake, which uses the engine's compression to slow the truck down, as opposed to an exhaust brake that blocks off the exhaust. The brake you have, and is a Jake brake, opens the exhaust valve just before it gets to the top of the compression stroke, thus relieving the compression just before it reaches the point at which it detonates. So what it's doing is slowing the engine down by using the compression just before it fires and makes power. That sound you hear in the exhaust is that compression being released. The older Cummins like yours have 3 seperate cylinder heads, that why that 2,4,6 switch. The Jake brake was invented by the Jacobs Manufacturing Co., the same one that makes the Jacobs chucks on drills. That was I think back in the 50's or thereabouts. They offered it to Clessy Cummins, one of the Cummins engine family, and he rejected the idea, so Jacobs started making them, and the rest is history. One more unrelated thing you didn't mention about that 8LL transmission, is that on that truck, I believe there should be an air switch on the dash somewhere labeled "deep reduction". That gives you all your gears in a very low ratio which is great for crawling around off road in a dump truck. Ok, that's all I wanted to say. Trying to be helpful, not arrogant !! Someone else may have already told you these things, but I didn't read all the comments.

Lol but as far as pure power and size, the 797 comes in at 650 tons vs the F800 at 18 tons...797 at 4,000 hp to the Ford’s ~230

Oh Shit! Hey, I just saw a Potential Killer, Andrew! Your truck does not have an Exhaust Brake, it has a Genuine By-God Three-Stage Jacobs Engine Brake. This the Very BEST you can get. The Killer is, your Clutch switch is not adjusted correctly, that is why the Jake kills the engine when you're in Neutral. It is up at the top of the clutch pedal, under the dash, and it has a little bendy antenna-spring-looking-thing that contacts the clutch pedal. It is adjusted too tight. Your engine SHOULD Idle with the Jake Turned On. I will explain how this can Kill you, Learned it The HARD Way. I was coming off a hill with 47 tons of coal, and coming down a steep to a 90-degree Left. Halfway through the curve, the transmission Jumped Out of Fourth gear, and the Jake Killed the engine. INSTANT Runaway. To make it Worse, Paystars have FULL Power Steering, and when the engine dropped dead the power steering died too. Without the engine running Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn't steer that thing. The ONLY way you can cut the wheel without the engine running is to put your left leg up on the A-pillar to give yourself something to Push Against, and if you notice, there ain't enough ROOM to get your leg up. Long story short, I somehow managed to Kick In my Driver Magic and Get Out of THAT One by the Skin of my Teeth and the Grace of God. I will say, it took me half an hour to get my anus to Let Go of the Seat Cushion so I could get out and pee, and I farted foam for a Week. PLEASE Go Out Right NOW and adjust that switch Correctly, just back it off just enough that the engine will idle by itself with the Jake Brake ON. So I can SLEEP. This same Truck I was driving had run away with a previous driver, and he didn't know what happened, he just Bailed out, and let it Go. It ran off into the cliff and ground the whole driver's door and fender off. Saw the Tarper, and you REALLY need to move your Selector switch for the Hi-Range Up on the front or right side of the stick where your fingers can reach it easily, shifting will be MUCH Better.

@atsernov 5 лет назад
That doesn't sound right , if you adjust the clutch bypass to where it idles in neutral with the clutch released then the Jake brake would not engage in gear either.. because the clutch is released and your adjustment kills the Jake brake. For what you are describing to work right, you'd need a couple of other sets of switches on the shiftier to disable the Jake with the gear lever in neutral. In total the system would have 5 switches to disable the exhaust brake, one for the clutch pressed, one for the throttle pressed; then one for the clutch released which would run thru two switches on the shift lever for the gear lever tipped forward and tipped back. You'd need the tree extra switches to allow the first clutch switch to disable the exhaust brake when the truck is in gear and the clutch is pressed.
@chrissampson2929
@chrissampson2929 5 лет назад
If something like that we’re to happen common sense would be to slam it back in to gear and let it restart itself Or a high enough gear to help stop itself with the brakes. You would still have air in the system. Still have brakes Just saying. Also to 47 tons as a load I call bs especially in a 10 wheeler. I’d have to check weights but I’m pretty certain the truck and load together wouldn’t even be that . 38 tons in an 18 wheeler is an overload

Some old skool drivers swear by not using the clutch. If you know how to do it, it CAN be smoother than using the clutch, as speed can be lost in clutching, but it can wear out the transmission faster if you don’t do it right. The clutch is there for a reason, and not only for starting. Starting from a stop is the only time you put the clutch all the way to the floor.

Later in life I rented a track hoe and tracked loader to relandscape my yard. The contractor across the street doing a foundation pad came over one afternoon and said it looked like I knew what I was doing. I’ve always loved gizmos from planes to zero turn lawnmowers. Take care!

Yeah, I had the same experience with a "crash gearbox" (that's what we called it in the UK) over 40 years ago driving a small truck for work. Eventually got good at it - you have to be smooth and gentle - just light pressure into the next gear waiting for the revs to match and it falls right in without crashing or crunching.

It was both financially relieving that the risk was gone and I could give my kids the life I wanted for them, and very difficult given the business was like my first child. My kids got to be the age where running 100mph all day just didn't let me do what I wanted to with them so the decision was made for me but it was tough. Hey Andrew, I'm sure you've caught on to shifting this beast just fine by now and there's probably a ton of great advice in the comments. I couldn't help but drop one more here that has stuck with me from my crop hauling days: don't use the whole palm of your hand to push the shifter forward into gear. Instead rest your palm on the top of the shifter or use your fingers to push it forward. What can happen is that it can slip out of gear just as you apply power and violently force itself backward. I was lucky enough to just snap the top off the shifter when it happened to me, instead of breaking my wrist!

Andrew, I used to repair electrical systems on semi's and I found the easiest way to adjust the belt on the alternator is with a large channel lock put one side on the ear for the bolt and the other on the end of the adjuster bracket. same for the A/C compressor the walls on the alternator and the A/C unit are so thin you can put a hole in it with a pry bar if you don't put it in the right place.
