Buying Out A Leased Car .. (When it does/doesn't make sense)

In this video I discuss when it does and doesn't make sense to buy out a leased car, or even leasing a car with the intention of purchasing it.
Visit SaveOnMyAuto.com to receive pricing from multiple dealers in your area: bit.ly/2XkXs1Q
This is also partially a response to a Dave Ramsey video "should I buyout my leased car?"
Ultimately, the market will dictate whether or not your lease end purchase price is great or horrible, and instead of taking general advice, you should always compare numerical data when trying to make that decision!

A lease is simply selling price, plus interest, plus initiation fees just like a loan. The better deal your lease is the worse buying the car at the end of the lease will be. Now there are some cases where the lease incentives or lease interest rate(money factor) is significantly better than purchasing the vehicle. In those cases it is possible that leasing the vehicle and then purchasing it will be better than just getting a loan right from the start. However, in those cases you will likely find that leasing the car, turning it in at the end of the lease, and then leasing another car is the best financial decision if you negotiate a good lease deal. When the resell value of a car is higher than the residual at the end of the lease it typically means one of two things. Either the residual is very low and so the payments were much higher or the residual was high but the car holds its value well. In that case the interest rate is typically very high so the lease payments are also high. Your goal with a lease should always be to get as much money as possible off of the MSRP. Get the buy rate for money factor and then turn the car back into the dealer when the lease is over. Let the dealer take the loss at the end of the lease.

mpgxsvcd wanted to get your thoughts on my comment above. I thought about leases in a similar way you do... just a loan with an option... but wanted to get your thoughts on the finance charge and how that’s actually calculated.... seems to me you’re getting a lower payment by (1) likely having a better residual than if you depreciated the car over a similar period, and (2) having a longer period for that value (depreciation plus finance charge) than a loan financing period vs. 60 or 72 months): www.wikihow.com/Calculate-a-Lease-Payment Ultimately they have very similar costs of ownership over similar periods just whether you want to spend/save on finance charges vs depreciation.

Juan Danzilo a lease is a loan. Period. There is a startup fee with a lease that some loans don’t have. Also the lease interest rate is expressed as a small decimal. Multiply by 2400 to get equivalent interest rate. Loan interest payments are front loaded. You pay more interest at the start than the end with loans. With leases you pay the same interest every month.
@juandanzilo9324
@juandanzilo9324 5 лет назад
You’re right in that both are ways of borrowing money for a fee (interest). What I am suggesting is that they are not financially the same. Take two scenarios: one in which you lease and one in which you buy. Let’s assume same car, prediction of residual turns out to be accurate, your rate for financing and your interest rate-equivalent for leasing is the same, also assume the lease period is 36 months and financing is 60. For simplicity, also assume no differences in taxes, fees, or money down. If your run both these scenarios in a lease and loan calculator you’ll find you’re paying much more in interest for the lease because your finance charge (interest) is based on cap cost plus residual. Under a loan, you’re right, amortization is different, but if you run a 60 or 72 month scenenario in which you sell after 36 months, at the same residual as the lease, you will have paid much less in interest over the same period, despite the front-loading. Under these assumptions, the total ownership costs over the same period are higher for leasing. The reality is that often residuals under leases are often better (less assumed depreciation) than the true depreciation, while interest (or MF) is higher, but not by as much, making them an attractive option for a lower payment, but I don’t think it’s necessarily cheaper long term. It’s just whether you’re more comfortable with paying a lot more in interest and having the comfort of guaranteed downside protection (I.e., a fixed residual and option to buy) vs. having less finance charges (interest) but potentially being under water with a car you can’t sell well. Obviously there are a lot of factors that could make one scenario more attractive than other (e.g., local tax laws, business vs individual) but my point is that, with a lease, you’re paying interest on the whole thing even though you only “own” the depreciated portion, for a fixed period of time.

If you have a low residual and spend more in your payment upfront, it may benefit you in the end. I bought a Kia stinger gt that was listed at 43k. My buyout is 19. I can’t see my car in 3 years with the low mileage I drive being on the market for less than 19. Plus I know how I drive the car, and not buying someone else’s problems looking for a used car that is similar to mine.
@izzythomas848
@izzythomas848 4 года назад
@@davidmiller8627 I like your insight. With leasing, I don't think one-size-fits-all formula can be applied to every scenaro. As you stated, $19,000 residual at the end of your lease for a Stinger is a great value to me. I think the residual cost is lower because of the brand, but after having it for three years and deciding that you like it, and you know how it was treated and driven, then it may be a wise decision for you to purchase the car, if that's what you want.
@ahmadghosheh3104
@ahmadghosheh3104 5 лет назад
This is the best explanation of buyout vs ending lease. It all depends of specific factors to your car, market, timing and total expenses. One additional tjong, if I lease it would be to try before you buy. I rather experience new models before making a long term, 10 years, commitment.

Another great perspective. I am an avid listener of Dave Ramsey and I think his plan is great, he can be arrogant about it but numbers don’t lie. Life is a lot simpler when you can pay for everything cash and most people aren’t gonna do the research to figure out what they are actually paying. I like what you said about “paying for convenience”. At the end of the day everyone has to decide how much risk they wanna take on and what they are getting into.

Thanks , this REALLY hit home. My beautiful Niece wants to trade in her 16 Chrysler 200 on a E350 Mercedes Benz. She works there in the office so she believes that they wouldn't take advantage of her. She has been fighting me on this because I've told her that I'm not going to help her with the down payment until she seeks out financial advice from a consumer reporter and test drive a vehicle at another car lot. I've asked her to call someone like a Clark Howard or Dave Ramsey and I've also sent her several of your videos. She thinks doing research is asking the finance manager at Mercedes Benz where she works. Trust me when I say your videos are making a difference. The funny thing is that I started a used car search to find something in her price range and found a 08 350 Mercedes Benz with 68k miles on it. I couldn't believe that she refused to even consider it. Now to show her a lesson I'm buying the 08 for myself. BTW I'm a truck guy who is 53 and this will be my very first car. LoL

Thank you, Ari. Another great video. I’ve also experienced buying a luxury car at lease end not making financial sense. Recently turned in my 2015 BMW. Buyout was $29.7k, dealer gave me a trade in price of $21.3k. Yes, that’s 2/3 of what it would have cost me to first buy it out. Obviously, it was not a good move to buy it out

Dont get me wrong I love cars I love them... but I would rather see someone purchase the car they can actually afford and keep it for a while after its bought and paid for instead of leasing! That's just me though!!! I understand the pros and cons but too many people are buying more car than they can afford!! If one has to get a car loan, keep it for under 3yrs max! Even 3yrs is long but I would avoid 4 5 or 6 yrs loans. And leasing, I've always avoided......but I keep my cars long after the purchase and I always buy used!!! But this was one of the ways for us to become debt free...🤗

Thanks for the advice. We will have to really look at our numbers as we will be about 10K (@ .20 per) over on mileage with a cracked rear bumper as well. Given the $3k-$4k fee we would be hit with we really are of the mindset that we were going to be better off purchasing it.

Always depends on the car. Your right. I have a 2018 hellcat. Msrp was 76k, put 3k down and have a 550 monthly payment. The lease loan is 19k. Residual buy back value is 43k at the end of the lease, so a total of 65k out of pocket. That same car 3-4 years old sells for 50-65k depending on condition and mileage. Definitely buying it. Saving basically 20k just leasing it opposed to buying from the get-go.

When Ramsey encourages the buyout of a lease it is in order to mitigate an initial poor decision. The closer someone is to the back end of a lease, Ramsey typically advises to ride it out and turn in.

Hi Ari , thanks a million for the great information that you are sharing with us on RU-vid to educate us about car leasing / buying that we never knew about . I am currently about to return my e coupe Mercedes as the lease is ending in a month. Looking at the ressedule value for my car it’s at 33k . And I noticed it’s getting sold in the market for above 40k . Would it make sense to buy out the lease and make some extra bucks which can be used for my next down payment . One thing I am not 100% sure about if Mercedes is going charge taxes on The 33k and how much are those taxes ?

I've never purchased a car at the end of the lease. I had an Acura RSX that I kept for an extra year since it was still covered under warranty. Since then, I only lease for 3 years and the dealer will give me equity to put toward the new car since my cars always are in nice condition with low miles. They just put it in their lot to be sold. I could sell it on my own but I don't want to have random people test driving it and it's not known how long it will take to sell.

Thanks Ari. I leased my car knowing that I would purchase the car in the end. I got a great lease deal for a '17 Civic Si. Im paying $199 a month. The value of the per month payment and maintaining good value were my priorities. At the end of the lease, I will pay off the buy out price of approximate $14500. Current value as per Cars.com has my car at $18.5K to $21K. This car will be my sons first car. The Si is a niche car and sought after by younger Honda enthusiasts. I wanted to maintain a low per month payment. I could have saved a few thousand by financing but would have paid $150 more a month.

It depends in how you look at it. From a PURE financial perspective oftentimes it may not make sense to lease BUT.... don’t salesmen get trained to establish an EMOTIONAL connection between car and buyer? Most people don’t buy a car just to have 4 wheels to get them from point A to B. On top of a monetary value, people place an emotional value on cars that is important, subjective, and difficult to measure. Why I love leasing? 👉🏼I can afford to pay a nicer car 👉🏼no worries about mechanical breakdowns 👉🏼covered by GAP and Bumper to Bumper warranty 👉🏼sometimes maintenance is included 👉🏼have a lot more to chose from every 3 years. Good vid Boss!

@@johniii8147 Same for me John. Love the convenience of not having to look for a mechanic due to car age. With lease is 3-4 oil changes and that's about it. Whenever I lease I have at least 2 options of the same car type, and about same price range. Then I focus on the one I like the most, and if I don't get the deal I think I can get, then I move to my next option. :-)

Some You Tube experts are for Leases. But the reason is you get the part of the pie you wanted and can throw away the rest after three years to someone else. Many people do not understand leases, which is why there are car dealerships who do not push them! The only thing I would be worried about with a lease is getting one before auto companies decide they are not worth giving out. BUT, I'm going to do a lot more research!

Here’s my problem. Our Acura RDX lease ends in Oct. We like the car and would roll our lease over to a new RDX except that they no longer make a 6 cylinder in the RDX; they make a 4 cyl turbo which I don’t think has as much pickup. So we’ve been considering buying the car. Thoughts?

Can you do a video about leasing a car just to take advantage of the lease cash offer where the end-goal is to buy the car outright as soon as you are able to get a payoff amount (meaning, we're not waiting until the end of the lease)? The 2019 Kia Stinger GT, for example, offers $7000 lease cash on AWD models, and $6300 for RWD models (on a 24-month lease).

Great video. I find Ramsey is right on most things most of the time, but he has to generalize to appeal to a wide audience, leaving off important exceptions and nuances to his rules. Wanted to hear your thoughts (and anyone else’s) on two things: 1. With leases you are paying interest (MF) on not just the depreciated value but the cap cost + residual, so if you finance at the end, doesn’t that mean you’ve paid interests twice? So it’s not exactly like a loan with a call option at the end; not only is the rate higher, but the base on which you’re paying interest is also proportionately higher than a loan. 2. Do you expect there will be more risk (variance in price) now that cars seem to be evolving more quickly (I.e., autonomous, electrification), and as a result shouldn’t there be a value placed in the optionality (downside protection) leasing provides?

Hello there! I have 5 payments left of a 36 month lease of my 2019 Toyota Avalon XSE model with 24,900 miles and my buyout end lease option is $22,763. I checked on Gurus and the model is going for $33,000. I love my vehicle because its so reliable. I have only taken the car for service schedule maintenance, it has never failed me for the last 2.5 years so I want to keep it. I think its worth it to buy. What other fees beside that buyout price do I look out for? thank you in advance for your reply.

The lease on my 2018 F150 is up next month. From my research, my truck is worth about five grand more than my lease buyout price. And my lease buyout price is about 8 to 10 grand less than what I’m seeing other 2018’s going for right now. So purchasing it would be a good option in this case, correct?

I don't like my current leased car. I want to sell my current leased car, then use whatever the profit I make after paying it off to the current dealer as a down payment for a cheaper lease car at another dealer. Any tips how to do it? thanks

It’s been three years for this video. Does it still hold true in today’s market? I leased a Ford Fusion plug in hybrid, 9 payments left, and the buyout is about 16 g’s. Any suggestions or advice?

Funny...been thinking about contacting you. I have a leased A4 with 23 payments left. Soon to be 22 payments. I also have a 2015 F150 with 6-7k of equity in it. Would love to trade both in...for one vehicle. Can this ever make sense?

I have two questions: is it advisable to buy a Certified pre-owned 2020 F pace 30t AWD if it was previously used as a rental car (approximately 18,500 miles). It comes with a warranty of 6 year/100,000 miles. Secondly, Does 0% financing really mean no interest? For example, let’s say you’ve negotiated a $40,000 out the door price, and financing it for 60 months at 0%, would your monthly payments be $666.67? In other words 40,000÷60, correct? Thank you for any help you can provide.

It is completely situational. Why would it be more expensive to lease if you have an extremely low apr and able to pay for it cash at the end of the lease? Talking about an in demand vehicle with slow depreciation and a buyout less than market value. These cars are out there, like Ari said, there are more non luxury types.

Honestly, money just isn’t everything. My leased truck was extremely well maintained and cared for. I’d rather buy my own truck instead of buying a cheaper ‘certified’ truck elsewhere. ‘Certified’ is a piece of paper which is meaningless to me.

You don't know what kind of person owned one of those 'certified' ones. They could have been an animal and abuse the crap out of the drive train, since they knew they were turning it in. Also, certified vehicles don't really mean that much, because many of the shops just go through the motions of inspecting the vehicle. Audis break down quite a lot after about 5 years, and drop in price like a rock, so buying a pre-leased Audi is not really a wise decision.

My 2019 RDX A Spec lease is ending. 19K miles in perfect condition, buyout is $28,116. Is this looking like a good buyout then sell condition? I won't be leasing a new car.

I’m approaching that time to make this decision. Price wise your advice is spot on, but what about if you have a sport/ high performance car that you leased new and took great care of it, are you going to return it and buy a CPO that could have been neglected and or abused like most leased cars?

I returned my Leased BMW SUV and brought an used Mercedes sedan thinking it was a great deal. However, the previous owner neglected maintenance on the car and it was basically a lemon. Many people who don’t care about maintenance since they are returning it in three years. Should’ve done a buyout of my leased BMW SUV since I know the history and I took good care of it. Be very careful about buying an used car. Lesson learned.

I'm in that same particular case for my wifes Lexus GX... our buy out is $29k and used GXs are selling mid $30k to $40k... Was thinking of buying and reselling but may not be worth the effort to do that.
@edwardp9365

Easy way to do that is go to carmax and have it appraised...in my experience they're pretty close to market value. If they offer you more than the buyout then you can let them handle the paperwork and walk away with the difference.

It always makes sense to get a "Certified Preowned" ... EXCEPT for cars like BMW, where we can CUSTOMIZE the interior and exterior to our liking. I may want the mocha/black interior, or the glass shift knob, or the some other feature that a "basic build" is simply not appealing to me. So, in terms of cutomizing it to MY liking, certified preowns just don't cut it.

Would it be better to go with a CPO vs a solid used car and purchasing a dealership backed extended warranty? General question. Both vehicles have same specs and within 15k of each other and in same like new condition. Aaaannndddd GO!!! 😆

If residual value is below for a few thousands then buy the lease car directly from the manufacturer cash is best. Why? because you will pay less than the real value of the car and second you save on interest and save by voiding dealer fee ($999)

Never mentioned was if you go over on the milage .it happened to me,so I bought the car.it worked at well.kept it two more years traded it in .ended buying my next car because I received good trade in value. Also mentioned was certified. From I what read and heard certified was a lot of nonsense .it means absolutely nothing .

You don’t ever want to lease a Toyota or Honda. They hold their values very well. Now BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, or exotic cars - leasing makes more sense as they drop their values 20-30% as soon as you drive it off the lot. Haha.

Dave Ramsey is the reason hundreds of thousands have gotten out of debt and are living well. Guys like you are the reason people remain in debt. Nothing against you as a person, but you're dead wrong. Drive what you can afford, not what you want to look like.

So if I put about $7,000 down on a $30000 new truck and lease it at around $300 for 36 months, does the math work like this? $30k - $7k = $23k $300x 36 ~ 10k. Do I subtract $23k - $10k which would mean I have a residue balance of $13k ??? Or does the dealer make the buy out price from the beginning. Thanks a lot
@Immolate62
@Immolate62 3 года назад
The dealer (or the lease company?) establishes the buy-out price at the start. For example, I leased my 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro in March 2018 with a buy-out price of $30K. I'd be an idiot not to buy it out, but I knew that before watching this video.

Take in consideration that you know your lease car, and that has a value. A different used car is a higher risk.

Dave uses generalized statements but they are backed with facts and evidence through research and studies. He uses averages, of course there are outliers. Following him for a while and fact checking what he says, it does check out. That’s how statements become “true”. He speaks generally on the finance aspect. Financing and leasing cars will flat out cost you more money in the long run. It’s just a fact. Living life on “how much of a payment I can afford” will leave people broke for ever.
