I have an excellent local eBike shop, and my wife had used them for a couple of eBike conversions, so when I was ready to buy an eBike it was a no-brainer. I went to the shop, test rode about 6 different eBikes, and bought one the same day. They put it together for me and I picked it up a couple of hours later and rode it home. As an unplanned bonus, they give a 25% discount on any work (not parts) they do on a bike bought from that shop. They also did a free tune-up after I'd ridden it a while, for any stretching cables etc. which happens with any new bike. I'm not saying I'd never buy online, but being able to ride the actual bike you are going to buy is a big plus. I do get that it can be cheaper to buy online, and anything you get will work fine initially, but issues always arise, and it's nice to have a friendly local shop that can help with mechanical stuff.

5:40 I did weeks of research and decided on a large, red Velotric Discover 2. One of my local bike stores sells Velotric, so I went there. They had the smaller size (which isn’t too small) for me to test drive, which confirmed my choice. They had a large, red D2 coming in three days (yesterday) and will call me when they have it ready for me to ride home. Ironically, the Velotric web site is sold out of the D2’s, so you’d have to preorder and wait for several weeks. So, I got the benefits of buying local and they had exactly what I wanted when the internet didn’t! Go figure.

Very good video. I think when buying an ebike, you have to consider 4 factors, and figure out what's the right mix for you: Price Performance Range Risk It's kind of like that old triangle for doing a project, where the 3 factors are quality, cost, and speed of completion, and you pick the two that are most important to you because you can't have all three. Same thing here. If you want long range performance at low risk, it's going to cost more. If you're willing to accept less range or performance, you can still keep the risk down and get the price down. If you want range and performance at a cheaper cost, you'll have to take more risk (by risk I mean buying from a lesser known company with potentially sketchy support/business practices). These days you can generally strike a pretty resonable balance. My bike is an Engwe M20, which has good range, decent performance, and cost around 1500, and while it's not a top tier company it's not a complete unknown either. I think buying from a store will get you the lowest risk and the highest cost. Buying from brand X online will get you the lowest cost and the highest risk. Everything else falls somewhere in-between, and each person has to figure out for himself what balance he's comfortable with.

The 2 major advantages to online sales are price and selection. You can get any e-bike you choose. Local shops let you try before you buy and they assemble, tune, and service what they sell. No wrong way to go. I've done both and will continue to do so.

If your budget is limited and can only afford stuff for less than a grand, then you gotta go online, if your budget is higher, I think a shop is better for service and easy purchase experience.

I find most bike shops to be insufferably elitist. I decided to buy some tools and learn to fix my own bike. It's not rocket science and you can do it in your living room. There's a million you tube videos covering every aspect of bike maintenance and repair, including ebikes.

Thank you for watching Frank. You are correct, but that is changing very very quickly as more and more shops are opening up about bike stores being elitist. Of course, you are correct it’s not difficult to do your own work, but sometimes it’s nice to just have someone else do it whether it is time, or whatever the reason, it is always good to have an option.

Lets see,,, In a bicycle store you walk out with the bike assembled and adjusted to your needs. You walk out with a bike that fits your body, your area of use and intent of use. For me it's a no brainer.

I always buy at LBS because I am picky about bike fit and need to test ride. I am also not qualified to put together a bike! I also love my bike mechanic and I want him to stay in business!
