Thank you for being so generous with your time and wisdom. I hope you never get burnt out & keep making these Corvette videos. The world would be a worse place without your valuable input.
I have a 2007 C6 automatic, and cooked myself just standing on it accelerating on an Interstate on-ramp. I did NOT have to hit the "magic button" for the privilege. As I blew by the State Police at about 160, well . . . The Statie did me a solid and wrote the ticket so that I wouldn't catch a felony reckless driving case. Jus' sayin' . . .
Lyle with another surprise! C&S Corvette in Sarasota keeps proving there are Corvette enthusiasts shops as good. As a C&S customer I know there are no better shops in the world than C&S Corvette. + C&S Corvettes continuous information the C&S Corvettes crew shares with Corvette owners is the best! Thanks Lyle!
(I realize this is a older video but had to make a comment) This makes me smile and remember my first car, a 1967 firebird, 400, 4 speed Muncie, 411 posi. No magic button but lots of really big smiles and 1/4 mile runs full throttle. I currently own a 1993 C4, and a 1995 Z28 lots of fun and now I'm looking for a C5 or C6 to add to the stable. Your videos have been a great help in trying to decide exactly what I want. Thanks for the info. (I'm 59 and a lot closer to 60 and my second childhood is kicking in now)
Lyle, I cannot Thank You enough for the Advice on the C-6 Convertible. I had no idea about the Handle and flipping it back in to it lock-closed position. This is my Second C-6 2007 & 2013 and I have obviously been extremely lucky.
I just bought an 07 LS2 corvette and Im going try this weekend. Hopefully comeback with a smile on my face. Thank you for that tip! I watch your videos all the time! Awesome information! Keep it up boss!
I have a C6 GS manual and I really enjoyed this upload. I also subscribed. So it's the "Magical Button." LOL I prefer calling it the "Mr. Hyde Button," lol in that it brings out a whole new beast. :-) Then again, the description of it being the "Stupid Button" seems to work just as well. lol Save the Wave.
C5 owner here 24 yrs. I fasten my seat belt and hit the button every time I drive my 99 coupe. Do not want to be on the gas and power is shut down. It is Procharged, forged and 6.5 liters.
On my 2008: one click turns off traction control. Two clicks turns on Competition Driving Mode Hold for 5-6 seconds turns off Active Handling and Traction control
Just a request, you should do a segment regarding the shifter in automatic c6 & c5. Mine would not come out of park intermittently due to a micro switch. I took to my speed shop & they cut off the entire safety lock. Only difference is, you can put it drive without having your foot on the brake. No big deal. The dealership would've charged $1000's to fix. FYI, it's a known problem that GM should've recalled.
When you hold the button for 5 seconds, and C5 goes to Competition Mode. What picture do you see? Lighted Traction control car & skid marks off or no lighted picture. Thanks.
I have a c5 automatic since a couple of months now. today a nice sunny day. I tested this in competetion mode.. (ASR SPORT MODE) and it was a sensation!!! but wen i pull of the first 3-4 seconds only tyre spin. when i looked in the mirror i see smoke and 2 long black stripes on the road! i think the car had been faster to 100kmh with the traction control on. Or is it because i have no experience with corvette? maybe a couple of pulls more to make the tyres warmer? normally i always just cruise in the car. or on back roads shift the auto in 2 gear. and pull. Great car!
Competitive Driving Mode is more for getting the rear loose in turns and to allow steering with the throttle. For straight-line acceleration, traction control still (technically) slows you down...but if you are just mashing the pedal to the floor you will have tire spin instead of speed. Practice rolling into the throttle to get a feel for what your adhesion/traction limits are on your tires. If you still have run-flats, get yourself a set of stickier non-runflat tires and have WAY more fun. Lyle
@@cscorvetteify Thanks Lyle for your fast comment!! i love your professionel video's! i have a few mercedes sports cars from the 90"s . But corvette is for me the best in comfort and performance. This summer i want to take the car to holiday in Spain. Run flat tyres i had in mind, because the long distance. but thats something i have to think about.. Thanks again, greetz from Holland , Bjorn
Hi Lyle, great video, as always. I just bought a 2003 (automatic, Memory Package) and am interested in getting a push button start kit. I will definitely try turning off traction control, but I couldn't find a video of yours that directly addresses the issue of keyless ignition. It would be "the other magical button." Are there reputable companies that do this for C5's? Any drawbacks to installing a push button start?
Another note. The beautiful thing about the old gm key ignition is, it's very simple to put it in accessory. Just turn the key back & jam the stereo. With push button, ya have to hold it down when the car isn't running. This can become important if you have shifter problems, which the c5 & c6 are known for.
Believe me ...many vette owners just buy that car cause is a beautiful car but they know a shit about corvettes... I have seen a dumb paying for replacing the wiper blades in a corvette... Etc
Hi Lyle, is there a possybility to adjust the Intrusion Detektor in the corvette c6 convertible? I know that I can shut it off in the glove compartment. if a leaf falls in the open car, the horn starts. Franz from Germany
Cool car, BUT, I'm not a fan of convertibles, especially corvettes, since the top comes off. Convertibles have the maintenance of the top, hydraulics, they're heavier & the entire car is less rigid.
What is better for racing? I have a 2008 C6 LS3 , is Compititive mode faster or is holding the magic button for 5-6 secounds and having everything (traction/handeling) off better?
That largely depends on your skill level as a driver. Competitive mode keeps some of the babysitters on at the very limits to keep you from an expensive "oopsie". If you are a trained and experienced track guy, you might get a slightly better result by turning it all off, but you need to have an honest conversation with yourself about that. :) Lyle
I need some guidance or help. If I push and hold the button the most I’ve ever does is trash control off/trac control on. 1998 corvette convertible. Has that suspension select button.. previous Owner put Bilsteen shocks in. He left something connected from the old shocks. Never any messages about the shocks. Any insight into this issue please
Active Handling is a requirement for the Competitive Driving Mode, and it wasn't standard until 2001. My guess is that even with the adjustable suspension, you didn't have that option? Just a guess? Lyle
I have a 2009 Z06 and a few days ago I washed it and when I was finished I started it up to drive it and service antilock brakes, service active handling system, and service traction system message came on, the traction control button doesn't work now at all, what could be wrong?
GM had a recall for '05 & '06 Vettes with this issue. Did this on my '06. Easy solution & free. The electrical connector for the steering position sensor had a issue with one wire regularly coming loose after normal repeated repositioning of the steering wheel. You can google this, and basically you have to remove the lower dash cover above the driver's foot area, get on your back under the dash, find the connector strapped to the steering column, then reseat the harness and individual wires (only 2 or 3 as i can recall), then restrap harness and wires in a slightly different position that doesn't allow too much tension on the wire connections.
It may also be your wiper control module that is integrated into the wiper motor itself. Both parts are readily available, but I recommend having a professional diagnose the issue so that you are only replacing the part that is problematic. Lyle
@@cscorvetteify thanks for the advice. Only had the car since January. Love it , even with the $1400 bill for balancer and trans service. Only had 30k when I bought it
Depending on how much power you are making, the system can help keep you from breaking traction at high speeds (which is a no-no). Turning it off can provide a marginal improvement in acceleration from a rolling start, but you need to weigh that advantage against the risk of ending up in the woods when the car gets out of shape. :) Lyle
@@cscorvetteify on my car if i press ones it says “traction off” if i push it again it says traction on but car handling off” if i hold it for 5-7 sec it turns everything off handeling and traction. Wich is the best when racing from a rolling point? Everything off correct?
Most of the people in my area buying these cars are old enough that when they WERE driving fast, the cars didn't have electronics...like, at all. Now they want to romp on it at a light and are disappointed when it falls on it's face because there's no feedback through the pedal like there used to be when traction control was active. Lyle
@@therabbitswhisper You absolutely will...especially above 4500 rpm and/or in corners. Car becomes much more lively and you can steer with the throttle. Lyle
Are you saying it will become "scary" to drive? I find it to be a bit scary as is, lol. I drove 4cyl cars for 30 years, when i turned 50 I bought my 02' C5. I'm still learning, I respect it, keeping it on all 4 wheels. Tends to break loose taking off. Fun but scary at the same time. I don't want to break it or me, lol. Car is cherry, only 13,000 on it.
@@therabbitswhisper Scary if you are driving above your skill level--think of the safety nets like training wheels...you can probe your limits while the car keeps you more or less safe. That is what Competitive Driving mode is for. Only when you turn everything off are you completely relying on your own skill. Lyle
I'm glad I didn't know about this feature until 2 years ago, have a 04 convertible and have driven it hard since 04. Lyle is totally right, way more fun, the car can get away from you without all the safety features.
I have a question I am looking at a nice 99, but would like to test the ecbm controlled items. Is there a way to make sure things are all in working order, They changed the battery because battery was always dead and they kept booster pack starting it. Thanks
@@cscorvetteify No, I am looking to buy one, I did a test drive and I am not sure how to test these things out. The battery being dead and car being booster started kinda scared me that maybe doing that was keeping codes cleared. After they put a new battery in the car so i wouldn't get stranded if I stalled it I got a wait 10 seconds remove key. Thanks for any help on this
@@jimshorts7983 You will need an LMC5 Steering column lock bypass unit--that will solve the pull key / 10 sec issue forever. They cost about $70 and take about 30 mintues to install. Lyle
@@cscorvetteify The car has one on it, I am assuming it prob needs the brown wire added to the install im not sure how old the LMC5 kit on this one is, but I wasn't sure if the wait 10 seconds was maybe a key problem. I dont own the car I want to buy it but trying to cross my T's. I also know he has not had any luck programming key fobs. I got one to program but then it did nothing but without owning I cant take stuff apart.
@@jimshorts7983 The brown wire alternate install should solve that problem. As far as the fob programming, lots of people are buying "correct" fobs online for cheap prices but the FCC codes are different than the ones needed for Corvette. That may be the only issue. If they are actual GM fobs, then there may be other problems. Lyle
my traction control has been out on my C5 for at least 6 mouths to the point it always says its off/disabled and honestly id prefer it to stay off, so far (knock on wood) iv only spun out once and that was in extremely heavy rain on my way to work. my C5 is a daily driver, i do need a new radiator support now tho :/ the bottom of them are bent.
@@banditdarval9401 why? who says i cant? it goes just fine if it has GOOD tires like it does now, when i spun it it barely had tread. its not the only car i own its just the only one i drive :)
Just saying man, I've been caught in the rain myself in mine, what you don't realize is all that dirty road water gets thrown up into the engine compartment, then, every time ya go to cruise in, ya spend an hour cleaning off your motor.
No one wants to rebuild a Ebcm for a 99' c5...the DIC says to service Active Handling System... 01 to 04 can be resoldered, in most cases after taken apart. Any advice would be most appreciated...thx
Max, I wish I had an answer...if I did, I would be a wealthy man. I am not aware of anyone who can consistently rebuild those units as disassembling them is virtually impossible without destroying them. Lyle
@@cscorvetteify thx,..it really is the wrong year for a rebuild. Y.T. has provided a few d.i.y. rebuilds for 2001 to 2004, for under $100. More research has found a You tuber replacing his unit with the 01 to 04 unit and its Way more complicated than just replacing the Different unit. Wiring differences. If the button doesn't work any more, pull A couple of fuses per s Y.T. video. Chuck Cow, of Corvettes of Westchester, NY...can rebuild it or fix the grounding issue...I found this info in a forum. I'm in Az. and he is in NY... He wants the whole car to diagnose the real problem. I don't want to buy a used one for $1,000, with the promise it works... o'well. Chuck, aCorvette mechanic, in Ohio at Coughlin Chevy dealership read and answered my question... on salesman Rick Conti's YT channel... he said disconnect it. If I find an answer, I'll post it on YT too...lol...thx
Yo, I did that best thing possible to cure this possible. And it eliminated the Snap Spinouts too.. ..it is the ultimate cure.... I traded in my 3 Vettes, 99 c5 vert, 04 z06, & a 14 c7 3Lt vert....for a 22 Hypersonic Gray c8 Sting Ray coupe with Trident wheels...& Red seats. Oh what a Feeling. ps, there is a YT vid of someone changing over the unrebuildable ebcm, to the newer rebuildable one... That dude is the Man.
I followed this tip and my car flipped over in a ditch it couldn't be avoided there was nothing I could do, everything was fine before I followed this advice
These cars will bite you on the ass quick, when you turn that button off. Too much gas too soon coming out of a corner, and the back end might pass the front end.
Yep...this is why I cautioned people to do it somewhere away from traffic and to be smart about it. At least it won't break loose and destroy everything around it like a Mustang!! :) Lyle
This video really highlights why the Vette has the stereotyping it does of being driven by midlife crisis idiots that aren't car guys. Going to be hard to own this car after owning Vipers.
I've owned both as well. In my experience my RT/10 hands down was much more exciting/difficult/driver reliant to control than the C5...both in stock form. The C5 is much more controllable and easier to keep straight, but it takes power adders to make the C5 fun enough. For me anyway. I forged and put an ECS Novi 1500 on one of my C5s and now (634 wheel horse power/ 568 wheel torque) it's hands down waaay more enjoyable/exciting to toy around with than any car I've ever owned.
