LaVell Edwards and team captains Ty Detmer, Matt Bellini and Alema Fitisemanu remember the BYU Cougars historic upset of No. 1 and defending national champion Miami.
I did offensive stats for ESPN that game. The pressure of keeping up with TY's and the team's passing and running numbers, and getting it recorded correctly for a national audience, was overwhelming. I was so focused that didn't realize how much of the game I didn't enjoy until I saw the highlights a couple of decades latter. Wow, what a game!
I remember watching this game. I’m a Miami fan and thought BYU didn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell of beating us. Unfortunately, Ty Detmer was unstoppable that night. It was a well earned win by BYU.
I walked to the stadium that evening with a friend. We didn’t have tickets. Held two fingers in the air and soon we were in the stadium. Sat in the East bleachers, south end zone, about 4 rows up. I think every BYU touchdown was right in front of me. What an amazing game!
I was at this game. I’ve been to more BYU games than I can count. This was by far the greatest football experience of my life. I arrived a couple hours early went down to the campus bookstore. There was a large group of Miami alumni there, mostly made up of past Miami football players. They were holding up BYU gear and mocking it. One very large Dude ask me if I was a BYU fan. I told him I was. He asked if I thought BYU could beat Miami. I told him yes. They all but laughed me out of there. Ty was a stud, don’t know if you noticed in this video but his chin was bandaged. He took a hell of a hit. Had to get stitches. He wasn’t going to give up. So here I am decades later, basically an old man. I am sitting in my office waiting for the day to be over, in no where Utah. There is a knock at my door it swings open and there is standing Ty Detmer. He’s such a grounded man. Another great BYU experience for me. Thanks Ty.
I was living in the Salt Lake Valley at the time, and my in-laws were in town to visit from Florida. I was raised in Jacksonville, but went to BYU in the mid 70s. And I was a huge Cougar fan. I looked at Dad and said, “Let’s drive down and see if we get seats.” We were at the southwest gate and got two $17.50 for $100. Best money we ever spent. We were in the east bleachers half way up on the north 30 yard line. Best money we ever spent.
The Primary reason why Miami lost that game: They had a hard time getting used to the High Elevation [at first]. By the time they were starting to get used to it... it was a little too late for the comeback win. If that game were played anyplace else [that didn't have High elevation... of course], this little 'Special' lookback video, wouldn't exist... neither would Ty Detmer and the instant national fame he obtained as a result of the outcome of this game. Everyone loved him simply because, he beat Miami [in whom everyone hated, at that time].
Pardon me but you're full of it. Miami was down by only 7 with an entire fourth quarter to try to come back. They were outplayed by a team that was the better team on that day.
